Occupation: Selectman, Surveyor, Constable, Tythingman, Representative. John Winchester Jr. was a prominent man in early Brookline town history. He drew up and signed two petitions which were presented to the Governor, Council and Assembly, one in 1700, the other in 1705, by the inhabitants of Muddy River requesting to be set off as a town by themselves and to be allowed to manage their own local affairs. The second of these petitions was granted, and Muddy River took the name of Brookline in November, 1705. John Winchester, Jr., filled these offices: Selectman, Surveyor in 1676-1694 and 1702, Constable in 1682-3, Tythingman, 1695-6, Commissioner, 1707, first Representative from Brookline in the General Assembly of Massachusetts from 1706 to 1710. Jacksons's History of Newton mentions two wives, Joanna and Hannah, but after careful research, Hotchkiss concludes that he had only one, Joanna Stevens, and that the Hannah mentioned by Jackson was undoubtedly his father’s wife, who survived the latter about three years. In 1672 when John (Jr.) was 30, he married Joanna Stevens. They had the following children: i. Joanna. Born bef 6 Sep 1674. On 5 Jun 1698 when Joanna was 23, she married Joseph Stevens, son of Timothy

On 11 May 1681, he was appointed by the General Court of Massachusetts President of the State of Maine, and he continued in that office until the arrival of Andros in 1686. He was an acknowledged leader of the popular party, and was one of those who, in 1689, signed the demand upon Gov. Andros to surrender the government. After the fall of that governor, he was again annually elected to his former offices until the grant of the new charter in 1692. He was also a judge of the Superior Court of Massachusetts from 1692 until the time of his death. Danforth was the first treasurer of Harvard College (1650-1669), and he subsequently assisted in the arrangement and care of its finances, serving as Steward until 1682. His services to that institution were numerous and, although he was not wealthy, he bequeathed to the college three valuable leases of land, 10,000 acres, in the Town of Framingham. His interest in the College was deep and continuing, and its history speaks of him as among "the earliest, most steadfast, and faithful of its friends". William Longley and turned his cattle out of the barnyard into a cornfield and lay in ambush. The trick had the desired effect to draw Mr. Longley and his sons, unarmed, to drive the cattle from the corn. He, his wife, and five of his eight children were slain. Of the three whom survived, Betty died of starvation. Lydia (b. Groton March 1, 1674) was sold to the French in Canada. She became a Roman Catholic sister of the Congregation de Notre Dame in Montreal, where she died July 20, 1758, aged 84. John (b. Groton, 1683), aged 12 at the time, remained with the Indians over 4 years. Had it not been for the determined effort of his relatives and the Massachusetts government, he probably would have become an Indian Chief. It has also been suggested that another daughter, Jemima, whom the Indians had tomahawked and scalped, was found alive, and that she survived many years, married and had children.

Residence: America On S.S. Arabella, 1630. Religion: Freeman, Mass., 18 May, 1642. From "Genealogical Record of Daniel Pond and his Descendants", by Edward Doubleday Harris: Robert Pond of Milton, the son of Robert and Mary of Dorchester, was made a freeman in 1642. He married Mary Bell and had several daughters. From the Genealogical Dictionary of New England, Savage, Vol. III, p. 453: Robert Pond of Milton, son of Robert of Dorchester, born in England, admitted freeman 18 May, 1642, married Mary Ball from Bury St. Edmunds, Co. Suffolk, had Mary b. 14 Jul., 1657, Martha, 13 Apr. 1660, and another child, possibly Sarah who married Desire Clap. He died before mid-life and she married again 3 July 1663 Nicholas Allen or Ellen, outlived him, and married Daniel Henshaw. Dr. Savage also states: A John Pond and a brother whose name is not given came to New England in 1630 with Governor Winthrop. After their arrival, Governor Winthrop wrote to his eldest son in Groton, desiring him to tell "old Pond that both his sons are well and remember their duty". Nothing more is known of John. Robert Pond, presumably his brother, settled at Dorchester, and died in 1637. His widow married Edward Shepard of Cambridge. It is known that Robert Pond and Mary Pond had a daughter Mary, 11 years old when her mother joined the Cambridge Church, who afterward married John Blackman. Evidently the widow had other children, Jonathan and Sarah, but it is not known definitely whose children they were (because of discrepancies in ages given, perhaps a mistake.) Dr. Savage believes Daniel was the son of the first Robert also, because of the similarity of family names. Furthermore, Robert's widow Mary married Edward Shepard of Cambridge. Daniel married Abigail Shepard, a daughter of the same Edward by an earlier marriage. There is, however, no positive proof, but Daniel was probably the son of Robert Pond of Dorchester, and a descendant of the Groton family. From, "A Genealogical Record of Samuel Pond and his Descendants", 1875, by Daniel Streator Pond: Robert of Milton, William of Dorchester and Daniel of Dedham were supposed to be the sons of Robert of Dorchester. There is nothing better than suppositions connecting them, save for a remarkable coincidence in the names of next generations. At the same time that Robert Pond of Milton was made a freeman (1642) there was one Samuel Pond who married and settled in Windsor, CT, He, too, might have been a son of Robert of Dorchester.

From the LDS, Salt Lake, UT, Robert of Dorchester had Samuel, Mary, William, Daniel, and Robert. Submitted by Ray McClellan of Blackfoot, Idaho, who listed his source as Genealogical Dictionary, Vol. 3, History of Franklin, Mass. Future research may find the proof, though one will probably always be faced with the problem of records that simply do not survive, and doubt may always exist on some connections. Robert married Mary Bell. She was born in Bury, St. Edmunds Co., Suffolk, England. They had the following children: 107 i. Sarah (1653-1716) ii. Mary. Born on 14 Jul 1657. iii. Martha. Catherine died in Reading, Middlesex, MA, on 12 Sep 1662; she was 32. 226 Richard Sealis. Richard died in 1656 in Scituate, Mass. Residence: Scituate, Mass. (1634). Deacon Richard Sealis was one of Mr. Lithrop's Church. He appeared in Scituate, Mass. in 1634. He joined the church in Scituate in 1637 and was elected Deacon. His daughters Hannah and Hester were born to his first wife, who died before he left England. Richard was one of the Conihasset partners in 1646. From the History of Scituate, Mass., by Samuel Dean: "The Conihassett (meaning fishing promitory) Grant was sold from Merchant Adventurers of London, Eng. to a certain company, since called the 'Conihassett partners', among them of whom was Richard Sealis. These partners appointed clerks, surveyors and agents and conducted their affairs with all the efficiency of a corporate town. They laid out and maintained their own roads until 1715; they made grants to their minister, etc. Records were kept of all transactions, conveyances, etc., in beautiful order, and today fill a large volume. Their last meeting on record was 1767". In his will, 1656, Richard Sealis termed himself a "planter". They had the following children: 113 i. Hannah (-1697) ii. Hester 230 Thomas Buckminster. Thomas died on 20 Sep 1656. Residence: London, Eng., Boston, Mass., Brookline, Mass. Thomas Buckminster, the son or grandson of the Almanac maker, came to Boston in 1640. He was made a freeman in 1646 and received a land grant at Muddy River (Brookline, Mass.), where he died in 1656. He must have had an eye for picturesque beauty, based on his selection of farmland. The name of "Buckminster" first appears in 1660; "Buckmaster" is the name given upon the records to all of the first and second generations. Child: 115 i. Mary 236 Nicholas Danforth. Born on 1 Mar 1585 in Framlingham, Suffolk, England. Nicholas died in Cambridge, Middlesex, Mass., USA, on 8 Apr 1638; he was 53. Residence: Cambridge, Mass. (1634).
