The 201Q2 istrict - 1 - District Governor Gordon Bailey The 201Q2 District Governor’s Bulletin Issue 6 – December 2014 Greetings to all in our great District of 201Q2. How quickly time flies when you are having fun. Here we are almost at the half way point of the year already. I have so far visited 30 of the 71 clubs in our District so we are well on the way. Diane and I are thoroughly enjoying our visits; without exception the hospitality we have been afforded and the friendliness that has been shown to us is exceptional. I guess we should expect nothing less of our fellow Lions. On these visits I have spoken about our experiences at International Convention and of the four main International Projects of Sight First, Disaster Relief, Measles Eradication and the Special Olympics, but I have spoken mainly about President Joe Preston’s theme of Strengthen the Pride, I have spoken about Membership, plus my own particular hobby horse of Female Membership. I have asked clubs to help me achieve my goal of one additional member net for the year – this would mean an additional 70 members in our District and that of course equates to 140 more hands! I have been pleased to induct new members, award Life Memberships and numerous other awards. And club members have been generous in their contributions to my “Footy” collection in aid of the Australian Lions Foundation. I am however becoming increasingly concerned at the number of clubs who have not had their audits completed (some for a number of years) and as a consequence have not had an AGM or filed their Annual Return with the Office of Fair Trading. It must be remembered that Lions are the custodians of public monies and not only is it a moral responsibility, it is a requirement of Lions International that an audit is completed and submitted to the members at an AGM. It is a legal requirement that the Annual Return be submitted. Those clubs who have not yet attended to these matters run the risk of being placed in Status Quo, or worse still, having their Charter withdrawn. November has seen a large number of membership drops and again I am seeing that the majority are “Resigned in Good Standing”. This really tells me that there is a problem within these clubs and that these clubs should have a good hard look at themselves. Conduct a Member Satisfaction Survey and you might discover some surprises. Just remember, retaining the members we already have is much easier than recruiting new ones. Our District Convention was held over the weekend 21-23 November at Camp Kanga, Proserpine and it is one that will be remembered and talked about for a long time to come – and all for the right reasons. District Governor Gordon Bailey The 201Q2 District Governor’s Bulletin Issue 6 – December 2014 Greetings to all in our great District of 201Q2.

The convention committee comprised representatives of the Lions and Lionesses of Zone 9 under the guidance of PDG Doug Winterflood and what a fantastic job they did. The camp was presented

in terrific condition and I thank our managers Kay and Ray Spiller. Rollingstone Lions provided their giant Marquee which was the main venue, with the Main Hall being used for administration, displays and breakfast as well as the Lioness Forum, and for the Banquet, bus transport was provided to and from The Proserpine Civic Centre.

Our official Guests were PID Cliff Heywood and Helen from New Zealand, Q3 DG Greg Rollason and Wendy, Q4 DG David Trigg and Lorraine, Dr Tracey Bjorkman of the Lions Medical Research team, and Paul Grainger of Beyond Blue.

PID Cliff was outstanding as the keynote speaker, delivering his message in his own amusing way; Dr Tracey’s address on her Perinatal research was most interesting and eye opening; and Paul Grainger’s address on behalf of Beyond Blue was thought provoking and enlightening. Brian Egan from Aussie Helpers

gave an address on the way Lions and Aussie Helpers are partnering to assist in drought relief. Donations of $5,000 were awarded to each of the Lions Medical Research Foundation, Beyond Blue and to the Drought Appeal. By far the highlight of the convention was the Banquet on Saturday night. The theme for the night was “Wizard of Oz” and almost without exception everyone dressed to the theme, not guessing the reason. The reason turned out to be a Judy Garland tribute and was absolutely fantastic and all thanks to the committee and in particular Gloria DeMartini for a night that will be remembered for years to come. I have lost count of the number of people who told me that this was the best convention they have ever attended.

Diane joins me in wishing you all a happy and safe festive season. Gordon

District Awards for 2013/14

The following Clubs and Members were honoured with receiving District Awards for 2013/14, at the 2014 Q2 District Convention at Lions Camp Kanga.

Clubs across our District provide a wonderful range of support for their communities and these annual awards form some recognition from District for Clubs’ and Members’ contribution.

Clubs are reminded that awards can only be made if District is advised of projects and donations etc. The annual awards available are listed in the District Constitution with the criteria for the Top Club published in the Club Presidents’ manual each year. Both the constitution and manual are provided to clubs each year on the club CD Rom.

Congratulations to those awarded, and I thank all Clubs and Lions for their contribution in 2013/14.

Keep up the great work.

