. ., FROM THE DESK OF

David Burnes looks back at the season fin-ishing this weekend . . .

ood afternoon to all followers of the VAFA in what willQc}Imost likely be my last piece of writing as President ofthe VAFA. I take this opportunity to thank all the players, officials and supporters from all clubs for the support theyhave given me over the past five years.

The network of friends that develops between followersof Amateur football never ceases to amaze me . The numberof occasions where one comes across people who follow theVAFA is a source of constant surprise . Both in business asin social circles the VAFA network is indeed vast.

My years as Chairman of the Executive and later asPresident have been made infinitely more enjoyable, and forthat matter memorable, due to the wonderful support Ihave received from Phil Stevens, Sue Anderson and in thelast few years from Brett Connell - and also in the shorttime from Angela Giles . Phil's team is extremely dedicatedand whoever takes over from me will discover they have awonderful back-up Administrative team .

My only regret in leaving this position has been afailure during my term to breakdown the "them and us"attitude that permeates many clubs with regards to theExecutive Committee . The Executive is made up of thirteengentlemen, all of whom have long club backgrounds, whosee the Executive as the next step in supporting the VAFA .The fact that they are elected to the VAFA does not immedi-ately mean that they become anti the clubs - quite the con-trary - each member in his own way is on the Executive tosupport the interests of all clubs .

Moving to this weekend's games. On Saturday OldBrighton take on the rising star of the Association St.Kevins . In 1994 St . Kevins was playing in D section - in1998 they will be playing in A section. My heartiest con-gratulations to all at St .Kevins for what they have achievedin such a short time . I hope that I am not "kiss of death" asI tip St. Kevins.

Two great rivals meet on Sunday in what should be alast man standing affair. These two sided have never met inan A section Grand Final despite the fact that they have beenin the VAFA in excess of seventy years . In 1980 they met inthe B section final and the result was a two point win to theOld Xavs . They are clearly the top two sides, with theirreserves playing in the early game also. For no other reasonthan the fact that I was once the President of Old XaveriansI tip them to win. I am sure that it will be a great game offootball and a fitting finale to a wonderful season .

1967 Carnival ~Reunion a grea tsuccess

Last Sunday sixtyguests enjoyed themselves over lunch as twenty members ofthe successful 1967 VAFA Carnival team were present tobe honored by the VAFA. Seven members came fro m afarto be present - coach Frank Dunin (Perth), Spence Williams(Bundaberg), Laurie Prosser (Smythes Creek) Ian Wood(Ancona), Bill Sykes (Benalla),Gary Crouch (Bendigo) andGraeme McLean (Wahgunyah) .

Captain John Fisher and player David Hughes bothgave stirring reminisces of the trip to Launceston thirtyyears ago . Other players not mentioned above who werepresent included Geoff Carter, Ed Murphy, Phil Parkes,Julian Nance, Lionel Smith, Geoff Ward, David Williams andChris Roach . Trainers Clarrie Thompson and Jack Dugdalecompleted the 1967 group .

The team won all three games in 1967 including theclosest call ever against Tasmania and a record winningmargin against South Australia.

An impressive list of eight players and coach f romthis team went on to play VFL (AFL) football - FrankDunin (Richmond), Gary Crouch (Essendon), John Fisher(Hawthorn), Graeme McLean (St .Kilda), Ed Murphy(Richmond), Pat Patterson (Geelong), Rod Payne(Melbourne), Bill Sykes (Fitzroy) and Geoff Ward (St.Kilda).

A great day was had by all . On behalf of the Executive, convenor Ian Munro is thanked for all his work and plan-ning which made the day such a success .

The final word. . . . .Thanks to every person who has offered their support to

me this season. Especially to David Burnes, who says heis finishing as President, I thank you for your friendship, wonderful leadership and willingness to always be there .

To the best team in the VAFA - my administrationteam - Sue. Brett and Angela. supported by Cliff, Mavis,Nancy, Agate, supergroundsmen Michael and George,Michael Sneddon and his helpers, all at Cyan Press(Printers to the VAFA) for meeting all of the VAFA's demand-ing requirements and everyone who assists my team in anyway large or small, thank you for contributing to make theVAFA such a well respected organisation .

