Celebrating Audrey Delafield

On Sunday, May 19th all of at St. Alban’s will gather and give joyful thanks for the first 25 years of ministry of the Venerable Audrey Delafield, our devoted and much-loved archdeacon. Don’t worry! Audrey is not retiring or even slowing down, but we couldn’t let such a milestone pass without shouting our thanks to God and Audrey right out loud!

May 19th is Pentecost, a festive day for the church. So we can all be together for Audrey’s celebration, we will hold one big worship service at 9:30 a.m. followed by a special coffee hour. No presents, please; your presence is all that Audrey asks. We will take a collection for the Essentials Pantry–one of Audrey’s most treasured commitments—and a new tree will grace the garden in her honor.

I have honestly never met a deacon (or priest or bishop) who is more closely attuned to her flock. Explaining the vocation of deacon, Audrey once wrote that she is a “perpetual deacon.” She said this to distinguish her ongoing diaconate from the transitional ones all priests serve, but I think the word perpetual is just right because there is a constancy and enduring character about her. There is a reliability and clarity of purpose we all can appreciate and model. Audrey shares a confidence that we will know God’s grace in our lives. Celebrating Friendship

Spring in Maine is a season well-suited for friendship, and in the next few weeks we at St. Alban’s are going to be celebrating friendships in all sorts of ways. We are going to be not just our normal friendly place, but a place where we invite and make and nurture friends.

Jesus calls us to be friends. Friends walk with one another; they gladden each other’s hearts. Friends share each other’s stuff…the good things and the not so good.

In May a longtime friend of ours, Audrey Delafield, will celebrate a special milestone, 25 years of ordained ministry. I like to say it’s the first 25 years of an amazing ministry. Audrey is a true friend. She walks the way with us. She stands up and stands in for us. So we’re going to stand up for her and sing and clap and thank God that she is our friend. The ministry of friendship is discovering Christ in our midst.

Another big friendship is also going to be featured in our St. Alban’s life this spring. The Rev. Dr. Frank Wade is an old friend of mine…and I know he will become a friend of yours as well. Frank is one of the most gifted Episcopal preachers. He is going to preach for us on June 9th in one service at 9:00 a.m. Frank is also a great teacher, he is going to lead us in two stimulating conversations on The Art of Believing. Frank knows that belief does not just happen, that together we relish and rely upon the art of belief…an idea he’s going to share, as only a friend can.

C.S. Lewis said, “Friendship, is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, it has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” St. Alban’s is a place for friends who give great value to survival, to life itself. Our friends, like Audrey and Frank, bring out our missing parts. They see things in us that we don’t see. They remind us that the mystery of Christ is bigger than any one of us.

THE ALBANOR

Come as You Are to the Garden!

Starting Sunday, June 2nd - 5:30 p.m. worship in the Memorial Garden

St. Alban’s relaxed evening service of Communion and Song with prayers and a homily will soon move outdoors into the inviting fresh air of the Memorial Garden. We enjoy one of the most appealing and well-designed outdoor worship spaces of any Maine church, and it’s simply a privilege to gather there for our casual and contemplative evening service. Please plan to try this worship time and remember…

This is a service that newcomers may well enjoy, so bring a friend!

Smaller Services

In addition to our well attended Sunday morning services, St. Alban’s offers a variety of more intimate worship opportunities. If you seek a quieter, less formal setting for

prayer and spiritual growth, please know you are welcome!

Centering Prayer Every Wednesday at 8:15 a.m.

Centering prayer facilitates the opening of our whole being to God’s presence. The centering prayer group meets in the upstairs youth lounge every Wednesday morning at 8:15 a.m. All are invited and welcome to share in this quiet time of contemplative prayer. If you have questions or would like to learn more, please feel free to contact Richard Berman [email protected].

Wednesday Morning Communion Every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.

This short, 30-minute service includes lessons, Communion and a brief reflection. The service is held in the parish hall annex.

Compline

May 19th at 9:00 p.m.

Compline is a brief late evening service of prayer from deep in our Christian heritage. Many find it to be a quiet and refreshing end to the day. Consider joining us in the candle-lit sanctuary at 9:00 p.m. Perhaps Compline at St. Alban’s will become for you a meaningful moment in your busy week - a quiet, contemplative, hopeful time for prayer, blessing and reflection.

