Each small group gets an envelope with the name of a particular sport in it. Together with this are prescribed exercises they must do as a group. It is important that the exercises given to each group should not match the sport indicated; for example, for shotput the children are instructed to do jumping exercises, for the 100 m they are told to do exercises for their arms, etc. Each small group remains in a designated area. Ensure that you have the necessary equipment for the various exercises.

As soon as you are back with your group, you open the envelope and start doing as instructed in the envelope. I am going to allow you only ve minutes to nish it. When I blow the whistle again, sit down quickly in your small groups.”(See appendix 3: p. 24 for the exercise assignments.)

Characters for mime• Paul• 2-3 Christians

Mime

Narrator:“Very many years ago there was a very clever and learned young man, whose name was Saul. When Saul was a little boy, only boys went to school and their school was at the church. The priests taught them. When Saul was a boy, he too went to school at the church. He learnt from the priests about the Old Testament and all the other laws the church had at the time.”

As you continue telling the story, Saul walks in purposefully, stops and stands still, unrolls the scroll and starts reading. (See appendix 3: p. 25 for the scroll.) Saul mimics according to the narrative.

“Saul made sure that he knew the Old Testament and all the many laws very well. Those were the right things to believe. He also helped the priests by keeping an eye on other people to make sure that they kept the laws and that they believed that what the priests said was right.”

“One day Saul and the priests discovered that there were people who called themselves Christians.”

Christians enter joyfully and kneel at the cross. Saul mimics further.

“Of course Saul also heard about Jesus. Saul knew about Jesus who had walked about on earth and done many miracles, but he believed that Jesus also told people a lot of wrong things. The priests became so angry with Jesus that they saw to it that he was killed on the cross.”

“These Christians now went about everywhere telling everybody that Jesus was no longer dead. They said Jesus rose from the dead and went to heaven after a while. How on earth could people believe such nonsense?”

“These Crhistians moved about among the people and asked them to believe this too.”

One Christian walks up to Saul and ‘chats’ excitedly with him. Saul turns away rmly/chases them away. Saul is very sure of himself.

“Saul thought that what he believed was right. What these Christians believed was wrong!”

All exit.

“The worst was that the Christians were telling more and more people about Jesus. More and more people started believing that Jesus had risen from the dead and was alive! This made Saul very angry. These people believed wrongly and he would help the priests to stop them! Saul started catching the Christians...”

A Christian runs across the stage with Saul chasing him.

“...and putting them into jail. Saul wanted the people to believe the right things, not all the wrong things these people were telling. Suddenly Saul realised that the Christians had run away to other villages...”

Saul enters hurriedly, searches everywhere and exits again, running.

“These Christians did not stop believing that Jesus was alive. They started telling the people in other villages about Jesus. Many people in the other villages also started believing that Jesus was alive!”

Saul enters angrily and opens the scroll.

The groups are given the opportunity to think of a few exercises themselves and to do these. (3min)

Now give one group the opportunity to demonstrate to the others what sport they were given and which exercises would be the right ones to help them win.

Message:

The Amazing Race - 1st QUARTER:Lesson 1 21

“Saul was convinced that what he believed was right and that what the Christians believed was wrong! Saul felt he had to stop them. Would you believe it, he even got hold of a letter...”

Saul smiles happily.

“...that allowed him to go and catch the Christians in the other villages and put them into jail as well. That would teach them not to believe in wrong things! Saul immediately got hold of his men to help him and they left for the rst village, which was called Damascus...”

Christians enter on the other side, look afraid and pray. Saul walks towards them slowly and purposefully.

“Saul was on the way to Damascus, when SUDDENLY a very bright light shone on him from heaven. The light made Saul fall down.”

Shine a bright light on Saul.

Voice:“Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

Saul: “Who are you, Lord?”

Voice:“I am Jesus. It is Me you are persecuting. But get up and go to the city. You will hear there what you must do.”

The characters on stage freeze and the presenter enters reading from the Bible.

