Some years ago I was able to spend three months in the Holy land as part of our seminary training at Mundelein Seminary. We spent quite some time on the road as we attempt to reach the several destinations in a charter bus with big windows that allowed us to see the vista. One of the things that called my attention was that sometimes in the midst of the wilderness, in the desert a shepherd would appear with his flock. You could notice him trying to gaze for a space with some grass, or some shade, or a small stream of water. His concern for his flock was evident and real. In many ways taking care of his flock meant taking care of his live hood. The sheep were his life. It was indispensable to care for it, to save it from all harm. In today's gospel Jesus acquires the image of the loving pastor concerned by his sheep. Within this image, humanity is represented by the sheep of the flock. But, why being represented by this particular creature? Why are we represented by a sheep? There's nothing glamorous about a sheep. They don't seem to be intelligent, they appear to be mere followers, they could be at sometimes stubborn and sometimes they even are stinky. These attributes may be true. But it’s also true the fact that the sheep depend and trust their shepherd. They depend on his goodness, reliability and direction. They are gentle beings whose faculties allowed then to recognize the voice of their shepherd. They are a source of food, milk, wool and warmth. They give life! This presents a challenge. If we are represented by the sheep... In what way do we give life? How are we sources of comfort, support, nourishment and life for others? How do we follow the right voice? We are in a world full of voices. Voices that invite us to "be number one", no matter what, voices that invite us to focus on the material, "you are what you got", voices that call us to satisfy all our personal-individual needs, without considering other realities or the consequences of such individualistic posture. Voices that call us not to be truthful, not to be just, not to be compassionate but “to be happy” as if “to be happy” on the superficial level, is to be enough. (Isabel Allende) Do we hear the voice of the shepherd? Do we hear him calling us to be children of the light; rejecting everything that is selfish, nurturing others, acting with justice? Which voice are we listening? Or do we simply go along with the voice that decides that someone's life is not productive and allowing a judge simply to pull the plug? Which voice do we hear? The Jesus in the Gospel according to John is the Shepherd who gives his life to keep the flock together. Jesus in a desire to redeem the world, in a desire to bring justification to humanity and ultimately salvation becomes the Lamb of God. He is the perfect sacrifice, the oblation that will erase all faults and all sins. He opens the door for others to enter and in so be redeemed. But there's a catch, there's no such thing as a free lunch in this town. Pope John Paul II paid the price, Mother Theresa of Calcutta paid the price, and Monsignor Oscar Romero paid the price. We must believe and in believing, we must pay the price by being the good sheep, listening to Jesus’ voice and also being good shepherds… Parents to children, teacher to students, friend to friend, neighbor to neighbor. Community of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, may God give us a Spirit of discernment, humility and truth to acknowledge that Jesus is the gate, the gatekeeper and the shepherd who takes away the sins of the world.

Hace algunos años pude pasar tres meses en Tierra Santa como parte de nuestro entrenamiento del seminario en el Seminario de Mundelein. Pasamos bastante tiempo en la carretera mientras intentamos llegar a varios destinos en un autobús con grandes ventanales que nos permitieron ver el paisaje. Una de las cosas que me llamó la atención fue que a veces en medio del desierto, aparecía un pastor con su rebaño. Podrías notarlo tratando de buscar un espacio con algo de pasto, algo de sombra o donde hubiera agua. Su preocupación por su rebaño era evidente y real. En muchos sentidos, cuidar de su rebaño significaba cuidar de su propia supervivencia. Las ovejas eran su vida. Era indispensable cuidarlas, salvarlas de todo mal. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús adquiere la imagen del pastor amoroso preocupado por sus ovejas. Dentro de esta imagen, la humanidad está representada por las ovejas del rebaño. Pero, ¿por qué estar representado por esta criatura en particular? ¿Por qué estamos representados por una oveja? No hay nada glamoroso en una oveja. No parecen ser inteligentes, parecen ser meros seguidores, pueden ser a veces tercos y a veces hasta huelen mal. Estos atributos pueden ser ciertos. Pero también es cierto el hecho de que las ovejas dependen y confían en su pastor. Confían en su bondad, su buena

intención y sentido de dirección. Son seres mansos cuyas facultades les permitieron entonces reconocer la voz de su pastor. Son fuente de alimento, leche, lana y calor. ¡Dan vida! Esto presenta un desafío. Si somos

