Broadband brings fibre to the foreGiven its ability to handle even the most bandwidth-intensive applications, businesses and communities worldwide are increasingly realising that fibre optic cabling is the smart choice when it comes to accessing current and future broadband applications. However, many of these potential customers are located in areas where the installation of fibre in the ground is either prohibitively expensive or simply impossible: for example, intensively built-up areas or water saturated areas, or mountainous regions.

Does this mean that these customers are to be denied the numerous benefits of fibre? Not at all.

Emtelle brings fibre to allAs well as producing the world’s most relied-upon in-ground blown fibre solutions, Emtelle also provides an aerial solution based on its renowned technology and products. Modern advances in fibre cable design and installation practices have revolutionized blown fibre aerial installation, producing impressive practical, technical and economic benefits without the need for digging. As a result, aerial installation is becoming recognized as a quick and cost-effective alternative, especially in cases where an existing aerial infrastructure (for example, phone lines or electrical cables) is already in place.

Emtelle’s aerial blown fibre solution is ideal for a wide range of customers, including municipalities, housing developers, utility companies, network operators, cable TV operators, universities, hospitals.

Among the many possible applications that the use of fibre facilitates are video-on-demand, high-definition TV, gaming, home security, telecommuting, music and movie downloads, home education, video conferencing and sophisticated telephony capabilities. The market for these services is massive and growing more massive by the year. For many of these potential consumers, physical obstacles are all that prevent them from obtaining fibre-based broadband access. Emtelle’s aerial blown fibre solution is designed to overcome such obstacles.

High overhead performance, low overhead costsWith in-ground and aerial installations, the principles are much the same. A core infra-structure is installed. Fibre products can then be blown in a continuous installation without the need for splicing or intermediate connections. Compared to traditional fibre installation methods, the air blown method requires much less time and can be performed by far fewer people. In addition, the fibre can be blown in precisely in accordance with the user’s wishes and requirements. This ensures that initial investment in the network is minimized, and that it increases only when revenue generation possibilities emerge.

Benefits of FttH Aerial solution• Eliminates the need for repeated digging• Accelerates turnaround times• Optimises network flexibility • Ensures greater freedom in network planning and design• Requires investment only when justified by potential returns• Facilitates the use of fibre in problematic terrains• Offers simple, quick network modification, maintenance and expansion• Provides one source for all products and accessories and

services• Comprises an integrated, immediately compatible product range• Low installation cost if poles are already in place.• Tube assemblies are small in diameter and have low visual impact.• Fast point to point installation using pre-term fibre bundles• Pay as you grow. PON systems can be upgraded to P2P as the fibre

pathway is already in existence• Span lengths of 70m and 100m

If fibre needs to be added, removed, replaced or re-routed, it is simply blown in (or blown out, in the case of old fibre) from a ground-based blowpoint. This creates substantial benefits in terms of costs and turnaround times, as well as creating much greater flexibility in the area of network planning and design. Instead of having a network that grows in fits and starts, often at great expense and disruption, you have one that evolves smoothly, dynamically, more cost-efficiently and with minimum disruption.

Designed for easy maintenance and harsh conditionsEmtelle’s aerial solution deploys a simple yet robust figure-8 design that keeps the strength member and the tube bundle separate. The cable sheath materials are flexible and low-weight, allowing for greater ease in installation and maintenance. In addition, to ensure durability in prolonged outdoor use, they are highly UV-resistant. Both metal strength member and metal-free (all-dielectric) versions are available, subject to span length and loading conditions. Emtelle also manufactures an over-head metal-free product with added resistance to electrical arc-tracking, allowing

deployment close to power cables.

The strength members in standard figure-8 cable designs are made from steel. If needed, higher-tensile versions are available, typically for longer spans. The aerial drop tube constructions also support their own weight, but can also be lashed, if required. Strength members are located under the sheath to support rated tensile loads and overloads.

Aerial solution – strong to the last dropFor the aerial method, the Tube Distribution Closure used for in-ground applications is replaced by the Aerial

Branch Closure, which serves exactly the same function. The closure is configured specifically for the figure-8 design, and offers easy closing and re-opening. The closure is compact and lightweight and perfectly suited for suspension from overhead spans.

The single drop tube (which goes to the consumer’s lead-in point) is of the self-supporting type, and needs no messenger wire. Drops can be supplied to match both 5/3.5mm tubes and 3/2.1mm tubes in main Figure-8. Located on the cable near to a pole, the closure is supported by the strength member. A new manifold-style closure can be pole-mounted . The standard Emtelle single drops exit the closure and are tensioned from the same adjacent pole. They are very compact, circular and light-weight. As a result, they can be strung with minimal sag yet low tension. Each drop contains tiny steel strength members, brass-protected for long life. The drops have been constructed with excellent strength characteristics to compliment the figure-8 designs.

End-to-end integration and instant compatibilityEmtelle’s aerial blown fibre solution can also be combined with in-ground installations. For example, Direct Bury could be used up to street corners, from where poles could be used to carry the fibre to individual houses over streets and gardens. With , all the components involved such an arrangement are inter-connectable, which significantly simplifies and accelerates the procedure, and ensures a well-integrated network operating at maximum efficiency and reliability.

Comprehensive, high-performance blown fibre solutionsEmtelle has been involved in numerous FttH blown fibre projects around the world. As well as providing the necessary products and accessories, we also offer incomparable expertise in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of blown fibre networks. If you need an aerial infrastructure, we can come to you right from the start and ensure that the network is optimally designed, installed and operated. We put all our expertise at the disposal of our customers, and respond rapidly to calls for service, help and advice.

TrainingEmtelle’s training courses in Installation & Maintenance and Design & Engineering are renowned for providing installers and technicians with the expertise they need to get the most out of technology now and in the years to come.

Quick and easy installationAerial cables are subject to the most severe environmental conditions including wind, ice, snow and large temperature changes so

the cables have been designed to be rugged to meet these demands. From an installation point of view, Emtelle’s aerial blown fibre system has also been designed to be easy to install. The tube assemblies are small, lightweight and can be handled easily. Mounting hardware and cable supporting fittings are simple and require few tools allowing for a quick and easy installation. When a customer requires fibre, a drop is connected using push fit connectors and the fibre is then blown to the customer, ideal when the take rate is low in the initial phase of a project and the customer's most cost effective solution from day one. For customers requiring fibre pathways to run alongside existing power lines, dielectric tracking-resistant versions are available.
