THE APRIL MEETING IN NEW YORK The six hundred twenty-second meeting of the American Mathe- matical Society was held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York on April 12-15, 1965. There were 456 persons registered, including 374 members of the Society. By invitation of the Committee to Select Hour Speakers for East- ern Sectional Meetings, Professor James Eells, Jr. of Cornell Univer- sity spoke on A setting for global analysis, on the afternoon of Mon- day, April 12. Professor John Milnor introduced the speaker. By invitation of the same committee, Professor Robert D. M. Accola of Brown University addressed the Society on Some classical theorems on open Riemann surfaces, on the morning of Tuesday, April 13. Professor Hans Rademacher presided. On Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday and Thursday, April 13-15, there was a Symposium on Magneto-fluid and Plasma Dy- namics. The subject was chosen by the Committee on Applied Mathe- matics. THE APRIL MEETING IN NEW YORK

The six hundred twenty-second meeting of the American Mathe­matical Society was held a t the Waldorf-Astoria in New York on April 12-15, 1965. There were 456 persons registered, including 374 members of the Society.

By invitation of the same committee, Professor Robert D. M. Accola of Brown University addressed the Society on Some classical theorems on open Riemann surfaces, on the morning of Tuesday, April 13. Professor Hans Rademacher presided.

On Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday and Thursday, April 13-15, there was a Symposium on Magneto-fluid and Plasma Dy­namics. The subject was chosen by the Committee on Applied Mathe­matics. Financial support came from the Air Force Office of Scien­tific Research and the U. S. Army Research Office (Durham). The Invitations Committee, responsible for the planning of the program and the choice of speakers, consisted of Professor Harold Grad, Chairman, Dr. Andrew Lenard, Professor Marshall N. The Council designated Professor Jiirgen Moser to replace Pro­fessor Louis Nirenberg as an editor of the Transactions during Profes­sor Nirenberg's absence from the country from April 20 to October, 1965.

The Council recommended to the Board of Trustees that one extra volume of the Transactions be published in 1966.

The report of the Committee on Applied Mathematics that the Society hold at the April, 1966, meeting in New York a Symposium on Mathematical Aspects of Computer Science in collaboration with the Association for Computing Machinery, and the report of the Organizing Committee for Summer Institutes that the Society con­duct an Institute in the Summer of 1966 on Entire Functions and Related Parts of Analysis were approved.

Professor Harold Grad was appointed editor of the Proceedings of the April, 1965, Symposium on Magneto Fluid and Plasma Dy­namics.

The Council urged the Executive Committee at its next meeting to formulate a policy statement on travel grants for mathematicians to attend the 1966 International Mathematical Congress in Moscow, stressing the importance of insuring sufficient financial support, so that there would be adequate representation of American mathe­maticians.

The Council recommended that changes be made in the By-laws to introduce Mathematics of Computation as an official Society pub­lication and to create positions on the Council for the Editorial Board. The proposed changes will be presented to the membership at the August 1965 meeting of the Society.
