As any club knows that has hosted a futurity, there is plenty of work involved. It all begins many months prior with scheduling, finding judges, arranging for equipment and, in the case of our club, preparing the grounds. Though the workers available this year were fewer than we had when we last hosted in 2011, we still managed to put together a wonderful group of volunteers who organized a smoothly running futurity and field trials both the weekend before and following. Our sincere thanks to our judges who were a delight to have at the club and gave us their time and used their years of experience to preside over the event. Dan Rein and Troy Hoverter who judged the all age, Art Cohen and Chris Rider in the saddle for the gun dog and Judy Cohen the show. It was so special to have the pleasure of their company for a few days at the PA Brittany Club and we hope to get them back again very soon! I also want to thank all the breeders that nominated their litters for the futurity and the owners and breeders that completed the nominations, prepared their dogs and made the trip to the event. It is my sincere hope that you will continue to support the ABC Futurity program. As I said at the beginning of this write-up, hosting a futurity is a BIG job but thanks to all the wonderful volunteers that I will mention below it was a success! First of all, our chairman Steve Lauterbach, his wife Mary and my husband Ed Lehosky without whom I never would have applied for our club to host the futurity. We make a great team! Our thanks to all that helped during with the show including the Harrisville Fire Company for making us welcome in their building and providing a lunch and dinner for our participants, club members Ed & Vicki Manifold who arranged to borrow the mats for the show from the Henry County 4-H Club in Indiana and transported them to and from Indiana and to the show site, Ed and other club members who placed and taped the mats to provide a safe surface for the dogs, Les Casselberry our ring steward who kept the show moving along smoothly, our show photographer Olivia De Paulo, Sherry Stewart, Sherry Johnson, & Sandy Sargent who helped set up the raffle and sell tickets and all that donated items for the raffle and purchased tickets. The proceeds from the raffle were enough to pay for the building rental! When I begin to thank those that helped with the field portion of the futurity I must first mention the members that work to keep the Pennsylvania Club maintained for all of our events which are Steve Tubach, Joe Haubach and all those club members that come and help at our work weekends. During the running for the field futurity we had a great lunch thanks to Sherry Johnson and a number of club members who donated food, birds were planted with the help of Rick Johnson & Gene Stewart and Ed Lehosky transported foot handlers to the line for the gun dog stake which was certainly appreciated in the afternoon heat. My sincere thanks to Steve Lauterbach & Dan Riedl for riding all the braces and reporting

the running. I am certain that I probably forgot to thank someone but the efforts of ALL were appreciated during the futurity and our spring field trials. The Pennsylvania Brittany Club is a family! Like all families we don’t always agree but when there is something to be done we pull together and make it happen.Sue Lehosky

Futurity Show We started the event with the futurity show on Monday morning, April 30, at the Harrisville Fire Company. The well-maintained building with ample parking in the rear was a great location for our show. We were also gifted with a beautiful spring day which provided comfortable conditions for exhibiting dogs. Our judge, Judy Cohen, carefully examined the 12 dogs and 16 bitches and chose as her best in futurity a very handsome liver & white dog, CH Labyrinth Second Chances bred, owned and handled by Karen Hanson. Her selection for best of opposite in futurity was a lovely orange roan bitch, Diamond Hill Saradac’s Tanqueray, handled by Darlene Dow, bred by Lisa & Paul Pollock and owned by Lisa & Paul Pollock, Darlene Dow & Ed Kostka. Tango, handled co-owner by Lisa Pollock, took a third in the all age futurity the next day and also won the Dual Dog Award.

Gun Dog Futurity The 2018 Eastern Gun Dog Futurity started at 10:20 a.m. on a bright and sunny day with 65-degree weather. A bit of water on the course made walking challenging at times but kept the dogs cool. Following is a report of the running from Dan Riedl and Steve Lauterbach. Work obligations forced Dan to leave before the stake ended and Steve took over the reporting for braces 8-11. Brace 1: Birch Spring Dark Side of the Moon, JH (Apollo)Thayer-Sigmund and Fairleah’s Motorhead (Lemmy) Hlopek-Johnson. Apollo and Lemmy were cut loose in the big field east of the clubhouse. Both dogs broke away to the south before turning west. After hunting the south field, they turned north towards the orchard, hunting together and working the cover. As they worked their way to the island, Apollo had the first find of the day with a stylish point at 7:30. Apollo again struck point at 9:20, however his handler was unable to locate the bird. As we rounded the island and turned south, Lemmy dug down into the trees on the west side of the course before showing forward. At 12:35 Apollo had another point, this time a bird was successfully produced and Lemmy joined in the chase. At 13:10, Lemmy located a bird and retrieved it to hand. We crossed the creek a short time later and headed towards the outer course. At 17:40, Apollo had another find in the thick cover on the edge of the course. At the small island in the southeast corner, Lemmy struck point and successfully produced the bird. Time was called in the breakaway field with both dogs hunting forward. Brace 2: Cimarron Trail’s Mountain Meadow Wildflower (Daisy)Neff and Libertie’s Maya Have Another Mimosa? (Maya) Powell. At the breakaway, both dogs started south before turning west. Daisy made a big move toward the southwest corner of the field. At 2:45, Daisy established point on an objective and the bird was soon located with all in order. After being cut loose into the orchard, Daisy made some big moves to the west, working the objectives and lines. Maya hunted the objectives with purpose before locating a bird at 4:56 with a retrieve to hand. Maya found another bird at 7:56. At 9:20, Daisy had another find with all in order and repeated her efforts at 11:12. Daisy continued to make moves for the remaining 20 minutes and both dogs finished in the breakaway field. Brace 3: CH Sigbrit’s Still A Mystery (Misty) Sigmund and GCH Labyrinth Cheers to That, JH (Cider) Pietrzak-Dickson. Misty and Cider were the next to run and both dogs hunted together, covering

