As the Chairman, I am totally overwhelmed by the response received for ADF 2019. Today, I present the official dossier of the Festival as a heartfelt gift for all the messages of appreciation I have been receiving from all over the country for ‘Amaravati Design Festival’ which had created a distinct ethos and provided a distinctive platform for the Architects and the students at the same time.

This dossier is also a testament to the love showered on me and my team from everyone who had graced our grand event. I am incredibly thankful to all the Sponsors and the Exhibitors who helped us tap potential business opportunity for quality-conscious giants & leaders in the material industry in-sync with the Design fraternity. With ‘Celebrating Craft in Design’ as its honest motive, we had together initiated a humble beginning to attract the best design minds from across the globe to Amaravati. As an Architect, I feel privileged to share that this was the initial step to being recognized as an International Architecture and Interior Design Festival in South India.

This dossier also celebrates the influential spirit of professionalism and knowledge, which was evident throughout the Festival. As I turn nostalgic, I want to appreciate the enthusiasm of students who had participated in workshops mentored by an exceptional team of Architects and Designers, which had helped the students find their true calling. I want to thank all the Speakers and the Panelists for sharing their intellect with the audience and appreciate their professional approach towards the same. A special thanks to all the Industry Leaders and Pioneers who have displayed their best products.

Finally, I would like to thank IIID and its Chapters across the country who had supported our honest initiative. My team of IIID Amaravati has been my pillar of support throughout the planning and execution of ADF 2019, and I extend my unconditional gratitude to all my team members.

As I conclude to share my experience, I recall the dazzling array of events at ADF 2019 which enthralled the audience of all age groups from all the walks of life, which continues to inspire me till date! Thus, I make a sincere wish for future ADFs.

“May the spirit of Design prevail forever.”

Amaravati Design Festival is my honest tribute to my Janmabhoomi as I strive to contribute to the revolution of Design in India.

ADF 2019 was the first step for ‘Amaravati Design Festival’ to being recognized as an International Architecture and Interior Design Festival in South India. The six months of hard work by our team lead us to conduct the first of its kind International Design Festival successfully.

I want to thank the committee of IIID Amaravati who believed in an idea and converted it into a reality. I appreciate the team spirit of IIID Amaravati, which kept us going ahead. I believe that ADF 2019 was an honest endeavor towards ASR (Architect Social Responsibility) as I respect the following quote: “While food nourishes the body, Art nourishes the soul.”

ADF 2019 was just a beginning. We promise that many more ADFs will follow in the future, making Amaravati a true global city. This dossier is a tribute to all our well-wishers of ADF 2019.

In India, design is booming. As we transition to an innovation-fuelled economy, the driving force in the next phase of Indian development will be the imaginative and creative capacity of its people. IIID's Amaravati Design Festival brings together the new architects & designers of the global economic landscape who apply their imagination, creativity and knowledge to generate new ideas and create new value. Multi-dimensional creativity, artistic creativity, business entrepreneurship and technological innovation, all of which, define the new currency of success merge as ONE in this Mega Festival of Design & Construction Industry.

Design interacts with a variety of factors ranging from aesthetics to functionality, craft traditions to high technology, needs of local markets to the requirements of globalisation. This makes the knowledge domain of design vast and complicated. The changing profile of the Indian economy and its growing manufacturing and vibrant service sector now require more and more design inputs than ever to remain competitive.

India's heritage as a civilisation, high level of diversity of cultures, religions, festivals, festivities, rituals, practises, visual icons, vernacular languages, ethnic food, fashions, and multitude of colours make it possible for design to play a critical role unlike in other countries. India has a huge creative talent pool. This makes it possible for India to become a major "Creative Outsourcing Hub." Let us all be a part and contribute to this process of creating a new, vibrant India with our Design Interventions.

I wish the IIID Amravati Team and the ADF a grand success.

