The AFS Press April 2011 The Official Student Newspaper of the American Farm School Μπράβο, Βάσω!!! Στην µαθήτρια της Σχολής Βάσω Τσιµπούκα απονεµήθηκε το 1ο βραβείο ποίησης από την Ένωση Συγγραφέων - Λογοτεχνών Ευρώπης. Χάρη στη βράβευση τρία ποιήµατά της θα συµπεριληφθούν στην Ανθολογία Νέων Ελλήνων Ποιητών 2011.

Putting  the  “American”  in  AFS  During  the  first  semester  at  AFS,  the  American  interns  organized  some  special  events  to  introduce  students  to  American  culture.    

   

 Carrie  organized  a  morning  of  making  peanut  butter  and  jelly  sandwiches,  the  most  typical  and  beloved  American  sandwich.  Many  students  enjoyed  tasting  peanut  butter  for  the  first  time!  Carrie  also  led  a  Christmas-­‐card  making  activity,  which  included  Christmas  music  and  hot  chocolate.    The  interns  have  also  showed  students  several  American  movies  such  as  Good  Will  Hunting,  Ocean’s  Twelve  and  My  Big  Fat  Greek  Wedding.  Micah  and  Carrie  are  enjoying  their  weekend  homestays  with  AFS  families  and  look  forward  to  the  rest  of  their  time  here!  

AFS Students Travel to Paris This winter, AFS students Olga Tialiou and Delitskos Thodoris, along with graduate Zac Iliadis and one teacher and one parent, went to Paris. Our main purpose there was to take part in the wine tasting contest and animal marking contest in the French version of "Zootechnica." Each student who participated won 180 Euros! Thodoris and Olga took the 10th and 30th places for the animal marking contest out of 38 participants. Zac finished in 17th place out of 39 participants in the wine contest. But it's our participation that matters most! We also had the chance to see sights like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Seine River and more. We went shopping and on the second day the participants from all different countries gathered together for dinner. It was a strange meal because each person had to bring foods from his home country! The tsipouro we brought from AFS disappeared in five minutes. We had a great time and I recommend the program to anyone else who has the chance to go! - Olga Tialiou

Micah  led  a  group  of  creative,  enthusiastic  students  in  making  handmade  “tie-­‐dye”  shirts,  made  by  dyeing  white  shirts  with  your  own  colors  and  patterns.  Tie-­‐dye  is  a  popular  style  in  the  U.S.

Environmental  Club  Visits    Axios  River  Delta    A  couple  months  ago,  the  AFS  Environmental  Club  went  on  a  field  trip  to  the  River  Axios’  Delta.  Everyone  had  to  get  up  really  early  on  a  Sunday  morning  and  have  a  good  breakfast,  because  the  birds  are  best  seen  during  the  early  morning  hours.  Similar  to  the  expression  “The  early  bird  catches  the  worm,”  in  this  case,  the  early  student  catches  the  bird!        The  trip  started  with  a  visit  to  a  little  museum  owned  by  a  group  that  was  managing  the  delta,  preserving  its  wildlife  and  protecting  its  habitat.  After  a  short,  informative  speech  we  headed  to  Loudias,  a  nearby  river,  to  begin  bird  watching.  Although  the  place  was  full  of  garbage  and  all  sorts  of  waste,  it  was  equally  teeming  with  wildlife.      

   You  could  see  birds  everywhere:  flamingos,  pelicans,  wild  ducks,  sea  eagles,  swans  and  grebes.  Our  tour  guide  provided  us  with  binoculars  so  we  could  see  the  birds  better.  We  even  managed  to  capture  some  amazing  photos  using  phones,  cameras  and  even  a  mobile  phone  combined  with  binoculars!  In  the  end,  the  trip  was  a  success  and  I  believe  all  of  us  learned  something  that  day  and  became  more  sensitive  about  the  world  that  surrounds  us.  -­‐  Antony  Tsiakmakis  