objectives. At 4:28, Cider established point, however the bird was expired. Just over a minute later, Cider found success with a beautiful point followed by a flush, chase and shot fired. We headed for the creek crossing at 14:00 and both dogs were happy to enjoy the cool water in the fast-warming weather. On the back course, the dogs continued to work together hunting objectives. At 24:00, Cider again had a productive find. Brace 4: Fairleah’s Nekoda (Neko) Wooddell-Johnson and Triumphant’s Firefly White Russian (Stryker) McCartney. The fourth brace broke away into a hot noon sun. Both dogs started fast and snappy, hunting objectives with enthusiasm. Stryker had an early point in the orchard at 4:18, however the bird could not be located. At 5:33, Neko pointed at the base of an apple tree. Stryker joined the action and a bird was produced with both handlers firing. At 8:22, the dogs again worked together and had a successful divided find. Both dogs exited the orchard at 14:05 and Neko established point a short time later on the line running south of the rock wall. After a long flushing attempt, a bird was produced with all in order. At 16:45, Stryker’s handler decided the heat was too much and elected to pick up. Neko had one last find at 25:08 and held tight through a long flushing attempt. A bird was produced and shot fired. Brace 5: Sigbrit’s Evil Side of the Road (Ren) Sigmund and Saradac’s Dangerous Diamond Caper (Caper) Pollock. After a lunch break, Ren and Caper broke away with the sun past its peak but still bright and hot. Ren made a big move, swinging east towards the new course before swinging forward to the west. Both dogs then worked hard and snappy to the north as we entered the orchard. Ren made a big move to the rock wall, swung left and headed forward to the island. At 6:33, Caper struck a beautiful, intense point well off a patch dominated by a low Hawthorne east of the rock wall. Caper’s ear was flopped back in the way that tells you the dog stuck the point hard. A long flushing attempt ensued with multiple relocations but unfortunately the bird could not be located and Caper was moved on. At 7:22, Ren established point in a feed strip with style and intensity. A bird was quickly produced and Ren’s handler took the front. Caper worked through the island, establishing another beautiful point in the trees at 10:15. After a relocation, the bird was produced with all in order. We crossed the creek and at 18:18, Caper pointed in the woods east of the course however no bird could be located. Caper struck point again two minutes later however the bird was expired. At 25:04, Ren had a find in the southeast corner of the course. The find was stylish and the bird was produced with all in order. A few seconds later, Caper pointed successfully on the north side of the outer course. Shortly before time expired, Caper had another productive find in the southeast corner of the outside course. Ren finished the course as Caper entered the breakaway field. Neither dog appeared affected

by the heat and the pair put down a beautiful run that was entertaining for all. Brace 6: Spring Hill’s Hail to Pitt Roxee (Roxee) Kennah and Hill’s Blazin’Alpine Rose (Ally)Hill. Roxee started with a big 400 yard move to the west and could be seen through the treeline running lines and hunting objectives before disappearing out of view towards the rock wall. Four minutes into the brace, Roxee had her first point and stood for several minutes of flushing. Ally tried to help but was unable to locate the bird. Finally a bird was produced with all in order. At 7:09, Roxee’s handler called point on the rock wall. Roxee stood with style and intensity as the bird was quickly produced. At 9:52, Roxee’s handler found her standing in the woods on the north side of the field. While Roxee stood on the inside of the fence, her handler had to climb the fence to execute the flush. He did so gracefully and the bird was located with all in order. We crossed the creek at 18:16 with Roxee barely pausing for a drink before continuing her big moves to the front. Roxee again had a successful find on the north side of the new course at 20:16. Ally came in to help and a small covey was produced. Three minutes later, Roxee had yet another find on the same line. As the gallery crossed the creek on the outside course, Roxee made a big move from the creek all the way to the southeast corner of the new course. That’s the kind of move that wins stakes and Roxee made several of them in this brace. Time was called as we returned to the breakaway field. As with the previous brace, the heat seemed to barely be a factor to Roxee and she ran with speed and enthusiasm throughout. Brace 7: Sigbrit’s Sugar and Spice, JH, CA (Ginger) Sigmund and Capewind’s Bosun Call (Piper) Lewandowski. The 7th brace broke away with both dogs working the field in front of the handlers. Piper soon established point on a small island in the orchard. Piper’s head was low and intense with her tail high and tight. The bird was soon produced and shot fired. Both dogs worked hard through the orchard, hitting objectives and hunting the cover. A few minutes later, Piper established point and Ginger made it a divided find. The bird was produced and retrieved to hand. After we crossed the rock wall, Ginger moved north and hunted the objectives toward the island. At 8:05, Ginger established point in the island with style and intensity. Piper briefly backed before helping Ginger

locate the bird. Two minutes later, Piper had a quick point, chase and retrieve to hand. We crossed the creek at 13:30 and both dogs were thankful for a cool drink. Piper had another productive find at 19:03 and less than a minute later, Ginger added a find of her own. At 24:07, Ginger pointed in the woods but eventually took a nonproductive. Her handler caught the front before time was called and Ginger continued to hunt hard and cover objectives. Brace 8: Fairleah’s Gambit (Chess) Johnson and CH Waypoint Deacon of the Hunt, JH (Deke) – Christnagel. Both dogs are away fast and forward in the heat of the day. 5:00-Deke is seen standing to the front with exceptional style. Handler flushes bird with dog showing outstanding derby manners. 9:00-Both dogs are moving to the front with good speed. 11:00-Deke scores again with good style. 14:00-Both dogs are moving consistently to the front, Deke the wider of the two. 17:00-Deke is seen standing again but leaves as his handler approaches. He circles around and comes back in to repoint the bird. The bird is then flushed with all in order. 21:00-Deke is seen on point again and after a brief relocation, the bird is flushed with all in order. Thom is feeling the heat as he is trying to catch up with his brace mate. 27:00-Both dogs continuing to hunt hard and forward but have noticeably shortened due to the heat. Unfortunately, Chess was not able to get a bird pointed. Brace 9: Sigbrit’s Promises to Keep (Keeper) Sigmund and Alder a Little Hankering Around (Toby) Puerner/Riedl. Both dogs are forward in the heat at moderate range requiring little handling. 5:00-Keeper points briefly and then picks up a dead bird. 14:00-Both dogs are still moving forward at moderate range even though the heat continues. 20:00-Both dogs still moving forward with plenty of gas in the tank with Toby the wider of the two. 30:00-Unfortunately this brace would go birdless. Both dogs showing heart in the heat of the day. At time, Toby was the wider of the two. Brace 10: CH Lockridge MayJay for the Love of the Game, JH (Ben) Swider and CH Labyrinth Second Chances (Wade) Sigmund. Both dogs ahead at medium range. At this point, the heat seems to still be building and seems to have affected the effort of these young dogs. 26:00-Ben scores with a find with acceptable derby manners. Both dogs finished at medium range. Brace 11: Capewind’s Breakwater (Jetty) Lewandowski. Jetty moved forward at short to medium range. She hunted diligently with a minimum of handling necessary. 8:00-Scored with a stylish find at the rock wall. She was released from this find and hunted consistently forward at short to moderate range. 9:00-Another stylish find in the feed strip. 12:00-Another find with nice style. Tanya and Jetty finished the course in the heat at short range going forward, as we ended the 2018 Eastern Futurity.