Dear Lions, Lioness and Leos, By the time you get to read this article many of you will have been to Convention and have had the opportunity to listen to some interesting speakers and their messages and would have seen some of our Lions projects on display. Now you are back in your Clubs what will you do to support those projects you have heard about and seen on the weekend? Whilst there are many projects in our local community that we need to consider, we should not lose sight of the projects that can make a difference to not only our local community but also communities around our Multiple District and the Globe, a lot of us seem to have forgotten or have not learned that we are members of Lions Clubs International and should be helping where we can and no matter where it is. Our District has projects that need support for example Camp Kanga and Stinger Research, our Lions Medical Research Foundation which you were privileged to hear about at Convention (this Foundation belongs to us Queenslanders), then there are projects like Christmas Cakes, Mints, Hearing Dogs and Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research just to name a few.

I made a comment a little while ago, and I think maybe it refers to many Clubs, that we seem to be doing a lot of fundraising without any particular goal. In the past Lions had a slogan that said “We make a difference” and I think it is time that we thought about making that difference when we go out to fundraise, be it a sausage sizzle, raffle or whatever, think about where these funds raised will make a difference. Once that decision has been made, make sure you advertise it. Get some signage, talk about it and how these funds will help, get some background on the project so everyone knows what they are talking about. I realise that some Clubs do it right but there are others that need to be reminded and new Clubs and new members informed, how many of your members know the extent of our Lions Projects?

How long is it since your Club had a planning meeting to discuss the year and the direction it will take? If it did have one I would suggest that most of the talk was about membership, not projects or where the funds would go, if I am wrong please tell me. I wish you all a Safe and Happy Christmas with Family and Friends.

Lions Ebola Aid for Orphaned Children

Dear Lions,

Lions are working to eliminate measles and rubella. However, many Lions in Australia have asked me

whether Lions can help with the terrible outbreak of Ebola in West Africa that has taken over 5,000 lives

and orphaned 4,000 children.

Behind the scenes LCIF has discussed the situation with the Lions of Africa and our LCIF Chairperson IPIP

Barry Palmer has announced a US$150,000 Grant for Ebola Aid. The funds will assist the 167 Clubs and

more than 8,000 Lions who live in the affected areas to care for the orphaned children. These children,

having lost both parents to Ebola, and subsequently are on the streets, hungry and without basic health

needs.

Lions will help these orphaned children to gain shelter, receive food, health checks and education. There

are growing food storages in the affected countries.

This is a start, but so many more donations are required to meet the basic needs of these orphaned

children

LCIF Chairperson IPIP Barry Palmer is asking Lions in Australia to help. Send your donation cheques in

Australian Dollars made out to LCI/LCIF – Ebola Aid to your District Cabinet Treasurer for banking.

As this is a LCIF designated project, donations are not eligible for the Melvin Jones Fellowship program.

Remember, 100% of your donations go to help save the lives of these orphaned children.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Jeny Message from the Chairperson:

Lions Mobilizing Support for Ebola Victims

In recent months, we have all watched as an outbreak of Ebola has gripped West Africa. The outbreak has taken more than 5,000 lives, and it is estimated that more than 4,000 children have been orphaned. A lack of health education and growing food shortages in these countries are proving to be a disastrous combination. Lions, I am appealing to you to join me in offering support.

We Lions have a long-standing history of helping those who need us around the world. Today at the Europa Forum, I announced that Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) will provide a US$150,000 grant for Ebola Aid. Several countries, including Japan and Sweden, have already committed their support.

With 167 clubs and more than 8,000 Lions in affected countries, Lions and LCIF are pledging their support for those most in need. Please consider making a donation to LCIF’s Ebola Aid campaign and bring hope to Ebola victims, their families and those affected by the outbreak.

I want to thank you for your support and your commitment to meeting humanitarian needs whenever and wherever they arise.

Sincerely, Barry J. Palmer Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

Lions Empower Impoverished Women

Dear Lions,

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has always provided Grants to assist people to rebuild their

lives rather than just provide handouts.

Lions does change lives for the better.

Last week our LCIF Chairperson IPIP Barry Palmer continued our great tradition of providing a helping

hand by signing Memorandums of Understanding with two organisations involved in getting

impoverished women into work or owning their own small business.

The first, an initiative of the Lions of Great Britain, is a partnership with the Loomba Foundation founded

by Lord Raj Loomba CBE and his wife Veena; established in the U.K. in 1997 it operates mainly in India.

The inspiration came from Raj’s late mother, Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, who became a widow at the

early age of 37 and succeeded in educating her seven young children single-handed.

The aims of the Loomba Foundation is to promote the welfare and economic empowerment of

disadvantaged widows and educate their children. Together with Lions the Foundation is supplying

sewing machines to women in India to generate incomes.

The second partnership is with the Hand in Hand organisation that fights poverty and creates jobs for

women. Currently they have found 1,490,484 jobs for women across Asia – their goal is 5,000,000 jobs by

2020.

One by one Lions are rebuilding lives and providing self-sufficiency.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Jeny

Cabinet 201 Q2 November 2014 LCIF AND ALF chairman Barry Brockbank.