A Ski Trip to Remember

A few weeks ago, twenty students went on a snowboard and ski trip to 3-5 Pigadia. The trip was organized by Mr.Kasapidis and the children of the school. We woke up early on Sunday and we ate breakfast. We went to the bus and started the trip. The drive was perfect because we sang songs and we passed very beautiful scenery. When at last we reached the mountain, we felt that it was very cold. However, the snow was perfect; everything was white and frozen. We put on our skis and snowboards and we rolled down. It was wonderful! Although we fell down a lot, it was terribly funny. We sometimes failed to stand on our snow boards, but we did not stop trying and helping each other. The greatest difficulty was to ascend the chairlift. The impressions of all the children who went on the trip were quite positive. It was something new for us, something very interesting and exciting, full of fun and adventure. The hours passed without us even realizing it, drinking hot chocolate in the cafeteria and skiing on the slopes. When it came time to go, we all felt sad. For some of us it was the first time we had taken such a trip with the school, and for others it was the last trip before graduation. The homecoming was pretty quiet; most of us slept until the end of the journey listening to songs. Finally, we went to dinner. I hope it was a memorable day for all, and that this trip will remain in our thoughts and in our hearts! - Fotoula Papandreou

Οι µαθητές της ΑΓΣ χορεύουν «παραδοσιακά»

Την Κυριακή 8 Μαίου 2011, η ΑΓΣ, στα πλαίσια του προγράµµατος των εξωσχολικών δραστηριοτήτων θα οργανώσει τη 2η Συνάντηση Σχολικών Οµίλων /Συλλόγων Ελληνικών Παραδοσιακών Χορών στην πλατεία Μοσκαχλαίδη, στην ΑΓΣ . Η Συνάντηση αυτή είναι ενταγµένη στα πλαίσια της εκδήλωσης «Μέρα Μαγιού», η οποία θα είναι µια µεγάλη γιορτή για το Σχολείο µας µε την παρουσία 5000 ατόµων που θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να επισκεφθούν τους χώρους µας, να ενηµερωθούν για τα προγράµµατά µας και να παρακολουθήσουν παράλληλες εκδηλώσεις µε χορευτικά συγκροτήµατα, ορχήστρες και πολλές εκπλήξεις. Θα σας περιµένουµε όλους να έρθετε µε την οικογένεια ή τους φίλους σας για να περάσουµε καλά και να χειροκροτήσουµε τα παιδιά µας που θα δώσουν τον καλύτερο τους εαυτό.

The  Newest  Club  at  AFS:  Italian  Club  Buon  giorno  amici,  Our  teachers,  Carrie  Rosenblum  from  Connecticut,  USA  and  Nazli  Gurkas  from  Turkey  have  taken  on  the  teaching  of  the  Italian  language.  The  class  consists  of  seven  students  who  have  chosen  to  devote  some  of  their  free  time  every  Sunday  night.  In  this  class,  we  learn  many  things  about  Italy  and  the  Italian  language.    We  do  not  only  learn  rules,  but  we  have  the  chance  to  see  sights  and  monuments  of  Italy  through  pictures,  listen  to  Italian  music,  taste  Italian  foods  and  many  other  interesting  things.    -­‐  Vladimiros  Topalidis  &  Diamantis  Kandilas    

American  Jazz  Group  Performs  at  AFS  

Στις 28 Mαρτίου κλήθηκαν όλα τα παιδιά που δήλωσαν για το Κολέγιο “Perrotis” να παρακολουθήσουν µια Jazz µπάντα από την Αµερική. Ένα από αυτά τα παιδιά ήµουν κι εγώ,κι έτσι αποφάσισα να γράψω γι’αυτή την µοναδική εµπειρία στην σχολική εφηµερίδα. Για µένα ήταν κάτι πρωτόγνωρο, δεν είχε τύχει ξανά να παρακολουθήσω τέτοιου είδους µουσική ζωντανά. Οφείλω να οµολογήσω πως ενθουσιάστηκα από την οµαδικότητα που χαρακτήριζε την µπάντα, από τα τραγούδια που παίχτηκαν κι απ’τον τρόπο που ο ταλαντούχος κ. Mike Davison διηύθυνε την ορχήστρα και γινόταν ένα µε το ακροατήριο! Επιπλέον, κάτι ακόµα που θα έχω να θυµάµαι από εκείνη την ξεχωριστή βραδιά είναι ο χορός που έκανα µε την κ. Άννα Καλίντσεβα (η oποία ήταν άψογη!), και που κι εκείνη µε την σειρά της χόρεψε µε τον κ. Αθανάσιο Κασαπίδη και ο χορός τους φάνταζε επαγγελµατιών! Οι αναµνήσεις που έχω είναι υπέροχες και στην πρώτη ευκαιρία θα παρακολουθούσα ξανά κάτι ανάλογο. Προτείνω ανεπιφύλαχτα σε όλους σας να παρακολουθήσετε µια τέτοια συναυλία , δεν θα το µετανιώσετε. - Stelios Politikos

