First Lady of the State of New JerseyTammy Snyder Murphy

“I cannot tell you how very thrilled we are to now have an official mandate to continue listening and working together – with you – to bring out the very best of our state.”

– Tammy Murphy

Tammy Snyder Murphy’s upbringing, career, and worldview have been consistently shaped and defined by family, education, service, and leadership. Whether running for student office during college, thriving in a competitive

and male-dominated industry, starting and working with non-profits, or joining the Women’s March in Trenton, Ms. Murphy has always believed in problem-solving through coalition-building and participation.

Tammy and Governor Philip D. Murphy have been married for 23 years and together have four children: Josh, Emma, Charlie, and Sam.

A transformative experience for the Murphy family was proudly representing the United States in the Federal Republic of Germany. Tammy, individually and together with her husband, spoke and led on behalf of the United States of America. She chaired meetings, gave speeches, and hosted meals and receptions, strengthening our nation’s relationship with a critical ally while impacting the lives of thousands of Germans and Americans.

Upon returning to New Jersey, Tammy and Phil realized that the incredible state they called home was in need of bold new leadership. Together, they founded a think tank to explore ways to help grow the middle class and jumpstart New Jersey’s economy. Most recently, Tammy has been energized and inspired traveling the state and meeting New Jerseyans to hear their concerns, both with Phil and as his surrogate, utilizing her experience in the private and nonprofit sectors to work through policy ideas and solutions, and supporting and advising the Governor on his transition.

A graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A., English and Communications, 1987), Tammy currently sits on the University’s Board of Visitors. She also serves as Secretary and charter member of The Climate Reality Action Fund, an organization founded by former Vice-President Al Gore. Over the years, Tammy has worked with non-profits, a think-tank, and other organizations focused on the environment, education, health care, youth and family services, as well as the arts and trans-Atlantic relations. Tammy previously worked in finance in the U.S. and Europe and has traveled extensively throughout the world living overseas in each of London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, and Berlin. She speaks German and some Italian.

As First Lady, Tammy Snyder Murphy will continue being a partner to Phil as he works with Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver to tackle the formidable challenges facing the state and its incredible residents.

Message from the Dean of DouglassJacquelyn Litt, Ph.D.

Dear Class of 2018,

On behalf of Douglass Residential College, our staff and fellow students, it gives me great pleasure to congratu-late you on this incredible distinction, earning your undergraduate degree. I am immensely proud as you become distinguished alumnae of Douglass. This year’s convocation has the added resonance of taking place during the centennial celebration of Douglass. On

September 18, 1918, the doors of College Hall opened and 54 brave young women entered, ready to chart the course of history. You are now a special part of this incredible Douglass history.

The Douglass mission today is to inspire Douglass women to learn, lead and live with conviction, creativity and critical insight. During your first convocation I challenged you to “claim your education,” and to be the “rightful owner” of your experience. I have seen you transform from your initial days on campus as eager and intelligent yet unsure students into the confident and determined graduates you are today. You have led student groups, created art exhibits, performed moving concerts, and written compelling articles. You have discovered strengths, embraced opportunities, and created life-long connections.

Thank you for contributing so greatly to the Douglass community. My wish is that you continue to make an indelible mark on the world. Whether through conducting research, treating patients, instructing students, creating social change, caring for kin, or running your own business, your work matters. Al-though the world has changed rapidly since you entered Douglass, you have remained steadfast in your convictions, dedicated to creating a better world and seeing the humanity in others. The issues you face today are great and vast. We look to you to contribute your wisdom to help solve the pressing issues of our time. I am confident that you will succeed.

Graduates of the Class of 2018, we will miss you greatly and hope you return often. On behalf of Douglass, I share heartfelt congratulations!

Warmly,

Jacquelyn Litt, Ph.D.

Convocation SpeakerImbolo MbueImbolo Mbue is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Behold the Dreamers, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the Blue Metropolis Words to Change Award, and was an Oprah’s Book Club selection. Named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times and the Washington Post and a Best Book of the Year by close to a dozen publications, the novel has been translated into 10 languages, adapted into an opera, and optioned for a movie.

A native of the seaside town of Limbe, Cameroon and a graduate of Rutgers and Columbia universities, Imbolo Mbue currently lives in New York City.