All Age Futurity The all age field futurity began promptly at 7:30 on Tuesday, May 1. Judges Dan Rein and Troy Hoverter prepared to watch the 8 dogs entered make their bid to take home the futurity prize. It was a beautiful morning but the heat that would creep in over the next few hours would have many wishing we could have run on the previous day when it was cooler. Following is a description of the running as reported by Steve Lauterbach

Brace 1: Diamond Hill Saradac’s Tanqueray (Tango) Pollock and Coveyrise Whiz Bang Sammi (Sammi) Conover. Both dogs away at 7:32 AM at moderate range, Tango slightly wider. Sammi with a non-productive at 4 minutes. Sammi scores with a pretty find at 11 minutes. Bruce’s horse leaves without him during the flush and shot. Sammi scores in short order at 13 and 17 minutes, showing broke on both finds. While Sammi is showing at short to moderate range, Tango rolls forward and has her first find at the deer blind. Tango disappears to the front, while Sammi has another find at 24 minutes. Tango is seen forward on an edge at 29. Sammi finishes at moderate range. Brace 2: KJ’s All Riled Up (Rylee) Mehring and Royal Flush Farm’s Queen of Hearts Briar Rose – Guzowski. At 2 minutes both dogs failed to negotiate the first right turn and scouts are dispatched. Both dogs are returned to judgement shortly thereafter at the 10 minute mark. Rylee returned by a scout. Briar Rose returned by a passing vehicle. Both dogs are now back on course with apparently plenty of gas left in the tank. Both dogs are fast and forward, both reaching for the front at shooting dog range. Both dogs finished forward with good speed after their prolonged absence at the beginning of the brace. Brace 3: Sam Hill’s One Wild Ryde (Ryder) Thompson and Sigbrit’s Not a Trace of Rust (Rusty) Sigmund. Both dogs away fast and forward. Rusty establishes point in the orchard at 8 minutes with all in order. Ryder appeared to have a non-productive at 5 minutes as he was seen on point but no gun was heard. Ryder was brought to the front at 15 minutes and began rolling making wider casts as we went. Rusty hunted forward at a more moderate range. Ryder continued forward at shooting dog range. Rusty went missing at 25 minutes with his scout being dispatched. Both dogs finished forward, Ryder being the stronger and wider of the two. Brace 4: Boudreaux’s Caroline (Carrie) – Pollock and Alder Sniksoh Molly (Molly) Riedl. Both dogs are away fast and forward at a nice shooting dog range, requiring a minimal of handling. Carrie is seen on point at 9 minutes. The bird was flushed with all in order. Carrie remained at a moderate shooting dog pace throughout the brace. She was forward at all times with a minimal of handling. After a very nice start, Molly became a bit sticky and turned off her ears to Dan. Her pace slowed through the woods and she became difficult to handle. She did finish with a solid broke find at time with outstanding style.

Since I worked on Membership Data for many years, I still get people asking me for help with missing magazines, dues not received, change of addresses and who to pay. I have had inquiries and responded to people in East, East Central, and East Coast Regions regarding all other kinds of topics as well. I will say that the East Central is the smallest of the 5 regions and has had probably the fewest new members or Members at Large that I have needed to contact. I have sent welcome letters to new members. I have contacted an East Coast member who had expired and gave him some names of people to contact to join a different regional club since no one had reached out to him from the club he had originally joined. Most of the help I have done has been with Secretaries and older club members. Club officers and individuals should feel free to contact me if I can help with any of your questions or issues. Leslee Masolotte – Midwest Region

Commitment to the Brittany breed as well as serving as President of the Skyline Brittany Club has led to my dedication in maintaining numerous activities for our club members. I am always looking for new Brittany owners to share breed knowledge. Helping new handlers to learn the sport of field events is important in keeping the events well attended.

Our club offers a Fun Day in June to help young dogs and new owners get started on bird work. We also have agility demonstrations and a B Match show. We finish the day with a picnic of burgers and brats as well as awarding our year end achievement awards. Our Skyline Brittany Club sends our monthly newsletter by email to both active and inactive members. Since this is of no cost to the club, we have been keeping in touch with our Brittany owners. We then follow up with phone calls to members in efforts to keep them

aware of our activities and encourage them to maintain their membership. [email protected]

Jacqui Campbell – West Coast Region

My name is Jacqui Campbell and I have been in Brittanys for the last 9 years and participate in field and confirmation finishing multiple tiles in both areas including a Dual Champion and having had a special ranked in the top 10 for the breed in 2017. I have been involved in my local Brittany Clubs for the past 6 years and am currently the 3rd V.P. of Membership for the Oregon Brittany Club and am an Appointed Director for the Washington Brittany Club. I am looking forward to connecting with each club located in the West Region to work with them to identify ways to keep their current members, encourage former members to rejoin and look at ways to get new members involved including new puppy owners from the time they get their puppy. I have been involved in Brittanys since the age of fourteen. My dogs and I enjoy hunting, fishing, and everything outdoors in South Louisiana. I have competed in Conformation, Field Trials, Hunt Tests, Junior Showmanship, NAVHDA, and NSTRA. I am Secretary of Cajun Country Brittany Club and involved in a few American Brittany Club Committees this year. Being one of the youngest members of the American Brittany Club for most of my life, I’ve grown up with many people in the American Brittany Club becoming my extended family. Field Trials

NORTHERN NEW ENGLANDOld Hill Village, NHMay 19-20, 2018

The Northern New England Brittany Club held our field trial on May 19-20, 2018 at the Franklin Falls Flood Control Area in Old Hill Village, New Hampshire. The day started gray with clouds of spring black flies, but the predicted heavy rain held off most of the day with light showers in the afternoon. The heavy ran came in the evening and Sunday brought light showers in the afternoon. We had a nice entry of 73 dogs in regular stakes with majors in two of the three adult stakes. We were able to hold all four juvenile stakes and a nice entry of 18 in our two non-regular Amateur Walking Hunting Dog stakes for the special club trophies: the Stan Kosowicz trophy on Saturday and the Ron Stevenson Memorial trophy on Sunday. The club offered donuts and coffee each morning. Club president Bryan Clark was our lunch cook on Saturday and club secretary Phil Thayer took over creating an awesome chuck wagon meal for dinner and cooking lunch on Sunday. Many others helped with bird planting, road guard, cooking and Deb Blondin was invaluable as line marshal, as were Jim Rollins, Ben and Phil Thayer as bird planters. Thank you to all who helped. Our judges were Mitchell Swierczynski, Cory Roy, Mike Blondin, John Short, Patricia Carney, Jane Bjork and Art Hembrough for the regular stakes. Thank you for their long, wet hours appraising our dogs. The Open Gun Dog major was won by Les Casselberry and his Tessa finishing her FC. The Amateur Derby with the Howard Lister and Lisa DeForest Memorial plaque went to Tania Lewandowski giving her Piper, her first points. The Amateur Puppy was won by newcomer Daniel Braga and his Tigger. Rounding out Saturday, judges Bryan Clark and Doug Phillips awarded the Stan Kosowicz Memorial trophy to the NNEBC club member who placed highest in the Amateur Walking Hunting Dog stake, which was the second-place winner Phil Thayer with Apollo. Sunday started with the major in Amateur Gun Dog going to Keri Gelenian and Roxy earning her first points. Mike Blondin and Lucy took the blue in Open Limited Gun Dog finishing her FC. Another newcomer, Jake Buchanan with his Brittany Major won Open Puppy and Tania Lewandowski won Open Derby with her Piper. The final award of the