See you all next year - my tips for this weekend • St .Kevins and Old Xaverians .

loomv Elsternwick Park provided a unique foot-galling picture last Sunday a little after 4pm as

the siren rang for three-quarter time. Most of thelarge crowd converged on the oval as the rain teemeddown, creating two large circular huddles aroundeach of the Scotch and Haileybury camps, umbrel-las shielding players and supporters from the rain .With a spot in the grand final at stake, with thirtyminutes left to play, there was an incredible intensityin those huddles - players keen to get back out andfinish the game, spectators anxious for the wait to beover and next week's spot assured . The essence ofSeptember football.

One interested spectator who didn't get wet wasNick Bourke - the Xaverians coach remained shel-tered on the pavilion balcony where he contemplatedthe impact a tough hard slog in the wet would haveon his side's opponent in today's premiership battle .And make no mistake the game was a tough hard slogas both the Cardinals and the Bloods showed a pre-paredness to do the hard things .

Like Mark Seccull . The Bloods big man threwhimself into everything last weekend, running hardand launching his large frame into an aerial contest .His efforts kept Haileybury's hopes alive for sometime, but ultimately, he could only do so much . DavidConnell and Gary Phillips both tried gallantly indefence - in the second term, particularly, they frus-trated the Cardinals efforts to score despite Scotchhaving all of the play .

With Grigg running well out of defence and JustinHosking and Andrew Smith making play in the mid-dle . the Cardinals repeatedly kicked the ball long intothe forward line where B . Phillips, Heath and Aujardwere all forced to earn their goals on hard-workingBloods defenders . Phillips had the better of his duelwith D. Seccull and when he kicked his third justbefore the half-time bell . Scotch were well-poised witha 21 point lead in greasy conditions .

The start of the third quarter was like an armwrestle as each side struggled for ascendancy . Heathmade it 27 points just after play resumed but theindomitable Wes Byrns replied quickly to show theBloods would not go lying down . Rohan Price thenbooted a long raking goal midway through the termand Scotch were looking good 25 points clear. Seccullgot one back and moments later Andrew Walden sentthe Haileybury faithful into a frenzy with a long goalon the run to bring the Bloods within 13 points . Justat that moment a shudder must have run through thecollective spine of the Scotch personnel and theirsupporters - at the ensuing centre bounce 32 of the36 players on the field were forward of the centretowards the Bloods goal - momentum - and anything

seemed possible when ~ -~they received a freekick to send the ballforward again . Butthen Kraus was knocked in the head, Seccull hit thepost and Steve Collins slotted one through from theboundary line to show that it was to be the Cardinalsday after all . Scotch emerged triumphant and rela-tively unscathed but one wonders what toll Sunday'sslog will have on the hard-running legs of the likes ofSmith, Hosking an d Goldberg .

Preview

Hosking in the first half and Smith throughou tthe game showed a return to good form against theBloods while Goldberg had, by this year's standards,a quieter afternoon : all three will have to be right onthe mark today if they are to have the better of Wood,Dann, Ford and co . Xavs get much of their drive fromthe midfield, particularly the tireless Wood, and ofcourse the efforts of ruckman and Woodrow MedalWinner Michael Blood. Blood alreadv has one JockNelson medal for B .O .G . in the Grand Final ; he'ddearly love another today but its going to be toughgoing against Cardinals ruckman Tom Wilson .Wilson, like Blood, has had an excellent year and wasagain among the Cardinals best at the weekend, dropping back into space deep in his teams' defensivearea, helping out the likes of Adam Nettleton andJeremy Laird . The duo are going to need all the helpthey can get today as they battle Xavs dynamic dou-ble pronged attack in Matt Bourke and DanRichardson. Either is capable of taking apart a sidesingle-handedly : if they're both on song, look outCardinals . Add to this combination the scoring poten-tial of Tim Ockleshaw . John Bowen, Wood and Fordand Xavs look a good thing . Holmes, Brushfield, andLandrigan can stop the wind from getting through inthe backline and rarely have a poor day : betweenthem they will variously find themselves assigned toPhillips, Aujard and Heath . The trio provide Scotchwith a variety of scoring options with either Goldbergor Hosking resting in the pocket to pick up crumbsand Xavs defenders could well have their work cutout for them if Scotch can find that extra polish andbring tne ball forward quickly. Ultimately, there isplenty of talent across the lines and from both teams, yet only one team can win . With both combatantsplaying out the Reserve grade premiership today, too,the loser of the main game may be consoled by a vic-tory in the twos . But I think not .

