WHO WE ARE: THE ACADEMYThe Health Management Academy (The Academy) is a knowledge-based company exclusively for executives of the largest integrated health systems and the industry’s most innovative healthcare companies. Founded in 1998, the same decade many of the Leading Health Systems were created, The Academy and its members have evolved together. Since its inception, The Academy has built a material record of leadership development, independent research and policy analysis, and has become the definitive trusted source for peer-to-peer knowledge exchange for the largest integrated health systems.

The Academy’s model of educational programming (1) assesses the top priorities of its members, (2) monitors the organization and development of large health system executive teams, and (3) facilitates structured interaction among its health system membership. Executive members exchange best practices and benchmark information to increase the quality and efficiency of healthcare.

EXECUTIVE FORUMS AND SUMMITSThe Academy convenes peer groups of C-suite executives from Leading Health Systems to learn from one another and share best practices. Today, this takes place through 18 Executive Forums and Summits, each pertaining to a specific C-suite role (CEO, CFO, CMO, etc.).

C-suite health system leaders meet twice annually to interact in an open, transparent environment where real issues are safely discussed. This fosters a culture of learning through problem-solving and rigorous discussion with a future-oriented view. The twice-a-year meetings include the latest health system research, peer case studies, topical discussions, informative lectures, policy updates and networking events designed to build and nurture the personal and exclusive peer network

Fellows attend Executives Forums to gain exposure to new roles and strategic thinking.

TEAM-BASED COLLABORATIVESThe Academy also convenes Collaboratives which bring together multi-disciplinary teams from Leading Health Systems and corporate members with topical expertise for a series of meetings. Subject matter experts, Academy Executives-in-Residence, and Academy Consulting Faculty also participate to accelerate innovation around key industry challenges such as Population Health, Advanced Analytics, Cybersecurity, and Consumerism.

Fellows may attend a Collaborative as an elective for deeper dives into a specific topic approached from a variety of perspectives.

A HISTORY OF EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT: THE ACADEMY GE FELLOWS PROGRAM FOR ADMINISTRATIVE, FINANCE, NURSE & PHYSICIAN EXECUTIVESIn 2001, The Academy conducted research comparing programs that identify and develop high-potential leaders of the largest health systems with those of the Fortune “Most Admired” Companies. The results concluded that leadership development programs in large health systems were substantially behind their counterparts in industry.

To that end, The Academy, in partnership with GE Healthcare, launched The Academy GE Fellows Program in 2006 to provide leadership development curriculum and training for executives who aspired to assume senior executive, C-suite, positions. Originally developed for high-potential physician executives, the 2-year Fellows Program has expanded to four different executive specializations: Administrative, Finance, Nurse and Physician.

The program has produced 200 graduates, with 81 Fellows currently in the program. Graduates span the health system C-suite, holding titles of: CEO, CAO, CFO, CCO, CMO, CNO, CHRO, and Medical Group President.

The Academy GE Fellows Program’s core driver is the formation of a nationwide peer group of diverse healthcare professionals. Taught and mentored by highly qualified faculty alongside current and retired health system executives that span the C-suite, participants learn from the past experiences, current undertakings, and future endeavors of health system strategic initiatives while engaging with a curriculum grounded in leadership and healthcare business knowledge.

“The chance to attend GE’s Crotonville Experience offers a tremendous educational experience, as well as the opportunity to develop relationships for the future. GE has done a wonderful job creating a special educational environment, and the opportunity to attend is once-in-a-lifetime. Many thanks to GE for allowing The Academy to offer this program to its Fellows.”Steve Hester, M.D., System VP & CMO Norton Healthcare

“The opportunity to develop a project for the Fellowship that paralleled my work responsibilities was critical. The Action Project provides Fellows with hands-on experience that takes the material we learn in the coursework and allows us to apply it firsthand. The Academy resoures available to Fellows as they develop and implement their projects expand the learning potential enormously.”Janice Nevin, M.D,, CEO & 2006 Physician Fellow Christiana Care Health System

“When speaking to our future leaders, what I tell them is that The Academy GE Fellows Program is a ‘one-stop-shop.’ Normally, when advacing one’s career, one needs mentorship, content, networking, experience pushing oneself, and exposure to differenct ways of thinking. Ordinarily, one would have to find these pieces through several different programs and then cobble them together. With The Academy GE Fellows Program, all the pieces are in one neat package”Rod Hochman, M.D., President & CEO Providence St. Joseph Health

