where did that off season go?p;,<eur football returns today and everyone from the new club president to the longest servingli,b secretary appears to be genuinely excited about the return to our lives of the game we all

the planning has been done. All the registrations and accreditations have been completed1T 1 now it is over to the teams that make up our great Association to begin competing on a(;,, ~r basis to see which four teams in each section will earn the right to playoff for the righ tf prumier during the three week finals series that will be played this year . There is no doub ti,,i the path ahead will be full of hurdles - injuries to key players, some suspensions (few weoi ;d , some surprise upsets and other situations that make the goal of becoming premier aalxs challenge ahead of everyone .

ours truly will be missing for part of the season as my wife and I are both taking leave from work to travel overseas . Atie ume of writing we intend to travel through Turkey (these plans are under review given the situation in that neck of theods) followed by a time in Greece . Whilst away this column will feature "guest writers" - Bruce McTaggart (the new VAFA,c,ident), Nick Bourke (the new chairman of the VAFA Executive and senior representative coach), John Bell (chairman ofe Football Programs Committee, which incorporates the Permit and Reinstatement Committee) and for the final week of,y absence Brian Goodman (the new VAFA Umpires' Adviser) .ie VAFA had a wonderful Season Launch on March 31st at Crown which included the traditional presidents, secretariesn! members of all clubs being in attendance, special guests from various groups supporting the VAFA and also featured aornderful guest speaker (3AW's Ross Stevenson) and entertainer Mike Brady (of "Up There Cazaly" fame) . One absentee wasu own Peter Harris, who has had a health scare in recent times but seems certain to be back into it as of this weekend .tte it easy Pete, for we need you around contributing for many years yet .ne of the big appointments during the off-season was that of Brian Goodman as our Umpires' Adviser. We were of the beliefat umpiring was in need of "re-invigorating" and, although it is only the pre-season that has been completed, it seems thatere-invigoration" process is taking effect withwell-organised, enjoyable and meaningful training sessions taking place, aalthy team of umpire observers in place, revamped feedback sheets in place which will allow Brian to develop umpires, ccl on constructive feedback received from coaches, observers and advisers .an is also of the view, which is supported by the Executive, that we will endeavour to provide quality rather than quantityc,ir matches - umpires who have applied to be registered as a VAFA umpire for 2004 which has been approved only if the3 ;;ire has attended training, coaching or interview sessions as required by the Adviser and his panel .e funetio ' s of the Executive Committee (the group which has the overall responsibility of running VAFA) and the

>,~ :nistration (the group which implements programs according to the Executive Committee) has been streamlined and willr: ite with more efficiency. The eighteen previous sub-committees have been consolidated into four Main Committees!'i make decisions which have to be ratified by the Executive when it meets . This process means that the Executive

-: crns itself with ratifying decisions recommended to it as we ll as concentrating on long term visions for the VAFA~ r.,tition .

New season, new look comp and for th . : cribe,a new countryas the land of televise -T darts,World's Strongest Women contests and DavidBrent fades into distant memory .Football, it's good to have you back! Predictionsmean zip but I've been roaming the hills, sniffing about and I've come up with a semiserious precis of how I see 2004 unfolding . . .Premiers : HaileyburyThree top shelf ROC Football club recruitspropelled the Bloods from also-rans to seriouscontenders last year. Stewart Loewe and BrettO'Farrell complemented the mix before theteam imploded in the i st Semi . Well, considerthese additions for 2004 . A former state rover(Laz Siapantas), a former state captain (MarkSeccull) a former B&F (Sam Langford Jones) aformer captain(Adam Hilton), a former AFL andSAFL defender (Paul Geister) a VFL ruckman(Steven Rode) and some quality suburbanpickups in Adam Svarc and Ben Waite. Haveflattered to deceive in years past but with a listlike this, surely their time has come .Runners Up: Xavs

Plenty of people in VAFA circles were scratchingtheir heads at how a team with so many "nonames" could engineer a Grand final vrin but asthe old saying goes, "nothing succeeds likesuccess" . Given that Xavier College seem tohave won the last 85 APS premierships, theconnection with Barker's Rd is integral and thekids coming through rarely disappoint .Watch out for Dan Rush, a gargantuanyoungster who kicked buckets of goals in lastyear's APS comp, along with a couple of likelylads James Mortensen and Sam Sheerly, JohnBowen has retired with 7 senior premiershipmedallions in the cabinet and Travis Ruyg isstill in London but they still look cherry ripe topush Haileybury all the way .3rd: ScotchStill smarting from letting last year's

Preliminary final slip away, the Cardinals once

again boast a line up that ornes class ancl poise .

The estimable ~wizard Luke

Hawkins takes

centre stage, alongwith a band of

cameos that includes a Woodrow medallist(Crow), three ex AFL players (Dennis,Finniochaio & Kitchen) and a host of stateplayers. Great team, proud club, but can theyshake off the Preliminary Final jitters?4th: TrinitySpeaking of smarting, OT's have more reason

than most to shake their heads after being

squeezed out of the finals despite abarnstorming finish to last year's season

against St Bernards. Always recruit well andalways tough to beat at home but seem forever

destined t obook their end of season trip early . Still, anyline up that boasts Ramsden, Cultrera andReynolds is pretty appetizing and some big preseason scalps indicates finals footy may finallybe on the menu .5th: DeLaPremiership coach Tony Miller sat down for a

Chicken Parma and a Hahn Premium Light last

October when he got a tap on the shoulder."Sony Tone but you're out the door old son" .Extraordinary goings on indeed but theappointment of Mark Lowe is indicative of a

more ruthless regime at De La Once again, somuch rests on the narrow shoulders of Ben

lvlannriix, whose game in last year's B Grade GF(13 marks 4 goals 7, two out on the full)beggared belief. With his pale skin, spindly

frame and nonchalant air, he cuts a less thanimposing igure but when the light is switched

on, there is no more deadly player in the comp .Could surprise a few this year.

6th:Polo tournaments, lab explosions, HECSprotests, Genetics and Bio3iversity exams, midwPelr benders, sti,dent exchanges to Botswana;

e obsta-les f?cc1 by Uni are surely unique in

Victorian football . Have lost two very goodplayers in Rob Wilkie and Liam Ryan to furtherstudy though they pick up Mark Paterson fromPort Melbourne, Jesse Brooke from Ainsley andJames Scambler from Coburg . Watch for themlater in the season .7th: OM sWhat on earth do you say about OMs? Fumbleabout like a team of dithering dingbats for thebetter part of 2003 and appear destined for BGrade . Suddenly Daffy, Hazell, Hicks and coturn up the wick the two eventual grandfinalists are blown off the park and OMs live tosee another year of top tier action . On theirday, they're capable of winning an A Grade flagby ten goals but we've been saying that fordecades. . .8th StBernardsDeep breath . Tim Harvey's gone to Box Hill,Dan Jordan and Danny Byrne to Geelong. Tocompound the loss of arguably the three mostdynamic players in the VAFA, state playerShaun Neeson has flown the coup, DavidJames and Michael Hooper are VFL bound andpremiership CHB Tait Wilkinson has gonebackpacking! Yes, some of these guys may filterback into the side during the year, yes the flowon effect from reserves and unders flags will besignificant and yes, pre season wins over EastRingwood and North Heidelberg are goodpointers but the cream's gone and the dreammay be over.9th MarcellinAndrew Treganowan has finally hung up theboots to tend to his University Hotel in Lygon Stwhile lynchpins Dave Waters and Gion Romain