Nick Bourke and Xaverians to complete thefairytale that began midway through season 1996 .Old Xaverians by 31 points .

Gn a perfect day for football MHSOB and SKOBSjourneyed to Sandringham for the all important

preliminary final encounter with pre-season plans fo rboth clubs in the balance . This appeared to be a veryeven match up with both camps declaring most defi-nitely their confidence of living to fight another day, that day of course being today against Old Brightonin the all important Grand Final. St Kevin's came outon top last week by 29 points after the lead see-sawedfor three and a half quarters before St Kevin's, despitesome inaccurate kicking drew clear. Of course a dayof absolute tragedy for all involved at Melbourne Highafter much work commenced in September 1996 withthe objective of firstly promotion, and secondly a flagin September. 1997 . The Hart Foundation certainlygave the impression of delirious celebrating after lastweeks effort, but coach Tim Hart has everythingback on track to ensure that SKOBS stay on courseto ensure the ultimate goal is achieved .

REVIEW

As expected the preliminary final started at afrantic pace with Melbourne High having more use ofthe ball against a slight breeze . The tagging of MarcusDollman by Howard and with Fairchild andGrimmer checking Ryan and Gross closely, goalswere not easy to come by. Several bruising clasheswere a feature of this quarter as both sides tried togain ascendancy at the centre bounces whereMHSOB's McIntyre was working hard on Olive withboth ruckmen giving the impression that heavy bodycontact was to be the order of the day .

The second quarter was again tight with DanWoodley earning every possession and a few goalsagainst the determined 'Roo Boy' Marusic. whilstKennedy and Farquharson manned up the danger-ous Pertzel and Albergo . The loss of McIntyre dur-ing this quarter appeared a big glow for MHSOB butWebster took on the SKOBS tall timber in a lionhearted effort until the unexpected return of McIntyreafter half time .

The combatants returned to the battlefield, eachwith the intention of taking control during the 'pre-miership' quarter. Such was not the case as bothsides went goal for goal with barely a kick in it at thelast change . During this quarter Andrew Hart andAndrew McGuinness clashed heads causing theSKOB camp into changes that unsettled things asMHSOB through McCully, Johns, Cassel andSkinner tried to send their side into overdrive to gaina break before the last change .

An early goal to MHSOB sent its supporters into afrenzy but SKOBS through Keighran and Bossongtook, charge to drive the ball fonvard on numerousoccasions and finally score enough majors to ensure

victory. 'Bomber'Burden led the way inthis quarter withnumerous posses- -sions whilst bouncing Ben Do llman was on toracross half forward to provide another avenue to goal .Tilling across half back was working overtime tcstem the tide but when 'Buckets' Ryan goaled fro,the boundary line, SKOBS were home and into ASection for 1998.

PREVIEW

The weeks rest should be a big advantage for Ol dBri ghton today, but the SKOBS with two final, appearances to date have the kilometres in their legsand will be almost at home on the big ground afternumerous Elsternwick Park successes over the pasttwo seasons . On paper there appears little betweenthe two sides with Old Brighton's confidence beingbuoyed by two rather emphatic victories over theSKOBS during the season . I believe one of these t

w sides will win handsomely today and expect th eSKOBS to compete the journey in style and salute by29 points .

