NOTE FROM MATT

WHERE TO GET TICKETS

Welcome to the fifth St Albans Film Festival. It is great to be back with an amazing programme of workshops, short films and feature films, all based on this year’s theme of ’Speed’

So, whether it is fast cars, fast talking or fast people, we have something for you.

And after last year’s success, we welcome back our Open Air Cinema in the beautiful setting of St Albans Cathedral grounds, with a whole of host of films, including our parent and toddler screening, our family fun day, our teenage special, plus our ‘Affordable Cinema’, where you can pay what you can to watch a film.

Other highlights include a VR workshop in the newly reopening St Albans Museum and Gallery, a stand up comedy show at the Fleetville Larder, a UK Premiere - What Doesn’t Kill me at the Maltings Art Theatre, A walking photography tour hosted by Ben Roper, plus the amazing documentary Senna, screened at the Pudding Stop.

A massive thanks as always to my partner in film, Leoni Kibbey who support, creativity and enthusiasm has helped produce another amazing festival.

And of course, this festival could never happen without our sponsors, hosts, friends and volunteers. Thank you.

I hope whatever event you attend over the festival this year that you enjoy yourself and have a brilliant week.

This sensitive film by British film maker, Rachel Meyrick tells the story of the women and children who are fighting back against a court system biased toward male privilege and wealth. WHAT DOESN’T KILL ME exposes a national travesty compared by some to the Catholic Church scandal. A timely film for America; where radical misogyny is being exposed even in the highest offices and institutions in the country.

William Friedkin’s gritty police drama portrays two tough New York City cops trying to intercept a huge heroin shipment coming from France. An interesting contrast is established between ‘Popeye’ Doyle, a short-tempered alcoholic bigot who is nevertheless a hard-working and dedicated police officer, and his nemesis Alain Charnier, a suave and urbane gentleman who is nevertheless a criminal and one of the largest drug suppliers of pure heroin to North America. During the surveillance and eventual bust, Friedkin provides one of the most gripping and memorable car chase sequences ever filmed.

SATURDAY 30TH JUNE / SUNDAY 1ST JULY ST ALBANS FILM FESTIVAL 2018

HECTORDATE: SATURDAY 30TH JUNE TIME: 7.30PMVENUE: METRO BANK,

77 ST PETER’S STREET, ST ALBANS, AL1 3ED.

As part of the St Albans Film Festival and in collaboration with the St Albans Arts Team and Metro Bank, we are screening ‘Hector’, the story of a man who has been living on the motorways for years. His once comfortable family life has been replaced by a never-ending tour of service stations that offer him shelter, anonymity, washing facilities and food. The story follows his journey south from Scotland on his annual pilgrimage to a temporary Christmas shelter in London where he finds comfort, friendship and warmth.

This film is part of the ‘Squatlife’ Project which features an Exhibition of Dave Kotula’s 1980’s squat photographs at the new St Albans Museum and Gallery from Saturday 14th July through to Sunday 26th August. There are a number of free events, including a performance at the Abbey Theatre on Friday 27th July of the nationally acclaimed Cardboard Citizens, with actors from the local homeless community telling their stories in a ‘forum theatre’ production. Walk a Day in My Shoes will feature a selection of photographs from Herts Young Homeless facilitated by a professional photographer. This project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund along with contributions from St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, Rumball Sedgwick and 1Life.

We would like to thank Metro Bank for offering this venue and supporting the project and St Albans Film Festival for featuring us in their programme.

The film was produced by StudioCanal, Working Title Films, and Midfield Films, and was distributed by the parent company of the latter two production companies, Universal Pictures.

The film’s narrative focuses on Senna’s racing career in Formula One, from his debut in the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix to his death in an accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, with particular emphasis on his rivalry with fellow driver Alain Prost. It relies primarily on archive racetrack footage and home video clips provided by the Senna family, rather than retrospective video interviews, and has no formal commentary.