have caught the travel bug . Jumped out of theblocks last April with a string of wins, includingof 59 point thumping of Xavs but their seasonpetered out miserably. With no real additions toget too excited about, expect 2004 to continuein a similar vein .10th WhitefriarsIf you thought Benny Mannix was enigmatic, hehas nothing on his older brother Pat, who takesover the reigns at Friar Park after a decoratedand flamboyant playing career. He's inherited atough and honest team that have galvanisedand clambered their way up the grades butthey'll struggle with the class and tempo of AGrade and will have problems winning west ofWobbies World .Today's selectionsHaileybury, DeLa, Trinity, Oms and XavsEnjoy your day and as Frank Costanza said onthe eve of Festivus. . Welcome back to Amateur Football, andwelcome to 2004 . All the tough work and hardyards from January through to April comes tofruition today as the ball is bounced tocommence another season of good football .Good luck to all involved may the games asalways be played in true VAFA Spirit.PREDICTIONSSt Kevins. Still smarting from their relegationSkevvies have worked very hard in the offseason to endeavour to minimise their stay in BSection to one year. David Murray and TonyMiller make a pretty formidable Coachingcombination, both know the workings of BSection pretty well . Jarred Malloy, JohnRombotis, and Damien Ryan all fully fit willmake life difficult for all opposition, while MattyLucas and Robin Bowles have been trairring thehouse down which all augers well for St Kevins. Will definitely be thereabouts at the businessend of the season.Old Ivanhoe. Relegated with St Kevins the Hoeswill also be looking to make a big impression onthe Section this year. Gerard Sholly returns tothe Coaching position and will be looking for abig year from his young side. Loss of theexperienced Young and Donaldson will hurt butit is only Round 1 and they could be back . JohnStevens will play and will have his usual impact .Tough to see where they will finish at this stageso keep them safe .Old Essendon . A terrific Home and Awayseason in 2003, and then a disappointing finalseries saw the Grammar Boys have their flame

extinguished in straight sets . They are veryresilient and will bounce back. Frank Dunelland the boys have been smarting over summer

and can't wait to get back on the track, I believethey have added a bit of height to their side so

this coupled with their running ability seesthem in my Top 4 .

Old B righton . Again under the tutelage ofJarred O'Neill, the Tonners despite plenty of

injuries were prettygood last year. Ibelieve they have Inot set the world on ~--- -- .'fire with thei rpractise match form so far, but really we shouldnot write too much into that . They are youngand enthusiastic and will be looking to go thatstep further in 2004 .M azenod . Mike McArthur-Allen is a great pickup for the Nodders . His experience and

knowledge of Amateur Football will be a greatbonus for his young charges . May take them awhile to get going as they adapt to Mike's gameplan, but look out for a bold showing from this

unit, especially in the second half of the season .St Bedes Mentone-Tigers . Mark my words anyside coached by Russel Barnes will always havea dip . The Tigers did very well in 03 andconsolidated their position in the Section. Theywill be looking to improve on that and make the

finals in 2004 . The influx of some of the Under

19 Premiership players will help their cause, along with the experience of the Wintle Bros and

Moose McCraw to me the Tigers are a big chanceof some finals action .Old Paradians. My old school have been in thewilderness a bit in the last couple of yearscaused by an horrific injury run to their betterplayers. Sam Assetta returns to the fray andfinds his club to me anyway at the crossroads .The young guys have to stand up to ease theworkload on Chook and Pete Brabender and ifthey can with Sam's guidance the Purple andGreens could be the surprise packet .North Old Boys . A disappointing 2003 findsNOB'S in a similar position to Parade . GarryFoulds has had them working hard over thesummer, the return of some past players andthe influx of some new blood will certainly help, their cause, and if the remain injury free couldreally test their more fancied opponents.Beauffiaris . Back up to have another crack at B

Page 11: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2004

Section . The Sharks will certainly be looking toconsolidate their position. Mick Lovejoy gets thechance to Coach in his own right which is agood thing for Beauy, as he is very astute . Theloss of Brayden Haynes will not help the causebut this could be offset by the luxury of a fullyfit Murray Pitts . Not to be taken lightlyespecially at home .

Coll egians . Like Beauy have come up a Gradeand will be looking for a good season . Lookedgood against the Tigers in a practise match acouple of weeks ago. Pat Hawkins has managedto keep the majority of last years list togetherand has added a couple to it which will makethe Lions a pretty competitive unit . Will reservejudgement until a few Rounds in to the seasonproper.PREV IEWAlways difficult to tip winners in Round 1 a

scribe is really on a hiding to nothing here . So

with no confidence at all here goes ;

The battle between the Master and the

Apprentice takes place at Brindisi Street today

as the Tigers welcome Mazenod . Mike and

Russell will be as keen as mustard to get one

over each other here . I think that at home in

front of a large crowd to witness the opening ofthe Corboy Pavilion that the Tigers will prevail

albeit by a narrow margin. And I look forward to

talking to both Coaches on air tomorrow

morning .Old Brighton make the long terk out North to

renew acquaintances with Old Ivanhoe. Sawthe Hoes a fortnight ago where they ran out of a

bit of puff at the end . I'm sure Shols would have

worked on that in the ensuing weeks . Home

ground advantage is a huge bonus here and thissways me to go with Old Ivanhoe.

Old Paradians welcome Old Essendon to theGarvey Oval in what will be a big test for both

sides. Have Parade improved, are the GrammarBoys over the disappointment of September . Allwill be revealed and answered tody . Round 1 noupsets tips or results predicted by me here itsthe visitors to win purely based on 2003 formEeaumaris unveil their Premiership Flag infront of what is sure to be a large parochialcrowd, and then tackle the resurgent St Kevins. The Sharks are incredibly hard to beat at OakStreet and rarely lose their, but I'm tipping thattoady will be one of those occasions as theSkevvies will be primed and looking the starttheir 2004 season on a high .Final game of the Round should be a beauty .

Both sides are evenly matched and have plenty

of skilful players . Home ground advantage does

not mean much here as Collegians know how to

win at the Gillon. Hard to predict the result but

will go with the Lions because of the threatposed by Jono Dixon in the Lions forward line .

SUCCESSFUL CThe most impressive coaches that I havebeen privileged to work alongsidedeliberately educate their players towardsindependence rather dependence. Suchcoaches universally have a healthy respectfor themselves and their players ; pridethemselves on clarity of decision making intimes of pressure ; and actively work at beinga sensitive listener and encourager to allpeople involved at the club .

Its A Challenging TaskSuccessful coaches appreciate the need to

constantly entertain new ideas, upgrade

their knowledge of the sport and arrive atthe contest thoroughly prepared .Overwhelmingly, their communicationalskills are exceptional . From my experiencethe best coaches tend to be honest, andrather than overburdening players with

extensive information, they recognise thevalue of BRIEF, SUCCINCT and RELEVANTmessages/themes . Appreciating the impact

high arousal and adrenalin levels have uponone's memory and concentration capacities,

the skilled coach utilises a variety of tools(eg videos, handouts, diagrams, interactive

player groups, respected and knowledgeablefootball staff to extract maximum

effectiveness from the communicationprocess .

Individualising messages and spending

quality one-on-one time with players prior to

the game also provides coach and playerwith the opportunity to clarify any concerns

in a private and personal manner. Suchdiscussions are also excellent forums forcoaches to highlight their faith and trust in

the player to do the specific role designated

and can provide avenues for encouragementto take ,,!ace .

A .F.C. V.A.F.A .

"Your Coaches' Association "

Above all, aim not to clutter the playersminds rather clear their minds; PREPARETHOROUGHLY, WELCOME QUESTIONSand AIM TO DO BETTER with each week'scoaching opportunity .

E2E .1 . Aggressive, unapproachable coaches

produce anxious, hostile and frustratedplayers .

2 . Provide individuals with specific

feedback, which encourages them todevelop their abilities futher.

3. Understand that non verbalcommunication often has greater impactthan what is said to the player .

4. When a player believes that you have

faith their abilities, they rarely let youdown.

5. Encourage, encourage, encourage .

6 . Spend two minutes listening for every

minute talking.

7 . Players will only listen if they feel youcare about them .

8 . Don't overload with information - keep it

brief, be very clear as to what it is that

you expect and provide adequateamount of time for questions and

interactions to occur.

9 . One-on-one discussions and smallplayer groups (ie . forwards, backs,rucks/rovers) are very effective tools formore detailed explanations.

10 . Lead by example - never belittle, ridiculeor humiliate individuals publicly . Alwaysdemonstrate self - discipline and provide

constructive advice in an atmosphere

where players feel safe and valued .

Put away the cricket bats and the zinc cream .Forget about Thorpie and the Olympic trials.Thankfully, the gut busting running sessions

are over and its time to focus on the mainevent, the 2004 C Grade Premiership Season.