Amravati Design Festival turned out to be an Epoch-making event by IIID Amravati Regional Chapter for the brand-new capital city of Andhra Pradesh. This will undoubtedly start a trend of good design in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a matter of pride, indeed for IIID as it was conceived and hosted by the youngest centre of our organization. AR. Pavan Suryadevara, the Founder Chairman and his entire team, worked hard with a passion for making this festival the most successful trade event in South India.

I was impressed with the efforts of the senior mentors who had traveled from across the border to guide the students through workshops. This must have been the most memorable event for the students to cherish for their lifetime. The installation by Peter Rich at the venue was an excellent experience. The event has brought laurels for IIID and has made its presence felt with a significant impact. Getting support from the State Government was a great achievement too. I must say, we as an organization are better-placed post ADF, not only in Andhra Pradesh but across the nation.

I must appreciate the support from our Trade Fraternity and extend my gratitude to the then Chief Minister Mr. Chandrababu Naidu for his gracious support. I would also like to appreciate the efforts of my youngest team, led by AR. Pavan Suryadevara for the wonderful event and AR. Sudhir Reddy for the student workshops.

This display translates a consequence of dialogue and provocation between a Curator and an Architect. Imaginary and Real Architectural landscapes were depicted. Some of the drawings described structures, which could be a hundred and fifty thousand years old where the buildings end up as fossils. The power of intuition could be easily felt by the delegates who were left speechless by the depth of the drawings on display.

Ar. Peter Rich had previously showcased this work at Venice Biennale, 2018.

A collaborative effort of Sandeep Sangaru and Shivani Dhar, both well-known for their creative works, depicted Culture and Art by incorporating light into the Design through their installation. The spacious and poetic display left the audience spellbound. The traditional touch was evident in the Design, and it was successful in bringing a sense of curiosity among the delegates, including the youngsters. Sandeep and Shivani were successful in bringing together traditional knowledge and skills in crafts with Design and Technology, making objects of daily use invaluable, accessible, and enjoyable.

mENtOR’S REFlECtiONAmaravati Design Festival, the brainchild of IIID, AMARAVATI, is a welcome departure from the established conventions of hosting design events and has successfully forged a collaboration between various stakeholders in the design industry, the designer fraternity both regional and pan India, the student community from architecture, interior and product design streams, the product specialists and most importantly the general public.

With eminent architect Peter Rich, from Johannesburg gracing the occasion, his wonderful Venice Bienalle exhibit, and his inspiring talk will remain etched in the memory of all delegates. One and all overwhelmingly received the student workshops conceived and curated by Prof Surya Kakani, Dean, School of Planning and Architecture, CEPT, Ahmedabad. The workshops were supported by a team of eminent architects across India who engaged with over 150 design student delegates.

Sandeep Sangaru & Shivani Dhar’s exhibit, followed by their talk and tholubommalata performance enthralled the audience. Architect Bijoy Ramachandran’s exhibit of drawings provided insight into the nature of his architectural practice. The exhibit of works by the design professionals and students of the region, including the exhibit of student works by NID, Vijayawada introduced to the visiting delegates and general public the vibrant design culture of the region.

The design festival stands out for bringing to one platform speakers from diverse design disciplines, regional to pan India. It was well complimented by either an introduction to them through an exhibit of their works or engagement with students through various design workshops. It was a great pleasure to be a part of an exceptionally well-organized Amaravati Design Festival. I am looking forward to many more such events from IIID, Amaravati.

FORERuNNER'S imPRESSiON ABOUT ADF

Newest IIID Centre on the block Amravati has its founder-chairman, Pavan Suryadevara, a dynamic and a silent performer. I remember my visit to Amaravati just before the ADF. I was deputed from IIID HO to visit Amaravati & see the progress of the event's planning. I remember my visit to the convention center, which was designed as the venue by Pavan himself. The whole space planning was done meticulously. The flow of the event was well planned. Our treasurer, Mr. Sameer Joshi, who is also the mentor of Amaravati, could not make it at the last moment. It was my first visit to Amaravati & I have to ensure that this major event of IIID Amravati, the ADF was smooth & hassle-free. Right from the budget, the financial aspect and the flow of the event, everything was discussed & I found the humongous effort of almost six months in planning of the event. ADF went extremely well and established IIID as a brand in the fraternity of Amravati. Being the parent center, IIID Hyderabad played a proactive role in the success of ADF. I wish Pavan and his team all the best for 2019-21. I am sure Amaravati will reach newer heights under his capable leadership.

manish Kumat | Ex. National Hon. Secretary, IIID. Chairman, National Convention, IIID. Founder Chairman, Indore, IIID.