(Acts 9:7-9) “We read further that the people who were on the way with Saul were speechless. They heard the voice, but did not see anybody. When Saul rose from the ground and opened his eyes, he could not see. They took his hand and led him to Damascus. For three days he could not see and he ate or drank nothing.”

End:“Saul was SO sure that he was the one who believed correctly and that all the others believed wrongly. Saul would not listen to anybody. I think God realised that the best way to make Saul listen, was to throw him down on his face on the ground.” (Point to Saul and pick up his scroll.)

“There on the ground Saul realised that he had been the one who believed in the wrong things all along. Now what? God would surely punish him very severely because he had hurt the Christians so much.”

“Then Saul realised that God had actually come to give him three gifts. The rst gift was mercy.” (See appendix 3: p. 26 or 27 for cards for the gift bags.)

“Do you think Saul deserved the love of Jesus? No, he denitely did not deserve it, because he did not love Jesus. Do you think Saul deserved it that God should give him a chance to become a child of Jesus too? No, Saul did not deserve that: after all, he caught and beat the children of Jesus and put them into jail.”

“That it exactly what mercy means. Mercy means that God gives us something that we don’t deserve. God came to say to Saul: ‘Saul, even though you don’t deserve it, I love you very much. Although you believed in the wrong way, I will give you a chance to put it right.’”

“With the second gift God told Saul: ‘Saul, Jesus died in your place on the cross so that you need not die today. The cross is a gift to you where Jesus took away all your ugliness, all your sin, for ever. Saul, you have already been forgiven for believing so wrongly.’”

“Jesus died on the cross. He was put into a grave, but after three days he conquered death and sin. Jesus has risen, he lives. The third gift God gave Saul was a new YOU!”

”Saul accepted these gifts and his whole life changed because he believed correctly. Saul believed in the mercy of God that says: ‘Even though I deserve nothing, God loves me!’ Saul believed that he had already been forgiven because Jesus had borne his punishment on the cross. Because Saul believed correctly, his whole life changed. He realised that without God he was a ‘loser”, but God’s new gift that came to renew his life made him a winner.”

The Amazing Race - 1st QUARTER:Lesson 1 22

“If I do the wrong exercises for a particular sport, I can try and try again as hard as I can, but I will never be satised with my sport and I’ll never do well in it.”

Fetch the “Get t” box.

“In the same way I must believe the right things about myself so that my faith can grow stronger and stronger. Let’s see what we can nd in our “Get t” box if you and I believe the right things about ourselves.”

“Get t” box:Put flags with words such as: guilty, sometimes lonely, failure, ugly, worth nothing, etc. in the box. (See appendix 3: p. 28)

Activity:Take out one after the other and say something like:“If I believe wrongly about myself, I believe that I am guilty. If I believe correctly about myself, I believe... (Jesus paid my debt, I am forgiven),” and“If I believe wrongly about myself, I believe that I can do nothing right. If I believe correctly about myself, I believe... (I can do everything through Jesus who gives me strength),” etc.

Summary:

• Mark out an “athletics track” by sticking masking tape to the floor in the shape of a track and and put about six or more markers evenly around the track. (The number of markers is determined by the number of ags.) • Place the flags that were taken from the “Get fit” box at each marker:

• Divide the group into four to six smaller groups. Each group starts at a marker. • They read what is written on the flag and then discuss what the right thing is that I must believe about myself. • At the sound of a whistle, the children move/jog in slow motion to the next marker. • The group leader takes the flag, reads the word and proceeds as described above.

Application:If I believe any of these wrong things about myself, I am like an athlete who does the wrong exercises.

Small group activity - Grades 1-3:

Brainstorming: Give each group two large sheets of paper and a koki pen. • Write all the wrong things that children nowadays believe about themselves on one large sheet of paper. • Write all the right things we should believe about ourselves on the other sheet of paper. • Print the cards on the next page, cut out and give to the children to read or look up the Bible verses and discuss what the verse says about myself:
