ALMISIANS STRIKE HATRICK IN NECTA NATIONAL EXAMS
The NECTA National Examination results revealed a third time success story for ALMIS with Zainab Hassan standing in the top 10 position (female) in the country. This comes as a third success in a row after Fidahussein Premji obtained top 10 position in Math in 2009 and Shabnam Khatri got top female award in the country for Chemistry in 2010. At the same time, ALMIS maintained its 100% pass rate with 36% of the students achieving top divisions.
PRIMARY SCHOOL GRADE 7 STUDY TOUR
In May 2011, the ALMIS organized a study tour for the Al Muntazir Boys and Girls Primary Grade 7 students. The main aim was to familiarize them with the secondary school environment and create awareness on the international curriculum offered by the school. The event started off with the visit by students, supervised by secondary and primary teachers, to the computer and science labs together with the school library. The students were also taken around to different classrooms, canteen and the bookshop. After the tour, a brief presentation was done by the Principal who talked about the international education system, and how the school is facilitating a good learning environment for the curriculum to be learnt effectively.

ALMISIAN Zainab Hassan (NECTA) secured 5th position out of 44,750 students country-wide in the NECTA Form 6 exams held in February 2011. To recognize the achievement, she was invited to the Parliament together with the other winners. She was accompanied by three of the NECTA Science teachers. The Prime Minister of Tanzania, Hon Peter Mizengo Pinda, awarded Zainab for being among the top ten female students in the country. In recognition for the efforts made by the school, Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary was also awarded certificate of recognition. Together with that, the three science teachers who accompanied Zainab Hassan; Mr. AbdulWaheed Zakaria (Biology), Mr. Rashid Maghembe (Chemistry) and Mr. Patrick Sangu (Physics) were also awarded certificates of recognition for being among the best 31 science teachers in the country.
From the 18th to 22nd July, the most significant and recognized week of the entire school year for ALMIS - The Al Muntazir Week - was organized. The week, which coincides with the celebration of the birth of Imam Mahdi (AS), was dedicated this year to the theme of Education Empowers - Let’s Share It! At the Seminary, in both the boys and girls wings, different activities were organized by House Captains and other students. Some of these activities included impromptu speeches on the importance of education, Mathionaire program that tested the mathematical skills of the students, assembly talks etc. The school also organized a Book Hunt
program where students went searching for specific books in the library based on the clues given.
The main event caught up at the end of the week on Friday in the form of the Flag Raising program. The event was marked by the presence of several special guests, including Mrs. Mariam Tejani (First Principal of ALMIS) on the girls side and Mr. Mohammedtaki Rajwani (Member of the Trustees for the KSI Jamaat). The program started with a parade by group of students followed by the hoisting of the National and School flags by the chief guests. This was followed by the glimpses of various activities that had taken place in the week, concluding the week long celebrations.

I have been an advocate of avoiding fried foods. However firm we are in avoiding frying foods, you sometimes cant help and avoid enjoying eating foods that are fried…not only are they crunchy but they also taste so good. So resisting the temptation to enjoy great food is difficult. But at the expense of health and heart attacks!
I came across a recent article in the Harvard Medical School Health Publication: HealthBeat which I want to share especially to parents who allow their kids to enjoy french fries almost at every meal.
If you needed another reason to avoid trans fats, here it is. Researchers with the ongoing Nurses’ Health Study measured the amount of trans fat stored in red blood cells. Among the 32,000 middle-aged women participating in the study, 166 had heart attacks or died of heart disease during a six-year period. Their red blood cells had slightly higher loads of trans fat than did red blood cells of 327 women of the same ages and characteristics who remained free of heart disease.
Artificial trans fats are found in hard margarines, many commercially baked goods, and the fried foods in many restaurants, and research has consistently shown they aren’t good for the heart and blood vessels. Across the board, the more trans fat in red blood cells, the greater the chances of having a heart attack. Women with the highest trans fat load had triple the risk of women with the lowest. This study, published in the April 10, 2007, Circulation, strongly supports recommen-dations by the Institute of Medicine and the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans to cut back — or better yet, cut out — trans fats in the diet. Eliminating them from the food supply could avert as many as 264,000 heart attacks and heart-related deaths each year in the United States alone. Another reason to be alarmed over what we perceived a s a way of showing affection and reward to our kids… Crunchy fried chicken and french fries. If we indulge in these kinds of foods once in a while or only during children’s parties .. its acceptable BUT if our kids eat only fried foods be-cause that’s the only food they will eat then it will do no good to their future!
Start training them young. My friend Maxim is one nice guy to dine with because he’s health conscious and therefore you tend to follow what he eats or be conscious of what you order. And I guess there is so much truth to the study that showed…if your friends are obese, the more likely you will too….
A Feast with French Fries is A Feast with Trans Fat!
