A State-wide campaign to promote early initiation and exclusive breast feeding was launched, in collaboration with UNICEF, on 3rd August, during the Breast Feeding Week (1st – 7th August), 2008.

Unveiling the campaign, Bihar Chief Minister, Shri Nitish Kumar said "This campaign will not be a mere ritual, but will start from State level and go down to grass roots level." According to the Government of Bihar's Coverage Evaluation Survey 2008, only 17% new born babies in Bihar received breast milk within an hour of their birth. And this is mainly due to very low female literacy rate in the State and rampant myths and misconceptions.

The objective of the breast feeding promotion campaign was, to increase the percentage of women practising early initiation of breast feeding to 60% and exclusive breast feeding to 40% by the end of year 2009.
