If you’re a high school senior, peoplemay already be asking what you’ll do afteryou graduate. Will you pursue further edu-cation?Where? Howwill you pay for it? Allare questions that are easier to ask thananswer. With all the factors to consider, finding an answer that’s a good fit for yourequires research, self-reflection and, inmany cases, perseverance.Did you know that prospective college

students who visit at least three differ-ent campuses are more likely to enrollin college and to persist through gradua-tion than those who visit fewer than threeschools? There’s probably nothing magicabout the number three, but the extra ef-fort in exploring options makes a differ-ence.At the Louisiana Office of Student Finan-

cial Assistance, helping students selecta school that’s a good fit for them goes

hand-in-hand with looking at how to payfor it. At workshops and outreach eventsfor prospective college students held atschools throughout the state, LOSFA of-ficials suggest a five-point match to iden-tify major areas of concern to consider.Sujuan M. Williams Bouttée, LOSFA ex-ecutive director, and several other LOSFAofficials recently discussed some of thesteps involved. While your senior year is when you’ll

most likely put together your own plan forpost-secondary education, middle schoolisn’t too early to start preparing. As earlyas your first algebra class, you begin build-ing the GPA that can help or hinder yourcollege or scholarship applications. And,you’re also learning about your own skillsand interests. You may think you’re tooyoung to compile a resumé, but LOSFAofficials say gathering information aboutyour accomplishments while you’re inhigh school may help you write a convinc-ing college entrance essay for the school

of your choice. More importantly, it’s partof identifying your strengths and intereststhat can help guide your direction later. The Student Tuition Assistance and

Revenue Trust Savings Program offersfederal and state tax incentives for savingfor a college education. When parents orguardians open a START account while achild is young, even a small amount setaside monthly can make a big differencewhen it’s time to pay tuition.

Finding a matchHere are the five matches LOSFA sug-

gests prospective students consider:•Aptitude, Skills, Interest Match—This

one begins with self-reflection. What doyou enjoy doing? What do you do well?Your long-term goal is to identify potentialemployers who would pay you to do workyou enjoy. What credentials would enableyou to work in your chosen field? Whatschools offer programs that will give you

those credentials? One placeto learn about current job list-ings, typical salaries and skillsrequired is www.laworks.net/Stars/default.aspx.• Academic Match — Where

can you gain admission? Basedon your GPA and test scores, youmay assume that the schoolof your choice is a reach for you,but don’t be too hasty to rule itout.Gus Wales, LOSFA director of

public information and commu-nication, used his personal ex-perience as an example. He saidhe assumed LSU was too muchof a reach for him until he tookan advanced college placementclass at LSU. That resolved hisdoubts, and he later enrolled inLSU, now his alma mater.LOSFA officials said aiming

too low can backfire. A studentwho chooses a program thatisn’t challenging academicallymay find it hard to stay moti-vated.• Social and Emotional Match —

What type of environment willwork best for you? Some students find a large

university academically stimu-lating; others may find it intimi-dating and prefer a small schoolwith smaller classes. What areyour thoughts and feelingsabout living at home or on cam-pus?• Retention Match — Which

institution has the greatest suc-cess rate with retaining studentswith similar attributes to you?• Cost of Choice Match — All

other things being equal, whichoption allows you to completeyour degree with the leastamount of loan debt? Remem-

ber that there’s often more thanone route to the same goal, socompare your options.

Paying for educationThe average debt load for

those graduating from Louisi-ana colleges and universities in2013 was more than $22,000.Lingering student-loan debt hasbecome a national issue. The sooner you can pay off

your student loans, the sooneryour future earnings are avail-able to you.Scholarships, grants and find-

ing ways to control your costscan help you avoid borrowingmore than you actually need.Student loans have to be paidback even if, for some reason, you don’t graduate. While many Louisiana stu-

dents can benefit from TOPS,TOPS does not pay for everyexpense you’ll encounter.LOSFA officials said fees, such

as those associated with col-lege applications, orientation, dorm deposits and parking of-ten are overlooked in planningfor college costs. Make sure youunderstand what you’ll be re-quired to do to keep your TOPSscholarship.Deborah F. Paul, LOSFA schol-

arship/grant director, recom-mends that high school stu-dents meet with their schoolcounselors and also contactLOSFA to begin learning abouttheir options to pay for college.LOSFA’s mission is to promotecollege access, and by “college,”that means post-secondary pro-grams ranging from certificateprograms and two-year pro-grams as well as private andpublic universities. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all

way to keep costs down sinceindividual situations vary wide-ly. Often, a successful strategy

combines financing from vari-ous sources, including scholar-ships and savings. Cost-savingstrategies can include enrollingin advanced placement classeswhile in high school or living athome while attending college.Once you’ve decided what

school you want to attend,Paul recommends a visit to theschool’s admission and finan-cial aid offices. When you know what course

of study you want to take, lookfor scholarships and grants thatmay be specifically geared for

it. Paul suggests casting a widenet for scholarships and studygrants, not all of which arebased on ACT scores or GPAs.For example, some scholarshipstarget students entering nontra-ditional fields such as a womanwho wants to become an engi-neer. Other scholarships may beintended for children of parentsin certain industries or mem-bers of a specific organization.Even small scholarships mayhelp you buy textbooks.“Don’t leave money on the

table,” Paul said. Research may

reveal some sources of helpthat you might otherwise over-look. Paul said LOSFA can helpstudents find job-forecast infor-mation to help predict the likeli-hood of finding employment intheir chosen courses of study. Many financial aid programs

require a student to completea FAFSA, or Free Application forFederal Student Aid. Studentscan only do this their senioryear, but before then, it is pos-sible to do a practice version tohelp you project where you’llstand.
