The Michigan Archival Association invites you to attend its 2013 Annual Meeting in beautiful Ann Arbor, founded in 1824 by land speculators John Allen and Elisha Rumsey. In addition to being home to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor has many restaurants, specialty shops, and galleries to enjoy. From Bluffs Nature Area to the Hands-On Museum, Ann Arbor offers something for everyone.

Conference Coordinator Diane Hatfield, Program Chair Melinda Isler, and Local Arrangements Chair Elizabeth Skene have put together an impressive schedule of sessions and activities. Conference attendees will also enjoy unique tours and a reception hosted by the Bentley Historical Library.

Accommodations this year are at Weber’s Restaurant & Boutique Hotel. After more than 75 years, Weber’s has maintained a reputation for fine dining and is considered one of Michigan’s best hotels. All meals and sessions will take place at the conference hotel. Keynote Speaker

Joining us as our keynote speaker this year is Dr. Francis X. Blouin, Jr., director of the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan. As Dr. Blouin is nearing the end of his directorship of the Bentley Library, his talk, entitled Documenting Michigan History: A Perspective from Nearly Forty Years at It, is particularly meaningful.

Dr. Blouin has lectured widely on archival issues throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He organized a special year-long Sawyer Seminar on fundamental issues relating to the nature, structure, and politics of archival collections and institutions within a context of rapid technological change. The proceedings of those seminars have been published as Archives, Documentation, and Institutions of Social Memory by the University of Michigan Press.

Dr. Blouin is interested in a wide variety of archival issues, particularly from an international perspective. One of his works, Vatican Archives: An Inventory and Guide to the Historical Documents of the Holy See, presents the first-ever conceptual overview of papal archival records. For this volume he received grants ` from the Getty, Mellon, Lilly, and Homeland Foundations, as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Blouin joined the staff of the Bentley Library in 1974 and is leaving behind a legacy of tremendous growth of the library, its holdings, and its functions.
