Hungerford were the better side in the blustery, tricky conditions at Fairfax Park and a goal by Mark Draycott early in the second half was enough to earn the points
which kept them in second place in the league.Hungerford had the better of the play in the fi rst half, but Nicholas
Ogbanufe shot straight at the goal keeper with a great chance and Luke Brewer had his shot blocked and his second effort defl ected away as the visitors threatened to take complete control, but half time came with the scores frustratingly level.
10 minutes into the second half, Ogbanufe broke away down the left and passed to Brewer inside the penalty area for his neat, square pass to set up Mark Draycott for the only goal of the game.
Bridgwater battled hard near the end and put Hungerford under some pressure, but the visitors were denied a penalty when Luke Hopper was fouled in the area and Hungerford had to be content with the narrow win.
Obituary: Robin TubbSt Lawrence’s Church, Hungerford was packed for the service
of thanksgiving for the life of Town Crier Robin Edwin Sidney Tubb on Thursday, January 19.
As The Vicar of Hungerford emphasised, Robin Tubb made his mark with his skill, love, example and teaching.
Tributes came from Robert James, trustee of the Town and Manor and former constable; leading citizen John Newton and former mayor and Adviser Citizen of The Century Jack Williams and Robin’s eldest son Gary.
Robert James said Robin had served Hungerford loyally as the 18th Bellman in 355 years and third member of his family to hold the post.
He set the highest standards for the important and ancient offi ce, always well dressed.
He was keeper of the town clock and until the clock was electrifi ed in 2000 he would climb the tower to wind it and did this some 3500 times.
A skilled metalworker and cabinet maker, he would produce parts to keep the clock ticking.
For 25 years he lectured in his skills at Newbury College. He was a Wolf Cub, senior Boy Scout and could play all
instruments in the town band. His presence at Hocktide was outstanding and many will
remember the sound of his horn which he crafted on the lines of the original horns.
A crowning glory was when he visited Halifax Nova Scotia for a town criers’ gathering. He successfully invited Robert James to accompany him. Having undergone a separatist dinner on his fi rst day, they were to attend an important luncheon for 300 the following day.
After a sleepless night worrying about the separatist bit, he asked Robert to join him in recognition of loyalty to The Queen at the luncheon. Grabbing a chair, he climbed on to it, rang his bell and brought the multitude to silence. Thereupon Robert toasted
The Queen and the Duke of Lancaster. All criers rang their bells and all attending drank the toast. So much for separatism in the eyes of Robin and Robert and it is interesting to note that not long afterwards a national vote was favourable to the monarchy.
John Newton said no one single person could have served the town more admirably.
With Robin’s skill as a craftsman, he had left the town many valuable items. “So long my friend; may you rest in peace”.
Jack Williams said he served on the John O’Gaunt school council as a governor with Robin whose heart was in Hungerford. The pair shared a love of cricket and enjoyed many cricket books.
Robin’s eldest son Garry in a touching address said his father fought illness all his 74 years of life. As church bells pealed and Hungerford Town Band played, Garry said “I’m so proud of my dad and thank you all for coming”.
Gary said his father use to say you only get out of life as much as you put in.
His father built his own house, loved his garden, enjoyed cooking and making jams, pickles and cakes. Above all, he enjoyed making things, the countryside and architecture.
He enjoyed helping people. He got up early and went to bed late.
A loving husband and father, he was all things and more that a dad should be.
It was fi tting that among the large congregation were The Queen’s representative, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mrs Adrian Scope, The mayor Cr Martin Crane, The Constable of the Town and Manor Mr Greg Furr and town criers including Owen Collier of Royal Wootton Bassett and Jim Pearman of Kidderminster.

27.1.12At Hungerford Rotary Club’s 25th Anniversary Din-ner, at the Elcot Park Hotel, Berkshire’s Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mrs. Sarah Scrope is seen presenting a Paul Harris Award to Hungerford Rotarian David Howard. The Paul Harris Fellowship is the highest International Award to be made within Rotary Worldwide and is only given for very exceptional community service making that person stand out from their peers. In David’s case he has served as a Magistrate for 28 years, fi rstly in Hungerford and Lambourn and then, when these courts closed, in Newbury. Initially he worked on the criminal side of the Magistrate’s Courts but later became a member of the family panel sitting on civil matters regarding domestic disputes and the care of children. He was a popular magistrate with his colleagues and court staff and known for his dry sense of humour! A magistrate’s work is unpaid and requires constant training to keep up with all the changes in the law all of which is very time consuming. In addition to his work in the local community he was a Founder Member of the Rotary Club of Hungerford, a Past President and has actively participated in the many Rotary fund raising activities for the benefi t of worthy causes locally, nationally and internationally. His con-tribution to Rotary and the community exemplifi es the ideals of Rotary and its motto “Service above Self” and makes him a worthy recipient of the International Paul Harris Fellowship award.

26th October 2011: Dr Hugh Pihlens – “From Latvia to Hungerford”Over a hundred members of the Hungerford Histori-cal Association were treated to an excellent talk by Dr Hugh Pihlens last Wednesday night. Dr Pihlens was a very popular and highly respected GP in Hungerford for all his professional life but his talk focused on his family links with Latvia. His grandfather had been a Latvian nationalist revo-lutionary in the early 20th century and had to escape in the hold of a German cargo ship from the Russian police and their bayonets. Eventually as a non-English speaking Protestant refugee he arrived in England and was befriended by a Church of England vicar and given employment and sanctuary by the vicar’s family. He met and married an English girl and they settled down in the West Country where Dr Pihlens was born. A wonderful story much appreciated by the audience, a lot of whom resolved to research their own family his-tory.The next talk will be given by The Countess of Car-narvon “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey” on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford. -Shelagh Parry
