The popcorn pops, the lights go down, and for a few hours we’re transported into someone else’s storyline — and when the credits roll, it’s all because of YOU!

The 2016 fiscal year found The Picture House Regional Film Center continuing to prosper and thrive. Picture House programming was stronger than ever, membership levels continued to increase, and TPH education programs expanded and diversified to reach an historic number of students throughout the region.

And you did it! Every member, every donor, every ticket buyer played a part in this endeavor. In 2016, you filled the 308-seat Main Hall night after night for three seasons of sold-out Film Club, you helped us celebrate (and raise funds) at the Spring Soirée and 5th Annual Picnic in the Park, and you fostered the development of a new education program — Voice & Vision — for underfunded schools.

In these pages, you’ll see many more examples of the impact you’ve made in ensuring that The Picture House remains the vibrant and unique cultural resource it is today. As a nonprofit, we rely on your ongoing support and we’re extremely grateful for it! We look forward to continuing to provide you with dynamic programming in a community setting where film-lovers of all ages can connect and enjoy the magic of the movies together.

Programming

“IN 2016, TPH BUILT on our strength and success as we played 99% of the Oscar-nominated movies across all categories, offered Film Club to sold-out crowds, hosted interesting festivals like the Westchester International Children’s Film Festival, all while introducing brand-new series like “Science on Screen” and “Music and Movies.”

ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT in the Main Hall, filmgoers caught an advance screening of a soon-to-be acclaimed movie accompanied by a conversation with a film-maker, actor, or industry insider; rekindled their love for an old film; or found something perfect to see with the whole family. In the Screening Room, we continued to showcase the best indie, international, and documentary films - films that often no other theaters in our area played. I think TPH continues to stand among the greatest theaters in the country for showcasing the best of independent, award-winning, and groundbreaking film.”

Education

VOICE&VISION A PICTURE HOUSE EDUCATION PROGRAM

“WHAT AN AMAZING YEAR we had with education at The Picture House! We continued in-house programs such as Evening Film Club and our highly popular weeklong camps, and also introduced high school and middle school Improv classes. We extended our reach in southern Westchester, serving schools and community groups in Pelham, Bronxville, New Rochelle, Yonkers, and Mt. Vernon. 2016 also saw the launch of our Voice & Vision program designed to help students in underserved school districts discover their voices through the lens of a camera. And our students learned to give back through film. Eight of our summer High School Documentary Intensive students made a documentary for County Har-vest. It’s so professional that the nonprofit now uses it for promotional purposes. And for 2016’s Future Filmmakers Film Festival, we received over 40 film submissions from a dozen schools across southern Westchester, making it increasingly difficult for our committee to select the winners.”

“WE WERE DELIGHTED THAT in 2016 our wonderful donors and supporters celebrated with us at the 5th annual Picnic in the Park and our Spring Soirée. At Picnic — another sold-out success — we welcomed director Sophie Goodhart and enjoyed her film My Blind Brother before head-ing to the park across the street for a festive dinner and dancing — all the while raising funds for TPH. At the Spring Soirée we were thrilled to honor local hero Eric Salmeron, Academy Award-winning director Paul Haggis, and the legendary Cicely Tyson, as our guests generous-ly donated funds to support TPH’s education residencies in area schools.
