2013 – What changed?

As part of AANS Strategic Planning

President-Elect REH makes International

Friendship a major thematic priority

Page 6: The AANS International Program 2015aacns2015.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/06-Christopher...The AANS International Program 2015 Christopher M. Loftus MD, Dr. h.c., FAANS Professor

The REH-CML Concept – Nov

2013 Goal – integration and central control of all international functions including:

1. Combined meetings with partner societies, to be programmatic and scheduled.

2. Membership, compare to CNS amenities and do better. Believe me, the overseas surgeons are making comparisons, and we should too.

3. Industry initiatives.

4. Scientific program international speakers.

5. Fellowships and exchanges.

6. Lifetime achievement award winners.

7. Honored lecturers at annual meeting.

8. Vetted speakers list to international societies for their meetings.

9. CME offerings to international members/societies.

10. International amenities and receptions at annual meeting.

11. Sales and distribution of journal and publication products overseas.

12. Translation of book products for sales overseas.

13. Ambassador function attendance at international meetings. We need to be seen, participate and be almost ubiquitous to make this work. At the risk of sounding self-serving, it will take an individual with established international visibility to make this project work.

14. The project will be significantly enhanced if AANS Presidents will also consider joining the travel group as much as possible, guided in choice of best venues by the Medical Director. (i.e send a team of three).

15. Coordination of amenities for international luminaries attending AANS meeting, i.e. Medical Director can identify which internationals should receive invites to President’s Reception and Cushing Oration luncheon. This is a huge honor for them.

16. Periodic review of international website pages – the fact of life is that the website and emails are the vehicles for international communication and information dissemination.

17. AANS delegates need to be coached and prepped and show up to vote at the WFNS Executive Council meeting, and AANS members of the WFNS Nominating Committee need to show up and vote when this committee meets every two years. At a recent meeting, in San Francisco, every international member came from around the world but no Americans showed up even in their own country. Looked terrible for AANS.

18. The AANS needs to coordinate their nominations for WFNS officer positions with a programmed leadership and succession plan to showcase the best people, this should be coordinated by the Medical Director, who ideally would be someone with intimate knowledge of the WFNS.