I want to congratulate the team of IIID Amaravati Regional Center under the leadership of Ar. Pavan Suryadevara for the commendable job done at ADF in February 2019. From being on the committee of IIID Hyderabad Regional Chapter to forming the center at Amaravati through HRC's mentorship, Ar. Pavan has gracefully carried and continued the legacy of its Mentor Chapter. The effort bore fruit as ADF on lines of Showcase & InsiderX, which had workshops for students. The highlights of ADF were the installations by Ar. Peter Rich & Product Designer, Sandeep Sangaru. The other highlights included the specially curated workshops by Ar. Sudhir Reddy from Hyderabad and Ar. Surya Kakani from Ahmedabad. IIID HRC always supports IIID Amaravati Center in their initiatives when required and requested. May the center continue to grow in leaps and bounds!

Ar. Aparna bidarkar | Immediate Past Chairperson, IIID HRC

ADF is a celebration of the design itself. The great challenge was getting designers and people who have never thought much about design while they come together and experience how creative the design process itself is. ADF took up this challenge and succeeded with flying colors. A lot of the visitors were Architects, Interior Designers, Students, and the design-conscious, but I'm intrigued by the impact the festival made on the non-design audience. Design is such an important part of life and of the economy. It is very important for people to know about it and enjoy the same. Talks, Workshops, International exhibits, Expo, and even food was written with delicious design all over. Congratulations Pavan, team ADF and IIID Amaravati. You just created history.

Ar. Aditya Kambhatla | IPC - IIID Vizag

Amaravati Design Festival was a beautiful reflection of the evolution of Indian Interior Design. I was impressed by the vibrancy, positive energy, and huge 'design buzz' created by sharing of knowledge and ideas by Indian and International speakers. It was heartening to see students working late night on high-quality Design workshops. It indicated that ADF achieved its objectives. Congratulations to IIID Amaravati for a hugely successful event!

Ar. Sameer Joshi | Ex. National Treasurer, IIID. Mentor, IIID Amaravati

The initiative ADF is a great move in terms of creating opportunities for many people in their profession. This created a platform for students, fraternity, and related to showcase their talent. A great exposure to all the people involved directly, indirectly, or involved with the industry. Such initiatives are required as they help in setting up a culture.

Ar. V V Rao | Genesis Planners

Congratulations, Team ADF..!! Amaravati Design Festival is a successful attempt in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Learning is a non-stop process of life, especially in design and creative field. The attempt brought together the Interior design and Architectural professionals, students from various Design schools through workshops and presentations. It was nice to see the renowned International and National speakers presenting their works, talking in panel discussions, helping many learning minds. Showcase Exhibition connecting Trade fraternity with design professionals and exposure to various new materials and products was very well appreciated by not only the Designers but also benefited the common end-user.

FORERuNNER'S imPRESSiON ABOUT ADF

Amaravati design festival.... was a platform for Celebration of Design. Bringing together Professionals, Students, Brands with so much of collaboration and collective efforts to put up a great show for the design fraternity. The man behind the show Ar. Pavan Suryadevara and his team has showed what can be achieved if one decides to. ADF has become a benchmark of a festival for the design fraternity with so much of interactive brain storming sessions, value adding panel discussions and student grooming. Looking forward to more of it. Best wishes to the family of Amaravati Design Festival.