RESERVES

Last weeks performance by Old Brighton, with ablend of youth and experience, was superb . With afull list to choose from again, Old Brighton will be avery tough opponent for Ormond who will need toman up several of the Old Brighton ruck rovers andcentre line players . Ruck duels between McDonaldand Wolf will also be interesting but I expect OldBrighton to win the flag here by 17 points and giveBarnesy reason for celebration ,

CONGRATULATIONS

To Brett "Bomber" Burden on his achievementsas a person and as a truly great amateur footballer.Bomber "old" son . I hope you and your princessesenjoy your day today . Keep punching.

FINALEThanks to all the club correspondents and to the

REVIEW

SENIOR GRAND FINAL:

NORTH OLD BOYS VERSUS MARCELLIN

the victors go the spoils, after this years 'C'Section Grand Final, Marcellin Old Collegian s

football club will enjoy all that comes with winning aflag .

In a result that would have surprised many footballwatchers . Marcellin were able to overpower the morefancied North Old Boys . who after a week off were notable to go with the Eagles as they surged ahead in thesecond term .

To the game, and it was the Eagles, through Caffrywho posted the first major, but the NOB's then coun-tered and the two sides too'ed and fro'ed until the quar-ter time siren . North up by 3 points .

The second term though saw Marcellin power away, helping to set up victory . With Cronin shutting down .Boyle in defence, Caffry kicking big goals, andTregan owan chiming in with a couple, the Eagles piledon 7 goals to North's 2, to take a 34 point lead, and allthe game's momentum into half time. Big O'Flynn wasalso getting plenty of ball for the Eagles and his bigkicks into the forward line helped set up many of theEagles goals .

After half time North tried valiantly to get back intothe game . In the third term they were persistent anddogged, forcing the ball forward as often as they could, trying to break through a Marcellin defence that wasable to stand up to the challenge . North did outscoreMarcellin . but only by 3 goals to 2 . and the Eagles alsomanaged 5 behinds, their control of the game still evi-dent. And at the final stages, it was still Marcellin by 31points .

In a Grand Final you rarely feel like giving up hope .It is the last game for the year, and your performancewill always be remembered for what it was . So therewas to be no giving up from North in the final term .They had been chasing tails all day but managed to addanother 4 goals to their tally, a reward players likeSmith, Tonkin, Manassa and Forbes . players who.along with most of the team, had had a fantastic year offootball. only to fall one game short of the ultimateprize .

But today was Marcellin's day . They continued tocontrol the game into the last quarter and had another10 scoring shots . 3 goals and 7 behinds the result .

which was enough tosend themselves andall involved at Mar-cellin into celebratio nmode, Premiers in 1997 to the tune of 30 points .

Congratulations to Marcellin, and in particular theicaptain Dave Waters and Coach Tony Paatsch . Botlhave made this year a great one for Marcellin, and afte.a couple of years of finals defeats, they deserve thetchance to mix it with the boys just upstairs . Good luclto all in 'B' Section next year.

And to Frank Dunnell and his club captain PauO'Farrell, commiserations for the day, but well done fo:a great season . All involved will be keen to get back tc'B' grade, their stay with us a short one, but an entertaining one . Good luck for next year .

RESERVES GRAND FINAL:ST BEDES MENTONE TIGERS V. NORTH OLD BOY;

Two weeks ago these two teams met in the semifinal at Sandringham where North inflicted th i

Tigers first defeat for the year. So North would hav(been quietly confident going into the match, only tchave that confidence shattered by an inspired performance from the Tigers . The Tigers took the reins fronthe outset, and were never going to let them go . It wa:a close game in the first half though, and all spectator :were being treated to a highly skilled, fast paced gain(of football . But in the third term the Tigers broke clearand got out to a 4 and a half goal lead after kicking thffirst two majors of the last quarter. But like their senioiteammates, these NOB's were not going to go away quietly. They put together a small comeback and got tcwithin 16 points, before the Tigers put the finishinitouches on a performance that brought large smiles tcthe faces of Tigers coach Brad Berry and skipper MarlLomagno. Congratulations to both . For the Tigers, alperformed beautifully, but outstanding performance :came from, Bracchi, Furlong, Connolly an d Kinsella.

