Carlin Sunday

Many people think that Lent is dull and dreary, when we have to give up things that we like, to remind us of Jesus fasting in the Wilderness. We might give up chocolate, or biscuits or some other treat we now take for granted, but actually, there are lots of things to look forward to.

Children are waiting for Easter Sunday and the Easter Bunny to bring chocolate eggs. Not many have the dyed boiled eggs that some of us waited to get at Easter. In fact, not all children know the origins of the Pace Eggs. But that's for another year.

There are other highlights in Lent. Mothers enjoy Mothering Sunday, and treats such as flowers, chocolates or being taken out for lunch (after breakfast in bed). It is on the 4th Sunday of Lent, 30th March, if you need reminding,

Palm Sunday is the last Sunday, 13th Apri l, and reminds us of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. If you are near the church at 9 am you might see the congregation processing round holding up their Palm Crosses.

There again, if you hail from the north east or some parts of north Yorkshire you might remember the traditions of your childhood on the Sunday before Palm Sunday, that is the fifth Sunday of Lent, wh ich is known as Carlin Sunday. Its church name is Passion Sunday.

On Carlin Sunday and we trad itionally eat Carl in Peas. These are really Maple Peas, and other names for them are Black Peas, Brown Badgers and Pigeon Peas. The latter is most common around Newcastle and comes from the fact they're used as pigeon food . Many of my uncles were pigeon racers, and often brought some home to be cooked for dinner. (We did not eat meat in Lent) Heath and Safety people nowadays would be horrified.

You prepare Carlins by soaking them overnight and then boi ling them for up to an hour - depending how soft you like your peas (they are tough so it's difficult to overcook them). Then you can fry them in a little butter for a few minutes add some salt and plenty of vinegar to the pan and boil it away to a sauce. Then enjoy!

I have been told that in Yorkshire, Carlings were made on Mothering Sunday instead of on the fifth Sunday in Lent. Perhaps Yorkshire folk were less patient than Geordies and could not wait an extra week!

Certainly, these small black peas were eaten in Elizabethan times. In those days beans and peas were a large part of the staple diet. Probably grown by monks of the early Middle Ages, in the monastery gardens. The six-foot high plants produce abundant crops and can be eaten when fresh, or dried for use in the winter months.

There are rhymes that mentioned them. At school, we learnt to count the Sundays of Lent as:-

Tid , Mid , Miserai Carlin , Palm, Paste egg day. We shall have a holiday, bonny frocks on Easter day.

If you are from Durham, you probably said a different rhyme, referring to the flatulent effect of eating too many carlins. I will not put it in print, but you can ask me if you see me round the village

Carlins also had an important place in the history of Newcastle. It was a Royalist stronghold, supporting King Charles during the civil war. A Scottish army crossed the border in 1644 and swept south intent on capturing Newcastle to secure the coal supplies on behalf of their allies the parliamentarians. Newcastle would not give in easily, and the city was put under siege. The siege lasted from July until October and at one point the food ran out and the people were starving. Just when thing were at their worst a Dutch ship saved them by evading the blockade and reaching the port with its cargo of carlings .

We eat our carlins hot with salt, pepper and vinegar. However, my granddad loved them sprinkled with brown sugar and a good splash of rum.

Problems at St Mary's

We have problems at St Mary's. It may be due to general wear and tear, it could be caused by the high winds, or it might be something a bit more worrying.

Masonry has been falling from the church, especially on the west end of the church. Some of this is from the rendering on the buttresses, but there is a possibility that some is from the old bell fixtures.

The pathway has been closed off, and people are asked to use the south and east paths to go to the churchyard. Unfortunately, some people ignore this request and choose to trample over the borders instead. They say there are no flowers where they step, but that is because they have been trod on.

We are hoping to get scaffolding up in the next few weeks, so that we can get a better idea of the extent of the problem, and estimates for repairs.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by our attempts to maintain safety for people coming into the churchyard.

We will keep you informed of what needs to be done.

The angling club are going to stock the Aire and Calder canal with Roach in the near

future Carpvale will supply the fish a mixed weight batch supplied by the pound. The

advantage of having mixed size fish is that some will spawn this year giving the

potential for more roach to breed on within the canal. Last year the venue fished

very well and good match weights an pleasure weights of f ish were recorded it is

hoped as in the past that a new influx of fish will encourage the resident f ish to

compete for food and give members excellent sport.

The new night permits for Lowther Lake are proving very popular and may have to be

limited in the future with Bream, carp and Tench into double figures along with very

large Pike many anglers are able to catch a f ish of a lifetime when the cond itions

prevail. The venue can be very hard to fish at t imes but with the right conditions can

be proli fic owing to the ongoing stocking wh ich has taken place and will continue.

During netting operations on the Grand Union Canal in Watford a team of f isheries

staff got a shock when they netted a 81b Eel whi lst repairing pa rts of the canal. It is

very rare to find one of this size in a canal network and it is estimated to be around

50 years old .