representados por las ovejas... ¿De qué manera damos vida? ¿Cómo somos fuentes de consuelo, apoyo, alimento y vida para los demás? ¿Cómo seguimos la voz correcta? Estamos en un mundo lleno de voces. Voces que nos invitan a "ser número uno", pase lo que pase, voces que nos invitan a centrarnos en lo material, "eres lo que tienes", voces que nos llaman a satisfacer todas nuestras necesidades personales-individuales, sin considerar otras realidades o las consecuencias de tal postura individualista. Voces que nos llaman a no ser sinceros, a no ser justos, a no ser compasivos sino a “ser felices”, como si esto de, “ser felices” en el nivel

superficial, simplemente es suficiente. (Isabel Allende) ¿Oímos la voz del pastor? ¿Lo escuchamos llamándonos a ser hijos de la luz; rechazando todo lo egoísta, nutrir a los demás, actuar con justicia? ¿Qué voz estamos escuchando? ¿O simplemente estamos de acuerdo

con la voz que decide que la vida de alguien no es productiva y permitimos que un juez simplemente desconecte el respirador? ¿Qué voz escuchamos? El Jesús en el Evangelio según Juan es el Pastor que da su vida para mantener unido al rebaño. Jesús en el deseo de redimir al mundo, en el deseo de traer la justificación a la humanidad y finalmente la salvación se convierte en el Cordero de Dios. Él es el sacrificio perfecto, la oblación que borrará todas las faltas y todos los pecados. él abre la puerta para que otros entren y sean redimidos. Pero hay un detalle, no existe un almuerzo gratis en esta ciudad. El Papa Juan Pablo II pagó el precio, la Madre Teresa de Calcuta pagó el precio y Monseñor Oscar Romero pagó el precio. Debemos creer y al creer, debemos pagar el precio siendo buenas ovejas, escuchando la voz de Jesús y también siendo buenos pastores... De padres a hijos, de maestros a alumnos, de amigos a amigos, de vecinos a vecinos. Comunidad de San Luis Gonzaga, que Dios nos dé un espíritu de discernimiento, humildad y verdad para reconocer que Jesús es la puerta, el guardián y el pastor que quita los pecados del mundo.

Educación Religiosa—Registro Temprano

In John 10:11-18, Jesus reveals himself as the good shepherd who knows his flock and sacrifices himself for them. As we are called to serve our communities and or our parishes, we must never forget how a good shepherd serves his flock. It is through self-sacrifice of our time and talent, patience and understanding for others. There is a common phrase for Catholics, “God doesn’t call the qualified, but He qualifies the called”. God knows us and He calls us each by name. Just as we look at different saints or clergy to learn from them, others look at and learn from us. The church of tomorrow depends on how we set the foundation for the church of today. One person we can look at and model is Saint Teresa of Calcutta, who founded the Missionaries of Charity to serve people who were struggling with their lives and suffering from various diseases. During her lifetime, she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, and she did not discriminate against anyone because of their religious background. And when she struggled, she too turned to her own shepherd for guidance and help. We are all called to serve, just like Saint Teresa of Calcutta, just like Jesus. It is normal to sometimes feel overwhelmed, but never forget that you always have a good shepherd that you can turn to when you feel lost or in doubt. En el Evangelio de Juan 10:11-18, Jesús se nos revela como el buen pastor que conoce a su rebaño y se sacrifica por ellos. Según somos llamados a servir a nuestras comunidades y parroquias, debemos tener en mente como un buen pastor sirve a su rebaño. Es por medio del sacrificio personal de nuestro tiempo y talento, y nuestra paciencia y entendimiento hacia los demás. Existe un refrán típico entre católicos, “Dios no llama a los cualificados, cualifica a los llamados.” Dios nos conoce y nos llama a todos por nombre. Según nos fijamos en diferentes santos o miembros del clero para aprender de ellos, otros se fijan y buscan aprender de nosotros. La iglesia del futuro depende de la fundación de la iglesia de hoy. Una persona quien nos sirve de ejemplo es Santa Teresa de Calcutta, quien fundó la Orden de los Misioneros de la Caridad para servir a personas luchando con sus vidas y sufriendo de varias enfermedades. Dedico su vida a ministrar a los pobres, enfermos, huérfanos y agonizados sin discriminación alguna. Y cuando sufría, se apoyaba a su buen pastor para guía y ayuda. A ejemplo de Santa Teresa de Calcutta y Jesús, todos somos llamados a servir. Es normal sentirse abrumado de vez en cuando, pero no olviden que siempre que nos sentimos perdidos o en duda podemos acercarnos a un buen pastor. SPRING 2021 The Institute for Diaconal Studies (IDS) invites all men who feel the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit to attend the last Exploring the Diaconate session taking place on April 29 at 7:30-8:30PM via Zoom. It is a time to pray, discuss, and learn more about the discernment process and the for-mation program that aspirants and candidates pursue.