“When finances are tight, a program like The Academy GE Fellows progam could be viewed more as a luxury; but for the long-term success of your system, you need to continue to invest in the development of your people. From what I have experienced, The Fellows Program provides a great return on that investment”Mike Lappin, Chief Integration Officer & 2012 Administrative Fellow Advocate Aurora health

SAMPLE ACTION PROJECT

Joyce Dombrouski, R.N.Chief Executive, Western Montana Service Area, Providence Health & ServicesProvidence St. Joseph Health

Deborah Burton, Ph.D., R.N.SVP & CNOProvidence St. Joseph Health

Joyce Dombrouski is the quintessential clinical executive. I have known and worked with Joyce

since 2004 and never cease to be amazed at how artfully she balances clinical quality, operational excellence, strategy, resource management and staff engagement. And she does it all with humility and grace—always lifting up those around her and focusing on why we do the work we do. We are so grateful Ms. Dombrouski chose the Nursing Institute as her Academy GE Fellows Action Project. We have benefited tremendously from her commitment and work, and are inspired to go even further with the vision. Joyce has an incredibly bright professional future, made even brighter by this fellowship opportunity. In my view, Joyce Dombrouski can do just about anything—in making care better and our communities healthier. And she is always a nurse role model, first and foremost.

– Deborah Burton, Ph.D., R.N.

The Providence St. Joseph Health Nursing Institute

OpportunityThe Providence St Joseph Health Nursing Institute was inspired during the 2014 creation of the first system nursing strategic plan. The Institute came to life as all system regional CNOs, led by the system CNO, committed to become the “Best in the West” nursing organization. The Institute has six strategic components, both clinically and professionally focused. It has also served as a highly effective vehicle to bring together two very deep nursing cultures, as Providence Health & Services and St. Joseph Health began merging in 2015.

The economic reality, and our massive spend on external contract nurses, made significantly reducing our excessive agency spend the first Institute priority. A system-wide Clinical Academy was implemented quickly to grow our own specialty nurse supply, to remove agency nurses, to improve overall nurse engagement, and to reduce first year turnover. Our challenge was to continue our critical focus on the broader Institute execution, in the midst of this immediate > $150 million workforce crisis.

Project DescriptionThe Institute emerged as Providence Health & Services and St. Joseph Health formally merged in Summer 2016. Under the consensus of the system CNO and regional nursing leaders, the Nursing Institute expanded far beyond the Clinical Academy: An additional five critical focus areas were strengthened and operationalized: (1) Clinical Practice and Quality, (2) Academic Partnerships, (3) Workforce and Leadership Development, (4) Magnet & Pathway to Excellence, and (5) Research and Innovation.

ResultsSince 2016, the Clinical Academy has launched 17 clinical specialty tracks, and has drastically reduced our over-dependency on external staffing resources.

Total acute RN agency spend has decreased year-over-year by 47%, and increased month-over-month by 11%. Clinical Academy turnover is 51% lower than all nursing FYTO. YTD cumulative 90-day turnover for RN’s who went through a Clinical Academy program is 69% lower than for RN’s who did not. Our new system CNO organizational structure reflects our central focus on the Institute as the core vehicle to deliver on our entire nursing strategic plan. We now have designated leaders and strategic plans for each focus areas, with accountable metrics and targets for each.

ACTION PROJECT OUTCOMES

ACTION PROJECT | YALE NEW HAVEN HEALTHDuring the two-year Fellows Program, each Fellow works in conjunction with their health system mentor and CEO to identify and lead a system-level change management project. Action Projects contribute to the system’s corporate strategic aims, and stretch Fellows to design, implement and evaluate an initiative outside of their primary responsibilities.

Action Projects provide detailed insight into the high-level strategic priorities being addressed by individual systems, tend to improve system-level outcomes, and often act as pilot programs that are later expanded across the health system.

SAMPLE SEMINAR: CMO ISSUES FORUM: Getting to Zero

In a recent research study conducted by The Academy, over 50% of respondents viewed medical errors as a significant issue for their health system and cited that culture, standardizing practice and clinicians’ time were the top barriers to new initiatives around medical errors. During this session, Dr. Tom Balcezak, CMO, Yale New Haven Health, and Dr. Michael Shabot, CCO, Memorial Hermann Health System, will deconstruct a few harm events that have occurred at their health systems. They will address their approach to reducing harm and their belief that removing risk doesn’t require perfect humans but rather improved systems of care.