Ar. Prarthana Nangia | Immediate Past Chairperson, IIID Nagpur

ADF was a true amalgamation of Design and Fest where Design, in both, its process and its manifestation, was celebrated. And how ! For a limited member team, as a Centre for IIID, Amaravati, under the leadership of Pavan Suryadevra and his frugal but resourceful team, managed to put a massive show together. International Designers, Student Workshops. Showcase and InsiderX Exhibitions, Local Designers of National Repute, Parallel Discussions and local governing bodies' support constituted largely. To compliment all of this, impeccable logistics, hospitality, lodging and boarding added the phillip that an event of this scale would present for itself. We see ADF grow into a formidable property for Amravati as much as it is poised to become an event the Design Fraternity would look forward to.

id. Niraj Shah | Immediate Past Chairperson, IIID Ahemadabad

ADF marked a great initiative on knowledge sharing and showcasing of design ideas exploration for a Greenfield urban development. The overwhelming support it succeeded in garnering attendance of the cross sectional design fraternity and stake holders on one platform is greatly commendable. The thought provoking sessions, debates and display have not only enriched larger design community but have also demonstrated the power of design for better world to even non designers attending it. I congratulate IIID Amravati Chairperson Pavan Suryadevra, ADF and IIID Amravati team for such a humongous task achieved which surely shows their commitment and dedicated hard work for bringing change in people’s life through design.

Ar. tejal Rajput | Immediate Past Chairperson, IIID Bharuch

ADF is a unique event. It’s a wonderful combination of the showcase, workshops, and knowledge series. An overwhelming response from the fraternity, students, and traders makes it a great success. I wish all the best to Ar. Pavan Suryadevara for ADF.

Peter strives to create spaces that are meaningful, moving, and uplifting for all who occupy them. He has received honors from FAIA, RIBA, and Cambridge for his work. His work is a testament to a lifetime commitment to the creation of a unique African Architecture that he learned from the spatial and the aesthetic elements of the indigenous tribal settlements. Peter’s hand-drawings and sketches were showcased at the venice Biennale under the title landscape as Architecture and Architecture as landscape.

Peter Rich’s Architecture has meaning, relevance, and significant social impact. Describing himself as the '60s kid, he shared that the difference in language and culture interests him. He started his talk by expressing gratitude to the indigenous people of Africa. He shared his global work, the major part of it being the lifetime creation of unique and sustainable Architecture that he learned from the spatial and aesthetic elements of local indigenous settlements in Africa. In his clarion call for change, he shared that Architects should use their skills for the broader cross-section of the society while they also work for wealthy clients. The audience was mesmerized by his dedication and compassionate heart, which was evident in his robust works showcased on the screen. He appreciated the students of Amaravati and their drive to learn. He emphasized again and again that ‘drawing becomes the building’ and it can reach the subconscious mind.

The Curator and Architect should be in sync when they work together while paying homage to the space around the drawings when they are being exhibited. Peter Rich shared the pictures of his drawings with the audience. He believes that love and persistence can make anyone win over a lot of odds, including the struggle to convince anyone going against their architectural intellect. The existing Culture should be respected while being aware of the contemporary Designs, he shared. Language and Culture go hand in hand, and a single idea can inspire another idea as per him.

In his conclusion, he wanted Architects to look at the ‘DNA’ of their own identities and advised them to be Continuous Learners as he shared his unique principle of R.I.C.H where he shared that an individual himself is responsible for creating his happiness and for creating beautiful spaces for people. Why? Because he believes that it is Humanity which makes all the difference.

Prof. Surya Kakani completed his Architecture from School of Architecture, Vidyanagar and Masters in Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been a visiting faculty/critic at various institutes and considers these interactions as extremely important in forming the course of the practice at Kakani Associates where the endeavor is on giving meaning to working in the present day context of resources and their appropriate use. The practice located at Ahmedabad nurtured long years of close association and collaboration with CEPT. Recognizing Surya Kakani’s contribution to Architectural practice and continued collaboration with Academia, he was appointed as the Dean, Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University in April 2017.