weekend was the Ron Stevenson Memorial trophy, which goes to the winner of the Sunday Amateur Walking Hunting Dog stake this year judged by Jim Rollins and Jeff Leggio and awarded to Phil Thayer with Apollo. It was a good trial with good food and time with friends old and new, some just stopping by to say “Hi”. Of course, the dogs were the stars all weekend. Thank you for entering your dogs and pitching in to help where needed. Hope to see everyone again next year.

AsmyGoldenRetrieverwasgettingolder,Ibeganresearchinglotsofdifferentbreedstofindsomethingsmaller,withlesscoat,smart,athletic,sweet,andversatile.IfinallydecidedontheBrittany.InhonorofhowlongtookmetofindexactlywhatIwaslooking for, I named her Oakhill It’s About Time (otherwise known as Rowan). AlthoughIspecificallydecidedIwasn’tlookingforaconformationdog,IenteredRowaninherfirsttwoshowsattheageofsixmonthsaspartofhersocialization.Wehadbeentoafewhandlingclassestobrushuponmyrustyskillsandgivehersomeideawhatwasexpected.Asyoucanimagine,shedancedthroughthosetwopuppyclasseswithouteverhavingallfourfeetonthegroundandcamehomewithtwoblueribbons!Okay,chalkthatupasactivitynumberone.What’snext?Sheobviouslyneededsomeformaltraining. A number of my friends were working with a respected trainer/judge in rally and obedience so I joined them in several months of classes. Rowan progressed through the levels and mastered many rally skills like double U-turns, 270 and 360 degree turns, going out to a marker and sitting, side-stepping, etc. The only thing we still seriously struggled with was heeling at my side in a straightline!Afterall,herfavoriteactivityisrunningfulltiltthroughafield,notwalking.ShedidearnherRallyNovicetitleintwoweekends. Sport number two in her record book. Wealsotookadetourintoanagilityintrocourse.Sheabsolutelylovedit!Everyobstaclewasanexhilaratinggame.Shedidthemallasfastaspossible,flyingoverthea-frameandteeter,upontotheplatform,alittlesloweronthewalk-overandweavepoles,and diving into the tunnel. She wasn’t particular about the order on the course or whether I was anywhere around. Oh well, it was fun and we will come back to it someday, when she is a little older and possibly calmer. Anyway, we’ll count that as number three. When AKC announced the trick dog titles, and I scoffed at the idea of learning 25 tricks to get titles. We tried it and, of course, she loved it. Just a new way to play games. She demonstrated skills like catching a ball, walking backwards, rolling over, sit, stand, and down from a distance (hand signals only), balancing on a step, and push-ups. I especially appreciated it when she learned to pick uphertoysandputtheminthetoybox.So,sheisnowanAdvancedTrickDogandthatmakesfourdifferentactivities. This year she earned a title that may seem simple to many dog owners, but was really tough for Rowan. 2018 ABC International Classic

The 2018 running of the International Brittany Classics began on Monday, March 19, 2018. As in the past, we were thankful to have Purina as our sponsor for this event. They supplied all the winners with plenty of Pro Plan Performance to keep them running at full power! The grounds at the Mingo Sportsman Club in Bloomingdale were in excellent condition, but as expected, Mother Nature did her part to test our patience. Just when we thought enough was enough, a 4th n’oreaster for the month of March hit on Tuesday night, dropping 4-6 inches of white sunshine on us! After a brief weather delay, we were able to get things rolling again and finished the series with a good entry in all the stakes. We’d like to thank all our judges for their time in the saddle. We started the series with the Ron Zook Memorial Gun Dog Classic. Twenty-six entries went to the line for judges Chris Catanzarite and Jimmy Wallace. Conditions were perfect on Monday for dogs, horses and people. Tuesday’s conditions started to deteriorate as the storm approached. This year’s winner was Marjo’s Fille De La Breteigne, known as “Brie”. The 5-year-old liver and white bitch is owned by John Goldman of Doylestown, PA and handled by John Perry of Claymont, DE. Brie caught the judge’s attention with her big casts and sharp birdwork. Runner-up was Tommy Thomas’ DC/AFC TNT’s Sirius Renegade Buddy Boy. Buddy ran in the first brace, carding four clean finds and a stop to flush in the hour. Third place went to Wichita Wild Woman, a young orange and white bitch owned by Chris Roberts from Atlanta, GA, handled by Tom Tracy and TJ’s Black Diamond, owned by John and Joanne Perry finished fourth. We began the Open All Age Classic with snow still covering the hills. As the day wore on, the snow began its disappearing act. Sunshine and almost no wind prevailed throughout both days of running. Judges John Perry and Tom Oswald saw many great performances, but in the end, CVK’s Spartan King owned by Jack Alexander and handled by Tom Tracy was named winner. “Leo” filled the grounds at Mingo with one stylish find. This year’s runner-up was FC/GFC Driving Miss Daisy II, also handled by Tracy. “Daisy” is owed by Burton Wice, who made the trip from Missouri for the first time to watch “Daisy” and compete in the Amateur and derby stakes. Bob Burchett handled CH Turning Points Shenanigans to the third-place finish and Joe William’s FC/AFC JJ’s Diablo With Rusty Tears was fourth. This year, a Derby Classic was added to the series. Fourteen young entries went to the line for judges Bob Youngs and John Perry. The stake was won by one of the youngest entries. Eight-month-old WW’s Miss Wendy Peffercorn was named the winner. Handled by owner Burton Wice, “Wendee” is sired by National Field Champion Glad Run Irish. Tommy Thomas’