For the defeated NOB's, a day that promised scmuch was not to be, and to their team and in particular Booth and Maguire . their teams best. commiserations .

Sc to North Old Boys and St: Bedes Menton(Tigers. congratulations on your premiership winnin€performances, and to all other 'C' Section teams, weIdone on a great year of football, and I just hope to se(plenty of the same come season '98 .

Tn absolutely perfect conditions a large crow sur-rounded the Parkdale Oval in anticipation of a

Grand Final that was to be a fitting climax to DSection for 1997 . With the gates closed to all but foottraffic prior to the start of the senior game and an airof quiet expectation amongst supporters from eachclub the scene was set for a do or die battle . OldGeelong had easily won the reserve Grand Finalover Parkside. The coaches began the build up usingthe time between matches to remind players therewas no next week. Officials from both clubs were ner-vous, trying to find some task to take their mind fromthe game . The players appeared to be the mostrelaxed of all present focusing on the game ahead ofthem .

The first quarter saw Old Geelong open with theirusual level of skill but failed to capitalise up forward,a problem that would be telling in the end result .With both backlines seemingly on top OGS failed toset up scoring opportunities limiting the success oftheir forward thrusts . Beaumaris on the other handstayed in touch by making the most of every trip for-ward. At quarter time OGS lead by 5 points andseemed to have a slight advantage in the air andacross the centre . The second quarter saw OGS con-trol the first seven minutes attacking continually butbeing repelled by a very determined Sharks backline .The Sharks centre line then took control pushing upfrom defence and running into their forward line tocreate opportunities . Reidy started to get on top inthe ruck duels around the ground bringing smallermen into the game. It was man on man pressure foot-ball with neither side giving or allowed to create onopen running game. Salisbury was tagged to try andkeep him in check, which opened the door forHanrahan who would end the day with 6 goals . Asthe siren sounded Beaumaris led by 9 points with ashot to be taken on a 45 degree angle about 30metres out. The resultant goal saw them 15 points upat the long break. Both coaches spent most of thebreak refocussing their players on the all importantthird quarter. When the game restarted it was a com-mitted Sharks line up that took control winning inmost key positions . It was OGS now playing catch upfootball that just doesn't suit their game plan .Sherman went down in a heaw knock and was takenfrom the ground but Beauy continued to drive for-ward and at three quarter time had opened up a leadof 29 points. It appeared to be over to all supporters .even the strongest OGS supporters had lost a littlevoice . The Sharks opened the last quarter extendingtheir lead but OGS dug deep and started to claw theirway back into the game . Kicking 4 unanswered goalsthe Sharks runner worked overtime getting every lasteffort from the players in Blue and Gold . OGS closed

to be within 7 points (although the scoreboarcshowed 6) and the crowd were alive. The encouragement to players from both clubs was loud and stron~and it was pressure football . OGS attacked and we

r going forward through centre half forward when ~costly fumble turned possession over . Again OG ;attacked down the grandstand side with a chance tchandball inboard and an open goal from close to thfboundary line. Another costly fumble saw the ball gcout and the resultant throw in with the Shark ;rebounding into attack. Beaumaris steadied taking ~little longer to kick and wind the clock down . Aropening saw the Sharks goal after a behind wa :kicked and to enjoy a win by 14 points . Reidy woulchave been best a field as he rucked all day tirelessl`in a lion hearted effort that saw him bring the running Sharks brigade into the game . Hanrahan with Ewas a close second . Well done Brett Marchant ancthe match committee . Brett before the game wa :reflecting on his hard decision in who to leave out o.the team. The players that took the field did themselves proud and the club enjoyed the celebration ;well into Sunday. Beaumaris are also to be congratulated on their show of camaraderie when after

t game four players received medallions after missin €selection in lieu of the Executive committee members

Blues, Lions, Tigers and OT's ruleREVIEW - GRAND FINALS

SECTION 1

0 nee again fine weather greeted us and it was Uni .Blues who took full advantage of the conditions,

in their match against Old Paradians last week.