After May, Compline will resume in the fall. Watch for it in the Homecoming Albanor.

From the Organ Bench

by James Strand, Organist/Choirmaster - Handbell Director

Hymns are a particular passion of mine - I love singing and playing them. It is often enlightening to find out more about the text and about the music. That is why hymns are a frequent subject of my Albanor articles.

On May 19th, Pentecost Sunday, the choir anthem will be Come Down, O Love Divine. This text can be found as a hymn in the Hymnal 1982 (no. 516), set to a tune by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

The anthem uses music by William H. Harris, an English organist (1883-1973). As a young boy he was a chorister at Holy Trinity, London. When he was 14, he became Assistant Organist at St. David's Cathedral in Wales. Throughout his life he was organist at several churches in England, with his last at St. George's Chapel, Windsor. That is where he wrote many anthems and organ compositions, and was conductor at both the 1937 and 1953 coronations. Much of his music is still performed regularly. This anthem is a favorite of our choir.

The text was written by Bianco da Siena, who lived in Venice, where he wrote ninety-two hymns during the early 1400s. Four centuries later (1867), an English priest, Richard Littedale, discovered da Sienna's hymns, translated a number of them into English, and included them in a hymnal entitled The People's Hymnal.

This hymn is a prayer - an impassioned plea for God to come down from heaven to reside in our hearts and set our hearts afire with a holy flame. It prays that God will shine a glorious light to illumine our pathway. It hopes for hearts full of yearning for God's grace - something that can happen only when love creates a place for the Holy Spirit to dwell within our hearts. On behalf of the entire choir, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

(Hymn information by Richard Niell Donovan)

Teacher Appreciation Day

Sunday, June 9th

As we all know, our teachers are the very heart and soul of our wonderful children’s programs, Godly Play and Our PLACE. This year, more than 35 parishioners happily volunteered to share their time and talent with the children of the parish. Whether teaching in one of the classrooms on Sunday morning; helping with the puppet show and the Christmas Pageant; baking bread on Maundy Thursday; or putting needle and thread to the Alleluia Banner, these dedicated souls showed by example their love and faith. My sincere gratitude and thanks go to:

Jane Anderson, Bruce Babcock, Julia Beckett, Beth Calloway, Peter Cary, Sarah Choi, Carol Dean, Joe Delafield, Jim Fisher, Lisa Fisher, Pete Frankwicz, Bruce & Hannah Goodwin, Kirsten Helfrich, Erin O’Connor Jones, Grace Kimball, Joanne Lee, Chip & Laura Leighton, Anne Leonardi, Julie Linnell, Laura McGrath, Julie Merriam, Peter Merril, Katie Michael, Nina Morris, Gwen Moore, Melinda Nudd, Joanne Olsen, Stacy Parady, Joan Phillips, Scott Read, Nancy Richardson, Jayne Rudberg, Jen Tarling, Liz Tully, Marjorie Manning Vaughn and Michelle Whitney.

Save the Date for

July’s VBS!

July 8th to 12th

We’ll again host a Vacation Bible School this summer, and in keeping with tradition, it’ll be a terrific week! “God’s Backyard Bible Camp” by Standard Publishing is centered around service – to family, friends, neighbors, and community. Each day begins at Backyard Bash featuring large-group music and fun, where kids will be introduced to a Bible story and how it is relevant to our lives today. Then, after they experience the other activities of the day, the kids gather back to Backyard Bash to review, encourage, and get motivated to serve others.

The other activities include Backyard Bible Club, where kids will explore the Bible story in a variety of interactive ways; Backyard Food & Fun, where kids have the opportunity to play, have fun, and enjoy a healthy snack; Clothesline Creations, where kids create service-oriented crafts; and Community Corner, where we’ll hear stories about community servants and be motivated to get involved. All these fun activities connect to the day’s Bible story and the life focus of serving others.