It is argued the battle for the HJ Stewart Cup,

is the most fiercely contested and even of allamateur sections, as clubs strive to prove

they are worthy of loftier grades, and aredesperate to avoid the relegation zone of lower

competitions .

In season '04, C - Section welcomes back, D1

champions Monash Blues, and their GrandFinal adversary, Ajax. Whilst 2001 C Grade

Premiers, Hampton Rovers return along withMHSOB, with both eager for a quick re-entryto the top ranks .

However, immediate promotion will bedifficult as the surviving 2003 sides look to

better their performances and earn their ownGrand Final berth . Leading the charge will be

preliminary finalists Emmaus St . Leo's(ESL), who will be desperate to atone for last

year's straight sets finals demise.

Caulfield Grammarians pushed the eventualPremiers Beaumaris, all the way in their

elimination final, and second year coach Merv

Keane, will be expecting further improvementthis time around .

The Mentone Vultures have been re-birthedas the Parkdale Vultures, by virtue of themerger between Mentone Vultures andParkdale Footy Clubs . They will be especiallyhungry to live up to the new club's motto of"Eat `Em Dead" !Old Camberwell destroyed both ESL and theFielders in the final two rounds of '03, andthey will be hoping to start '04 in the samepowerful manner .Glen Eira were hard hit by injuries in 2003but the Saints know if they can get their bestsquad on the paddock, opposition sides are in

for a long tough

afternoon .

It is a similar story

out at Oak Park, ~ ---- and the Therry

Penola lads who won as many games as theylost in 2003, will be pushing for finals glory .

PREVIEWWith no form to guide, Round 1 is always atough proposition and more often than not, which way the coin fell determined theselections .The Fielders host the Wellers at theRacecourse oval, and both teams will want toget the '04 campaign off to a winning start .This game will be evenly poised and on a hardfast track, I'11 tip the home side in a bob of theheads .Therry take the long road out to Burwoodwhere they tackle ESL, and unfortunatelydespite the visitors best efforts, All be an evenlonger road home, as the Parks claim thepoints. The Jachas have the toughest challenge ofthe week with last year's D Graders, sidling

up to tackle Hampton fresh out of B section .Whilst the Jackas may enjoy the open spacesof Boss James, the Rovers will have too many

trump cards and will prevail .

The new look Vultures will parade their freshinnovatively designed jumpers when they arewelcomed by IAH S OE3 . Parkdale will provetheir footy is just as smart as their outfits andoutpoint the Highs .New Monash mentor Jon Edgar, put hischarges through gruelling sessions ofbiathlons, athletics events and even someorienteering over the summer. Hopefully theywon't need the compass to goals today, andshould account for Glen Eira .

Executive changes. With David Scott'sacceptance of the VAFA treasurer's post, a

vacancy was created on the ExecutiveCommittee following David's resignation - his

resignation necessary to accept this role .David, as treasurer remains on theExecutive, but like CEO Phil Stevens does notcast a vote when issues are voted on . Thevacancy for David's position was contestedat the March Members' meeting and a field ofthree - Steve Carroll, Chris Kelly and JohnRobinson, contested a ballot with StevenCarroll the successful candidate .

® 0 0Steven Carroll as a full voting member of theExecutive joins the following Executivemembers - Bruce McTaggart (President),Nick Bourke (Executive Chairman), JohnBell, Ross Booth, Tom Brain, David Cook,Ken Criswick, Richard Evans (ImmediatePast President), Barry Hickey, PeterHutchinson, Bruce Ivey, Andrew Langford-Jones and Paul Trainor . David Scott and Phil

Bruce NcTa~fart - new UA3 e: ~resi .,': ;It

Stevens are the two non-voting members asis Phil Rowell ( legal adviser) when he isasked to attend . Brett Connell (GeneralManager-Football Operations) acts as theExecutive's minute secretary .

® 0 ®Changes in VAFA Administration . With thetreasurer not at headquarters as frequentlyas the previous treasurer, there has been a

shift in some of Sue Anderson's duties with

Sue absorbing some of the financial duties .This has allowed the staff to be strengthenedby the addition of l. Trainee MatthewNyhus. Matthew, who has made animpressive start, has his time split

completing VAFA duties and FIDA duties .Accordingly the VAFA and FIDA share thepaying of Matthew's wage .

Sportscover Pick the Seven PremiersCompetition continues this season with aprize of $10,000 up for grabs should a soloclub entry successfully nominate the premierof the seven senior sections . The $10,000 isshared if there is more than one successfulentry . A $1,000 consolation prize is also onoffer. Each VAFA club is entitled to twoentries and clubs have up until Friday April30 to submit their entries . Each entry mustappear on a club letterhead and be signed bythe club president or secretary. After eachnominated premier team the runner upshould be shown in brackets . The runner-ups will be used in the case of splitting oneclub in the determination of the consolationprize ($1,000) . Each club's two entries shouldbe faxed to 9531 6601 or 9531 2050 ormailed to the VAFA. Entries must be receivedby 5pm April 30.

® 0 ®Trainers' Association Executive becomesactive . Already the TAE has met four timesthis year and one of the Executive'sachievements has been securing columnspace in each edition of the "AmateurFootballer ." The TAE has also had aninfluence on some health and safety issue s

Sportscover Arena matches andluncheons . This year as a financial incentivefor clubs playing at EP and who conduct apre-match luncheon, free entry tickets(limited to 50), a % return on the gate and arebate per head based on attendees at theluncheon is given to the club which hosts theluncheon. The home club has the first offer ofhosting the luncheon .

0 fl 0Interesting statistic to date . Of the 7198players "on the books" currently registere d

David Scott - fills the big shoes left b yNoel Rundle as the new VAFA Treasurer.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2604

this figure includes 950 who qualify forUnder 19 football - the figure being thehighest since 1991 .

0 ® ®The price of the "Amateur Footballer"(charged by the printer) remains at $1 .25 perissue . In mid-2002 the size of the "AmateurFootballer" was increased and the printingcharge increased to $1 .25 as a result -without any increases passed on to clubs atthat time. To turn this annual loss to abalanced result it has been decided toincrease the cost per issue for clubs to $1 .30.The loss 2002 and 2003 absorbed by theVAFA was caused by the number of extra"Amateur Footballers" needed to be producedfor sponsors, patrons, members of theExecutive, members of the Gold Pass LifeClub and others on the VAFA's "special" list .This increase equates to approximately $60per club . We recommend that clubs sell"Amateur Footballers" at matches for $2 as inthe past

The 2004 season sprung to life with another he v 'll be a handyfabulous PSM Dinner at the Crown Palladium, acquisition in th eand I can only wonder at so m any meals being ruck. Anthonyproduced and served to such efficient and Parkin wants t oindividual silver service standard! And theofficial speeches were SO short! Augurs well for

a fabulous season!Heartiest congratulations to my long-term

buddies Kevin Segota and Tom Brain on taking

out the VAFA Personality of the Year & HughLyon Knitwear Media Award respectively . Twochampion Amo blokes and thoroughly deserved! This time last year only one D1 Club said theyintended being promoted ; all the rest aimed atfinishing 5th! This year every side is hell bent

on upward mobility, though a couple did admitto it being a big ask. Makes me wonder whatthey've all been ingesting!Fitz roy Reds v University Black sAfter their stellar 2003 in D2 Graham Burgen

and the Reds are in the mood for more of thesame! Rumour has it that the off-season

recruitment drive netted a handy bunch ofadditional talls, which will greatly assist thetransition into the D1 crucible. Blacks have losta few through retirements, but the Overseas

Travel Carousel delivered back Chris `TheColonel' Sandiford after doing the circuit, and

build on the solidwork put in by Paul O'Shannassy in the last twoseasons, and basically the Blacks are sick of D1and intend being promoted out of it!! Winner =Reds. No idea why or by how much !Ormond v Old MentoniansThe Mends have put in a solid pre-season andtheir practice match form has beenencouraging . They expect to have 10 or so oftheir new recruits in their starting line up, and

have been boosted by the return of Tim Ashford& Garrin Bailey from O/S. They intendreturning whence they came, after this year inDI! Old Mentonians are very upbeat about their

chances in 2004, without that implying massrecruitment . The feeling in the Panthers campis one of quiet resolve, and they won't have to bemuch better than their 2003 level to actualisetheir dream. Winner = Old Mentonians .Peninsula O B v Salesian t30A few weeks back the Pirates, who had lost a fewfrom last year's line up, weren't exactlybrimming with confidence. However, time andJulian Sill's determination has turned th e

sourish mood around and, with a new Leader in

Travis St Clair, they will give a good account ofthemselves, especially today for the grand

opening of their magnificent new Pavilion (whichthis scribe, doing the decent thing by his fellow

Executive Members, isn't attending! Mutter!

