T T he APIC underbed air-pulsed jig effectively produces clean saleable products
from raw materials by separating particles of different densities. It can now be
equipped with JigScan to further enhance performance and ease of operation.
JigScan is a fully integrated and PLC-based automatic jig control system which:
s reduces or eliminates much of the operator attention needed for efficient operation of a jig;
s provides improved control over product quality;
s provides higher yields of ‘on-specification’ product;
s automatically raises an alarm if separation efficiency drops; and
s automatically sequences start-ups and shut-downs to optimise production.
JigScan has been used industrially with great success in the coal, ferrous ores and wastes
industries. It is supplied exclusively with new APIC Jigs .

How JigScan works
P P articles of different densities in a homogeneous
bed of solid material are stratified by water
pulsed through the jig’s bed plate. JigScan ensures
that optimal stratification, steady product quality and
highest possible yields are obtained by:
s Maintaining a steady water-pulse shape even
when the feed or throughput of material changes
s Adjusting the pulsing energy function of the bed
mass
s Closely controlling the discharge of heavy
material from the stratified bed.
Every time JigScan’s powerful high scan
frequency PLC system reads the jig’s sensors,
it issues algorithm-based control commands. The
system can control the jigging air pressure, theopening and closing times of the valves, the
average water levels in the air chambers and the
density cut-point at the jig discharge gate. A
measurement and graphical display can be
provided of the water and air pressures in the jig,
the variation of air pressure and the water velocity
pulse waveform in each compartment and the
variation of bed density during each pulse at a
chosen position above the bed plate.
APIC Jig / JigScan development
T T he APIC Jig is the key equipment around which
the BATEMAN process for coal cleaning,
upgrading of ores and recovery of metal from slag is
based. The jig was initially designed and produced
by FCB in France, and is now part of the BATEMAN
range of products. Over decades it has been
developed and proven in industry and represents the
current state-of-the-art in jigging technology.
The JigScan jig control systems are the
result of 15 years of development by JKMRC, and
are now sold exclusively by BATEMAN.
BATEMAN and its partners
B B ATEMAN entered into a partnership with other leading organisations
and experts in jigging so as to bring the best possible solution to the
client. This partnership collaborates fully in the development of jigging
technology and offers jigs with various levels of control, depending upon
client requirements and the type of materials to be treated.
s BATEMAN is a process engineering and project management
company with a significant track record in the design and
construction of specialised equipment and production plants for coal
washing, the upgrading of ores and the recovery of metal from slag
using gravity-separation techniques. It acquires new technologies
while improving its own technology and promotes complementary
relationships in order to maintain a competitive advantage.
s Mintek, South Africa’s national minerals-research organisation, works
with industry and other research organisations worldwide to research,
develop and implement new and improved technologies in the
minerals and metallurgical sectors. Many advances in extraction, refining and manufacturing technology that originated in South Africa
have been successfully exported and Mintek has become an
international player in this field.
s JKMRC (the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre) is an
internationally renowned self-funded research institute and consulting
organisation in The University of Queensland. It works closely with the
mining industry in Australia and overseas to develop and apply new
knowledge in mining and in mineral and coal processing. It has for
many years been a world leader in the application of modelling and
computer simulation to mineral process design and optimisation.
