Dear Oakland Baptist Family,
First of all, I want to take a moment to thank you for the privilege and honor
you have bestowed upon me to serve as your interim pastor. It is my joy to
serve you during these days as you pray and seek God’s guidance in finding a
new pastor. My wife, Betty, and I look forward to getting to know you and
have already been the recipients of your care, love and prayers in the past
several weeks. During the recent deaths of both our brothers, many of you
reminded us of your prayers and others sent cards expressing your sympathy
and concern. Thanks for welcoming us into the family at Oakland. It is in our
brokenness that we are brought together in the fellowship and love of God’s
Spirit.
As we move into the summer season, I realize this is a time when many people
are traveling, taking vacations and enjoying the long days of sunlight. In the
early church calendar, they called this time of the year “ordinary time.”
Christmas is long past and the Easter season just completed. It is now time to
enter into “ordinary time” – the place where most of life is actually lived.
Though the seasons and times change, we must remember that all of life is
“life with God.” There is no time when we are out of His watchful care and
loving presence.
Although my main responsibilities as interim pastor will be in the area of
preaching, teaching and meeting with various groups such as the deacons and
church council, as time allows, I am available to serve in other ways as well. As
always, my desire is to encourage you along your journey toward God in
whatever way I can.
Betty and I look forward to our days with you… however long the Lord allows.
Our prayer is that God will continue His good work both in and through each of
your lives as He transforms us to be like Christ and works through us to love
others.
Blessings,
Randy & Betty Rains

What Makes A Dad
God took the strength of a mountain The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature,, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it…Dad. WMUV Prayer Calendar
All of the great things the church has been able to accomplish throughout history has come because of prayer.
People devoted to God in prayer. Women in the church, uniting in prayer for the last 140 years, have changed
the world for Christ.
In an effort to provide information about Virginia missions and missionaries and to be more intentional about
praying for Virginia missions, we will launch a daily prayer calendar beginning June 1st. The daily prayer will
follow the prayer calendar as listed in the 2014 ENGAGE publication on pages 26-27. Daily prayer points will be
posted on our facebook page - Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia- each morning and a complete list
will be available on our website at wmuv.org. You will want to download this prayer calendar and make it
available to those who may not have internet or computer access!
We are delighted to have Betsy Akins serving as our WMUV Prayer Coordinator and begin our call to prayer
with a focus on Summer Missions! Thank you for joining us in prayer!
June Prayer Focus – Summer Missions
Ecclesiastes 3:1 shares, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven…” As we
move into longer days “under the sun” let us remember to pray The SON over our summer mission activities.
May our prayers be like a packet of seeds, scattered over the fertile soil of God’s Kingdom work --- prayers
blessing the hearts of children participating in Vacation Bible School; prayers encouraging the hearts of staff
and volunteers serving at our camps; prayers nurturing the hearts of our Abigail Girls, teens and adults as they
prepare for mission trips in Virginia, Standing Rock and beyond and prayers refreshing the hearts of those
pouring themselves out through our Baptist centers.
Our WMU watchword is Mark 8:34, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up
their cross and follow me.” To follow Christ is to Surrender, Sacrifice and Serve --- to give our all to Him ---
even in prayer.
Prayer does change things. Like a seed that sprouts, taking root and growing into a thriving plant or tree,
prayer changes “things” - including us - from the inside, out. So, let us make the most of this summer season
by sowing, watering and nurturing God’s fields with prayer.
