Introduction

The Albany is a performing arts centre in the heart of Deptford, South East London. One stop and ten minutes on the train from Cannon Street to either New Cross or Deptford brings you within a 5 minute walk of the centre and our four performance spaces. We also manage the Culture Space at Canada Water Library and a variety of

different spaces at Deptford Lounge, the production and technical team work across all of the venues. The Albany is very much a new type of arts venue, driven by the cultural diversity and creative mix of South East London. Involving people, through participation and partnerships is central to our work and is essential to the delivery of our vision. To these ends we place very strong emphasis on access, equality and diversity throughout our organisation.

All of our spaces are of a flexible / multi-purpose nature. None of them are really square or laid out in a “standard fashion”, whilst this is quite often a challenge for some shows, the intimacy of the relationship between performers and audiences this can generate is phenomenal. We will always recommend a site visit prior to a show arriving (especially if your production’s creative team haven’t worked here previously) and will be very keen to receive technical information for your show as early as possible so we can help determine how best to land your production.

The Albany – Technical Specifications

Arrival & Load In

Access to all of the performance spaces at the Albany for all things technical is through the loading yard at the rear of the building, even if you are coming in a taxi we recommend you come to the yard. If you have access requirements then call in advance so we can ensure a smooth arrival. Pedestrian access is via the front door on Douglas Way. Please note that there is a street market on Douglas Way on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and that both street access and parking can be tricky on these days. One end of Douglas Way is a park and so completely pedestrianised.

Delivery Address

The Albany LOADING YARD Octavius Street London SE8 4AG or SE84LW – check carefully for Octavius St Satnav / GPS devices vary, some will take SE8 4AG and some SE8 4LW – either way you need to come to OCTAVIUS STREET

Getting to the Albany In a vehicle taller than 3.7m (12’ 3”) the only legal access to Octavius Street is by turning left onto Watson’s Street from the south-east bound A2 (towards Greenwich). There is no right turn from the northbound – although this may be the preferred option in an HGV. Follow the green line on the map up Watson’s street, onto Idonia street, then turn right into Rochdale way and the Albany yard is on your right at the end of Octavius street. In a vehicle under 3.7m (12’ 3”) then it is also possible to access from the A200 / Deptford High Street via Edward Street and Payne St – follow the orange line on the map. Once you have made it into the loading yard, come through the garden, into the café and through to reception via the large sliding doors. They can contact us to help you park and unload. Taxi drop offs for pedestrians are best made to either Deptford High St or the Zebra Crossing on Watson’s St. It is a short walk from Deptford, New Cross and Deptford Bridge Stations.

Loading & Parking

All of the space in the Loading Yard is needed for the day-to-day running of the building and

productions so parking and loading are only available on a pre-booked basis for show essential vehicles and companies with access requirements. We will do everything we can to facilitate your show’s requirements. Loading for all Albany spaces is via the loading yard. There is no height restriction on vehicles in the yard, but do note the getting here section above as there are several low bridges near the Albany. The Albany can only accommodate a single truck larger than 7.5t. We cannot usually accommodate 40’ trailers, if you are touring in an articulated vehicle please contact us at the earliest possible opportunity. Please note that if you are producing a music event then we will normally only be able to accommodate two vehicles for band member’s backline / equipment in the loading yard. All loading is at street level (ramp or tail-lift required for larger vehicles / equipment) De-restricted parking for non-essential vehicles is available on-street in Octavius St, Rochdale Way, Watson’s St, Idonia St and Payne St. There is also a car park in Frankham St which is a 3 minute walk away.

Opening Hours

The Albany is usually open: 09:00 to 21:00 – Monday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 – Saturday 10:00 to 14:00 – Sunday (for room bookings only) We also open when we have shows outside of these hours, if you need to work outside of these hours and this hasn’t been listed in your contract then there will be additional costs, please speak to the production team in advance of your arrival.

Access Performances & General Considerations

The Albany was awarded Gold level in Attitude is Everything’s charter of best practice. This means that the work we present must consider accessibility, and we don’t necessarily adhere to the perceived traditions of audience behaviour / etiquette. “No Latecomers” policies must be clearly justified and agreed in writing before going on sale with an event, we cannot change this once an event has gone on-sale. Ramps are usually provided to the theatre stage well for all performances and wheelchair positions will always be considered in our seating layouts. We positively encourage shows to include BSL, captioning, audio description and touch tours. Please contact the production team to talk about how we can help facilitate this with your show.