Whilst on holiday in Bangkok Allerton born Wayne Murray [right] caught this Mega

bob Catfish weighing 1731bs on Bungs Am Lake. Fishing from the bank it took him 55

minutes to land the fish and left him exhausted. Leon Mason his fishing mate is seen

helping to hold the fish .

Great British Fish and Chip Supper ~ Friday 16th May 2014

Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 16th May 2014 whi lst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SI !~s vital services.

You can hold a f ish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.

SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fund raising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.

In 2014 SIA is celebrating its 40th anniversary and so we want to make the batter matter and raise £25,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,500 from the suppers.

The money ra ised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebui ld lives after spinal cord injury.

Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.

Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, "The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. SHORT HISTORY OF CASTLEFORD

Castleford dates back to Roman times it is believed to have been built on a Roman

army settlement. Queens Park was a strategic area as it overlooked the entire

settlement. Another important Historical event was Oliver Cromwell's encampment

within the town.

Castleford became a boom town in the 19th century with the population expanding

from around a 1000 to 14000 as the coal mines opened within the area, most of

them are now closed although [Big K] Kellingley Colliery along with new warehouses

and distribution centres provide work for local residents. Castleford is also home to

Burberry the famous retailer and designer label the chemical works are gone and the

chocolate and sweet factory a shadow of its former self. With an estimated

population of 39192 residents with 21per cent retired. The area has a very low

percentage of residents educated to degree level approx. 7% which is way below the

national average of 20%, house prices are below the national average and the crime

figures are higher than the national average as well as the average for West

Yorkshire.

Castleford became an Municipal Borough in 1955, following the Local Government

act in 1972 it was abolished and in 1974 becoming an unparished area of the City of

Wakefield.

Castleford is a Rugby League Town the side was formed in 1926. Castleford Tigers

[1992] were one of the founder members of the Super League when it was formed in

1996. They have won the Challenge Cup on four occasions. The club has been based

at Wheldon Road since 1927. The original team played in the Northern Union [Rugby

Football League].

Back in the 1920s Castleford had a football team that played in the Midland league

alongside Doncaster Rovers Chesterfield, Scunthorpe United, Halifax Town and Leeds

United {1919-1920 season only].ln 1920 they reached the second round of the FA

Cup losing to Bradford Park Avenue. Castleford played at Wheldon Road when they

shut down it was taken over by the rugby league team

.From 1979 to 1980 Castleford had a speedway team liThe Kings" based at Whitwood

Greyhound Stadium the track was only 220 yards long and the team never entered

any league, only challenge matches were arranged.

Set oven to 325F Gas Mark 3.Grease and line a 7 inch round cake tin.

Put the butter, sugar, fruit and water into a saucepan, bring slowly to

DURHAM CATHEDRAL

The seat ofthe Anglican Bishop of Durham. The bishopric dates from 995, with the

present cathedral being founded in AD 1093. It is regarded as one of the finest

examples of Norman architecture and has been designated a UNESCO World

Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle, which faces it across Palace Green.

The treasures of the Cathedral include relics of St Cuthbert, the head of St Oswald of

Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede. In addition its Library contains

one ofthe most complete sets of early printed books in England, the pre - Dissolution

monastic accounts and three copies ofthe Magna Carta.

It stands in a strategic position on a promontory high above the River Wear. From

1080 until the 19th century the bishopric enjoyed the powers of a Bishop Palatine,

having military as well as religious leadership powers . Durham Castle was built as the

residence for the Bishop of Durham. The seat of the Bishop of Durham is the fourth

most significant in the Church of England hierarchy. The Bishop stands at the right

hand of the monarch at coronations.

On the Dissolution ofthe Monastery's Cuthbert's tomb was destroyed on the orders

of Henry the Eighth in 1538 and the monasteries wealth handed over to the king. The

body of the saint was exhumed, and according to the Rites of Durham, was

discovered to be uncorrupted. It was reburied under a plain slab worn by the knees

of pilgrims. But the ancient paving around it remains intact. Two Years later on 31 sI

December 1540 the Benedictine Monastery at Durham was dissolved and the last

Prior of Durham Hugh Whitehead became the first dean of the Cathedrals secular

chapter.

After the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 the Cathedral was used by Oliver Cromwell to

house Scottish prisoners of war it is estimated 3000 were held of which an estimated

1700 died many were buried in unmarked graves, the survivors were shipped as slave

labour to North America . During work being undertaken in 1946 a mass grave of the

Scottish soldiers was allegedly uncovered . In 2007 a campaign was launched to

commemorate the Dunbar Martyrs. During 2010 it was agreed a memorial plaque

could be erected and campaigners are raising funds to assist with the cost and

creation plus installation of the plaque which will bear the Scottish Thistle. Recently

the Cathedral has been used in the Harry Potter films as Hogwarts School.