Mutter!), Salesians pulled off a minor miracleby avoiding relegation last year, and that

fighting spirit has come with them into thisseason, along with a richly enhanced player list!

As usual, John Grace was very cautious about

admitting too much! Winner = Peninsula .They're at 1 =, and it's a big day for them .

Aquinas v - ISteve Bell h> got Aquinas super fit, and theirpractice match form has been very encouraging.Banyule is also very fit, and Greg Whitcroft hasbeen pleased with their pre-season match form .The Bears were the best side in the Section inthe middle of last year and their slump in theback quartile of the H&, A rounds remains amystery . Winner = Banyule.Yarra Valley ®B v PrahranTim Killworth was so `focused' when I saw him

out at La Trobe No 2 a couple of weeks-back,when YVOB played a practice game against Old

Carey, that I didn't dare ask him how 2004 was

looking! Tim's mood improved this week, and

96

even though the Club will feel the loss of captainBrad Peake (the new leader is Ash Drew), theBushrangers will again give a good account ofthemselves, and they actually did finish 5th in2003! Prahran have a few top pick ups fromMetropolitan and Country areas (Jarrod Bevan,Christian Plummer, and Craig Moffet werenames mentioned), and have shown goodpractice match form, so the Two Blues areconfident of a successful campaign . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2G04 25

Page 28: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2004

First game up for preview isAssumption versus LaTrobe Uraiversi atThe Boulevard . The "gardening implements"were perhaps unlucky to be relegated fromD l in 2003, missing out on survival only bypercentage, while LaTrobe will be keen toimprove after a lacklustre season last year.At this stage, the Hoes will be many people'sfavourites for promotion, if not the flag, andthey should get off to a flyer today. Ivanhoefor mine .

The next game takes us to Fearon Reserve, where Bentleigh make the trek over WestGate to square up against '% 3C S. Both sides missed finals actio i lastyear, and may well be up for another longwinter in 2004, but for their sakes, hopefullyI'm being premature in this assessment . Asfor today's game, I am finding it hard to gopast Willy, so Willy it is Lb i .2003 D3 premiers - -host Old Geelong at St . James P-k. TheRazorbacks, apart from a mid-season b li p,were as good as any team at that level inrecent years (although those 2001 FitzroyReds were very awesome), and the trendlately seems to see these teams carry on theirupward momentum . Are Swinburne thelatest boom club? Time will tell if they standthe test of time, to quote Sammy Hagar, andthe ex-students will also harbour finalsambitions after finishing fifth in 2003, buttoday, with the unfurling of the pennant, I'llplump for the Piggies .The other team promoted from D3,Gryphons, have a tough ask first up, ~henthey play host to 2003 D2 finalists 01- a,are:yat East Caulfield Reserve . The Gryphons willbe tipped by many to be relegation fodder, but being an unknown quantity at this levelcould well serve in their favour. ThePanthers, though, will have other thoughtson their mind, redemption for exiting at theFirst Semi Final amongst them . Interesting

to see if "Big Jac

Lwill be downsample theGryphon gourmet fare.Carey .Finally,

,we at McAlister Oval in the D2

My tip today - Old

's t Brunswick entertain Bulleen-

match of the day. The Wicks finished third in2003 and will be looking to go at least thatone step better, while the Bullants, bottom ofDl last year, will I'm sure be aiming toachieve instant promotion . Both teams arepretty hard to toss, but given the homeground advantage, I'll go with WestBruns ' today .CWell, it's my wrap for the first round of2004 Hopefully as the season progresses, I'llget to know the clubs and the players betterand be able to give more detailed analysisand prev~ ws, but I can't do it without yourhelp, so please send any details toPeter. PS . mson@centrelink .gov.auHave a g . VAFA weekend ,The Qwtt tWhat Andrew SaysCoaches don't like looking any further thanthe week ahead so who knows what theythink of football writers who makepredictions in March as to who will be playingin September. At the risk of looking like anidiot, this column will briefly look at yourclub and predict the make-up of the four.West Brunswick (3rd, 13 wins-6 losses) andOld Carey (4th, 12-7) were the two finalistslast year that remained in D2 . Both clubshave had changes to its coaching staff withSteve Maus replacing Glenn Taylor at OldCarey and Angus Hamilton taking over fromJulian Siebrand at McAlister Oval . Bothsides were entrenched in the four a long wayfrom September last year and need only areasonable run with injury this year to againplay finals .

26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2004

Page 29: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2004

Their nearest rivals Old Geelong (5th, 10-8)improved in leaps and bounds last year. Both competition best and fairest winnerHugh McCarthy and leading goalkicker MarkVickers-Willis have been retained and if OldGeelong is to take the next step this seasonand play finals, this duo will need to again beat the top of their games.

Heartbreak club Williamstown (6th, 8-10)lost five games last year by less than 13points including three losses in a row byunder a goal . The CYMS have gained theservices of ruckman Dave Sadler and utilityRoss Hart but have lost club stalwart AndyFeatherston to retirement and midfielder PhilThompson to another league . Gun forwardDave Lee will play again and alarmingly foropposition clubs, coach Dene Macleodbelieves Lee is fitter than last year .Former Old Carey coach Glenn Taylor hastaken over from Tony Crisafulli at La Trobe(7th, 6-12) this year and his hoping his newclub can "retrieve a bit of pride' after itsdisappointing season last year.Like La Trobe, Bent2eigh (8th, 6-12) has alsoexperienced a change at the helm with JustinPaul replacing Paul Dimattina . Despitemissing up to 14 of their best players duringstages last year, the Demons still managed towin six games. Even with a better run withinjury, this year could be one of rebuilding forthe Demons .Newly promoted clubs Monash Gryphons(2nd, 13-5) and S b e University (Ist,13-5) both have similar goals this year. Whilethe Gryphons are hoping to win 10 games,Swinburne is hoping to again play finals .

The Gryphons have recruited midfielder TimBourbon (Mazenod) and key defender DanHill (North Old Boys) but have lost JonBlandford and full-back Paul Holland .

Swinburne has lost three key players fromtheir premiership team but has retainedspearhead Jason Murchie .Newly relegated clubs, Ivanhoe Assumption(9th, 5-13) and Bulleen Templestowe (10th,4-14), were both competitive in D1 last yearand will relish the drop in grade .Bulleen believe their losses in playingpersonnel have been neutralised by theirgains and are looking forward to returning tothe winners' list .Unlike last year, Ivanhoe Assumption coachJohn Matthew would not be drawn intomaking a prediction for his side's fortunesthis year but quipped :

"Hopefully we'll win enough games to stay upotherwise I could be out of a job ."

Phil Stevens reminded everybody that "although

the 1999 season takes everyone's focus as from

today" there would be a significant change to thestructure of the competition, below C Grade, atthe completion of the season . The improvemen t

Popular Therry Penola immediate past president,

to the structure was expected to even up thelower grades by removing the separate "E Blue"and "E White" grades from their domicilefoundation to a true promotion and relegationbasis resulting in Grades D1 to D4 as we knowtoday . The intention was to ensure that fromseason 2000 the new structure would return allgrades to ten teams with the possible exception ofthe lowest grade, D4 . The new structure was alsoexpected to remain intact for some time to come, hopefully with only extensions required to caterfor further increases in the number of competingclubs.

A Section coaches were Kevin Collins (De LaSalle), Tony Paatsch (Marcellin), Tony Pappotto(Old Haileybury), Stuart Glascott (Old Ivanhoe),Neil Ross (Old Melburnians), Wayne Harmes (OldScotch), Tim O'Shaughnessy (Old Xavs), GarryFoulds (St Bernards), Mike McArthur-Allen (StKevins) and Grant Williams (Uni Blues) . Both '98Grand Finalists, Xavs and Scotch got away to astrong start with wins over St Bernards and DeLa and new OM's coach, Neil Ross, sent out anearly warning as his team comfortably accountedfor Uni Blues.