The camp will meet on Monday-Friday, July 8-12, from 9:00 am – noon right here at St. Alban’s. All children ages 4 years – rising 4th grade are welcome; the cost is $40 per child. On-site nursery care for younger siblings (ages 1-3) is available for a small fee. Contact Debbie at 799-4014 or [email protected] for more information.

Spring Senior Residence Services

St. Alban’s continues to offer monthly services at several senior residences in Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Scarborough. We have a faithful congregation of people at all of these residences, many of whom are no longer able to attend church. They very much appreciate having a church service brought to them. The services include Scripture readings, hymns, a sermon, prayers and a Eucharist.

Parishioners of St. Alban’s are warmly invited to attend any of the services listed below, and may find they take a great deal away from them! If you have questions or need directions to any of these services,

please call Anita Samuelsen at 767-2894 or email her at [email protected].

Raising Spiritual Kids in a Secular

World Meeting

May 22nd

Please join the Rev. Kelly Moughty and Debbie Fisher on Wednesday, May 22nd from 7:00-8:30 pm in Bonoff Hall for the second meeting on this important topic. We will continue our discussion on ways we can expand our children’s spiritual growth … on Sunday mornings and beyond.

Using the newly-published book “How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity & the Hidden Power of Character” by Paul Tough as a guide, we’ll explore the concept of resiliency, and how qualities such as perseverance, optimism and faith truly define the meaning of success. We’ll allow time for parent input, discuss the possibility of the formation of a parents’ support group, and look for additional ways St. Alban’s can partner with parents to do the hardest job there is – to raise spiritual kids in this secular world of ours.

The Art of Believing

A St. Alban’s Conversation with the Rev. Dr. Frank Wade

Sunday, June 9th and Monday, June 10th

You are invited to join your friends at St. Alban’s and Frank Wade, one of the Episcopal Church’s most delightful, creative and sought-after priests, for a stimulating two-part gathering that will grapple with the joys, the hunger, and the challenges of faith.

All are welcome: The faithful, the seekers and the doubters!

Belief does not just happen. It is not a gift given exclusively to the hopeful or the pious. Good believing includes conscious decisions. Continued believing includes intentional nurture. Informed believing includes a healthy understanding of what our historic covenant with God provides and, in spite of sentimental theologies, does not provide. Believing is art that can be developed, relished and relied upon.

Dr. Wade will preach at St. Alban’s on Sunday morning, June 9th and then guide a two-part conversation.

The Art of Believing Sunday June 9th at 5:00 p.m. and Monday June 10th at 9:00 a.m.

The Rev. Dr. Francis H. Wade has served as an Episcopal priest since 1966. After serving in his native West Virginia, he was called as Rector of St. Alban’s Parish on the grounds of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. He served that congregation from 1983 until his retirement in 2005. Dr. Wade is a well-loved preacher, published in a variety of anthologies. His meditations as Chaplain to the House of Deputies at the 2000 General Convention of the Episcopal Church were published and recorded by The Episcopal Media Center under the title Jubilee People, Jubilee Lives.

A book on CD by Dr. Wade titled The Art of Being Together: Common Sense About Life Long Relationships was released by Episcopal Media Center. The Forward Movement Press edition of the book is in its second printing. Church Publishing Company published his second book, Transforming Scripture, in 2008. He is a frequent contributor to Forward Movement publications including Forward Day by Day.

Dr. Wade is a faculty member at Virginia Seminary in Alexandria and taught Theology at both General and Virginia Seminaries. He served as Interim Dean of Washington National Cathedral. He is a consultant to a variety of congregations and church institutions. He has been married to the former Mary Jane Criss since 1963. They have two children and five grandchildren.

St. Alban’s Summer Seminarian

This June and July, St. Alban’s will have a seminarian assisting the clergy and staff in many features of parish life. You will meet him in person soon, but here is a short introduction.

Richard Pike is a 38-year old Diocese of New York postulant who is a rising senior Masters of Divinity student at General Theological Seminary in Chelsea, New York City. Sponsored by Grace Church in Manhattan, Richard (or Rik) serves at St. Ignatius of Antioch on the Upper West Side for field education, and is very much looking forward to his time at St. Alban’s this coming summer to gain further experience in parish ministry.

