WELCOME MESSAGE FROM GENERAL CHAIRS

The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was started to

provide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in

artificial intelligence, machine learning, pattern recognition, bioinformatics,

and computational biology. It aims to bring together researchers and

practitioners from both academia and industry to share ideas, problems, and

solutions related to the multifaceted aspects of intelligent computing.

ICIC 2019, held in Nanchang, China, August 3-6, 2019, constituted the 15th

International Conference on Intelligent Computing. It built upon the success of

ICIC2018, ICIC2017, ICIC 2016, ICIC 2015, ICIC 2014, ICIC 2013, ICIC

2012, ICIC 2011, ICIC 2010, ICIC 2009, ICIC 2008, ICIC 2007, ICIC 2006,

and ICIC 2005 that were held in Wuhan/China, Liverpool/UK, Lanzhou,

Fuzhou, Taiyuan, Nanning, Huangshan, Zhengzhou, Changsha, China, Ulsan/

Korea, Shanghai, Qingdao, Kunming, and Hefei, China, respectively.

This year, the conference concentrated mainly on the theories and

methodologies as well as the emerging applications of intelligent computing.

Its aim was to unify the picture of contemporary intelligent computing

techniques as an integral concept that highlights the trends in advanced

computational intelligence and bridges theoretical research with applications.

Therefore, the theme for this conference was “Advanced Intelligent Computing

Technology and Applications”. Papers focused on this theme were solicited,

addressing theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.

ICIC 2019 received 609 submissions from 22 countries and regions. All papers

went through a rigorous peer-review procedure and each paper received at least

three review reports. Based on the review reports, the Program Committee

finally selected 217 high-quality papers for presentation at ICIC 2019, included

in three volumes of proceedings published by Springer: two volumes of Lecture

Notes in Computer Science (LNCS), i.e., LNCSs 11643 & 11644, and one

volume of Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI), i.e., LNAI 11645.

5

In addition, this year we also received Poster paper submission. This time

we selected 16 Poster papers from over 20 submissions, which will be exhibited

on the provided display board.

The organizers of ICIC 2019, including Tongji University, Nanchang

Institute of Technology, East China University of Technology and Guangxi

Teachers Education University made an enormous effort to ensure the success

of the conference. We hereby would like to thank the members of the Program

Committee and the referees for their collective effort in reviewing and soliciting

the papers. We would like to thank Alfred Hofmann, executive editor at

Springer Nature, for his frank and helpful advice and guidance throughout and

for his continuous support in publishing the proceedings. In particular, we

would like to thank all the authors for contributing their papers. Without the

high-quality submissions from the authors, the success of the conference would

not have been possible. Further, we are especially grateful to the International

Neural Network Society, and the National Science Foundation of China for

their sponsorship. Finally, we also sincerely thank our international partners,

Liverpool John Moores University, UK and Kazan Federal University, RUS for

their technical supports.

Introduction of Keynote Speakers

◼ Keynote Speaker 1: Sheng Chen

Growing and Pruning Selective Ensemble Regression over Drifting

Data Streams

PhD & Professor, Fellow of UK Royal Academy of Engineering, IEEE Fellow

School of Electronics and Computer Science

University of Southampton

Southampton SO5 1BJ, UK

Email: [email protected]

Personal website: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/~sqc/

Abstract: From my made-up “famous” equation , where stands for our

electronic and digital infrastructure and equals to Computing and

Communication, I'll start a light-hearted history of how AI is saved at least

partly by ̀ Intelligent Computing' - the theme of this conference and of course

my talk. More specifically, my talk is about how to adaptively construct

online selective ensemble regression model for fast-arriving highly nonlinear

and nonstationary data streams. Any ensemble learner faces a so-called

stability-plasticity dilemma. Stability implies that a learner retains acquired

knowledge for maintaining diverse pool of past knowledge, but plasticity

requires a learner to forget part or all previous knowledge so that it can

quickly capture new knowledge from newly upcoming data. We propose a growing and pruning

selective ensemble regression for adaptive modeling of nonlinear and nonstationary systems. Central

to this effective and accurate selective ensemble learner is its growing strategy and pruning strategy.

During online operation, the proposed growing strategy automatically identifies newly emerging

process state and fits a local linear model to capture this newly occurring knowledge. Therefore, our

learning strategy is capable of maintaining the maximum diversity of the base model set. Furthermore,

our proposed pruning strategy is capable of reliably removing “unwanted” local models online and,

therefore, significantly reduces computational complexity of constructing online selective ensemble

regression model, without sacrificing the diversity and accuracy of selective ensemble regression.