This New York Times best selling novel has earned top ratings from reviewers and other well-known authors. The Los Angeles Review of Books advises that, “. . . Mbue does an admirable job of developing characters whose lives seem so heartbreakingly real… When you close the book, you will hear their pain. You might feel them calling for you.” Writing with warmth, this debut book portrays a young Cameroonian couple making a new life in New York just as the Great Recession upends the economy. The story deals with marriage, immigration, class, race, and the trapdoors in the American Dream.

SPECIAL THANKS TO:

Douglass Residential College staff and friends;

Donors to Douglass Residential College; and

Donors to The Douglass Fund and AADC who have

made this event possible.

Gonfalons are flags or banners hung from crosspieces on poles, used since medieval times, particularly in the republics of Italy as symbols of state or office. In recent years, many universities and colleges have adopted gonfalons to increase the ceremonial nature of academic convocations and exercises. Rutgers University first officially displayed unit gonfalons in the 1966 Commencement Convocation celebrating the two hundredth anniversary of its founding.

Douglass Residential College regularly processes or displays three gonfalons on ceremonial occasions, each representing an historical period in the evolution of the college. The gonfalons today are carried by recognized student leaders.

The New Jersey College for Women 1918-1955

The gonfalon has a white field on a black background with the seal of the New Jersey College for Women in scarlet red—the traditional color of the University and the College. The seal as it appears on the NJC gonfalon is actually the version placed in use in 1931, differing slightly from the original designed by the Class of 1922. The motto in Greek is loosely translated as “Wisdom and Self Determination” and the image of a pine tree was incorporated in the original seal. The NJC gonfalon was designed by the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College specifically for the inaugural convocation of Dean Jacquelyn Litt.

Douglass College 1955-2007

The Douglass College gonfalon was designed for the 1966 Rutgers University Commencement convocation. The Douglass College emblem designed for use when the college changed its name is displayed in the chief (upper) compartment of the banner. The vertical stripes represent the degrees awarded—white for the Bachelor of Arts and yellow for the Bachelor of Science—and the scarlet University color. Douglass Residential College 2007–Present

The simple gonfalon displays the iconic and unique red pine tree designed in 1955 by Professor of Art Robert Bradshaw, representing the unusual pine trees found on the grounds surrounding College Hall. The earliest students asserted that the pine tree was quite naturally accepted as the symbol of the college and that remains true to the current day. The Red Pine gonfalon was first presented at Dean Litt’s inaugural convocation.

Douglass Residential College builds on the distinct mission of the New Jersey College for Women (NJC), founded in 1918, and Douglass College,

named for its first Dean, Mabel Smith Douglass.

Douglass Alma Mater Douglass TodayMusic by Nancy Hoffacker Miller, 1954

Words by Jean Gruen Munzer, 1956

Hear our voices, Alma Mater.

Douglass College, hail to thee!

Hearts in song now join together

In a pledge of fealty.

Though our future paths may sever,

Thoughts of golden college days

In our hearts will live forever

As a constant song of praise.

Douglass Residential College at Rutgers University New Brunswick cultivates

the knowledge, skills, and resources women need to take up the challenges

and opportunities of the twenty-first century.

Founded in 1918 as the New Jersey College for Women with 54 students and

12 books in its library, Douglass has grown into a diverse and vibrant community

of 2,600 undergraduate women scholars and over 39,000 dedicated alumnae.

Douglass offers undergraduate women the best of both worlds: the education of

a world-class research university enhanced by cutting-edge curricula within

a close-knit women’s college community. Our students participate in

an expansive and innovative array of opportunities, including our Douglass

Project for Rutgers Women in STEM (now in its thirtieth year), international

service travel, living learning communities on contemporary topics of relevance

for women in our Global Village, a leadership and professional development

program, public policy experience, a Douglass Honors College Community

program, and a common course on the status of women.

Douglass provides unique opportunities for connecting students to alumnae

through mentoring, externships, internships, and unique programming

designed to cultivate intellectual and personal dialogue across generations of

Douglass women.

Powered by 100 years of educational excellence, Douglass continues to advance

the academic success of women by amplifying their intellectual, social, and

personal strengths. The combination of mission-focused education, within a

preeminent national research university, sets the stage for women to achieve

and lead in a diverse and global world.
