When a play is so widely familiar and beloved as Hamlet, its beloved famil-iarity can become a burden to those who hold it dear as well as those who feel left outside its hallowed walls. Familiarity obstructs our individu-al and collective views of what else beyond our preconceptions might come of the play. The endless flood of diverse possibilities pouring out of Hamlet might be far more interesting, surprising, and entertaining than any single vision.

Our aim with this production is to create – each night! – not the Hamlet, but a Hamlet, that isn’t about how clever the star playing Hamlet will be with the famous lines and tropes. Rather, we hope to share a Hamlet that embraces every one of us gathered in this theater tonight, in all our contra-dictory, various, and evolving states of mind and body. Hamlet is someone’s child, friend, and lover. A poet, actor, politician, philosopher, athlete, and student. Suicidal and life affirming. Prone to shortsighted decisions and uncommonly insightful observations. Why not let all these Hamlets share the stage? They’re all in the house, after all!

During our October 2015 workshop for this production, actor Kevin Clarke nutshelled something about the cast’s task that also captured the under-lying spirit of the production. “We’re not here to play any one role,” he said. “We’re here to do the play.” Thank you for coming tonight to experi-ence this play. Please come two, three, or seven times. It will be different each time. Hamlet has been a fascinating mess for 400 years. Hopefully we haven’t cleaned it up for you!

Kitty BosherEven though I have spent my entire life-of-memory on the east coast, for the past 25 years I think nothing of getting on a plane and flying 3000 miles to see a good play. Much better at setting the stage than actually being on the stage, I am a self-described “appreciator of the arts”. (I mean, someone needs to applaud, right?) This 25th Sea-son in Repertory will be the very first time I will be able to see every. single. play. of the entire season and I am giddy at the prospect. Break It Down!

Daralyn Durie & Ragesh TangriDaralyn, Ragesh, and their daughter Iona have been privileged to experience some amazing theatre here: Beowulf … Vera Wilde … In the Wound ... Of the Earth … Woyzeck … The Norman Conquests … Strangers, Babies … God’s Plot … Antigonick … Eurydice … and (of course) The Coast of Utopia. We are pleased to offer our thanks to The Shotgun Players for allowing us to share such a wonderful slice of their first 25 years by helping present the 25th Anniversary Season, and we look forward with excitement, anticipation, and joy to the next 25.

Pat and Merrill Shanks

We’re delighted to be Shotgun sponsors for the 25th Anniversary Season. What a way to celebrate -- an entire season in repertory, beginning with Hamlet Roulette! Shotgun is outdoing itself with this audacious approach to traditional material. Wonder who we’ll get to see playing Hamlet? Ophelia? Laertes? Claudius?

Alex, Electra, & Lucy White

Alex, Electra and Lucy White grew up driving past the Ashby Stage on their way to school, with peaked interest and intrigue in the ever-changing murals. Today, as an aspiring filmmaker, prolific illustrator and a twelve-year-old maverick, they continue to search for inspiration and meaning in the arts and are thrilled to be supporting Shotgun’s valiant production of Hamlet.