Boys’ Soccer Team Captures Victory at German School Tournament

The sports tournament at the German School in January was so exciting and fun for all AFS athletes and fans. AFS fans made a lot of noise at the German School to push athletes to win every game. One highlight of the tournament was the victory cup being won by the boys’ soccer team. In other sports we didn't have many wins, but we played with passion in all matches. To sum up, AFS students worked hard, gave a lot of effort and had a great time at the tournament. - Michael Oustoglou & Antonis Papadopoulos

Ένα ξεχωριστό αθλητικό γεγονός έλαβε χώρα στην Σχολή µας απ’ την Παρασκευή 18 έως την Κυριακή 20 του Μάρτη. Τα σχολεία που συµµετείχαν ήταν: Η Γερµανική Σχολή, το Κολλέγιο Ανατόλια, το Pinewood, τα Εκπαιδευτήρια Μαντουλίδη και φυσικά η Αµερικανική Γεωργική Σχολή. Τα αθλήµατα στα οποία συµµετείχαν τα παραπάνω σχολεία ήταν το µπάσκετ(αγοριών) και το ποδόσφαιρο(αγοριών και κοριτσιών). Επίσης πραγµατοποιήθηκε ένας φιλικός αγώνας βόλεϊ κοριτσιών, ανάµεσα στην Αµερικάνικη Γεωργική Σχολή και στη Γερµανική Σχολή.

AFS SPORTS TOURNAMENT

The  tournament  was  kicked  off  with  an  American-­‐style  “pep  rally”  on  Thursday  night.  The  evening  of  games  and  fun  competition  concluded  with  the  highly-­‐anticipated  pizza-­‐eating  contest.

A New Beginning

Two years ago, my best friend Mary called and told me that her house had been destroyed by a hurricane. She cried for hours and I tried to calm her down. She and her parents were really disappointed. They had lost their home and they didn’t know what to do. They were especially worried about the youngest member of the family, Mary’s sister, who was two years younger than she. While Mary was talking to me, I was thinking about something helpful we could do for them. I hung up the phone and ran to my parents. I told them what had happened and they offered to help Mary’s family. My father immediately called some of his friends and together with their families, they volunteered to build Mary’s house again. I called Mary and told her the good news. She was really happy when she heard it. Starting the next day and for three weeks, we worked all together to rebuild the house. While we were building, Mary’s family lived in my house.This was a small present for my best friend. I was so happy that I could do something to help her. Now they have this house and a safe place to live! - Zefi Kalinderi

Diary

Sometimes when I feel lost because something bad has happened to me, only one thing can make me feel better...here in Halkidiki we have a lot of beautiful beaches, but none of them can compare to my village’s beach. The reason is we have a really big stone where I go when I want to relax and forget all my problems. Also, when I climb onto this stone I always feed the seagulls, which is something I love to do. For me, this stone is the most lovely place. I have been going there since I was five years old. When I am on this stone, I can feel the wind and smell the sea. I also have an amazing view, so the best time to go there is at sunset. Maybe for others this stone is just a big stone on the beach, but for me it is something more. I could never think of a better place to go when I need to relax. - Katerina Didaskalou