Opening strongly the Blues led well at quarter time and

with Coleman and Callery doing well up forward

looked ominous . On the other hand the OP's were

struggling up forward with Ciavola, Harris and

Vecchio struggling to shake off close checking oppo-

nents . At half time the Blues held a solid (3) goal breakwith the game very much in the balance with the OP's

Talarico, Warren and Gre en prominent . However

much like the majority of the year the Blues' secondhalf was terrific, they added (6) goals to (3) to take the

1997 Section 1 pennant . Fricker was dominant on

ball, while Hocking and Johnson were fine (4) quartercontributors, and with Jackson on fire up forward with

(5) the Blues ran on well . For the OP's Galvin, Villanti

and Porteous battled hard all day but to no avail.

SECTION 2Old Scotch had battled their way through to meet

Collegians from the first-semi final and some thoughtthat three matches in as many weeks would be a toughask for the Scotchies, however their opening burst

shocked the Lions from the beginning. The matchbegan at a furious pace and the taller Scotchies team

used the ball well to add (4) goals to the Lions' (1) . Crow

was dominating the ruck and around the ground pro-viding Love, Gross and Prendergast with plenty of

opportunities . The Lions hit back well in the secondterm with Gromotka on target up forward and

Hosking and Elg beginning to exert their influence .

Flore ntine was also looking dangerous despite closeattention from his Old Scotch opponent, and at halftime the match had swung back in favour of the Lions .

The third quarter proved to be the best quarter of foot-ball for the day with both teams attacking the ball andtheir goals with monotonous regularity . The Lion's

Johnson, Bri tten an d Champion were standout play-

ers during this time, while Hawkins an d Chapmanwere dangerous Scotchies . The final quarter began

with a(6) point advantage to the Lions however thiswas to change as the Scotchies banged home the firstto turn the match on its head. However a steadierLions unit regrouped and despite the efforts of

Thompson, Davis and Lines were too strong in the

run home. The Lions adding (6) goals to (2) to clinch

wtcT.orEi.

SECTION ( 2) BLUEIn a tight struggle

in the early match at __Scammell Reserve St .Bedes Mentone Tigers fought hard to shrug offdetermined Ormond unit, hell bent on matchingwith their more skilful opponents. Ormond begeByron on the dangerous Kingwe ll, and Ashford asloose man in defence to fill the forward's space, whiSerolin took Brown from the first bounce, wiRobbins battling both Cousins an d Will iams for tlmajor part of the day. The Tigers began the better arwith Kingwe ll booting ( 2) and Ryan, Carroll and Kiidamaging onball, the Monds were behind the eight Nfrom the start . Haines was proving a real handful fthe Tigers mid-field and combined with Gleeson arDale the Monds began to get some good run from h<back late in the term . The second quarter was equa'~as tight as both teams struggled to break free from tlother. Napier and Gangi were prominent for the Tigeras to were Pasara and Stasiak, and at the long bre<the Tigers held a solid (4) goal lead . After half time tMonds began to tire and when the Tigers slammed itheir ninth just before three quarter time the garlooked beyond the Monds . Full credit to the Monwho in the last quarter never gave in with WonnacoiHammond and Naughton battling valiantly, whStephens, Cullen and Rowan worked desperately iforward . However it was the Tigers day with Alfo(before injured), McHugh and the McShanes alsothe thick of the action all day .

SECTION (2) RE DA super opening quarter by Old Trinity in th

match against St. Leos Emmaus put paid to achance that the Two Blues' winning streak would cc

tinue . (7) goals to (1) in the first saw the Two Blues wdown at quarter time, with the OT's Passador, Kassaand Pawsey doing as they pleased up forward . ,

equally as damaging second term certainly put tgame beyond doubt and at the long break Steve Mawould well have wondered what he had done to deseisuch a brilliant half of football. While the OT's wi

dominant in most positions Daniels, Morel, McGlcand Thomas battled hard all day. and combined w

Devlin, Bonnici were fine Two Blues on the day . Ethe day belonged to the OT's who did not stop in I

second half adding another (13) goals, with (12) gckickers for the day emphasising their dominan

Arrowsmith, Shaughnessy and Davatzis were bliant all dav and relished the conditions, while Joran d Waldron were fine performers up forward .

j?r'^ JUMPIRES CORNERby Leah Gallagherand Peter Simpson

So now we have come to the final week of the year, where all the pre-season training and efforts dur-

ing the year all come down to these last 100 minutes offootball. To the teams competing this week, congratu-lations on reaching these finals and from Umpires'Corner we wish you the best.

To our top four umpires who have the seniorappointments congratulations . We hope that you ful-filled your goals with these appointments, the onlyadvice to give the guys is 'enjoy' .

PROMOTIONS

Last week in congratulating teams that haveearned promotions in the 1998 season, the fourthteam earning a place in D Section that was not record-ed was St Patri cks Mentone Football Club . Also welldone to premiers Marcellin (C Sec) and Beaumaris (DSec) .

VALE

All the umpires would like to pass on their deepes tthoughts to Richard Eastwood and family on thepassing away of Richard's father .

Keeping it all in the family last Saturday theSimpson clan just like umpiring together (or on thesame day) . At the Wick we had the brothers Peter(reserves) and Anthony (seniors) having a run aroundand also in the goals of that reserve game was Petersgodson Shannon Ryan . Hope Shannon looked after hisgodfather by taking Peter to the game but more impor-tantly buying the first round.

UMPIRE OF THE YEAR.At Vote Count Night, Amateur sponsor 'Blades

Footwear' produced an award for the Umpire of theYear with the inaugural winner Mark 'Gibbo' Gibson .Mark is a fitting recipient of this award, in the way hepresents himself on and off the field making him a rolemodel for the up and coming guys .

Poor Ross Treverton has this year been mentionedin this column on a few occasions for accidents thathave happened with a VAFA approved Sherrin . So whywould his last game of the year be any different to thestart of the season . Very early in his D Reserve Grand

Final,Ross hadpositionedhimselfwell behind the point post for an attempt at a goal bya player. The player couldn't kick straight and sent theball in Ross's direction. A pack went up with someonethumping the ball through for a behind however Rosswas only a few feet away and collected the ball smackin the face causing a split lip and blood flow . Rossbeing an ex-footballer just wanted to get into theaction .

THANK YOUThis column could not be published without the

help of the staff at Amateur Headquarters . So Simmoand Spider would like to thank : Angela for taking ourcalls and having a chat before being put through to ourselected party .

Sue for answering our concerns and pushing thedeadline back a fraction when Spider was hungoverand needed more time.

Last but not least Phil our Editor who only used thecensorship on a couple of occasions (Ed. note - twicetoday) .

SOCIAL NEWS

Final fling of the season (with partners) is theDinner Dance on 26th September at Tudor CourtReceptions. $40 see Chris Stevens (s) or MichaelLentini with numbers and money .

COACHES' CLIPBOARDAFCANAFA

COPING WITH FINALS PRESSUR Eeparing for fmals provokes a variety of responses

from players. Some may stare moronically at thefloor whilst others chatter constantly in a show of mockconfidence .

A few may be physically if and some seem less out-wardly affected, preparing for the most important day ofthe season in a thoughtful and deliberate manner . Allplayers however, will naturally be feeling some level ofapprehension . Once the game begins basic skill errorsoften seem to dominate the opening minutes of thegame as nervous players show the effects of overarousal by fumbling, giving away silly free's, forgettinginstructions and team rules and making poor decisionsunder little or no pressure .

Coaches need to develop an atmosphere conduciveto peak performance, particularly in those opening min-utes of the game, by assisting players to manage andcontrol their anxiety and arousal levels .

A number of guiding principles follow that sum-marise the key points requiring the attention of coach-es .

The major concern for a coach is to realise thatthere is a level of arousal at which players are likely to

perform at their peak. Above or below this level, theyare likely to under perform. Furthermore, this "opti-mism" level of arousal is unique to each player and isrelated to the individuals personality traits.

Observation through the season will assist thecoach in recognising these types .