In B grade North Old Boys were the big winnersover newly promoted Hampton Rovers andWhitefriars commenced their season strongly inC grade at the expense of Prahran . Chris Carrigg(Whitefriars) with 9 goals kicked the sweep in thesenior sections and Matthieu Lucas (St Kevins)with 10 in U19 Section 1 gave an early indicationof his exciting style of forward play .

Col Gibson, VAFA Personality of the Year in 1998,was honoured by his club with over 250supporters in attendance . The VAFA's NoelRundle spoke at the function and stated that"every club would be proud to have a member likeCol". Noel also commended Col who showed hisusual courage by picking the best ever Therryteam on this special occasion .

Vic' lealt 1

The wait is over! With summer now behind us, With all clubs startingfooty is back in town. For us diehards, it is I equal and no form toalways a long time in the coming! speak of, it's aA number of external issues will make this atough year for all local clubs . Droughts, insurance and public liabilities have all playedtheir part in adding to the burden of the clubsand the people who help to run them. Ofcourse, the VAFA Executive and Administrationalso face these types of challenges on behalf oftheir clubs . Best wishes to Bruce RRe'P as tand Phil Stevens an d their respective teams .May the year be incident free and the footy fastand furious!

One of my pet hobbies has been theencouragement of the 'After Match' andsupport for it from all clubs . Whilst theenjoyment of socialising with the opposition isgreat, the added benefit of helping support rivalclubs financially should not be underestimated .The costs of running clubs have grownsignificantly in recent years whilst the supportfrom outside groups has diminished . Helpingan opposition club meet their financialrequirements can only lead to one thing, strongcompetition again next year. It has to be goodfor footy!

During recent weeks, a number of Victorianbased AFL Presidents have talked about howthey join forces to help each other. Somethingsimilar has happened in D3, whereby a numberof Presidents have suggested an award torecognize the Club voted as being best 'AfterMatch' Supporters (as voted by club Presidentsat the end of the year) . Once again, with a spiritof co-operation, a sponsor has been sourcedand consequently the inaugural winners of the

title will not only have the bragging rights but'also a cheque for $1,000 to keep a smile ontheir treasurer's face! We only need a name for

the Award and we will be up and running soyour feedback would be appreciated. Good luck!

Anyway, to the footy!

tipster's delight !

First game sees two sides with plenty of youthand lofty ambitions as Mt Lilydale andRupertswood meet . The Woods are beingdiscussed openly as strong premiership

candidates whilst Mt Lilydale have put thedisappointment of last years D4 final lossbehind them and take the great leap up .Woodsmen for me .

Power House and Werribee clash in a gamewhich sees two mid table sides from last yearmeet . The House got of to a slow start last yearand then surged but only briefly whilst Werribeewas in the hunt all year but not quite able toland the killer blow . Home ground advantagecounts for plenty at this time of the year somaybe the House .

Syndal host Hawthorn in a game being playedfor the "Beehive Cup" . These two sides alwaysseem to have a close one up at Jordan Reserveand expect no different this year. Syndal alsofinished mid table last year whilst the Hawkstake the tumble from D2 after an injury infested2003 . Not sure about this one, maybe Syndal?Ummi High makes the trek out to St . Johns, nodoubt still on a high from their triumph in D4last year. The Jocs were perilously close to thedrop zone for plenty of 2003 but managed toplay their way out of trouble in what was arebuilding year. Hard to go past the homeground advantage (5 goals at this time of year?)so the Jocs for me .

Finally ® akleigh welcome South Melbourne upthe highway . The drums are beating as loud forOakleigh as any side in a long time with oneanalyst suggesting to bet long and hard on theKrushers . South will be a good test, havingplayed finals in 2003 . Still, can't get the drumsout of my head, Oakleigh for me !

So to the predictions for the finals, wellpakleigh and Rupertswood to play off in the bigone and Power House to start favorites for thebest "After match" Supporters (great form line!) .

New TeamOur new Adviser this year is former umpireBrian "Benny" Goodman, with him is a newlook team of Mark Jenkins (Assistant), ShaneHerbert (Goal Adviser), Bobby Mutton(Boundary Adviser), Brian Woodhead (SkillsCoach) and Jason McNiece (Fitness Trainer) .With Brian comes a plethora of observers toover see the umpires within all grades . Keepan eye out for these people, Ken JorgensenBob Taylor, Barry Morrison, Ted Calnan

,,

Andrea Thwaites, John Horwood, JohnRobinson, Tim Dodds, Justin Lipson, andRussel Davidson.

New AdministrationThis year's Executive is : Anthony Damen(Pres .), Peter Simpson (Vice Pres-Sr), LeahGallagher (Vice Pres-Jr), Simon Stokes (Sec),Geoff Curran (Assistant Sec), Paul Jones(Tres), Patrick Coulthard (Assistant Tres),Mark Morrison (Social Sec), Bernie Jephson& Rob Mayston (ordinary members)

NEW RULE - ~A couple of new

rules that we wis hto highlight are in ®relation to what the full back can do this year.

Firstly, to bring the kick in rule in line to what

we are observing in the big league, the full

back must kick the ball to himself within the

goal square, before playing on (he does not

have to kick it to himself over the goal squareline) .

Secondly, if the full back is taking too muchtime in bring the ball back into play from abehind the umpire will call him to hurry up, ifthe full back continues to dwell then theumpire will call "play on" and the full backcan be legally tackled within the goal square .CongratulationsSome congratulation to umpires prior to theseason commencing . Firstly to Kevin Segotawho was bestowed the honour of 2003 VAFAPersonality of the year, a great choice as we allknow that Chille is a personality around theumpires and clubs .

An umpire we haven't seen pre season hasbeen Mark Gibson, Gibbo has not stopped

umpiring as he has lent his services to the

NTFL (Northern Territory Football League) . Totop off his services Gibbo umpired the Grand

Final with a former VAFAUA umpire in BenSchmidt, well-done guys .

Tom Brain (PUMP and part time reserveumpire) was awarded the Hugh Lyon

Knitwear Media Award for 2003, congratsTommy .

Hello and welcome to another season of D4. After last

our grade F1sterrnvidc and Kew. It is also great to

season's dose finish, we say goodbye to the premiers Un iHigh and the runners up, MtLilydale, and welcome int o

goodbye to the dreaded bye, with an even fixture t~eresult

SMy beloved - - ~,

like most seasons, haveonce again looked fantastic in their preseason with anumber of the younger faces starting to shine, while th e

of some older heads have strengthened coach JWilson's playing stocks. Although, th ey have filled mewith plenty of false hope in the past, from what I havemen solar this pre-season, the Wanic~-s could well be the"real-deal`' and I am tipping than for a top four tinish .

North will be hoping to improve on Iast sea~n's8th place finish, however, I am not sure they have theability to challenge for a final's berth . Fifteen new recruitsto the playing list, the dub's depth is at an all time high .New players whobe worked really hard over the pre-season such as Cameron Garrett, Rhys Ball, Steve Darc .y,Matt Rogers will be players to look for, while I am toldopposition players be on their guard against Americanstrongman Rob Demarco. Fxpect a~ple of upsets fromthe lads this season, however, I believe they will finish nohigher than last season's effortAnge Sammartino's troops from North BS d. arealways a difficult team to pick given half their teamcontinually miss pre-season due to cricket finals. Thisyear is no exception, however, I would expect them to bea competitive outfit, espedally at Bocce Palace . I amexpecting them to finish just outside the four.Alert Park has again had an interrupted preseasoncourtesy of the Formula One GP. While they have had

eight players from last seasoalready season have to hanga

uup the boots. While they have had an average shouing inpractice matches, not a lot should be read into this f~ngiven the number ofplayers absent through cricket finalsI would expect a top four finish for the Falcons this yeanEltham has had an interesting summer, with the lateappointment of Wayne Reardon as senior coach afte rstints in the Diamond Valley and Essendon DistrictLeagues. Described as a tremendous addition, theTurtles expectations have increased on his arrival .However, losses of experienced players have made it moreof a challenge, and it will be up to the large number d

promising youngstersto improve on 2Q03'sdisappointmentPersonally, I think the _ iTurtles will be goingthrough a rebuilding phase this season and a bottomthree finish is my ti p .