Dressing Rooms

The Albany has three permanent dressing rooms, two have dedicated WC and shower (separate accessible facilities are available front of house) and are usually attached to the theatre with video and audio show relay and paging from the theatre, the third has a sink and is usually reserved for studio productions but can be allocated to the theatre on a needs basis. Irons, ironing boards, mirrors and costume rails are provided in all rooms. Each room can accommodate up to eight people on a busy show. It is not always possible to allocate dressing rooms exclusively to a company for the duration of a production run, some sharing may be required.

Laundry

Washing machines and tumble driers are available in the scene dock, these are shared facilities between all performance spaces.

Filming

Filming and photography can be arranged for all performances, however this needs to be organised well in advance with the production team and cleared by the marketing team. In all performance spaces we will need to remove seats to make room for cameras and this will mean taking seats off-sale. If these seats have already been sold then this will not be possible.

Security

Part of our community remit is to be as open a building as possible and this can occasionally lead to security problems. Please help us keep the performance spaces safe for rehearsals and technical work by closing coded doors behind you and keeping valuables with you or locked in a dressing room. We also ask that you don’t leave any doors propped open (especially exterior ones) or rooms unattended in the public areas of the building.

Theatre – Configuration

The theatre was designed in the late 1970’s as a multi-purpose space naturally suited for theatre in the round but with the capability to perform in any orientation, it was refitted in 2000 and refurbished in 2016. It has a main stage floor and a single balcony, with one balcony bay fixed as a control position. The auditorium orientation for your performance will be detailed on your contract alongside a fixed capacity for the audience; if you are unsure of this in any way or at any stage please contact the production team as soon as possible to confirm.

Theatre – Dimensions

Without a stage, the maximum available floor space is 14.8m deep by 12.5m wide in the well of the auditorium with additional floor space underneath the balcony. The well is 170mm below the ground floor level of the building and the Albany will lay out ramps to facilitate both get-ins and patrons with access requirements. This space, along with the balcony, must accommodate both the stage and the audience. Drawings of the most common configurations are provided alongside this specification. The structure of the theatre describes a curved ceiling detail, underneath the birdcage the maximum height clearance is 5.8m (towards the centre), continuous usable height throughout the space is 4.8m. The central chimney area has 9.88m clear height but this space is only 3.0m wide and 5.3m deep and is in the very centre of the space

Theatre – Get-In

All access to the theatre is through single height doors; the smallest double doors are 2.4m wide × 2.0m tall. It is a flat load from yard to theatre (20m) with a small ramp to stage. All theatre doors are accessed from the corridor surrounding the theatre. Access to the balcony is via the staircase inside the auditorium or via the cat ladder in the scene dock.

Theatre – General

The theatre is manually climate controlled, with heating and air conditioning as required. Whilst work is going on or members of the public are in the theatre the air handling has to be on. It is not possible to switch the fan off for performances for public safety reasons. There is a bar inside the auditorium at balcony level. The bar will usually be open pre-show, during the interval and post-show. If this is likely to cause a problem for your production then please do contact the production team asap. The theatre has a large skylight with automatic blind, this allows for daylight for get-ins and rehearsals and blackout for performances and technical work. It is not possible to achieve total blackout in the auditorium as the emergency exit signs cannot be extinguished. Whilst the theatre has many potential audience configurations its maximum capacity is 500 standing and 250 in most end-on configurations. Because of the shape of the auditorium it is not usually possible to have a flat back wall to a set without losing considerable stage depth. It is also worth noting that traditional studio (or Italian) masking is not advisable in the space due to its shape, offstage masked areas are usually best under the balcony. We strongly recommend a site visit. Access to the grid is via a cat ladder in the dimmer room, accessed from the theatre balcony. There is WiFi internet in the theatre for technical rehearsal purposes, please ask for the password.

The floor under the balcony can only take a screw of 12mm maximum length.

We only allow PVC dance floor tape to be used to fix to the floor or staging, no gaffer tape.

It is not permitted to drill, screw, staple or tape to any part of the fabric of the building and especially any part of the balcony. If you need to attach anything to the balcony then the only likely

permitted way will be via cable tie, tie or velcro to the steelwork. Any company found to be taping

or stapling will be recharged in full for making good any damage to the fabric of the building.

• 6 single channel

• 6 dual channel beltpacks Green Go wireless intercom linked to wired system

• 1 dual channel wireless beltpack

Theatre – Control Position

The theatre refurbishment has moved and altered the control position(s) in August 2016. The control position is off-axis for most configurations of the theatre but has a good line of sight to stage in most permutations. It consists of a single balcony bay for both lighting and sound, and can best be described as snug. If a central mix position or additional space for large consoles etc. is required this can be provided but will result in a loss of seats for sale for every performance. This must be negotiated with the production department at the earliest possible opportunity.