TNT’s Country Road Runner was placed second. “Bo” was handled by Bob Burchett due to Tommy missing two days in the saddle with a bad cold. Burchett also handled third place finisher Stellar Fifty One for owners Barry and Petra Steinmetz. Diamond Hill Jackie of Diamonds, owned by Paul and Lisa Pollock, handled by Lisa finished fourth. We finished the series with the Amateur All Age Classic. The winds kicked up a notch, making it difficult for dogs and handlers. Judges Bob Youngs and Stan Williamson saw 21 dogs come to the line. This year’s winner is fresh off his Region 4 win. Winner FC/AFC ANJ’s Ohio Hellion had two perfect finds for owner/handler Mike Poehler of Hoffman Estates, IL. “Hank” did well on these grounds last year. I think he’ll be back again. Runner-up was Joe Williams with his FC/AFC JJ’s Diablo With Rusty Tears. Williams’ FC/AFC JJ’s Alabaster Angel placed third, and NAFC/FC/AFC/GFC Ru-Jem’s “Last” Penny handled by Tommy Thomas finished in fourth place. This year’s event had one of the best entries in years. We’d like to thank everyone for coming out. We’d also like to thank the members of the Mingo Sportsman Club for their assistance in running the trail, especially chief Bill McLewis for keeping everyone fed! See everyone next year.

Our specialty was held on a wet morning at the Prince William Co. Fairgrounds. Flood producing rains had fallen for the past week, at least six inches in some areas. We Brittany folks thanked our lucky stars that our ring was not located under the tent on the saturated grass. The amply sized ring in a rooted pavilion kept dogs and handlers clean and dry. Song birds in the rafters frequently drew the dogs’ attention, especially the youngsters. Many thanks to the NVBC members who sponsored the trophies, which this year included handcrafted pottery, inlaid wood boxes and letter holders, at the specialty and supported entry shows. Thanks to Harriett Condon for recording results. Kudos to Laurie O’Donnell and Mike & Julie Lee for arranging brunch for all exhibitors and to them and Bar Rice for helping set up. Sweepstakes judge Brittany Rosener was pleased to be shown such fine young dogs. She had a patient and gentle hand for these youngsters, making their early show experience a positive one. Our judge selected the female Keili’s Hope Something To Talk About for Best in Sweepstakes and Hybritten’s King of 42nd Street for Best of Opposite Sex in Sweepstakes. Ms. Rosener selected GCHP Triumphant’s As Good As It Gets JH as the Best in Veteran Sweeps. She was thrilled with our thank you gift, a hand crafted wooden box with a Brittany inlay. We were fortunate to have Mr. James M. Fankhauser judge the regular classes and Best of Breed. He awarded Best of Breed to the male GCHP Triumphant’s As Good As It Gets JH who went on to win the Group 1 and Best in Show. His choice for Best of Opposite Sex was GCH Trios Dreams Come True TKA RN. Mr. Fankhauser’s choice for Winners Dog and a 5-point major was the 9-12 month dog Lost Oak N Labyrinth Huntin’ The Legendary Parker. Greater Indianapolis Brittany Club held its final of four specialties with a concurrent specialty May 20, 2018 in Greentown, Indiana. We would like to thank everyone who supported our shows and those who helped out at the show. It takes a village! The judges were pleasant and did fine judging and they were great to our Junior Handlers who showed their own dogs. Our fourth show was judged by Sharol Candace Way. I would like to compliment Ms. Way for her judging style. She brought all the specials and non-regular and Winners Dog and Winners Bitch back into the ring and took them around in small groups and then excused all dogs and brought them back in one at a time. The San Diego Brittany Club Specialty Show was hosted by the Los Encinos Kennel Club during the Mission Circuit Cluster on Memorial Day Weekend in Pomona, California. This year we had a great entry with a 5-point major for dogs, 4-point major for bitches, 3 veterans and 11 best of breeds. Our sweepstakes judge was Ms. Adrienne Hill, who did an excellent assessment of puppy and veteran entries. She was most pleasant with the pups and handlers, encouraging and giving all an opportunity to excel. Her choice for Best in Sweeps was Caliah’s Makes Cents, handled by her breeder David Webb and Best Opposite in Sweeps was Caliah’s Freedom to Roam, handled by breeder/owner Rick Herrera. Ms. Hill’s Best in Veteran Sweeps was Joe, GCHS Premier’s All About Avatar, owned by John and Nancy Reardon. We were pleased to have Judge Ms. Kathryn A. Cowsert as specialty judge. She gave her all to her Brittany specialty assignment and was pleasant, thorough and efficient. Trophies were provided by Brigade Photography and Arts, Deborah Frane owner and club member. The top trophies were beautifully engraved glass cutting boards with Brittany motifs. Many compliments were received from participants and recipients as to the exceptional awards. A catered luncheon followed the show with a general membership meeting and social time. The SDBC has limited

membership but with very energetic and participatory members. We are so grateful to our board and active members. We also appreciate the comradiarieship with the California Brittany Club and ongoing support and assistance provided. We look forward to a great show in 2019 and look forward to seeing all at activities throughout the year.

The California Birttany Club held our annual specialty show at the Mission Circuit cluster of shows in Pomona, California hosted this year by the Antelope Valley Kennel Club on May 27, 2018. We had an incredible turnout, a good time had by all and a very successful show. The judge for Sweepstakes was Miss Casandra Clark and the

Regular Classes were judged by r. Colin L. Hamilton. The trophies were beautiful woodworks engraved with Brittanys by Roger Kibbee and artfully displayed by Peggy Echavarria. We had a total entry of 49 brittanys, including Sweepstakes entries. David Ford prepare a table of simply delicious salads that CBC club members and Brittany exhibitors enjoyed. Our 2017 Dog of the Year Awards were presented and our General Membership meeting was held with a nice attendance. Congratulations to all of the winners at show and Dog of the Year Awards. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year, even those Northern California Brittany Club members Mark and Jackie Chrisp who came down and walked away with Best of Breed! A huge thank you to the many volunteers that work tirelessly to pull everything together at the last minute!

Adding Scent to Neuromuscular Stimulation of Puppies (Part 2 of 2)

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change over time, for better or for worse. Brains respond to repeated exercises by building connections between cells.Forexample,whenyoulearnanewdancestep,your brain creates new connections between nerve cells (like connecting wires). If you want to be a better dancer, practicing dance steps strengthens the neural pathways in your brain associated with dancing.

Throughout a canine’s life, olfactory neurons only live for 1-2 months, and then they are replaced. The more a dog smells a scent, the more his body responds by producing olfactory receptors for that specific scent. That’s one reason why, even fully trained detector dogs need maintenance training on the target odors to preserve those pathways.

You can also kickstart puppies’ olfactory development by exposing them to a wide variety of novel scents.Byintroducinganewscenttoa puppy, every day, for 3-5 seconds you may increase their future performance.Neuralpathwaysareenhancedbyexperiencewithmany,diversescentsinavarietyofconditions, including other distraction odors.