I am tipping the big improvers for season 2004 to be' C - - With ten new players on the list

e induding Frank Ar~-ad from Thonastaam who has,

eg taken on the role as assistant coach, the Cobra playingstocks are swelling. The dub is expecting big things fromMatt DAngelo who is back after recovering from a longillness. Their practice match form has also been goodgiving Box Hill North a bit of a touch up in one match. Iam tipping the Buileen lads tom the five to seven bradiet .After two disappointing seasons, M ond Centralbelieve they will be a lot more competitive this season. Thedub has aconpietety new fi st that has seen the additionof several key position players. New senior coach andformer'94 Premiership player Frank Bove, who has overtwenty years of coaching and playing experience isconfident the his side can turn it around . Dub presidentChris Barry told me, "Ebecyone down at the dub isconfident about where this dub is heading. The boys havebeen training with an intensity I haverit seen here atRichmond for quite awhile. I have no doubt its going tobe a big year. Tm excited!" I am not so sure though, andwhile I expect improvement, I do not believe they will bestrong enough to challenge for the final four, and a bottomthree finish is the tip.

The early premiership favorite for D4 is Kew, after beingextremely stiff to have been relegated last season . Thedub has had good numbers on the track for the start oftheir 2004 journey and with excellent practice matchform, coach Rohan Doherty would have to be smiling. The appointment of Nick Tinetti as captain is seen asanother positive, and when you combine his pace withthe skill of Matty Blair, who is back from a serious ankleinjury, and last year's B&F John Looker, the lads fromKew look hard to beat and as such, they get my pre-season kiss of death as my premiership tip .Having been narrowly defeated in the semi finals lastyear,SLMarys have welcomed back 2002 B&:.F winner MattGilchrist and 2002 leading goal kicker Vaughan Ryanafter an injury plagued 2003, while .Adam "llylan Bang'Lane has sizzled on the track and should have a bigyear .

THE A MATEUR FOOTBALLER 2004

Page 45: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2004

Consecutive matches, including a Friday night dash atthe home of VAFA football, Sportscover Arena, will beearly season highlights and should hold the team in goodstead . I am tipping big things for the Saints this year andexpect them to finish in the top four. Finally, at the time of going to press I had not heard toomuch from newcomers 'ck, and it would appearthat the dub with a 99 year history did not want to givetoo much away . They started with a flyer last season, however, did not have the staying power to challenge forthe remairgier. Therefore it is a little hard to judge howthey will go down in D4, but my gut feel is that they willneed to rebuild after last season's disaster, and a mid-ladder finish will be a realistic finish for the dub .Round One PrewewST MARYS v KEWThe match of the day is being played at Ferndale Park asthe Saints host D4 newcomer Kew in what promises to bean epic match. Both teams are early final's aspirants andtherefore will be desperate to get off to a good start for theseason. While the Saints will be buvyed by the return oftheir star performers, I think they may struggle awayfrom the confines of their favoured Ferndale Park . In whatshould be a good indicator of what is to come, I am goingwith Kew to win a dose game by 14 points .RICHMOND CENTRAL v ELTHAM COLLEGIANSThe Snakes take on the Turtles in what many D4 punditsare saying could be a battle for the wooden spoon . I amsure Wayne Reardon and Frank Bove would want to hearnone of that nonsense this early in the year and will beout to show the rest of the competition how wrong theirassertions are. Both dubs are supremely confident thatthey will improve on their 2003 form and will be keen toopen their account in Round 1 . While EIItham will bestrengthened by the return of John Panetta after missinglast season, I believe will they struggle away from homeand therefore I am going with Richmond to win by aconvincing 25 points.OLD WESTBOURNE v BOX HILL NORTHBox Hill North make the long trip down to Arctic Park totake on a Westbourne team keen to take the next stepafter last seasons resurgence. Having won the last timethese two teams met, Box Hill will be chock full ofconfidence to repeat the dose for the Warriors, however, itis a more disciplined and refined Warrior outfit in 2004 .While I expect Box Hill to put in a spirited performance, Ido not believe they have the class to match it with thelikes of "Judza Horsburgh, "Surfer" Hodgson and"Chesty" Fairfield and therefore I am getting on theWarrior bandwagon early as I tip them to win comfortablyby 39 points

BULLEEN COBRAS v ELST CKWhat a treat the supporters have in store for them as theytravel to Koonung Reserve to see two improving teamsbattle it out for premiership points. Both teams hadordinary seasons last year, and both have shown greatpromise in the lead up to this match . While it is alwayshard to judge teams on preseason form, I think theCobras have things going along quite well at the minute, and in front of a patriotic home crowd, I am going withthem to beat the D4 newcomers by 9 points.

NORTH BRUNSWICK v ALBERT PARKTwo of last season's finalists meet at Bocce Palace in aquest to assert some early influence on D4 . With bothteams expected to finish in the top half, it promises to bean intriguing encounter and picking a winner is a difficulttask, given they have both had interrupted pre seasons .Albert Park though, have proven in the past to be slowstarters, and the trip away will not suit them, and assuch, I am going with North to win by 12 paintsPress CorrespondentsIf you want your team and players mentioned in mycolumn, I am only too happy to oblige . However, I mustget your reports into me by midday on Monday at thelatest Please also include your nomination for the playerof the round . My preference is an email [email protected] .

MILESTONESBuTleen - Rod Sh will be playing hisgame today for the dub . Rod is a long time servant of theCobras, and everyone wishes him all the best for thegame. I am told he will be wearing his "traditional"number 28 for this game only and one of my regularcontributors, Andrew Foskett, has kindly lent it to him forthe day. Andrew did say he expects it cleaned for itsreturn to him for Round Two l.

Elsternwick - congratulate Shane Mahony who playshis game for the Club against the Bulleen Cobras .Shane is the oldest of the Mahony dan and has had towork the hardest of them all to achieve success and reachthis milestone. Things have been tough for the Widters onfield over the last 10 years yet Shane has stood tall indefence often against insurmountable adds nearly alwaysplaying against taller opponents . A spell on the wing in2002 was a godsend for Shane, he really enjoyed theopportunity to run free culminating of his winning of theQub's Most Improved Trophy at almost veteran skalus. All at the Widcers congratulate you Shane on achievingthis important milestone in your career, we hope its agood one as you continue to play your heart out for thehopefully resurgent Widters in 2004 .K - All at Kew congratulate Matthew Dalrymple onplaying his 150th game in the season's opener todayagainst Sr. Mary's. Matty, originally from Kennington, finished reserves 2nd B&F in his first two years followedby the B&F two seasons later. He was an integral part ofthe reserves '98 premiership team at CHB and now hisfine form has gained that post in the seniors. Over thegood dub man Matty has also served on the generalcommittee Good luck today Matty from all the Kew boys .

Welcome to season 2004 and the new look VAFA Trainers' Association . The Trainers' AssociationExecutive (TAE) at this stage is President - Helen Kenna, Secretary - Brooke Murphy, Treasurer - Denise

Meehan (Beiersdorf) and Phil Stevens (VAFA) .

Kelly, Committee - Molly May, Elizabeth Ravalli, Chris Kelly, Rob Duncan (Club Warehouse), Andrew

The pre-season has seen some changes for the better for trainers in general. This year, with meetings calledregularly by Phil, has seen the three meetings held so far being of real value . The VAFA Trainers' Executivehas suggested a new uniform for all trainers to wear so as to set them apart from all other officials on theground. The VAFA Executive has approved this. It will be a royal blue body with orange sleeves in both atee-shirt and polar fleece jumper for the cold days. The word TRAINER is emblazoned across the back . TheTrainers Association hopes all Clubs will support this initiative to raise the profile of their trainers in theVAFA . For 2004 the old uniforms are quite okay to be worn if clubs cannot afford to outlay extra expense .

