World Geography Portfolio Instructions/Directions

OBJECTIVE 1:

Objective: IDENTIFY physical characteristics of a region or country and CREATE a map.Materials: type paper, pencils, internet, textbook, atlas, student/teacher resourcesFormat: Student created mapDirections: Formulate a hand drawn map of a region/country and identify a minimum 10 physical characteristics. Create a title and an effective map key.

Sources and Objectives: At the bottom of each page, accurately record the objective mastered AND the source (s) used for each activity. Writing must be very neat and readable. See attached handout for proper procedures for citing sources. (5 points)

Objective: EXAMINE the culture of a region or country and CONSTRUCT a culture map.Materials: type paper, pencils, internet, textbook, atlas, student/teacher resourcesFormat: Student created map (see teacher example)Directions: Create a visual portrayal of the culture and geography of a country. Follow the step by step directions below.1. Use the ABC’s of culture handout and research region/country currently in study.2. Use standard size type paper and outline the perimeter of the region or country. 3. Use various colors and personal creativity to enhance the map.4. INSIDE OF MAP should contain ONLY photos and symbols that represent culture.5. Map should include a minimum of 10 cultural identifications.6. Title your map and create a “note card” map key. (see teacher example) The “note card” key should describe the symbols inside the map drawing AND should be on the OUTSIDE of the map. Descriptions should be 1-3 sentences.

Objective: COMPARE/CONTRAST life in a foreign country to life in the United States.Materials: type paper, pencils, internet, textbook, atlas, student/teacher resourcesFormat: Double bubble map or Venn diagram (see attached examples)Directions: Research the various aspects of geography in the United States and that of another country. Artwork and photos may be used to enhance the activity. Title the chart.Identify a minimum of 8 comparisons/differences in the two countries. That means 8 ways the countries are alike and 8 ways the countries differ.

OBJECTIVE 5:

Objective: ANALYZE and SUPPORT reasons for tourism of a country or region.Materials: type paper, pencils, internet, textbook, atlas, student/teacher resourcesFormat: Matrix, Tree Map, or Bubble MapDirections: Conduct research on a country. Create a chart depicting SPECIFICpoints of interests in the country/region. Chart should include 5 SPECIFIC points of interests and WHY those interests have developed into tourists or traveler attractions. Include a minimum of 5 descriptions about EACH point of interest.

OBJECTIVE 6:

Objective: EXPLAIN three current problems of a region and DETERMINE possible solutions.Materials: type paper, pencils, internet, textbook, atlas, student/teacher resourcesFormat: Brace Map or Tree MapDirections: Conduct research on current problems of a region.

1. Identify a minimum of 3 problems; why the problems exists; how long the problems have existed; effects of the problems, and what are the possible solutions for those problems and current issues. 2. Draw the chosen map format, and record necessary information.3. Title the chart.

Objective: WRITE a one page essay PREDICTING what country you will le live in as an adult. SUPPORT reasons.

Materials: type paper, pencils, internet, textbook, students/teacher resourcesFormat: Minimum 200-300 words, typed, double spaced, 12 –font, and Times New Roman. Directions: Analyze various characteristics of studied regions. Brainstorm what factors you feel will be important to you as an adult, and choose 3 factors. Write an essay that describes what country and region you will live in and WHY. Title the essay. YOU MUST TURN IN WRITTEN ROUGH DRAFT.

OBJECTIVE 8:

Objective: JUSTIFY the connections of a region or country to the United States. Materials: type paper, pencils, internet, textbook, students/teacher resourcesFormat: Student choiceDirections: Create a chart illustrating the following: Why does this region matter to the United States? What part of this region’s history or culture is relative to the United States? (wars, economy, trade, immigration, etc…) Choose of minimum of 3 reasons. Each reason’s description should be 4 to 5 sentences in length. (8th grade sentences) You may also choose to focus on one country in the region. Objective: CREATE an effective table of contents.Materials: Student portfolio activities and standard size type paperFormat: Table of Contents/ListingDirections: Students should put all product portfolio activities in order according to World Geography rubric. Students should place personal artwork in appropriate place throughout the portfolio. Artwork must be identified on table of contents, not just labeled “artwork.” Once all work is in correct order, students should create a table of contents. EVERY PAGE OF PORTFOLIO SHOULD BE NOTED ON THE TABLE OF CONTENTS EXCEPT FOR COVER PAGE. Title the page.

OBJECTIVE 13:

Objective: PREPARE, choose, and arrange artwork/photos/images/graphics throughout portfolio and IDENTIFY the significance of each picture/graphic/Materials: Students resourcesFormat: student choiceDirections: Throughout the product portfolio process, students should work collect or create various artworks to be placed in portfolio. The artwork helps make the product portfolio unique to the student. Artwork may include computer generated photos or images, hand drawn artwork, paintings, word clouds, or calligraphy. Students must have a minimum of four different sheets of artwork. A title, caption or explanation of each piece of artwork must be included.

OBJECTIVE 12:

Objective: DESIGN a cover page for portfolio.Materials: Student resources and standard size type paperFormat: student choiceDirections: Create a cover page for portfolio that includes title, name, date, teacher, and graphic.Cover page may be typed or handwritten. Cover page should be inside of pronged folder NOT on the outside.

OBJECTIVE 15:

Objective: CONSTRUCT a neat, organized, and well developed product portfolio.Materials: Student portfolio objectivesFormat: Follow World Geography rubric and guidelines.Directions: Students should make sure all materials are completed following the World Geography portfolio guidelines.

All papers must be neat and orderly. Points will be deducted for torn, scribbled, messy, or ruffled papers. All objectives must have writing ONLY ON THE FRONT. All objectives must be completed on typing paper. Anything on notebook paper will not be graded. Any objectives not previously done must be completed to get credit for objective #14. All objectives must be inserted into sheet protectors.
