The Resilience ShiftProgramme

Influencing policy

Understanding how different mixes of legislation and policy instruments can incentivise and create the environment for enhanced critical infrastructure resilience.

EXAMPLE

Capturing the journey of how the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) worked with industry to develop a third party, independent Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating scheme.

Shaping practice

Exploring tools and approaches that can help create a shift from resilience thinking into practice.

EXAMPLE

Focusing on the water sector, we have developed a water governance approach and associated tools for resilient water systems to improve the resilience of the urban water system. A city water resilience community of practice has been announced.

This approach was successfully applied in Cape Town and Miami, leading to the development of action plans in these cities.

Sharing learning

Advancing a common understanding of resilient systems, both within and between critical sectors.

EXAMPLE

Lessons and learnings from Cape Town water crisis - how it developed and how the city’s water authority, politicians, businesses and residents responded and the lasting impact it has had on how the city manages and uses water. The purpose of the project was to explore what London and other cities can learn from Cape Town’s experience.

VALUE-BASED APPROACH TO INFRASTRUCTURE RESILIENCE

A challenge for critical infrastructure is breaking down silos within and between infrastructure sectors. We’ve found that the infrastructure lifecycle value chain is useful for connecting the concepts of resilience and value across the different parts.

Continuous Learning & Improvement identification

Value Identification

Value Delivery

A safer and better world through resilient infrastructure

The Resilience Shift exists to inspire and empower a global community to make the world safer through resilient infrastructure.

More people than ever depend on critical infrastructure systems. Our aim is to ensure infrastructure systems are able to Adapt, Respond and Recover quickly from anticipated or unexpected shocks and stresses - now and in the future.

Supported by Lloyd’s Register Foundation and Arup, the Resilience Shift provides knowledge and tools for those responsible for planning, financing, designing, delivering, operating and maintaining critical infrastructure systems.

As part of London Climate Action Week, the Resilience Shift hosted a film screening and panel discussion exploring the lessons to be learned from Cape Town’s water crisis.