So, by introducing many new scents to puppies, and then following up with regular training on your target odors, you can help your canine partner to be an even better sniffer dog.

WhilejudgingattheCentralMaineBrittanyClubfieldtrial,I tookalunchbreakandsatnexttoan empty chair with a tomato sandwich on it. Mike Blondinwassittingontheothersideof the tomatosandwichandkeptsaying,“Takeabite,he’llneverknow."So I took a bite and it was so good, I ate half the tomato sandwich... and eventually the whole sandwich. When Johnnycameback,heasked,“Whathappenedtomysandwich?”Isaid,“Youateit.”Thiswentonforawhile until finally Mike ratted me out.After that, Johnny and I became good friends, always playing practical jokes on each other. Later, he gave me some beefsteak tomatoes from his garden.

Johnny continued to enjoy running his beloved dogsinfieldtrials.Hewouldsay,“Comeon,Twinkie,let'sgofindsomechickens!”Whilehavingfunatfieldtrials was his major objective, he finished two field champions. Then it was off to Michigan to compete in

theABCGunDogNationals.Not only did he enjoy running his dogs in fieldtrials, he andhiswifeRita ran theNorthernNewEngland field trial for many years. In addition, they wereactivemembersof theNewEnglandBrittanyChampionship Association assisting in both the wild bird championship and shooting dog championship. As chief cook and bottle washer, Johnny served lunches at the championships.

Like many of us (field trailers), Johnny started outasahunterwithhisBrittanys.Thenhediscoveredbyrunninghisdogs infield trials,hecouldextendhunting season to year round.

JohnandRitawereexceptionalpeoplewhogave back to the dog sport. They really enjoyed participating with their dogs and engaged in the camaraderieofthepeopleinvolved.Beyondenjoyingthe sport they donated their time and effort to many of the events which is a rare trait in today's world.

Johnny Poland will be missed by anyone who crossed his path.

THE AMERICAN BRITTANY CLUB 72st Annual Field & 57th Annual Show Futurity

Trial and Show to be run Spring of 2020 PURSE: 2/3 to Owner of Winner, 1/3 to Breeder of Winner

ABC Futurity Rules can be found on the ABC Website and in the ABC Policy Book CONDITIONS AND RULES FOR FUTURITY ELIGIBILITY

• The 2020 American Brittany Futurity shall be open to every Brittany bitch and her progeny whelped during the calendar year of January 1 ‐ December 31, 2018, who is owned or leased by a member of The American Brittany Club, and whose litters have been Futurity nominated with The American Brittany Club. Sires do not necessarily have to be owned/leased by an American Brittany Club member. All dams nominated and all sires bred to must be registered with AKC, CKC, or FDSB.

• The nominating breeder needs to be a current full member in Good Standing of the ABC when the litter is nominated and the closing dates of the of the Sectional Futurities in which puppies from their nominated litter compete. They must sign the Litter Nomination form, and any breeder purse checks will be paid to this designated nominated breeder. If their membership has lapsed at the time of the Sectional Futurity, the purse will revert back to the ABC Futurity Administrative Fees.

• Nominations of dams must be made within 60 days after a bitch has whelped, and a Nomination Fee of $40.00 (“First Forfeit”) must be paid at this time. This payment will entitle each puppy of the nominated litter to be entered in the ABC Futurities (Field and/or Show) after the puppy has been properly registered with AKC or FDSB. Nomination Fees are set by the ABC Board of Directors.

• Late litter nominations will be accepted with the following current fee schedule: In addition to the Nomination Fee of $40.00, late fees are $60.00 for 61‐90 days, and $100.00 for 91‐180 days. Nominations after 180 days will be accepted at the discretion and decision of the ABC Futurity Committee. The postmark will determine the fee for late nominations. The ABC Board of Directors may impose additional late fees from time to time.

• A Final Forfeit Fee, to be eligible to compete in the Sectional Futurities (Western/Central/Eastern), is due by October 1, 2019, and is submitted by the owner of the eligible puppy. Futurity Entry Fees will also be paid prior to 2020 Sectional Futurity events by the owner of the eligible puppy for each Sectional Futurity event in which the eligible puppy is entered. Final Forfeit Fees as well as Sectional Futurity Entry Fees are set by the ABC Board of Directors and subject to change.

April 21-22, 2018

Central Maine Brittany Club held its spring hunt test weekend on April 21-22 at the Kennebunk Plains Wildlife Management Area in Kennebunk, Maine with seasonal temperatures and weather. Both of the single courses with bird fields provided excellent cover and the dogs really ran well. This year we added the AKC Water Test for point breeds which drew some of our NAVHDA friends. Thanks to the judges and the gunners the braces were run on schedule with few adjustments made. Once again Howard and new CMBC president Theresa Plummer took the reins of the hunt test responsibilities from start to finish with the Shorts offering guidance if needed. CMBC members and friends took on many tasks beginning early Saturday morning and ending late Sunday afternoon. Shout-outs to all those who helped out! Once again, Eric Blanchard of the Maine Warden Service and North Woods Law dropped by. Thank you CMBC members David Herrington and Denise Hue of Pyramid Studios in Ellsworth for the donation of another one of their original creations, a beautiful custom dog bell engraved with the club’s logo and anniversary year to raffle off. Additional support came through anniversary logo-wear and food purchases. We were left smiling at the end of the day thanks to the support of each person who participated in the 2018 hunt tests in one way or another. Many folks went home with a CMBC hat, sweatshirt and also had been well fed! There is much planning that goes on behind the scenes of any event but putting feet to those plans on the day of the event itself is perhaps the greatest challenge of all. Thank you again to those who joined us. The judges for this hunt test saw some excellent dog work. Breeds represented in addition to Brittanys (both French and American) were English Setters, German Wirehair Pointers, Italian Spinnone, and German Shorthair Pointers. We do greatly appreciate each of our judges and gunners. We especially thank all the people who entered and congratulate all who qualified and especially those whose dog finished their respective hunting titles. There were several folks brand new to hunt tests who were well pleased with their qualifying ribbon! For those who didn’t bring home the orange there will always be another hunt test, on another day but the most important thing is getting out there and having fun with your dog while they enjoy doing what it was bred to do. That’s the point. Special mention that we had two Junior Handlers, Dasha Herrington who qualified her own dog and also 9-year-old Ayden Day successfully handled his grandfather’s senior hunter at the junior level! Brown Sugar Bourbon Steak Tips

½ cup bourbon½ cup brown sugar1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce¼ cup soy sauce1 medium-size yellow onion, cut crosswise into ¼-inch-thick rings2 pounds sirloin steak tips or flank steakKosher or sea saltFreshly ground black pepper