From England and confirmed in the Church of England, Rik was transferred by his employer to New York in 2004. Discovering Grace Episcopal Church as his spiritual home, Rik began to discern a growing sense of call to ordained ministry, and after a fruitful parish and diocesan discern-ment, was named a postulant by the Bishop of New York. God and the church willing, Rik hopes to be ordained a transitional deacon in 2014 and a priest soon thereafter.

Rik graduated from St. Andrews University in Scotland in 1997 with a Masters of Arts in Art History, and subsequently worked for 11 years at Christie’s auction house in both London and New York. In 2010, he moved to Bonham’s-New York, an expanding European auction house. His wife, Tracy - an American he met in New York - is the Managing Director at a contemporary art gallery in Chelsea.

Rik has lived and worked on three continents, including Australia. He enjoys photography, the outdoors, and following the soccer scene back home. In ministry, he discerns a developing call to pastoral care and preaching, but remains entirely open to wherever the Spirit sends him.

Haiti Trip Report

By Katie Payson

This spring, three St. Alban’s parishioners traveled with Fr. Tim to Haiti to joyfully cultivate our partnership with St. Luc’s Church and School in Trou du Nord.

Our first day was truly a gift. We had the opportunity to do a little sightseeing before focusing on our work and thus decided to visit the area where one of our trip members, Jerry Johnston, lived as a boy. It was an amazing experience to share in his return to his boyhood home in this beautiful yet impoverished country.

Then followed several full days in which we met with the Bishop, Pere Louis, and the new principal of the school. Many ideas were shared regarding plans and goals for the church and school. These conversations were thoughtful and informative and left us with great hope for the future of our Haitian partners. Additionally, we participated in a day of labor in which we painted a multipurpose room at the school, while workmen started to make improvements to the entrance of the church. In addition to Jerry, Tim and myself, our group included Sara Merrill, our committed committee chair. All we had to do was look around the property to see the love and care that is fueling changes to the church and school. And the students…they again welcomed us with smiles. This year we enjoyed doing an art project with them in which they created pictures of things they love, knowing that these pictures will be used by St. Alban’s to help raise funds for their school. It was wonderful to introduce the students to art and to participate with them as they moved from uncertainty to clarity about how to fill the blank piece of paper before them. Finally, we met with so many others who are in Haiti using their gifts to further support the community, and who have become our partners in this God-given endeavor.

Paul Sullivan & Theresa Thomason

On April 11th, St. Alban’s was rocking! Paul produced delightful melodies that moved and entertained. Theresa brought a mix of heart-rending, sweet song and hand-clapping gospel. Together they took the audience on a wonderful journey of tapping feet and soaring spirits.

With $3,000 of proceeds from this concert, St. Alban’s can make a significant contribution to both Preble Street and our own outreach ministries.

Thank you to all who helped make this evening

such a great success!

Communications Project Update

The Communications Project is continuing to move along! We are working to develop a fresh, new “look” for all of the St. Alban’s communications materials, including weekly emails, the website, and The Albanor.

As we have gained understanding of what this effort involves and what needs to come first, second, and third, we are realizing that our spring launch for several of these projects is a bit too aggressive. That’s why you are receiving this Albanor in much the same way you have in the past.

What we are ready to launch is the new St. Alban’s Facebook page. We are excited about the many possibilities this will offer both members of the parish and people in the wider community. All you have to do is log in to Facebook, search on St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, and look for the one in Cape Elizabeth. To become fans of this Facebook page, just “like” us on the home page you will see displayed. It’s as easy as that! We hope many of you will indeed...

More information will be available throughout the rest of the spring and summer as we get closer to rolling out

several exciting changes in September.

Directory Refresh

As part of the Communications Project this year, it is important that our records are as up-to-date as

possible. This includes names, addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, along with several other

categories. Though this may not sound like a very exciting project, the success of our future

communications, information sharing, and programming depends on it. So...

There is a form to fill out with the information we are seeking for the Directory Refresh. There are several options for

getting this information to us:

Click here for an online version of the form

Go to the St. Alban’s website to locate the online version

Plan to fill out a similar form after church some Sunday before the end of June

We hope to complete this part of the communications work before July 1st.

Your faithful attention to this action is greatly appreciated.