The next important the TAE has had influence with is in regards to what happens to unconscious playerson the field. If a player is knocked unconscious and when the trainers reach him he is still unconscious andnot coming round then he must only be removed from the field by a doctor or an ambulance officer - not bythe trainers . Also a player who is unconscious but comes around on the field must not play for the rest of thegame no matter what the coaching staff requests.

If your have any queries or questions of your Trainers' Association please email Chris Kelly onchriskl5@bigpond .com. We now have a weekly page in the Amateur Footballer every week so hope to hearfrom you all so I can each week present an informative column . Best wishes to all clubs for an enjoyableseason .

Section OneAfter a tumultuous off-season for all football codesaround the nation, season 2004 kicks off thisweekend with a host of exciting fixtures, as newcoaches and players aim to impress in their firstouting of the season .

Defending premiers St Bernards start their

campaign for back-to-back titles this afternoon,

playing St Kevins away at Righetti Oval . VAFA U 19

Coach of the Year David Law stays at the helm withSt Bernards, who face a tough challenge from a St

Kevins outfit that have shown promise in the

-season Undoubtedly one of the biggest signings

Section Two

Welcome one andall to Round -season 2004. As a Wi

se man once said fhere's

nothing better than to suffer from leather poisoning

in April. "The beauty of Round I in the under 19s, is that, kinda like Forrest Gump's mum's box of chocolates ,

"you never know whatcha goter get" . Many

players have moved on, others have arrived . Most

will have to re-focus from a summer of beachholidays, first year classes, first year girls, new jobsor apprenticeships, Centrelink and anything butgetting a kick in mid-April .

Thankfully for most coaches (who will have thehighest mobile phone bills going around) some of

"Um will hav e

Pof the off-season, Richard Obee joins St Kevins astheir under nineteens coach, Obee havingsuccessfully coached Old Brighton to the DivisionOne Premiership in 2002 ironically against St

Kevins . With a healthy squad to choose from, StKevin's look well positioned to make an impact onthe competition in 2004, coach Obee pleased withth t amwork and cohesion of his players in their

the 'veterans' of the U19 compe oslogged their guts out for many weeks with their

senior club counterparts - all in the name of a'big

pre-season'. The U19 coach will look to these youngmen for early season inspiration .

Some of their team-mates will have thecan of the coach and trotted down to trainin

g bell u~liny inrecent weeks . Chances are, they pulling upwith cramp halfway through the 3rd quarter andrueing their decision to skip pre-season . If ever you

should laugh at your team-mates' misfortune, thi s

e efinal practice hit-out a fortnight ago

. However they

do go into this weekend's match as underdogs, St

Bernards favourites as they aim to become only the

eighth team ever to claim back-to-backJ .S . McCann

Cups .

Across town a highly anticipated match between twoof last years finalists looms, as Uni Blues play hos t

to Old Scoteh . Having impressed in three practicematches against Essendon, Scotch and St Bernardsbefore the Easter break, the Blues have looked oneof the strongest sides this preseason ; Tim Giles'

boys showing potential to go one better than theirrunners-up finish last year. An overflowing list of

players will also help the Blues this weekend, whowill go in favourites against a confident Scotch side.

The only new side to section one this season

Werribee Amatuers have a tough initiation in theopening round, a home encounter against Caulfield

Grammarians. Guiding Werribee to the section twopremiership last year, Fab Gatti's side will showtenacity but may struggle physically against astrong Caufield side.Elsewhere this afternoon, last year's preliminaryfinalists Old Xaverians should account forMarcellin, while De La Salle wiIl travel as favourites

to Old Brighton .

is it! !prognosticationsFair to say this round will be "harder to pick than a

broken nose" . No fear though, armed with my trustytarot cards, crystal ball, and latest copy of the AgeForm Guide for Bendigo here goes .

Banyule-Viewbank: The 'smoky' of the field will b e

the Combine, who went all the way last year

undefeated . Big step up in class will test them.

Beaumaris : Finished on strongly and the Sharkstable will be looking to improve on last years'

outing. I~very chance.

Collegians : Rising in class but the lure of racing onthe Trott every second week will have them fallingout of the trees to lace the boots.

Hampton : Much excitement about the new season

at Casa Boss . `I .4y Will pray for a good start to avoiddropping too fa-r back into the chasing pack .

Old Camberwell: The Wellers stumbled into the

+ THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2004

finals last season, and should jump to the frontearly on, then focus on September. Each way.

Old Essendon : Rumour is the disappointment of thelast season's campaign will translate into a slow tostart in 2004 . Will be pushing hard once they roundthe turn .

Old Ivanhoe : Traditional mudlarks who will havesome healthy rivals . Don't be surprised if theheavier conditions at Chelsworth send several sidessinking .

Old Melburnians : Were at the head of the packchasing last season's bolter, but fell short when itreally counted . Favourites in the ring .

Old Trinity: How they cover for the loss of one or twogun riders to higher duties will be crucial . Solidtrack preparation against class fields will assistgreatly.

Rupertswood : All is healthy out Sunbury way, andthe picture perfect bush racetrack will pose someproblems for visiting thoroughbreds. Good chance.Selections :

Collegians should be too strong for Beaumaris at theTrott, home by 3 goals .

Recent scratch match form says the Bears shouldbe too strong for the Wellers by 23 points .

The Hoers to edge out Rovers by 4 points after twoballs go missing the trees at the Yarra Rover end .Game of the Week will see Rupertswood flex someserious muscle on their home deck, and hand OMsa 16-point defeat .

Finally out at TEAC the Bombers face off againstTrinity . I'm going with my heart early - Deano's boysby 11 points in a ripper, with local boy Blake KellyBOG" .

Section 3

Ajax: Though not mathematically possible,AJAX sides are renowned for giving 110°l0. TheJackers on dry, open grounds - underestimate themat your peril.

MHSOB : The Unicorns' recruiting drive has beenhealthy from all reports, and they traditionally playthe W-M Oval well . Could be figuring in the finalsmix .

Old Paradians : a welcome return to a previouspowerhouse as the green & purple rises again inunder 19 footy . Do they still charge $2 to park yourcar?

Oakleigh : Will be happy to have received apromotion, and should be very competitive againstall-comers .

Monash Blues : Heard that they're climbing theHewitt Hall stairs in record speed this pre-season -could be a big year for m-y alumni! !

St Bedes Mentone : A good effort last year and willlook to consolidate in the higher division . Willsurprise a few if they string a few early winstogether.

University Blacks: No better advertisement to join aclub than getting to watch "Parke" do his nut attraining each week? College boys get on board theBlacks this year!

Old Carey: "Shoulda, coulda, woulda" last season, and will be disappointed they didn't . Carry theburden of section favouritism this year.

Therry Penola : Always tough and disciplined, theLions will be in for a testing year . . . .Whitefriars: Some BIG boys in the line-up, and asthe old saying goes. they don't get any shorter as thegame wears on . Will be thereabouts . . . .Selections :

MAX will roll the Unicorns, at the Packer Reserve,by a lazy 4 majors .

Parade to march home over Oakleigh by 13 points

With the Ashers on mid-semester break, the Tigersshould prevail by 17 in an early upset .

Game of the Round is at Parkville where the OCsshould just outlast Blacks by 3 point s

No joy for Therry at JP Fawkner, where the Friarsshould fly home and chalk up a 14 point win .

Section Bl ue

Beniieigh: As Maxwell Smart would say "missed itby that much" in 2003 . Will hope 2004 is Year of theDemon .

De La (2) : Never take a De La boy lightly, or so theSacre Couer girls said. Whether they're gold or blue, they'll fight to the bitter end .

Mazenod : Entering a rebuilding phase, which hasnecessitated a drop from the higher divisions .Hoping to chalk up some early wins for confidence .Oakleigh Clays : Unknown quantity to this scribe, similar to what some of my clients claim theyweren't trafficking. Keep any eye out for this one.

Ormond : Heard a whisper "it's all good" down at EEGunn, so the positive vibes should rub off on theunders. Strong chance for September methinks .

Peninsula : Hardest trip in the competition shouldmake for a good home ground advantage . Another tofigure in the finals' mix.