Houselights The Theatre’s houselights comprise a custom GDS tungsten LED system, with backstage blues and additional LED accent lighting by Anolis. The multi-purpose nature of the space has led us to make this an incredibly flexible system; so this is all controlled by a Unison Paradigm system with touchscreen control. Control can be taken by your lighting desk however if this is essential to the aesthetic of your production we recommend talking to us about how this is best achieved.

Intelligent Lighting We have recently invested in a very dynamic LED based rig, the fixtures have been very carefully chosen for theatrical purposes with proper tungsten dimming and quiet fan noise to complement the generic units. Some of the rig is fixed in its position to save time on set-ups and get outs, please see attached rig plan. If this presents significant problems for you please do get in touch and we will endeavour to help resolve any problems. The units consist of:

Studio – Configuration

The Studio is a multi-purpose space naturally suited for intimate performance in a variety of audience configurations. The auditorium orientation for your performance will be detailed on your contract alongside a fixed capacity for the audience; if you are unsure of this please contact the production team to confirm.

Studio – Dimensions

Without a stage the maximum available floor space is 7.5m by 7.5m with additional floor space underneath the perch. This space must accommodate the stage, the audience and fire exits. Drawings of the most common configurations are provided alongside this specification. The structure of the studio describes a sloping ceiling detail; the grid is nominally at 4.0m with a continuous usable height, beneath lanterns of 3.5m. There are no structural rigging points in the space that are not lighting bars.

Studio – Get-In

All loading access to the studio is through single height doors; the narrowest point is double doors that are 2.4m wide × 2.0m tall. It is a flat load from the yard, through the dock and backstage corridor to the studio (40m). Access to the control perch is via the vertical ladder inside the auditorium or via the central staircase.

Studio – General

The studio is manually climate controlled, with heating and ventilation as required (very noisy). The Studio has a maximum capacity of 100; seated capacities will be between 30 and 50 people depending on the configuration. The Studio does not have a perfect blackout or noise isolation from the street outside or the theatre, the emergency exit signs cannot be extinguished. There is minimal wing space available in the studio. We strongly recommend a site visit. Access to the grid is via ten step A-Frame Zarge ladders.

Studio – Stage

Black wool serge drapes on two sides (sides to street) Plain scaffold barrel grid with 18 no. 15A socket outlets distributed around the room

Black painted, 8mm hardboard skimmed, concrete floor – it is not possible to screw to the floor.

company found to be taping or stapling will be recharged in full for making good any damage

to the fabric of the building.

Studio – Control Position

The control position is usually on the perch above the main doors and depending on the configuration of the space can have a tricky line of sight to stage. Control can be moved downstairs but will likely result in a reduction in audience capacity. This must be negotiated with the production department at the earliest possible opportunity.

The Café

Albany Tech Spec – All Sites

Date: 01/09/2016 Revision: A [email protected] Page 19 of 35 0208 692 0231 ext.231

Café – Configuration

The café is also a multi-purpose space naturally suited for performances and events in several different audience configurations. The configuration for your event will be detailed on your contract alongside a fixed capacity for the audience; if you are unsure of this in any way or at any stage please contact the production team to confirm.

Café – Dimensions

Without staging or furniture the approximate available floor space is a triangle 12m by 12m by 15m. This space must accommodate any sort of stage(s), the audience, fire exits and any furniture. Drawings of the most common configurations are provided alongside this specification. The structure of the café describes a sloping ceiling detail; the grid is made of 7 diagonal lighting bars and a long bar linking the base of two of these. At its highest point the grid is 4.3m and 3.0m at its lowest. At its lowest point, along the wall by the garden, the ceiling is at 2.35m. There are no structural rigging points in the space that are not lighting bars. If the existing café furniture is not required for your event then an ancillary room will be required for this to be stored in which may have a charge.

Café – Get-In

All loading access to the Café is through single height doors; the narrowest point is double doors that are 2.2m wide × 2.0m tall. It is a flat load from the yard, but it is a long way either through the building (40m) or across the somewhat uneven patio (30m). We strongly recommend wheels for large or heavy items, we do have some trolleys for moving equipment but these may not suit your specific requirements.

Café – General

The café is manually climate controlled, with heating and air conditioning as required (can be noisy). The café has a maximum capacity of 100 seated or 120 with some standing. The cafe does not have blackout or noise isolation from the rest of the building, the emergency exit signs cannot be extinguished. Access to the grid is via ten step A-Frame Zarge ladders.

Café - Stage

plain scaffold barrel grid with 18 no. 15A socket outlets distributed across the space. 8m of Black Wool Serge Drape on long wall in front of room 1. This cannot be moved.

