F lorists’ Review is proud to present “The American Floral Trends Forecast

2016-2017,” the preeminent style report in the floral industry. Premiering in 2004, this biennial project, now in its seventh edi-tion, is developed especially for floral professionals.

Drawing inspiration from important directions in the home furnishings and fashion indus-tries, this forecast translates those trends into floral-specific in-formation — including relevant flower types and varieties as well as arrangement styles, color palettes, containers, accessories and more — all with the goal of helping you select, design and merchandise products with greater knowledge and profitability.

C lassic elements, shapes and patterns, con-temporized with an

analogous collection of pure vivid hues, define this artful, sophisticated trend. Although this look has a somewhat youth-ful vibe, because of the blend-ing of traditional elements with the bright modern palette, its appeal is ubiquitous and transcends generations. Luxe Avenue is the most current exemplification of high-end urban elegance and formality, tempered with a comfortable casualness that’s in harmony with today’s lifestyles.

The hot, full-chroma colors are primarily citrus and berry inspired, ranging from vivid red-violets, reds and pinks to brilliant red-oranges, oranges, salmons and corals – with the orange hues being slightly predominant. Accent colors include distinctive vibrant apple green, “lemon grass,” rich vio-lets and white. Gold is the most prominent metallic.

B lue—the most favored of color families—is at an apex of popularity

for interior décor and is the foundation of this trend. This current blue-based style, which also welcomes other hues, has shed its nautical and seaside influences. Instead Park Manor embraces classic centuries-old patterns, shapes and designs from a miscellany of world cultures, particularly Moroccan and Asian, blended with “raw” organic materials and handcrafted elements. The aesthetic is more provincial than metropolitan, but it’s not without sophistication.

Park Manor envelops tints, tones and shades of blue, including greenish blues and blue-violets, often in combi-nation, but the richer, deeper, darker hues, from royal and cobalt to navy and midnight, are predominant. Accompa-nying colors encompass warm hues, from yellow-greens to yellow-oranges, as well as neutrals including sandy beiges and whites, from creamy to bright. Metal-lic hues reflect aged iron, bronze and gold.

D rawing a subdued retro/vintage influ-ence from soft pastel

hues; prints, patterns and textures; and decorative ac-cessories characteristic of the 1950s, this trend maintains the midcentury nostalgia but updates its complexion and appeal for the modern era. With a “multiple-personality” versatility, Pearl Lane can span styles from homespun and casual to fun and funky to formal and elegant, depending on flower, container, accessory and design-style choices. In some incarnations, it can evoke notions of spring and weddings.

The colors in this trend’s palette are muted, washed out and almost neutral, and include blush pink, aqua, sky blue, mint green, frost white and shell gray. Pale lavenders, buttery yellows and yellow-greens can play accent roles in this scheme, and the metallics are low-luster or aged silvers, platinum and pewter.

Think traditional “garden” flowers – from roman-tic English cottage gardens to formal manicured gardens – when selecting blooms and foliages. Reflective of the vibrancy of tropical Latin American cul-

tures, this dynamic trend also has bohemian and 1960s-’70s retro molecules in its DNA. The look is bold and ener-getic, happy and youthful, soulful and artistic, from the spirited full-chroma colors and tactile textures to the multilayered mixture of patterns and prints, most prevalent of which are florals. Definitely urban, this expres-sion translates well from every day to special occasion. Think “Havana meets Hawaii and Haight-Ashbury.”

The predominant hues are fully saturated reds, purples and teals, with black as the neutral, but accents of brilliant oranges, yel-lows and greens energize the palette and take it from expanded analogous to fully polychromatic. The overall look is electric, alive and full of spirit.