St Leo's : The Animals were unfortunate to miss outlast year and will have had 6 months of soul-searching to work out how it should be done .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2004 49

Page 52: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2004

South Melbourne: The Districts tread water lastseason, but with a stronger senior unit shouldapproach this year with confidence.

St John's: Those who would voluntarily play footballin Dandenong deserve the utmost respect . . . andfear. Coach Skinner will have his charges wellprepared .

Selections

Ormond to notch up an early upset over the Swansby 2 twin s

Oakleigh Clays will start their season off with a bangover the De La Golds - a lazy 5 snag win .

I expect some JOC-ularity as they salute, at TheAnimals' expense, by 17 points

The Nodders have a year to consolidate, but theDemons should start their season off *ell winningby 22 points .

The Pirates get some late season surfing in atGunnamatta . . . . .

Section Red

Season 2004 kicks off this weekend with fiveenticing matches, as two relegated sides try toimprove on a disappointing 2003, while UHS-VUhave to wait until next week to play their first juniorgame in more than thirty years .

With neither UHS-VU or St. Bernards (2) able to geta team up in their own right they've combined toform the hybrid UHS-VU/St. Bernards . Drawingeach other in the first round means they wait untilround 2 to begin their season .

Red section finalists La Trobe Uni host OldWestbourne this afternoon, coach Zoran Colovicpleased with the numbers on the track in thepreseason . With a host of new players signing up inthe past weeks, Colovic notes the squad isn't as tallas years gone by, but the experience of ten second-year players should help overcome this. Havingshown promise in three home practice matchesbefore the Easter break, La Trobe look strong athome, and will go into the match as favourites .

Across town Fitzroy travels to Aquinas, Reds coachTim Bell remaining tight-lipped about his side'sprospects this season . Retaining the seven highestvote getters in last years best-and-fairest, theFitzroy side looks strong on paper, a centurygoalkicker amongst those remaining at the club .Having won almost three times as many games asAquinas last year, the Reds enter the match asfavourites and should be too strong even away fromhome .

Elsewhere across the city, Bulleen-Templestowehost North Old Boys, the home side winlessthroughout 2003 and hoping to break their drought

in the first round back . Section three rejects NOBSfind themselves back in section red this season, theclub hoping to improve on an average 2003 whichsaw none of the club's sides reach the finals .

Finally Rupertswood (2) host Old Xaverians (2), inwhat should be a tough and evenly matchedencounter.

The majority of the games will be playedon Sunday April 18 at Parkville with onegame being played at Mambourin and theother two games will be played at Alburybefore the month's end .This season we have 15 teams overall, with 8 teams in division 1 and 7 teams indivision 2 .

All sides from reports have been putting ina big pre-seasons on and off the field withclub administrators working hard to getthe clubs up and running for the season2004 and the players putting the hardyards on the track to be up and runningfor round 1 .This season the old Karingal have changedtheir name to the Ballam Park and boththeir teams look like continuing on fromlast season and being strong .

Last year's top team for most of the year,

Ballarat, also look strong this year. As forthe remainder of the teams in Division 1look for a tightly tussled contests from allteams. Look out for last year's Division 2premiers Port Colts to be a strong teamand you can never write of Broadmeadowsafter there strong year last year.

Division 2 this year has 7 sides that willmake for a better competition this season .This year in Division 2 I can really see avery even competition with Moonee Valleycontinuing on there good form, but theside that will really give it a shake andshow a lot of improvement isMaribyrnong. Then you also have the likesof Parkside and Ringwood who had theexperience of playing in Division 1 lastyear and you can never write off Ovens &Murray and Broadmedows .

Good Luck and best wishes to all teamsthis year for the upcoming season and weare all looking forward to tightly tussledseason .

Winning EdgePresentations

Club XVIII continues to expand as territory toconstituent clubs realize the on going them . In myvalue of fielding a Club XVIII team. The opinion Oldcompetition again will comprise threesections, although membership withineach Section has risen to ten. In anunprecedented move Old Scotch, notonly has resumed participatiori after twoseason's absence, but has entered a sidein each section .Certainly all followers of Club XVIII lookforward to clean, vigorous andcompetitive football in each of thesections over the next nineteen weeks .Preview of Round 1 .Section 1 .Perennial premiers, Old Xaveriansshould be too talented for Marcellin, who despite struggling last season, gointo today's game with renewedconfidence .

In the season's opening clash, St Kevin'splayed De La Salle on Sportscover Arenalast night for the Anthony Molan Cup,named in honour of the late AnthonyMolan, who died after these teams metlast season. Under new Coach, Ben .Buick, De La Salle would have beenanxious to win so as to regain some theprestige lost last season. St Kevin'sopposition would have been sterling, although I reckon the winner wouldhave been, De La Salle .Old Ivanhoe under new coach, CoreyJewell, have had a different pre seasonpreparation in the Whitsunday Islands.Today they face Old Scotch, underformer star player, Andrew Millar. Aftera two season hiatus, Old Scotch couldfind the going tough on the longChelsworth Park oval, which is new

Ivanhoe shouldwin.

Old Brighton and Mazenod , who playedoff for the South Section pennant lastseason, meet at Brighton Beach wherevisiting sides inevitably strike trouble .However I expect a close contest andfavour Mazenod to win narrowly as theymay have an edge in match fitness .Prahran host Old Essendon, whotriumphed in the North Section in 2003 .It is difficult to go past Prahran, whopossess great talent even if it is notalways fully utilised. Under theleadership of Anthony Lawrence,Prahran should open with a win.Section 2 .

Collegians should start the season withvictory over newcomers, Old Scotch 2 onthe Harry Trott Oval . Given the successof the Collegian's Club in 2003, aresurgence in their Club XVIII strengthshould follow . Although today will tell, Iam confident of a "Lion" win .Eley Park, who disappointed in lastseason's semi final, have a big chance toredeem themselves today againstMonash Blues, whose stars may well befading and whose recruits may take awhile to assimilate . At Box Hill, I favourEley Park .

University Blacks await keen rivals,Fitzroy Reds at the Brens Oval .Optimism pervades the Reds' ranks andas university teams usually take a whileto settle down, I select the Reds, who arepart of an upwards march by theirparent club .

Old Melburnians could not have beengiven a harder assignment in theircomeback game as they face Therrypenola at Oak Park a place from whichvisitors seldom leave victorious. BobLyons has been training his chargeshard and they should be rewarded witha first up victory .Old Xaverians make the long journeyeastwards to play Whitefriars, who faredwell in 2003 . The Xaverians, despite theunfamiliar terrain at Donvale shouldprove too fast for the home team andthus take home the four points .Section 3 .A very optimistic University Blues led onfield by Matt Callery and Mick Irving willbe at home (Holland Park) to anothernewcomer , Monash Gryphons who areled by veteran, Matthew Bourbon. Infact the Gryphons started in Club XVIIIin 1990 before they joined the V .A.F .A.At home and from filtered reports oftheir training, the Blues are myselection .Old Scotch III in their debut play NorthOld Boys, who return to Club XVIII aftera seven season spell . The Northerners, whose officials have told me will field ateam of mixed experience, should winthis game by dint of that amalgam ofyouth and experience .

Old Geelong under new managementhost Emmaus St . Leos, who whenjudged on previous form should provetoo strong for their hosts .Newcomers, La Trobe welcome OldCarey to the vast spaces of theirBundoora Oval. Old Carey, whostruggled in their first season, may beout run by the Students whom it isbelieved have been training well . LaTrobe should open with victory .Old Trinity have shown signs of footballskills over the seasons but have neverbeen able to develop consistency . Todaythey host newcomers, CaulfieldGrammarians, who may find the widespaces of the Hudson Oval very testing .

0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2004

Caulfield are keen, my contacts say, butenthusiasm alone will not carry them tovictory. Old Trinity are my selection .

Condolences from all associated withClub XVIII go to Old Melburnian'sstalwar t , Michael Verge on theuntimely death of his father, Kevin overthe off season . I was particularlysaddened to receive this news as Kevinand I had shared classrooms atAssumption College many seasons ago .Club officials, please feel free to contactme either by telephone 9467 2857 . Orby e mail nknugent@alphalink .com.auby noon Monday so that your players'efforts are recognised .