Green vinyl floor – it is not possible to screw to the floor. We only allow PVC dance floor tape to be

used to fix to the floor or staging, no gaffer tape.

It is not permitted to drill, screw, staple or tape to any part of the fabric of the building. If you need to attach anything then the only likely permitted way will be via cable tie, tie or Velcro. Any

company found to be screwing, taping or stapling will be recharged in full for making good

any damage to the fabric of the building.

Café – Control Position

The control position is usually a rolling rack outside the door to room 2. This can be moved depending on the configuration of the space.

Canada Water Culture Space – Technical Specifications

Arrival & Load In

Access to the Culture Space for all things technical is through the fire exit at the side of the building, from the plaza. Pedestrian access is via doors on two corners of the building facing Surrey Canal Road. Please note that there is very limited parking at Canada Water Culture Space.

Delivery Address

Canada Water Culture Space Canada Water Library 21 Surrey Quays Road London SE16 7AR 0207 525 2931 - Office

Getting to the Culture Space The best way to get to the Culture Space is by London Overground, Underground (Jubilee Line) or bus. In a vehicle, access is from Surrey Quays Road, off the A200. As this is really quite close to the southern end of the Rotherhithe tunnel it is quite convenient for travel from the north but drivers should be aware of rush hour traffic. From Surrey Quays Road, you need to drive onto the Plaza – the best access to the Plaza is by the zebra crossing. Once on the Plaza head slowly (5mph, hazards on) for the big angular building that looks like a Jawa sand crawler from Star Wars and the double width fire exit next to some huge doors. This is the best place to load / unload. Taxi drop offs for pedestrians and people with access requirements are best made to the layby immediately next to the library building. It is a very short walk from Canada Water Station, and a brief walk from Surrey Quays station.

Date: 01/09/2016 Revision: A [email protected] Page 26 of 35 0208 692 0231 ext.231

Loading & Parking

It is only possible to load / unload on the Plaza outside the venue, parking for any duration will result in a ticket, for which the Albany will not be liable. Currently there is unregulated parking in the leisure park car park (Odeon etc.). The retail car parks (Tesco etc.) have a 4hr time limit. We strongly advise that the only vehicles brought to the space are ones bringing set, large props and equipment. There is no height restriction on vehicles in the locality however the largest vehicle that will be able to access the Plaza is a Luton style van. All loading is at street level (ramp or tail-lift required for larger vehicles / equipment) De-restricted parking for non-essential vehicles is currently available in the leisure park (Odeon etc.).

Opening Hours

The Library & therefore Culture Space is usually open: 09:00 to 20:00 – Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00 – Saturday 12:00 to 16:00 – Sunday (for room bookings only) We also open when we have shows outside of these hours, if you need to work outside of these hours and this hasn’t been listed in your contract then there will be additional costs, please speak to the production team in advance of your arrival.

Access Performances & General Considerations

The Albany was awarded Gold level in Attitude is Everything’s charter of best practice and the Culture Space is a satellite venue working towards this charter, but has yet to receive an award. This means that the work we present must consider accessibility, and we don’t necessarily adhere to the perceived traditions of audience behaviour / etiquette. “No Latecomers” policies must be clearly justified and agreed in writing before going on sale with an event, we cannot change this once an event has gone on-sale and wheelchair positions will always be considered in our seating layouts. We positively encourage shows to include BSL, captioning or audio description. Please contact the production team to talk about how we can help facilitate this with your show.

Dressing Rooms

The Culture Space has a permanent dressing room, this does not have dedicated WC or shower (WC’s are in the main foyer or upstairs in the office area, there is a shower in the office area). An iron, ironing board, mirrors and costume rail are provided. The room can accommodate between 4 and 6 people.

Laundry

There are no laundry facilities at Canada Water. The laundry at the Albany can be used but please bear in mind that this is a minimum of an hours round trip.

Filming

Filming and photography can be arranged for all performances, however this needs to be organised well in advance with the production team and cleared by the marketing team. In all spaces we will need to remove seats to make room for cameras and this will mean taking the seats off-sale. If these seats have already been sold then this will not be possible.

Albany Tech Spec – All Sites

Culture Space – Configuration

Canada Water Library and the Culture Space were opened in 2011 as a multi-purpose space, naturally suited for end on thrust theatre, comedy and music but with a retractable seating rake allowing it to cope with traverse or more dynamic audience configurations. It has a main stage floor and a fixed control position.

