VIRGINIA GERIATRICS SOCIETY: The Virginia Geriatrics Society (VGS) is an affiliate of the American Geriatrics Society. Membership in VGS provides priority access to all educational opportunities, free continuing education units (CEs and CMEs) at dinner meetings, discounted registration fee for the annual Virginia Geriatrics Conference, networking with Geriatrics and Gerontology professionals and opportunity to impact Geriatrics at the state and national levels. Cost of Membership is just $50 annually.

Course DescriptionThis conference is designed to provide participants (physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, physician assistants and other health professionals) with advanced information through presentations, lectures and symposia. Topics will include the latest information on diagnosis, management, treatment and health policy for common problems in the aging population. With its theme of “Clinical Pearls on a Silver Thread”, the 25th annual meeting of the Virginia Geriatrics Society meeting will provide information designed for front-line care providers, including insight from experience and review of recent research which will help participants to improve their care of older adults.

Course ObjectivesBy the conclusion of this conference, attendees should be able to:1. Understand assessment and management of dementia and related problems including

depression in dementia, elder abuse and neglect, caregiver support, mild cognitive impairment.

2. Address common geriatric conditions including: metabolic health, dyspepsia, fibromyalgia, clostridium difficile infections, and complex pain management.

3. Identify best practices for medication management and treatment goals when managing common conditions: avoiding adverse effects of medication such as QTc prolongation, safe use of anti-platelet therapy, selecting cost-effective medications.

4. Describe new options for minimally invasive medical and surgical treatment and management of prostate, eye, lung and airway disorders.

5. Incorporate new and alternative approaches to health care such as telemedicine and acupuncture.

PHYSICIAN CREDIT: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of University Health Services Professional Education Programs (UHS-PEP) of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System and the Virginia Geriatrics Society. UHS-PEP is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

UHS-PEP designates this live activity for a maximum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits(TM) Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

NON-PHYSICIAN CREDIT: This continuing education activity meets the criteria of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 2.0 CEUs will be awarded and recorded with the University.

This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Conference participants will have the opportunity to earn up to 20 contact hours based on attendance of the entire conference.VNA-CEA approval #14-04-05S

This activity has been approved for 2 (two) continuing education units (20 contact hours), depending on participation, from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Education.

VCU School of Pharmacy, Office of Continuing Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Upon successful completion of all learning assessment activities and submission of an evaluation form, participants will receive 20.00 contact hours (2.00 CEUs).