Relaxation techniques will lower levels of arousalwhilst techniques such as enlivening exercise, speech-es and music will lift arousal.1 . Treat the Player as an individual.2 . Make the pre-game preparation as normal as possi-

ble.3 . When addressing your players focus on factors

other than how important the game is .4. Reduce each players uncertainty and bolster their

confidence as much as possible .5 . Be attuned to what behaviours anxious athletes

engage in.6 . Coaches need to control their own anxieties .

10 YEARS AGO - 1987Ormond were happy when the Tribunal

found the charge against champion utilityplayer Phil Mehrten not sustained .

'A' Section reporter Ross Booth andVAFA General Manager Peter French were atit yet again . Ross took two lines and picked

Old Xaverlans, Peter French equivocated fortwo pages and then summed up "their aerialstrength, pace, memories of losing last year'sGrand Final, confidence and efforts againstOrmond during the season entitled them tofavouritism in what promised to be a mostmemorable A Section Grand Final - OldXaverians for me" .

A very big crowd . sun, little breeze, jazz, children's rides - it was a magnificent day.

Old Xaverians through Martin Beattieand Peter Curtain were in control and led

4 .2 to 2 .2 . From then on Ormond through thedominance of rovers Cox and Young, the very

aggressive centre play of Phil Mehrten . thegreat defence of Scott Taylor, and with PaulNankervis showing maturity on the wing, took control and in the final three termskicked 13 .9 to 8 .8 to win 15 .11 to 12 .12 .

Xavs fought back to within 11 points beforeSteve McCooke settled the issue 'Maradonnastyle' with an angle kick off the ground .

It was the second A Section flag forcoach Mike McArthur-Allen in three years .

15 YEARS AGO - 198 2Grand Final weekend opened on a beauti-

65 YEARS AGO - 1932Old Scotch Collegians won its second suc-

cessive A Section premiership when itdefeated State Savings Bank by 28 points ina brilliant game at Elsternwick Park before acrowd of 2500 .

Old Scotch played a brilliant second termto lead 6 .12 to 3 .5 at half time . Bank were notdone with as they kicked 5 goals straight inthe third term to trail 8 .5 to 7 .16 . They wereunlucky at that stage to lose their centreman,Robertson, A Section best and fairest for theseason, and centre half back, Coutts, with aninjured shoulder. Davidson (Old Scotch)went into the ruck at this stage and dominat-ed the last quarter . Pearson (Old Scotch)kicked 4 goals to take his tally to 126 andChandler (S .S . Bank) kicked 3 to make thecentury.

The Lieutenant-Governor, Sir WilliamIrvine, presided at the Association's dinner inthe Melbourne Town Hall to honour Mr L .A.Adamson's presidency over the last 40 yearsas he was retiring from the position . (Our his-torian, Joseph Johnson, has shown this wasa misconception as Adamson did not becomepresident until 1896 - N .R .) .

They liked speeches in those days . Thetoast was proposed by Mr. W.A. Watt andsupported by Mr. R .R. Sholl . Mr L.A .Adamson replied. Mr. E.W. O'Fee (Vice-President) proposed the toast to 'KindredAssociations' . There were four replies : Mr.C .M. Hickey (Australian Football Council),Mr. R .P . 105 YEARS AGO - 1892During the 18 game season, Collegians

lost two games . Their scribe stated 'on each ofthe occasions mentioned the foreign groundand the weather were against the team' . Heslammed St. Jude's 'their ground andarrangements are of such a .nature that it willbe next to a miracle if they are ever defeatedon it .

The struggle for the premiership wasessentially between Collegians, Albertonand St . Jude's . The return match with St .

Jude's on the Warehouseman's Ground (nowthe Albert Ground) was drawn because onlygoals counted . The scores were 3 .13 to 3 .1,and Collegians claimed a moral victory with16 to 4 scoring shots .

The final between Collegians andAlberton took place on the Toorak-GrosvenorGround, attracting a large crowd . 'Really goodfootball' by both sides resulted in a premier-ship to Collegians . 12 .7 to 5 .7 .

The captain of the team was H .D. 'Grip'Johnson, a wonderful rover .
