THE ADVENTURE - JANUARY, 2019

THE DEACON’S DISCOURSE . . .
“Another year is dawning: Dear Father, let it be, in working or in waiting, another year with Thee; another year of progress, another year of peace, another year of proving Thy presence all the days.”
Another Year is Dawning WHM #339
Dear Friends in Christ, Well, we made it through another year! It is hard to believe that 2018 is over; the years go by faster and faster. And it seems like only last month that Pastor Sorcek retired. We have been four months without a full-time pastor to lead us and it has been both challenging and rewarding. So many of us have pulled extra duty to get us through and I thank each and every one of you for whatever part you played, large or small, to get us to this point. I hope that everyone who has continued to attend Advent’s worship services has enjoyed the various guest pastors, with their different styles of preaching. In January, we start the new year with a new interim pastor, Rev. Michael McKillip. His job will be to guide us through this transition to a new called pastor to lead us, as well as to fulfill all pastoral duties that relate to Advent. And now, my friends, your challenge begins. During the next months, Pastor Michael and church council will be learning what it is that you, as Advent members, are looking for in a new pastor. We also need to decide in what direction to go to move the church forward into 2019 and beyond. A call committee will be formed in order to review candidates for the pastoral position. We hope every one will participate in these discussions. We want to maintain our church family while we grow to accommodate the future. I, for one, look forward to the new year and the challenge ahead. While part of me dislikes change, I try to see the chance to grow in new circumstances. It is a chance for each of us to pray diligently and contemplate what it is that we want out of our church experience, taking the time after prayer to listen for God’s answer. We are looking to you, our whole church family, to voice your needs and concerns about the future of Advent. The council, call committee and Pastor Michael will have a direction in order to secure the future of Advent and a new pastor to lead us. I know you are all up to the challenge! Happy and Blessed New Year to everyone in our Advent Family. To His Glory, Deacon Gail Oines

WELCOMING INTERIM PASTOR
MICHAEL McKILLIP ON JANUARY 6
Rev. Michael McKillip will serve as Advent’s interim pastor for one year, starting January 2019. Please join us on Sunday, January 6, on his first Sunday leading our worship services by greeting him during special receptions at 9:00 am and 10:30 am. Pastor Michael will be our interim pastor until we call a new permanent pastor and he will also be leading us during the calling period and pastoral transition. Pastor will be in the church office during the work week and will be available for all pastoral duties that we’ve been accustomed to. REGULAR SCHEDULE RESUMES ON

ADVENT’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS
We express our thanks to all who shared the spirit of Christmas in our church celebrations during the Advent Season: to those who decorated so beautifully; those who brought gifts for children through our Angel Tree Project; to worship leaders, actors and musicians for leading us to Jesus in worship and to all who participated in our services and activities.
ANGEL TREE PROJECT
Thank you for your support of the local Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Project. Your generosity enabled gifts to be distributed to 45 children. Thanks for making a local child’s Christmas a little brighter!
CHRISTMAS BRUNCH
Advent’s annual Christmas Brunch took place on December 9 after the 9:30 worship service. It was quite a success! Over 50 attendees shared fabulous food and fellowship. Live festive Christmas music was provided by Advent’s talented musicians, Michael Dettra, Ray Heiss, and Mike Sitler.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PAGEANT Many thanks to our talented students for sharing A
Christmas To Believe In with the congregation on December 16. The acting, music, costumes and scenery were the result of our students and staff bringing their talents together for this delightful production. We look forward to seeing everyone soon in Sunday school, and welcome new students to join us, from age 4 through grade 8!
CHRISTMAS EVE
We celebrated with beautiful music, candle lighting and a message from Rev. William Smith.
SPECIAL THANKS TO BOB & KAREN