ALF We have received some major support from ALF over the last year $100,000 for the drought relief for the Townsville Castle Hill club $737 for the Rollingstone club hoist project $1100 for the Rollingstone and District project $15000 for the Thuringowa Alice River club Den $12500 for the Edmonton club project $6500 for Camp Kanga Kitchen equipment $7000 for the Atherton club for a meals on wheels vehicle

LCIF A new project to support the drought relief is being prepared now worth $120,000 for the 4 Qld and 2 NSW districts. This was initiated by Phil Highland and has resulted in a brand new trial grant system being set up. I am requesting that all cabinet members and Lions Clubs consider supporting our foundations please.

Dear Lions,

Being a Lion means caring about our communities and about the well-being of others. Lions want to help people have better lives, and Lions Clubs Foundation (LCIF) supports that compassionate work. Through vision screenings, service projects and community involvement, Lions and LCIF are making positive contributions every day.

LCIF works to fight diseases worldwide. In West Africa, we are providing support to those affected by Ebola, focusing primarily on food programs for vulnerable communities. An even more contagious and deadly disease is measles. Measles kills 330 children each day, and may create lasting health issues for those who survive. There is a global need for vaccination efforts to fight this disease. Lions and LCIF continue to work tirelessly with our partners to bring vaccination campaigns to the areas of the world where they are most needed. In October, Lions in Tanzania were key social mobilization partners in a GAVI-supported MR campaign that vaccinated some 21 million children between 9 months to 14 years against measles and rubella. Your donation supports Lions as they make sure that children have access to life-saving vaccines.

Thank you for your support and your dedication to improving health worldwide!

On Sunday the 9th of November 2014, members of the Ignatius Park College First 13 Rugby League team assisted the Castle Hill Lions club at the annual ‘Spinal Injuries Australian Cruise for a Cause’ day. The boys are part of the Colleges Rugby League program and are preparing for the upcoming season in which they will compete in the National GIO Cup competition as well as the State wide Confraternity Shield. With the expanding travel involved to compete in such elite competitions, the cost of getting the boys to and from games is significant. Through an ongoing relationship with the Castle Hill Lions and their generous support, the cost to compete for individual students will be reduced, making the competition more assessable for all students. The boys really enjoyed the day and were grateful for the opportunity to not only interact with the wider community, but also play their part in a significant and worthy cause. The Rugby League department at Ignatius Park College would like to thank the Castle Hill Lions Club for allowing us to be part of the day. Your support is greatly appreciated and we look forward to assisting in any way possible into the future.

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN AUSSI LAND

‘Twas the night before Christmas; there wasn’t

a sound.

Not a possum was stirring; no-one was around.

We’d left on the table some tucker and beer,

Hoping that Santa Claus soon would be here;

We children were snuggled up safe in our beds,

While dreams of pavlova danced ’round in our

heads;

And Mum in her nightie, and Dad in his shorts,

Had just settled down to watch TV sports.

When outside the house a mad ruckus arose;

Loud squeaking and banging woke us from our

doze.

We ran to the screen door, peeked cautiously out

snuck onto the deck, then let out a shout.

Guess what had woken us up from our snooze,

But a rusty old Ute pulled by eight mighty ‘roos.

The cheerful man driving was giggling with glee,

And we both knew at once who this plump bloke

must be.

Now, I’m telling the truth it’s all dinki-di,

Those eight kangaroos fairly soared through the

sky.

Santa leaned out the window to pull at the reins,

And encouraged the ‘roos, by calling their

names.

‘Now, Kylie! Now, Kirsty! Now, Shazza and

Shane!

On Kipper! On, Skipper! On, Bazza and Wayne!

Park up on that water tank. Grab a quick drink,

I’ll scoot down the gum tree. Be back in a wink!’

So up to the tank those eight kangaroos flew,

With the Ute full of toys, and Santa Claus too.

He slid down the gum tree and jumped to the

ground,

Then in through the window he sprang with a

bound.

He had bright sunburned cheeks and a milky

white beard.

A jolly old joker was how he appeared.

He wore red stubby shorts and old thongs on his

feet,

And a hat of deep crimson as shade from the

heat.

His eyes – bright as opals – Oh! How they

twinkled!

And, like a goanna, his skin was quite wrinkled!

His shirt was stretched over a round bulging

belly

Which shook when he moved, like a plate full of

jelly.

A fat stack of prezzies he flung from his back,

And he looked like a swaggie unfastening his

pack.

He spoke not a word, but bent down on one knee

To position our goodies beneath the yule tree.

Surfboard and footy-ball shapes for us two.

And for Dad, tongs to use on the new barbeque.

A mysterious package he left for our Mum,

Then he turned and he winked and he held up

his thumb;

He strolled out on deck and his ‘roos came on

cue;

Flung his sack in the back and prepared to shoot

through.

He bellowed out loud as they swooped past the

gates-

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, and good onya,

MATES!’

Merry Christmas everyone!!!