Abstract: I will motivate this talk by first introducing a new challenge to

reinforcement learning (RL) based control design. The problem focuses on

learning control of powered lower limb prosthesis in order for the human-

machine system (HMS) to help an amputee regain the lost limb function.

The nature of the problem calls for a RL controller not only to address the

differences in human physiology, but also the differences in ways that

individuals walk in a foreign object such as a computer controlled

prosthesis. As such, the HMS control problem poses great opportunities for

the field of reinforcement learning or even broader engineering disciplines.

In this talk, I will speak about our exciting new results on several RL designs that have been tested on

human subjects for level ground walking. With our initial feasibility studies to demonstrate our RL

controls can be data and time efficient during learning, I will also discuss directions we will take for

RL controller to help achieve the ultimate goal of human-machine symbiosis.

Abstract: Protein structure prediction aims to determine the spatial

location of every atom in protein molecules from the amino acid sequence

by computational simulations. In this talk, we first review recent progress

in computer-based protein structure prediction and show that the problem

can be solved in principle by template-based modeling in case that

threading could recognize the best structural templates from the Protein

Data Bank. Next, we discuss the results of protein structure prediction in

the most recent community-wide blind CASP experiments, and show that

new approaches combining ab initio folding and deep neural-network

contact prediction can break through the barrier of physics-based protein

folding, which resulted in successful folding of proteins with sequence longer than 300 amino acids.

Finally, we summarize the major challenges of the field in ab initio folding, structure refinement, and

the modeling of membrane proteins.

Bioinformatics and Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan. The research

of the Zhang Lab focuses on protein folding and protein structure prediction, and protein design and

engineering. The I-TASSER developed in his lab was ranked as the No 1 most accurate method for

automated protein structure prediction in the last seven worldwide CASP competitions (2006-2018).

Introduction of Invited Speakers

Speaker 1: Abir Hussain

Machine Learning Approaches for the Foresting Financial Time Series

Ph.D & Professor

Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Liverpool John Moores University, UK

Email: [email protected]

Personal website: www.ljmu.ac.uk/about-us/staff-profiles/faculty-of-engineering-and-

technology/department-of-computer-science/abir-hussain

Abstract: The problem of predicting financial time-series data is an issue

of a much interest to both economic and academic communities.

Decisions regarding investments and trading by large companies and the

economic policy of governments rely on computer modelling forecasts.

The foreign currency exchange rates are very important in this respect,

with FX market worth an estimated daily trading volume of 1 trillion US

Dollars.

Most financial data is non-stationary by default, this means that the

statistical properties of the data change over time. These changes are

caused as a result of various business and economic cycles (e.g. demand

for air travel is higher in the summer months, this can have a knock-on

effect of exchange rates, fuel prices, etc). While this information should be taken into account in the

current closing price of a stock, share or exchange rate it still means that long term study of the

behaviour of a given variable is not always the best indicator of its future behaviour. Traditional

methods for time series forecasting are statistics-based, including moving average, autoregressive,

autoregressive moving average models, linear regression and exponential smoothing. These

approaches do not produce fully satisfactory results, due to the nonlinear behaviour of most of the

natural occurring time series. Other more advanced techniques such as neural networks, fuzzy logic

and fractals have been successfully used in time series prediction. This talk addresses the problem of

financial time series prediction using advanced machine learning approaches.

Bio-Sketch: Abir Hussain is a professor of Machine Learning and a member of the Applied

Computing Research Group at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Liverpool John Moores

University, UK.

title Polynomial Neural Networks for Image and Signal Processing. She has published numerous

referred research papers in conferences and Journal in the research areas of Neural Networks, Signal

Prediction, Telecommunication Fraud Detection and Image Compression.

She has worked with higher order and recurrent neural networks and their applications to financial,

physical, e-health and image compression techniques. She has developed with her research students a

number of recurrent neural network architectures. Her research has been published in a number of

high esteemed and high impact journals such as Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society,

Abstract: From the statistics of Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man

(OMIM), there are more a numbers of diseases than that of disease genes that

are experimentally verified. The computational methods could play an

important role in identifying more disease genes towards the understanding

of complex diseases. In this presentation, I will talk about some of our recent

results for predicting disease genes based on artificial intelligence models.

First, with the concepts of network energy (similar to that for Boltzmann

machine), I will present several machine learning models that we developed

for predicting disease genes from biomolecular networks. I will also

introduce two deep learning models: deep belief network and generalized

neighborhood based convolutional neural networks, which we developed for predicting disease/driver

genes from multiple sources of data.
