When it was re-issued in 1957, achildren's book reviewer hailedevent with these words: "Despite

the ABC books that have come our. . . since this was first published

Anne Carroll Moore, the famoushildren's librarian, stated: "We may

feel proud that an ABC book soadmirable in design and in color print-ing has been produced on this side ofthe Atlantic. Mr. Falls designed thebook for his little three-year-old daugh-ter who likes a big book with lots ofpictures. The drawings are cut onwood blocks and printed from four-color plates, and the artist has person-ally superintended the reproduction ofthem. The imagination of a child orgrown-up is left free to capture by itsown thrill of recognition the familiarin a new-old medium where color hasnot obscured the outline nor playedtoo many tricks with nature.

"The book will take its own place inthe art departments of schools and li-braries, but the fact that it was designedfor a living child for whose mentalitythe artist had such evident respectstamps it first of all as a children's bookwhich bids fair to exert a very consid-erable influence on American picturebooks."