Culture Space – Dimensions

With the seating rake deployed the stage is an odd shaped polygon with maximum dimensions of 9m wide by 6m deep, however the largest available square performance area is 6m wide by 4.5m deep. The walls of the culture space are not all vertical, as the external walls of the building slope out significantly. Drawings of the venue are provided alongside this specification. The grid comprises an array of internally wired lighting bars at 5m height. The IWB’s are on very long stud drops so there are no suspension points in the venue that do not cause the grid to wobble. If you need to fly any item then please contact the production team at the earliest possible opportunity

Culture Space – Get-In

All access to the culture space is through single height doors; the smallest double doors are 2.2m wide × 2.0m tall. It is a flat load from Plaza to culture space (2m).

Culture Space – General

The culture space is automatically climate controlled, with heating and air conditioning set by the Building Management System . It is not possible to switch the air handling off. It is not possible to achieve total blackout in the auditorium, the emergency exit signs cannot be extinguished. The Culture Space maximum capacity is 148. Because of the shape of the auditorium it is not possible to have traditional studio (or Italian) masking and it is very in-advisable to have booms in the space due to its shape and the way audiences take their seats. We strongly recommend a site visit. Access to the grid is via a 12 rung A-Frame Zarges ladder. There is intermittent WiFi internet in the Culture Space, please ask for the password

steelwork or seating rake. Any company found to be screwing, taping or stapling will be

recharged in full for making good any damage to the fabric of the building.

The Main Hall and Studio are the spaces most likely to be used for performance, however the terrace bar, music room, meeting rooms, foyer and children’s library are all possible for performance. This specification is currently focussed on the main hall and studio – please ask us about the other spaces. The Main Hall and Studio are on the FIRST FLOOR

Laundry

There are no laundry facilities at Deptford Lounge. The laundry at the Albany can be used and is a short walk onto Douglas Way.

Filming

Filming and photography can be arranged for all performances, however this needs to be organised well in advance with the production team and cleared by the marketing team. In all of the spaces we will need to remove seats to make room for cameras and this will mean taking the seats off-sale. If these seats have already been sold then this will not be possible.

Deptford Lounge – Configuration

Deptford Lounge was opened in 2012 as a revolutionary new way of thinking about libraries and communities: it’s a library, a primary school, artists’ studios, residential accommodation and meeting rooms. The library isn’t supposed to be quiet, it’s a lounge. The Albany operates the Lounge element which is library, halls, meeting rooms, music room, food science room, ballcourt and facilities. The most technical of the spaces for performance are the main hall and the studio which can become one if the large acoustic partition between them is opened

Deptford Lounge, Main Hall & Studio – Dimensions

The main hall is 12.2m wide by 17.75m long (not quite rectangular), the studio is 10.4m wide by 11.8m deep (almost square); together they create a really big space. The main hall is 7.6m high with a central skylight (with blackout blind) but due to the lighting bars and curtain track the continuous usable height is 4.65m. The grid is at 6m. The studio is much lower, with ceiling at 3.3m but allowing for the strip lighting continuous usable height is only 2.8m Recommended maximum playing space in the main hall is 11.5m width by 6m depth.

Deptford Lounge, Main Hall & Studio – Get-In

The Main Hall and Studio are both on the FIRST FLOOR. Access for all things technical to the Lounge is through single height doors; the smallest doorway using normal access is 1.42m wide × 2.04m tall. There are two lifts, the most convenient of which is 2.0m x 1.32m by 2.14m high, the lift doors are 0.89m wide and 2.10m tall. It is possible to carry 4m long lengths up the staircase to the space, anything longer will have to be carried up via the playground and terrace room – both these rooms need to be clear in order to do so.

Deptford Lounge, Main Hall & Studio – General

The spaces are automatically climate controlled, with heating and ventilation set by the Building Management System It is not possible to switch the air handling off. It is not possible to achieve total blackout in the spaces, the emergency exit signs cannot be extinguished. The Main Hall maximum capacity is 150, the studio is 100. Used as one space together the maximum is 300. We strongly recommend a site visit. Access to the grid is via a 14 rung A-Frame Zarges ladder, which will have to come from the Albany There is WiFi internet at Deptford Lounge, but this requires a Lewisham library card.

Deptford Lounge, Main Hall & Studio – Stage

Black Molton Drapes on track upstage. Black Molton Drapes on winch track from sides of stage to act as house tabs. There are electric blackout blinds for both the skylight and windows. Light wood semi-sprung floor throughout. The Studio has a 10m wall of mirrors for dance.

We only allow PVC dance floor tape to be used to fix to the floor, no gaffer tape whatsoever.

It is not permitted to drill, screw, staple or tape to any part of the fabric of the building. If you need to attach to anything then please ask. Any company found to be screwing, taping or stapling

will be recharged in full for making good any damage to the fabric of the building.
