NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Fellow Members -

Lots and lots of super things going on at our Genealogy Research Center! We have received and are cataloging a fabulous collectionof research material from the Estate of Dallas W. Griffin of Mauldin, SC. Mr. Griffin was a professional genealogist. We have copies ofsome of Mr. Griffin's published books for you to view.

We are also working on a collection from Coda Home from Honea Path. Ms. Home has some great works she published as well, which are currently being scanned. There is a history of Broadmouth Baptist Church in Pelzer, SC, which includes many pictures.

Important - Beginning with this current newsletter we will be adding a portion of our current book inventory. Please be sure to read it,

and keep it. We will not be mailing out a separate book inventory because the list is huge, and we are adding to it daily.

We are very fortunate to have two volunteer students from Clemson University, and a volunteer from Erskine helping out this summeron a part time basis. We still need additional people to help out at the Research Center, even for just a few hours day. We would loveto have help with research for people who have walked in or emailed us requesting assistance with their genealogies. We also needhelp filing, typing and just making sure that books are in their proper order on the library shelves. There are so many jobs to be doneand just a couple of us doing them all. Please volunteer to help as you can.

Our Center is growing every day it seems. We have had to add new file cabinets and new materials to organize all of our donations.WE GLADLY ACCEPT DONATIONS!! Money, office supplies, notebooks, etc. These are all Tax Deductible and much needed at theCenter at this time.

The Anderson Record

WAR IN FLORIDA

Great excitement in Anderson 120 years ago.

The occasion was the departure of a company of Anderson County men for Florida to fightthe Seminole Indians. Most members of the company were from Pendleton, Anderson, An-

dersonville and Craytonville, then the only towns in the county.

Little is known of the company and its exploits. It is said to have been commanded by aman by the name of McFall, whose first lieutenant was a man named Moore. A member ofthe company wrote a book about t he Anderson unit's experiences in the Seminole War, butthe last copy known to have been in existence disappeared shortly after World War I when itwas loaned by the owner to a relative, misplaced and never returned.

IN FLORIDA, the Anderson company reportedly was under the overall command of GeneralPendleton Gaines . Many of the men contracted malaria and other tropical ailments. All suffered from lack of sufficient nutrition. Supplies to feed the fighting forces were transportedby ship from New Orleans, then carried inland by wagon trains. The Seminoles, head by Osce

ola, specialized in ambushing these wagon trains.

Osceola was eventually captured through trickery, imprisoned at Fort Moultrie, nearCharleston, and died there. Many Andersonians have seen his grave just outside on the en

trances into the Fort.

THE SEMINOLES were never conquered. Some of the tribe were transplanted in Oklahoma, but many sought refuge in the jungles and refused to be rooted out. The Seminoles still aredoing business in Florida. In fact, they claim they own Florida and have never proclaimed

allegiance to the United States.

The name Seminole means "seceders". The Seminoles split away from the Creeks. Some

authorities say they are not true Indians, having much Negro blood in their veins.

JUST HOW the Anderson company made the trip to Florida is a matter of conjecture. Onestory has it that they went by barge to Augusta, by river boat from there to Savannah, and byclipper ship from Savannah to Florida. Another version has it that the men marched overland

all the way.

These points and many others could be settled if a factual record of the company could be

found.

RUN OF THE MILL: Abnev Mill Quills-November 1961

James M. Cathcart celebrated his 52nd year of service with Anderson Mill on September 1,1899,doing general office work, Mr. Cathcart has held many positions of importance and is now the exec

utive in charge of the Anderson Mill office personnel.

Not only does Mr. Cathcart hold an important position with Anderson Mill, but he is also avaluable and prominent citizen. Mr. Cathcart was treasurer of the First Presbyterian Church for 20years and has served on he Board of Deacons. He was president of the Lions Club, is a Mason, and

for the past 20 years has been a member of the City Council in which he serves as Mayor Pro Tern.

Mr. Cathcart is quite a family man too. He and his wife are the parents of nine children, seven girls and two boys. James M. Cathcart, Jr. is office manager at Courtenay Mill, and another ^son, Edward, works in the machine shop at Anderson Mill.

Proud not only of the large number of children of his own, Mr. Cathcart boasts also the fact [that he has 17 grandchildren.

Know and loved by all the people of Anderson Mill, Mr. Cathcart has become a vital part of

his community. The people of Anderson Mill would wish for him many more happy years of service.

Google Earth for Genealogy.

While conducting genealogy records, we spend so much of our time gathering names, dates and places, but often neverget to visit these places in person. Google Earth can't step back in time, but it can bring your maps to life and help youappreciate more about the area your ancestors called home. Forthose searching the US, Canada and the UK, you'll alsoappreciate the integration between Google Earth and another great feature called Google Local. Ifyou conduct a researchfor "Rochester NY cemetery", Google will fly to Rochester and will display lettered circles (representing push pins) for cemeteries and related businesses found nearby. Just below the search box in the left margin, you will see links corresponding to the lettered pins. By clicking on a given name, Google will adjust the image slightly and will display a small call-outbox with name, address and phone information, and links to launch Google Maps or to obtain directions to or from thislocation.

This same feature can work equally well for finding churches, libraries, hotels and restaurants. In fact, ifyou plan to travelto a city for something other than genealogy, but are curious if there are any special genealogical points of interest, youcan simply execute a query for "genealogy Hartford CT" and Google Earth will flyyou to Hartford and display locations ofinterest to genealogists (10 in this case). You should then choose item A(CT Society of Genealogists), and so on.Information Layers: By now, I'm sure you can tell there is much more power in this application than can be covered in abrief article. The goal was to expose you to what is available and to guide you down the path of self-exploration. To thispoint, we've spent much of our time focused on explaining how to navigate the globe and what you can expect to find onceyou arrive at your destination. The left side navigation, however, adds just as much power to your Google Earth experienceas the actual travel from place to place.

The left side navigation has three main components in the default configuration - search, places and layers. Search hasbeen discussed earlier in this article.

Google uses a tab call Places in a similar fashion to the "my favorites" section of a web browser. Each user can add a"Placemark" (push pin) to Google Earth, automatically specifying latitude and longitude, adding title, description, style, color, view preferences and altitude for any spot on earth. Your placemarks are stored by Google Earth in a file named"myplaces.kml" and are available for one-click viewing on future sessions.

The third navigation component is called 'Layers'. Using layers is a simple way to add context to the images visible onGoogle Earth. Ifyou are having trouble getting used to the aerial view, you may choose to add roads - simply click on thebox next to roads to toggle on/off. Perhaps you'd also like to know what dining or lodging accommodations are nearby -click on the corresponding icons to toggle the markers on and off on your map. It will only be a matter of minutes beforeyou find a configuration to your liking, one providingjust enough detail but not so much as to clutter up your view of theearth.

CRYBABY BRIDGE LEGEND LIVES

It is said that if you go to Crybaby Bridge at midnight andscream, "I killed your baby!" you can hear a baby crying. Onestory behind this legend is that, supposedly, one night a youngwoman took her child out to the bridge and threw him over theedge. Another explanation is that a woman was strolling herbaby over the bridge when it was struck by a car. Althoughthere are many variations of the story, I have met many peoplewho say it is true and many others who say they know it is not.The only way to find out is to go to the famous bridge overBroadway Lake at midnight sometime and decide for yourselfwhether the story is fact or fiction.
