The Application of Laser to Otolaryngology

The au tho r employed lasers wi th different power select ively for treating var ious tesions. These laser - therapies include treatment of chronic hype r t roph ic rh in i t i s by us ing 40 Wat t CO 2 laser and the treatment of nevi and war ts in the ear and nose ~r on the head and neck, and localized telangiectasis and benign tumours by em- p loy ing 10 Wat t CO 2 laser.

Some tumours could be reseeted and vaporized by laser w i t h fu l l exposure of the lesion in the case of laryngeal carcinoma, some skin and in t raerania l tumours , and max i l l a r s inus cancer w h i c h is treated by c ryo the rapy and lase r - therapy in c tnnbinat ion. Some treated cases have been fol lowed up for 3 - - 5 years w i thou t s igns of recurrence.

Superf ic ia l benign and mal ignant tumours over large areas such as angioma and meIanoma can be treated w i t h h igh energy light beam (a rgon and CO z laser) by sCanning.

This paper presents an experiment of aud i to ry bra ins tem evoked potential react ion ( A B R ) test on i~ner ear membrane lymphat ic hydrc, ps in guinea pigs.

40 guinea pigs Underwent endolymphat ic sac obl i tera t ion opera t ion as described by Kimura , Pos topera t ive ly , 23 guinea pigs eould fu l f i l l the condi t ions needed, i . e . , the animals su rv ived f rom the prc, cedure w i thou t dist inct nys tagmus but w i th o b v i o u s l y abnormal ABR wave .

Typ ica l postoperat ive ABR wave showed protracted la tency cf I - - | and I - - V w i t h a normal la tency of [ - - [ , and wave I was o b v i o u s l y prelc.nged wi th its ampl i tude reduced.

C o n v e x i t y of the Reissner ' s membrane and slight hydrops c f the saccule and di lated utricles were found in the cochlea scala media.

It is interest ing that in one ease pathological f ibros is was f c u n d wi th f ibrous connect ive t issue f i l l ing the cochlea but wi thou t apparent in f lammat ion . At the operated site a lot of sear and newly formed bone tissue "developed but the vestibule showed collapsed saccule and atrophied epithelial cells.
