It is easy to understand that a patient having a full medical emergency in the dental office would be disruptive to not onlythe patient but also the dentist, staff and office. While true medical emergencies are not usually preventable, there

are many things that can be done by dental offices to minimize the risks of an emergency occurring. In addition, offices thatare prepared to deal with the common emergencies will usually have less disruption than those that are not. This courseis designed to prepare you for the possibility of a medical emergency and allow you to recognize it and provide initial treatmentwithout creating undue stress in your practice.

I have a philisophicalquestion for all of you to

think about, please send meyour answers.

I know in Washington, D.C. our senators andPresident would like us to believe that we are in arecovery but few realistic business owners believe that.I had an experience that really made me think abouthow tough times are and how lucky I am and afterreading my editorial I want all of you to think whatyou would have done if you were in my shoes, andsend me your replies to be printed...

I have a patient, we will call Mark. I first met Markover 20 years ago – he had been a long time patient ofRobert Garfield before me, if you don't know whothat is then you are way too young. Mark had not beento my office in over 5 years as he was living andworking in Long Beach. Mark called me on my oncallline the other week. He left a message telling me thathe had fallen on very hard times and knew that he hada 4 tooth all gold bridge (28-31) done by Dr. Garfield25 years ago. Mark asked if I would extract the bridgeand give it to him so that he could sell the gold to helphimself out during these very tough times. I ask all ofyou, what would you have done?

Next month I will publish some of your answers andcomments, and until then please realize that no matterhow bad business is and how expensive life hasbecome, just how lucky you really are.

Before I go on with my formalPresident’s message I want to announce

that at the last Board meeting our “YoungAO Group” discussed the desires thatyounger AO members, as well as potentialmembers, have with regards to CE lectures.We are now asking our younger membersto present us with a list of topics theywould like to hear so that we can provide that list to our ProgramChairman Mitch Levitt. Feel free to contact Mitch. Also, Marc and Bradare to be congratulated and commended for putting on a very HIGHLY(financial) successful Nate Styrt seminar.

After a vacation from last month’s president’s message I thought I wouldwrite about something that, I think, needs to be said. There used to bea commercial for Oldsmobile that ended by saying “it’s not yourgrandfather’s Oldsmobile anymore”. Needless to say their message was toget the younger generation to view Oldsmobiles in a more modern way,not the dull designs of the past.

Well, that same attitude needs to be expressed for Alpha Omega. Timeshave changed, dentistry has changed and new challenges await. No onewould deny that the world has certainly been altered, with the MiddleEast, Egypt and Libya being prime examples and now the horrible eventsthat occurred in Japan. Israel immediately sent a huge medical team tohelp with that disaster.

Last month I had the privilege to attend the very first award dedicationof the Bill and Ruth Frank humanitarian award at the Braemar CountryClub in the valley. Nanette and Max Cutler were the recipients and itwas a wonderful evening for all of those who attended. The guest speakerwas Rabbi Stewart Vogel, who spoke about the changing faces of Judaismand whether or not our children or children’s children will still seethemselves as Jewish. In other words, exactly what type of exposure doJewish children need to continue to see themselves as Jews? It was anexcellent presentation and gave all those who attended plenty of food forthought.

I would like to take this opportunity to turn the rabbi’s topic around andask the very same question about the future of Alpha Omega. Whatchanges do we need to make in the fraternity so that we continue tostimulate young dentists to join while also expressing Jewish tradition?

First, in my humble opinion, we need to see ourselves from a moreglobal perspective. Gone are the days of only focusing on ourselves. If weare going to befriend and nurture undergraduate students for what itmeans to be good dentists as well as philanthropist then we need to put

The Dr. Nathan A. Styrt seminar committee would like to thank everyone who attended themeeting on March 16, 2011. The Dr. Nathan A. Styrt Excellence in Dentistry seminar is the local

chapters’ major fund-raiser for the year. Dr. Ruiz’s lecture was extremely well received.

He spoke about how all ceramic full coverage restorations and minimally invasive onlays are healthierfor patients and more predictable and enjoyable for the dentist. We were fortunate to have a plethoraof exhibitors present. Many of these companies have been supportive of Alpha Omega year after year.The Olympic Collection is an excellent venue for such a meeting and we look forward to returningthere for years to come.

our money where our mouths are. Our membership needs to reflect a global dental society and offer the opportunityfor non-Jews to participate in our traditions. Just consider the fact that many Jews have enjoyed the Christmas seasonand other non-Jewish religious traditions. To echo the words of Dennis Prager, we celebrate a friend’s birthday but it’snot our birthday. When you think about it, many of our Jewish traditions are mirrored in other religions anyway. AsI write this message, anti-Semitism is climbing to a fevered pitch in Greece and I think you would all agree, no religionshould have to tolerate bigotry either here or abroad. So, no conflict there!

Our fraternity gives to many different causes and some of them are not completely Jewish in nature. We as Jews havecomplete freedom to give as we see fit and non-Jewish members should be made to feel the same way. Recently, theLos Angeles Times had an article written by Nomi Morris about Muslim and Jewish women who started a cousins clubcalled “The Jewish Muslim Woman’s Group.” There are 15 active members who celebrate each others traditions. Oneof the members said “I felt so blessed that I have made such dear friends. It feels like sisters coming into my house”.They really all see themselves as nurturing mothers.

So, my New Year message is easy, the changing world stage has made it clearer for me. We had better change ourapproach and stop seeing each other as distinct groups. Jews and non-Jews alike, we need to see our common ground.We are, after all, striving for the same things but are driving different cars. I’ll take you for a ride in my car if you takeme for a drive in yours. Happy New Year to all!