Οδηγός επιτυχίας στις εξετάσεις

Οι εξετάσεις αποτελούν, αναµφίβολα, µια στρεσογόνο διαδικασία. Ιδιαίτερα σε περιπτώσεις, όπου τα αποτελέσµατα των εξετάσεων κρίνονται µεγάλης σηµασίας για τη ζωή µας, οι σκέψεις γύρω από την επιτυχία και την αποτυχία είναι συνεχείς και έντονες. Συχνά, δηµιουργείται ένας φαύλος κύκλος άγχους και αρνητικών σκέψεων, σε σηµείο που µπορεί να µας ακινητοποιήσει και να εγκαταλείψουµε την προσπάθειά µας. Από την άλλη πλευρά, υπάρχει και το λεγόµενο «δηµιουργικό» άγχος που θεωρείται ιδιαίτερα ωφέλιµο, καθώς µας κινητοποιεί, ώστε να συγκεντρωθούµε καλά και να είµαστε σε εγρήγορση. Πώς µπορούµε, λοιπόν, να βοηθήσουµε τον εαυτό µας σε συνθήκες άγχους, όπως είναι αυτές των εξετάσεων, και να διασφαλίσουµε την επιτυχία µας; Ακολουθούν πρακτικά βήµατα προς εξεταζόµενους: Πριν τις εξετάσεις • Οργάνωσε το χώρο και το χρόνο της

µελέτης σου. Είναι σηµαντικό να ελέγξεις οτιδήποτε διασπά την προσοχή σου και να φροντίσεις προς όφελος της συγκέντρωσής σου, έτσι ώστε να έχεις τον απαραίτητο χρόνο. • Φτιάξε ένα πρόγραµµα µελέτης. Δώσε προσοχή στα ακόλουθα σηµεία: Όσο περισσότερες λεπτοµέρειες περιέχει η

ύλη, τόσο πιο πολλές επαναλήψεις είναι απαραίτητες.

Είναι καλό να προετοιµάζεσαι για τις εξετάσεις, δηµιουργώντας από πριν ένα µακροπρόθεσµο πλάνο.

Μην αφήνεις την επανάληψη για την τελευταία στιγµή.

Στον προγραµµατισµό πρέπει να προβλέπονται διαλείµµατα, ανάλογα µε το χρόνο που διαθέτεις.

• Φρόντισε τον ύπνο και τη διατροφή σου.

• Σκέψου θετικά για τις εξετάσεις. Θα σε βοηθήσουν περισσότερο σκέψεις, όπως «θα κάνω ό,τι καλύτερο µπορώ και όλα θα πάνε καλά», παρά σκέψεις, όπως «δεν προχωράω καθόλου µε το διάβασµα, είναι δύσκολα και θα τα παρατήσω».

Είναι σηµαντικό, όταν κάνεις αρνητικές σκέψεις, να ελέγχεις την ορθότητά τους. Αυτό µπορείς να το πετύχεις, απαντώντας στις παρακάτω απλές ερωτήσεις: Τι αποδείξεις έχω για τις σκέψεις που κάνω; Θα µπορούσαν να υπάρχουν άλλες εναλλακτικές εξηγήσεις και λύσεις στο πρόβληµά µου; Πώς µε βοηθάει το να σκέφτοµαι έτσι; Ποιές θα µπορούσαν να είναι οι συνέπειες, αν άλλαζα τον τρόπο που σκέφτοµαι;

Κατά τη διάρκεια των εξετάσεων • Πάρε βαθιές και ήρεµες αναπνοές και συνδύασε τες µε θετικές και ρεαλιστικές σκέψεις, όπως: «ακόµα κι αν αγχωθώ, θα το αντιµετωπίσω». • Διάβασε προσεκτικά τις ερωτήσεις και οργάνωσε το χρόνο σου. • Χρησιµοποίησε πρόχειρο για να οργανώσεις τις σκέψεις σου. • Ξεκίνα µε τα θέµατα που γνωρίζεις καλύτερα. • Αν κολλήσεις σε µια ερώτηση, προχώρησε στην επόµενη. • Μόλις νιώσεις τα πρώτα σηµάδια πανικού, επανέλαβε µια λέξη ή φράση που σε ηρεµεί (π.χ. «ήρεµα», «θα τα καταφέρω»). • Μη βιαστείς να παραδώσεις το γραπτό σου. Άφησε χρόνο για να ξαναδιαβάσεις τις απαντήσεις σου.

Τέλος, είναι καλό να θυµάσαι:

Η ζωή συνεχίζεται και µετά τις εξετάσεις. Θα υπάρξουν πολλές ευκαιρίες για να δοκιµαστείς και να πετύχεις στους µελλοντικούς σου στόχους.

EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE The  Value  of  Trees  

In  an  ecosystem,  every  element  has  a  very  specific  and  definite  role.  The  primary  role  of  trees  is  the  capture  of  solar  energy  by  photosynthesis.  Every  tree  functions  as  an  energy  center  that  is  connected  to  the  sun  and  is  the  source  of  every  biological  process.  Solar  energy,  water  and  minerals  feed  the  trees,  and  the  trees  feed  the  herbivores.  Some  of  the  other  functions  that  trees  have  are:  1.  They  remove  carbon  dioxide  from  the  air,  producing  oxygen  with  their  leaves.  2.  They  influence  the  temperature  and  the  humidity  of  the  atmosphere.  3.  They  protect  the  soil  from  erosion  and  fertilize  it  with  nutritious  substances.  4.  They  contribute  to  cleansing  the  water  of  the  subsoil.  5.  They  constitute  a  refuge  for  many  species  of  animals. -­‐  Anastasia  Stai  &  the  Environmental  Club  

The Golden Ratio Have you ever wondered about the relationship between:

• Leonardo DaVinci and Phidias? • The Nautilus Shell and the Fibonacci

sequence? • The Pentagram and the sunflower, the

Parthenon or the human body?

The answer to all of the above is the same, and it is

called Phi ( ) ,which is an irrational

number approximately equal to 1.618. No matter how outrageous it sounds, Phi appears almost everywhere around us! The Phi Number (φ), also known as the “golden ratio” or “the divine proportion” creates shapes and analogies that are most pleasing to the eye. Every scientific field has detected Phi in the most unthinkable places on Earth. For example, if we divide the number of female bees with the male ones in every hive in the world, we get this number. Even if we divide the numbers of petals in a flower with the number of its sepals or the length of one coil of a nautilus shell with the next one, the result is…1.618! The person who investigated the existence of this exceptional proportion between elements is Leonardo DaVinci, who saw this number emerging from the relationships between the length from our head to the ground and from our belly button to the ground.

Phi also appears in arts (sculpturing, architecture etc.). More specifically, architects know that the only proportion that gives the sense of perfection is that of the golden ratio. It is also worth mentioning that in works of significant artistic value like the Parthenon, The Pyramids of Egypt and even the 5th Symphony by Beethoven, we can detect the existence of the number φ.

However, the most impressive and unimaginable connection, which left linguists and readers speechless, is the one that relates Phi to the Greek language. According to many studies, is has been proven that every Greek word either gives off or contains a number. The Ancient Greek Philosophers took the combination of numbers contained in the names of their Gods into great consideration. So for instance, if we divide the sum of the numbers that correspond to the word Απόλλων (Apollo=1061) with the one in the word Άρτεµις (Artemis=656), we get φ.Also, the great saying by the Delphic Oracle «µηδέν άγαν» which means “nothing excessive” corresponds to the numbers 162 or approximately 100φ. Γαστρονοµία: µέσο σύνδεσης ή διαφοροποίησης

Κάθε λαός έχει τα δικά του γαστρονοµικά στοιχειά τα όποια είναι συγχρόνως και µέρος της πολιτιστικής του κληρονοµίας. Όπως ένα αρχαίο εύρηµα θυµίζει στο λαό του την πολιτιστική του ταυτότητα έτσι και µια συνταγή από τις πιο απλές µέχρι τις πιο σύνθετες µπορεί να επισηµάνει την προέλευση του καθενός και να τον κάνει ξεχωριστό. Η γαστρονοµία όσο διαφοροποιεί τους λαούς τόσο τους ενώνει. Από την εποχή των θαλασσοπόρων συναντάµε ανταλλαγή γαστρονοµικών στοιχείων µεταξύ των λαών. Οι λαοί έπαιρναν και έδιναν στοιχειά ο ένας στον άλλον. Έτσι µπορούµε να συναντήσουµε σήµερα πολλά κοινά υλικά και µεθόδους παρασκευής φαγητών ανάµεσα στους λαούς. Ωστόσο πολλές φορές χωρίς να υπάρχει επικοινωνία µεταξύ δυο πολιτισµών µπορούν να έχουν κοινά στοιχειά είτε γιατί οι άνθρωποι ’θελαν να κάνουν αλλαγές επειδή δεν τους αρέσουν κάποια υλικά , είτε γιατί θελαν να πειραµατιστούν σε νέες γεύσεις. -­‐  Dimitris  Passalidis