Surya Kakani appreciated the ADF 2019 for bringing students and professionals under the same roof. He believes that ‘Change is inevitable’ and keeps us going ahead. Dean, Faculty of Architecture, CEPT, Ahmedabad, Surya Kakani put forth critical questions to the practicing Architects as he shared many of his works under Kakani Associates, founded by him. The questions included:

- How do we reinvent: Courts, Verandahs, and Terraces?

- Can we not only have: Thick outer shells with soft insides?

- Can we explore?

- Which construction methodologies allow more social equity?

- Can we use materials that have less embodied energy?

The audience appreciated his unique format of sharing previous works as ‘ Old and New’ pictures. Having practiced Architecture for the last two decades, he had shared the intricate details of his major National projects, which inspired the aspiring Architects and Designers. He had been trying to find ways, means, and methods that would help create and build spaces that address particular realities of glare, heat, humidity, and ventilation. His other areas of focus included:

- Material Innovation and Skill Transferability

- Environmental Engineering as Craft

In the end, he thanked the organizers of ADF 2019 for giving him an opportunity to speak.

Being the principle Architect behind Amaravati’s Govern-ment Complex, he believes in having a sustainable vision. The unique point is that natural vegetation is also respected in this plan. One and all appreciated the concept of Influential Planning. In his message to the Architects, he requested them to respect the needs of their clients. Describing the Government Complex plan of 7.5 km across 950 acres, he reiterated the fact that constant innovation is being considered in the Masterplan and that the images of the current projects in media are not the direct depiction of the contemporary design. The audience was awestruck by his presentation on the futuristic design of the newest capital which is being built with a sustainable approach.

Another unique aspect of his plan is that it will be connecting all the State departments in the Secretariat, making it easy for the people to commute from one section to another. The audience applauded his dedication while he was sharing the details of the future’s capital. The high court in Amaravati shall be one of the largest in the country, he stated. Most of the buildings will be accessible to the general public, making Amaravati a genuine People’s Capital, he said.

He interacted with the audience in detail and specifically urged the youngsters to ask him questions. He answered all the questions in detail, being patient on the stage. In his conclusion, he thanked IIID Amaravati and appreciated the initiative to bring International recognition to the capital.

Our focus is on upholding the highest standards which has helped us to fulfil consumer requirements with products that are truly ahead of the competition. Continuing with this tradition, Somany boasts of two patents as a result of its intensive research namely VC and Slip-Shield tiles.

The revolutionary VC technology solves a very common issues with tiled surfaces, which is abrasion upon long-term use. It shields the tile against weathering – wear and tear, stains and scratches, keeping it fresh and new as ever. These tiles are available in silky matt finishes to bring absolute perfection in terms of beauty and aesthetics.

The slip-shield tiles come in varied designs that offer a high co-efficient of friction even in wet condition to avoid slippage. Also, these tiles do not allow dirt to accumulate on the surface.

All our innovations and launches are based on extensive research with benefits aptly suited to every consumer need.

Manufacturing Setup at Somany

We started with a humble beginning in 1969 with our first plant in Kassar (Haryana) and subsequently in Kadi (Gujarat) followed by joint venture plants, generating a total production capacity of 60 million square meters annually.

We have a dedicated marketing team led by Sr. GM – Mrs. Charu Malhotra who has ensured that Somany maintains a positive Brand Development Index (BDI) throughout the past few years via various successful branding initiatives.

Tile Master – A unique CSR Initiative

In order to build the capabilities of the masons and tile-layers in India, Somany Ceramics has introduced a unique CSR initiative – The Somany Tile Master Program. This program focuses on skill up-gradation among masons who are from the lower income group in order to enhance their tile-laying skills through proper training. The program aims at empowering the masons with improved tile-laying abilities which will not only help them achieve better results and improve productivity in an efficient manner, but also help them climb the economic ladder. This program aims at providing practical knowledge to the tillers and masons to perfect their art. With more than 70% of the course hours dedicated to practical hands-on training with the usage of patented tools, the course allows the participants to achieve and develop the professional skills necessary to perform various tasks of tile-laying efficiently.