In a medium-size bowl, whisk together bourbon, brown sugar, Worcestershire, and soy sauce. Pour into a large zip-top bag; add onion and steak. Seal, squeezing to expel any air, and let meat marinate for 2 hours.When ready to cook, drain and season meat with salt and pepper.Set up your grill for direct high heat. To grill meat, sear on one side until nicely browned, 4—6 minutes. Turn meat and grill until it reaches desired doneness (4—6 minutes more for medium rare). Cook onions in a grill pan, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 10 minutes. Or cook onions directly on grill grates away from direct heat, carefully turning once, for 8—10 minutes total cooking time. 4-6 Servings

Grilled Maple Sweet Corn Salad

½ lb bacon, cooked and chopped3 ears sweet corn, husks removed1 cup sweet cherry tomatoes1 - 15 oz can black beans, drained and rinsed½ cup red onion, chopped fine1/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped½ lemon, juiced3 T olive oil3 T Maple balsamic vinegarSmoked salt and pepper

Grill corn until kernels are browned on all sides. Remove kernels from cob and place in bowl. Add remaining ingredients and toss to combine.

Lemon Blueberry Zucchini Bread

4 eggs2 cups (or less) sugar1 cup canola oil2 cups unpeeled, coarsely grated zucchini, drained slightlyZest of 1 lemon, gratedJuice of 1 lemon3 ½ cups unbleached flour1 teaspoon salt1 ½ teaspoons baking soda4 teaspoons baking powder1 cup (or more) frozen blueberries

Preheat the oven to 350º F. Beat the eggs. Add the sugar and beat until well mixed. Add the oil and beat. Add the zucchini, lemon juice, and lemon zest and mix well.In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, soda, and baking powder and add to the wet ingredients, mixing well. Gently fold in the blueberries.Pour the batter into 2 greased and floured 5 x 9-inch loaf pans. Bake approximately 55 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center of one of the loaves comes out clean.Remove from the oven and cool 10 minutes, then remove the loaves to a wire rack to continue cooling. Yield: 2 loaves

OnMay15,1929,BobbyBrandreadhisfather’s will in disbelief: I leave my residuary estate to my son Robert Brand,Jr.,butonthe condition that he resign his employment and go with my friend and bird-dog trainer, Albert Myers, to Canada, there to work as Albert’s assistant through the summer training season and thereafter through the trial season until it ends the following March, performing whatever duties Albert shall assign him. During this apprenticeship, Robert shall have absolutely no communicationswithhisfirmorcustomers.Ihavearranged this with Albert. Howcouldhisfatherhavedonethistohim?Bobbyknewhisfatherhadbeeneccentric,buttocondition his only son’s inheritance on giving up his careerasastockbrokerwithBaltimore’sprestigiousAlexGreen&Co.;unbelievable…andcertainlyillegal! He called his lawyer and best friend, Hodding Rodder, III. “No,Bobby,there’snothingillegalaboutthecondition. Doesn’t require you to murder anyone or getdivorced.Yourdadcouldhavedisinheritedyouentirely,”Roddersaid.Thechuckleinhisfriend’svoiceinfuriatedBobby.Thenthelawyeradded“Howmuchdidheleave?”

“Almostthreemillion,”Bobbyansweredgrimly. The lawyer made a quick estimate of the fees he’d collect, and smiled to himself. Bobby’sfatherhadbeenasportsman—fishing,huntingandfield-trialingthroughtheseasons—butBobbyhadfollowedthewaysofhismother’sclan.

His sports were sailing, tennis, and golf (a three handicap). His mother had seen

to that after she’d left Old BobwhenBobbywas

eleven. She’d moved back in with her

own father, Thad Green, president of AlexGreen&Co. It was not thatOldBobBrandhad

not loved his son.Butsailing

the old man. He’d grown up on a sheep farm, started his business life as a

livestock dealer, a pinhooker at the auction markets around rural Maryland. A ken judge of livestock and human nature, he’d built a meatpacking empire from this humble beginning. He’d sold the business just a yearbeforehisdeath.Nowthesonwouldhavetoearnthe big payoff, the inheritance. True to his whimsical senseofhumor,OldBobhadattachedaconditionthat would require his son to embrace his own odd pastime and come to know his friends, the small band of fanatics scattered across the continent who followed thepointingdogfield-trialsport—quiteadifferentbunch from the sailboat set. Asasmallboy,Bobbyhadattendedfieldtrialswithhisfather,listenedtohisextravagantpraiseof dogs he saw for only seconds in their hour of frantic running. How could he possibly endure a year of that, spend all his time with the roughneck Albert Myers, riding a horse countless hours in rain

ordust?Andwhatwouldhiswife,thefashionableAbigail,BelleofBaltimore,sayaboutthisridiculousforcedapprenticeship?ARandolph-MacongirlfromRichmond and a FFV, she rode to the hounds with the MarylandHunt,calledhisfather’ssport“tacky.” The father’s odd will was soon the talk of Baltimore.Bobbysawthewrylooksonthefacesof his social set everywhere-the Maryland Club, the symphony, the yacht club. Arrangements with Albert Myers were concluded rightafterOldBob’smemorialservices.AlberthadcomeupforitfromAlabama.BobbywouldreporttoUnion Springs in a month, and from there they would depart by rail for Canada. ThedaybeforehisdeparturefromBaltimore,Bobbyfinallyhadeverythingarranged.HegaveHodding Rodder careful instructions on handling the estate’sinvestments.HeandAbigailhadafinalnighton the town. She didn’t seem nearly as sorry to see himgoashe’dexpected. The train journey to Alabama was pleasant enough. He slept well on trains. In his job as stockbroker, he’d ridden the Silver Meteor twice monthlytoNewYork,arrivingatPennStationintime for breakfast at the Roosevelt Hotel, then calling on the wall Street brokerage houses to gather tips and place business, usually capping his day with a BroadwayshowandlatesupperatDelmonico’s.Untilrecently, Abigail had gone along, her days spent at the 5th Avenue stores and the Metropolitan Museum. Albert was waiting for him at the Montgomery depot.Onthe40-miledriveeasttoUnionSpringsinAlbert’snoisytruck,hegothisfirstworkorders.Hewould load the baggage car, a private one. Albert’s African-American Kennel man and scout, Willie Gilbert,wouldhelphim.(BobbyrecognizedWillie’sname;likeAlbert,WilliehadbeenalegateeinOldBob’swill.) Albert’s small bachelor bungalow stood on the outskirts of Union Springs, adjacent to his kennel and horse pasture and at the edge of the training grounds he leased in the quail-laden region known by its soil as the black-belt prairie. The bungalow held two bedrooms and a kitchen, with a cistern and outhouse in support.ThebedroomassignedtoBobbycontainedacotandadozenboxesofbackissuesoftheAmericanField,theweeklyjournaloffieldtrials. Bobbywokenextmorningtothesmellsofboiling coffee and frying sausage patties. “Williewillbehereintwentyminutes,”Albert

