GOLD COUNTRY WEEKEND DAFFODIL SHOW AND FESTIVAL: MARCH 16 -19, 2000 AND

SAN FRANCISCO-PORTLAND PRE-CONVENTION TOUR 2000, March 19 - 30, 2000

These will be separately planned events from the convention itself, and are considered to be unique in concept, as they will include many varied attractions. Read the September 1999, copy of the Journal (page 32-33), you will see a more detailed account of what is in store. Bob Spotts has written a very complete version of the two pre-convention tours, and all interested parties are to contact Geostar Travel Inc., 4754 Old Redwood Highway, Suite 650A, Santa Rosa, CA 95403: Toll-free 1-800-624-6633. The deadline for application to join the tours is December 15th, 1999, so please do not wait too long!

REOUEST FOR NOMINATIONS FOR PACIFIC REGIONAL DIRECTOR ADS by-laws now allow each region to elect its own officers, both my positions as Vice-President, and the Regional Director position held presently by Wayne Steele, need to be voted on this month. Wayne has completed his third year, so he must be replaced, I, on the other hand, have a final option for a third year. Please send your completed ballots to Barbara Rupers, 2245 Oak Grove Rd. NW, Salem, OR. 97304 Thank you for your cooperation.

BULB SALES Both NCDS and ODS bulb sale were extremely successful this year, as they each had fantastic support from all the growers contacted, and were attended by enthusiastic buyer-members! Surely, the 2000 Portland Convention, as well as the local shows, will have many entries from several new members, also. Mary Smith, of Martinez, California, was the NCDS bulb sale host, with ADS President Bob Spotts doing the salesmanship. The ODS sale was held, for the first time, at Tigard's (Lincoln Center-Washington Square) Cafe-Today.

NEWBIE PROGRAM With the influx of so many new members, one of you may be asked to help guide these new people through the steps of accepting the disease known as "Yellow Fever". Please remember, you were a `Newbie' once, yourself! Now look what it has done for you, total obsession of daffodils! Those of you who have never attended a national convention before, here's your chance to have some fun, and save some money, too! There is a $50.00 deduction on the registration fees for the Portland World Convention! See the article in the Journal, for the details, but what a deal, only $175, after rebate, for all the trimmings! Be sure to send in your registration before December 15, 1999, to receive the lowest rate! Check the Journal page 40 for all information. Leone Smith, registrar, P.O. Box 115, Chimacum, WA 98325, is the convention contact. Also, be sure to read Bill Tribe's great article for the convention, on pages 34 - 39, you will not want to miss that. For you juniors out there, please read Karen Fanning and Pat Dudley's article about the Amity Daffodil Festival, There's an inspirational story, if I ever saw one!

NEW MEMBERS

Let's welcome our newest members: Karen Vigeland: 3318 SE Biddle Rd. Vancouver, Washington 98683 Lynn Chiotti: 244 Shore Dr. St. Helens, Oregon 97051 Anita Hartshorn: 2605 Sakalan Indian Dr. #4 Walnut Creek, California 94595 Rupert Hugh-Jones: 1420 NW Pinecone Way #2 Corvallis, OR 97330

Two new juniors: Go, you giriS H M"f f Amanda Amador — 11925 SW Camden Ave, Beaverton, Oregon 97008 Amanda Cameron — 1820 Marquette Lane South Salem, Oregon 97306

If any of you has the opportunity to read Delia Banlchead's article about division fives, in the 1998-99 RHS "Daffodil and Tulip" year book, it's on pages' 14 — 17, and well worth the time to read. Division fives is a challenging, but most rewarding, segment of the daffodil world, and I for one, welcome articles such as hers! If you have never thought about hybridizing, this will make you think of ways to accept that challenge.

In closing, I'd like to thank everyone in the Pacific Region for a most exciting year, there are too many of you to name on an individual basis, but I feel like we're one big family, and we all have the job of stewardship of many things, it just happens to include the DAFFODIL! The Pacific Region is the largest geographical territory in the United States, and there is much potential for future growth, therefore I would love to continue being a part of that expansion. The first-ever Pacific Region Meeting at Ashland was proof that we will grow with enthusiasm, and I do appreciate everyone that had a part in that weekend! Please stay healthy and active in 2000

Happy Holidays