said.Bobbywolfeddownhisbreakfastanddonnedapair of his father’s khaki trousers and a shirt. He and theoldmanhadbeenthesamesize,sohehadsimplypacked his father’s sporting togs into a trunk. Willie arrived, and they began loading the truck withcannedgoods,kegsofflourandcornmeal,driedbean, hams, bacon sides, watermelons, saddles and tack,ropes,chains,andfinallyhay.Onthedrivetothe depot, Willie blew the horn as he passed female friends walking to their employment as domestics in the stately houses lining the streets of Union Springs, reminders of King Cotton’s reign in the region, ended seven years before by the boll weevil’s devastating arrival. Bynoon,AlberthadcrossedoffeveryitemonhisCanada checklist. Then they hauled the thirty dogs and theircrates,finishingtheloadingjustbeforetheswitchengine arrived to pull them to Montgomery to join a northbound train. AsthetrainpulledslowlyfromthestiflingMontgomeryyard,Albertsaid,“You’resleepinginthebaggagecarwithWillieandthedogs.” “Why?”blurtedanexhaustedBobby,who’dlooked forward to a Pullman berth. “BecauseWilliewon’tsleepaloneinabaggagecar.Afraidhoboswillcomeaboardandmurderhim.” Bobbystartedtosay,“Youstaywithhim,”thenrememberedthewordsofhisfather’swill,“suchdutiesasAlbertshallassign,”andbithistongue. As evening approached, each dog was taken from its crate on a rope and led to a pile of loose hay in a corner to eliminate, then allowed to run about the open floorofthecarafewminutestolimberup,eatasmallration, and drink a little water. This occupied almost two hours and would be repeated morning and evening throughout the journey, the used hay shoved out the dooraftereachsession.BobbyandWilliedidtheworkwhile Albert sat on a crate reading the Field. Allbutfiveofthedogswereyoungsters,puppiesor derbies (those coming on two years old). Most werepointers,ahalf-dozenwereEnglishsetters.Inhischildhood,Bobby’sfatherhadkeptbirddogsinthe home kennel, and a couple of his favorites had the runofthehouse.Rememberingthose,Bobbyfoundhimself enjoying the company of the dogs. Abigail preferredcats;aPersianandaMaltesealwayslurkedabouttheirBaltimorehouse.Likehisfather,Bobbyhated cats. At nightfall, Albert went forward to his Pullman berth, and Willie set up two canvas cots in the

baggage car. They left both doors open, for the air was oppressive even with the sun down. The swaying of thecarandtheclickingofwheelsquicklyputBobbyto sleep. Then Albert was shaking him awake, and he looked out on the lush corn shrouded in a morning ground fog. Albert brought sausage biscuits and coffee from the dining car for their breakfast. After the dogs were tendedto,BobbyandWilliesatintheopendoorwithlegs dangling and watched the country pass. The train occasionally stopped at villages for water and coal and to take on and off-load passengers or mail. In the night, they had passed through north Alabama, Tennessee,andKentucky;nowtheywerewellintoIndiana. After lunch (pork chop sandwiches brought by Albert from the dining car), the train entered the Indianapolis yards where their car was banged about as other cars were added and removed and the engine switched. Then they were off for Chicago, reaching the immense yards at sunset. Here the switching activity was intense, and their car was shunted across the city for attachment to a train of a different line. Finally, they were away skirting the shore of Lake Michigan toward Milwaukee, then bearing northwest across dairy-farm country, through Madison, Eau Claire,anddozensofothersmalltowns.TheyreachedSt. Paul at midnight, where again the car was banged about the yard before resuming its roll northwest across Minnesota. They changed engines at Staples. At dawn they saw lovely farm country interspersed with patches of birch and pine forest. They reached Fargo, NorthDakota,rollednorthtoGrandForks,andthenwest toward a dot on the map called Denby, advertised at“Thegeographiccenterofthecontinent.”Heretheflatfieldsseemedtostretchtoeternity.Thestopsnow were no more than a grain elevator, a wooden depot-freightoffice,andastoreortwo.FromDenby,a spur line reached north toward their rail destination, aflyspeckonthemapcalledAntler,justbelowtheCanadianborder.Theyreacheditinlateafternoon—anemptyone-roombatten-boardfreightofficeatacrossing of north and west section roads. Their car was quickly rolled onto the siding, and the engine pulled awayforitsreturntoDenby.Theengineerandfiremanwavedfinalgood-byes.Thethreemenwouldsleepasequals tonight on cots beside the baggage car, the dogs nearby on tie-out chains. Chorescompleted,Bobbywalkedoffbyhimselfdownasectionroadtoreflect.Thesilenceandemptinessengulfedhim.Asthesunfinallysetat11

At dawn two Canadian farmers arrived with teamsandflatbedwagons.BobbyandWillie,withthefarmers’ help, loaded the wagons while Albert walked a mile to an abandoned farmstead where he had a ModelTtouringcarstashedinashed.AsBobbyandWillie rode atop the wagons toward the port of entry into Canada four miles north, Albert struggled to start the Model T. Finally the nine-month-old gasoline’s vapors were ignited by the magneto-fed sparks, and Albert rattled up in a cloud of dust to join the caravan. Whilepaperswereexaminedatthebordercrossing, Albert and Willie pumped the customs clerks for information about other handlers passing through. Seventy miles lay between the border crossing and their destination-a cabin at a crossroads called Forget. Bobbythoughthenameironic.(Itwaspronouncedthe French Way, For-ga.) The cabin they’d occupy had been built and deserted by a World War veteran who, like many comrades, had received a government grant of acreage as thanks for military service. The grants were a cruel joke, for the land could not support a farmer, no matter his skill or luck, and the post-war fall in grain prices had made the occasional goodcrophardlyworththeharvest.Onthisfinallegoftheirjourney,theypasseddozensofabandonedandvandalizedveteran’scabins.Bobbyfoundthemdepressing;Willielongedtostopandsearchthemforleft-behind treasures he was sure they held. They camped for the night at an uninhabited crossroads called Amburton. Departing at dawn, they reached the camp at Forget that would be their home forthenexttwomonthsatdusk.Bobbywasobsessedby two thoughts: This is the earth’s most forsaken country, and how could my father have done this to me?
