    Breeding

The opening session, moderated by DerekThompson, was on breeding. The initialquestion, how do we improve the breed, centred around good conformation, goodfoundation mares and the price of stallionsaround the world.

Dr Andrew Dalgliesh, senior vet at AlWathba Stud and Endurance Stableagreed with Catherine Labarthe, breeder oftop-rated Arabian, Djainka Des Forges,

  • T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

that whilst the cost was important, so wasselecting the right stallion for the mare, notnecessarily the most expensive orfashionable.

Michelle Morgan of Mandolin Hill Farm inthe USA, told the delegates how, followinga previousWAHRC, they had lowered theprice of the stallions that they stood inorder to encourage more breeding. However breeding for free in the USA,unlike in the UAE, would not be possiblethough she applauded the idea as a way ofincreasing production.

Breeders premiums were approved by theconference, as a way of encouragingbreeders to produce more stock and to stayinvolved once their horses had been sold.

Moving on to embryo transfer, Khalid AlNaboodah, a leading owner- breeder in theUAE, voiced his concern, feeling thatproducing more than four foals could beconsidered greedy and that on the whole itwas a very costly method of production.

Dr Dalgliesh was in favour of embrotransfer as it is a way of speeding up the

reproduction process. He also felt it wasthe best way to look after the more fragilebroodmares, those with age or healthissues (for example, pelvic injuries). Hereminded the audience that the technologyhad been around for thirty years and it wasactually quite difficult to produce morethan three embryos per year, so fears ofoverproduction were unfounded.

The Director of Janow Podlaski State Studin Poland, Dr Marek Trela, was moreconservative. He told the delegates that inPoland, the mare was allowed to have oneextra foal per year, but the other foal mustbe produced naturally and that therecipient mare must be an Arabian. However he agreed that it was beneficial inmares that have problems.

Manuela Daveiro, wife of Dr Paul Daviero, owners and breeders of Ameretto, used hisdam,Win Taouy as an example of a marefor whom embryo transfer was necessary,as she suffered from retention of theplacenta following foaling.

With regards breeders premiums, she saidthere were none in Germany, howevertheir horses were at stud in France and sothey were qualified. She felt that that theadditional money they had received hadallowed them to improve their stock, whichof course was a great help to theiroperation.

Catherine Labarthe, also agreed thatembyro transfer was helpful for the morefragile mares, but agreed it needs to be wellregulated.

At the end of the discussion, the audiencepoll revealed the majority were in favour ofembryo transfer, but it should be limited toone foal per mare per year.

    Racing and Training

This session was moderated by Pat Buckleyand produced a very lively discussionabout handicapping. Naturally this varieswidely from country to country - somehave one handicapper, others more.Clearly a number of the delegates felt thatin some cases, the situation did not seem tobe working effectively, or that their horsesfuture should rest with the opinion of oneperson.

However it should not be forgotten that thehorse population in these countries varieswidely too, so it is difficult to produce arule to suit each situation, though the pollat the end indicated that threehandicappers were preferable for themajority of the audience. In the UAE thereare so many horses, that options for theless able were very limited not a situationfamiliar in the UK or USA where numbersof registered racing Arabians are at an alltime low.

As discussed at last years conference theissue of transportation and varyingquarantine regulations, particularly in theGulf, was again brought up and this isclearly an ongoing situation which willneed to be addressed in order to progressthe international racing programme. The topic of racing two year olds was alsoraised and all were in agreement that it wasnot to be encouraged as they are stillimmature. It was also noted that even atthree or four years, many were not readyeither physically or mentally.

    Weight Loss Control

The final session of the day centred roundthe work of Dr GeorgeWilson and histeam at JohnMoores Liverpool University, funded by HH SheikhMansoor Festival.

Dr GeorgeWilson produced their lateststudy showing howmale and femalejockeys routinely presented a higher bodyfat percentage than other elite athletes anddiscussed how, by using tailored diets andexercise, this could be reduced.

He also voiced his concern over dangerousand outdated practices of weight loss suchas long periods spent it the sauna or sweatbox often without any medical advice or

guidance. This was sadly illustrated all toowell when one of the lady jockeys feltunwell in the unsaddling area followingher race on Sunday. Whilst she quicklyrecovered, too long in the sauna was givenas the reason for her feeling faint.

Australian, Chris Watson, Manager of theApprentice Training Centre in Turkey, explained that there were rules about thisin Australia, but noted that once jockeyshave qualified, it is hard to regulate themethods they choose to make weight andthis is where problems can arise.

Professional jockey Ahmed Ajtebi, who hasridden all over the world, raised the pointthat he finds it harder to control his weightin colder climates than in warmer ones.

Dr Jamal Hout stressed the importance ofgood diet and put forward the theory thatjockeys should avoid foods that they wereallergic to, in order to assist weight control.

At the end of the session, Ms Lara Sawayaappointed Kai Schirman, Director of the

Apprentice Jockey School in Germany tobe the official chaperone for the Festivaljockeys in future events.

The day concluded with fabulousWelcome Dinner at Endorfina, in the oldtown area of Warsaw. Guests were greetedby waiters in historic Polish costumeoffering the traditional greeting of breadand salt and gathered prior to the meal, inthe restaurants beautiful gardens.

WAHRC Day TwoRules, Conditions and Regulations

The opening session on the second day wasmoderated by DrMohamed AlMachmoum, an owner-breeder inMorocco. The initial discussion focussedon the varying rules and regulationsbetween countries, and the differentregulatory bodies worldwide.

IanWilliams (former Director of FEIEndurance) had a warning for thedelegates. One of the temptations for anygoverning body is a knee jerk reaction interms of rules and regulations somethinghappens and the initial reaction is we needa new rule and the whole thing becomesmore and more complex. This results inless commonality, so that is an area weneed to be very careful about.

Richard Lancaster (Director, ShadwellStud) began by thanking SheikhMansoorbin Zayed for allowing such a gathering sothat we can all exchange ideas. The greatthing, he continued, whether it isbreeding or racing, is to have a levelplaying field for everyone. Withoutintegrity, the general public will see thatwe are not working together and turnaway.

Arabian racing is a very new sport. Whenyou look at how long Thoroughbred racinghas been around, Thoroughbred racinghas its problems too. For example, thediffering countrys views on the subject ofanabolic steroids has been very much tothe fore of Thoroughbred news recently.

For Arabian racing, sometimes things area question of compromise, not one sectionsticking rigidly to their viewpoint, becausewhen you have so many people taking part,

there are different considerations andcultures to be accommodated.

Representing the USA were Kathy Smoke(Chairman of the Arabian Jockey Club, owner breeder) and Remy Belloq(Executive Director, North AmericanRacing Academy). Both made the pointthat in America, each states wasresponsible for its own rules andregulations, including those regardinggambling. Therefore, if single a countrycant even harmonise its own rules, it ishard to envisage a set of rules that could beagreed and would work effectively acrossthe world.

Smoke used the issue of embryo transfer asan example, as they have a variety of racingin the US - harness racing and QuarterHorses as well as Arabians andThoroughbreds. Our friends in QuarterHorse racing took the US Government tocourt, not for the breed, not to take intoconsideration that it was an animal. Theyused the argument that limiting thenumber of embryos that could betransferred was a restriction of free tradeand they won, so thats the law.

So now, I have to abide by my countryslaw, so the AJC and the Arabian Registrycannot limit the number of transfers. Withthe IFAHR International Agreement, Icannot sign up to an article that wouldlimit that number.

Williams felt that the rules of racing were abetter place to start seeking commonality,we have regulations that govern on thetrack, those running the track, the welfareof the horse and the integrity of the horsein the sport.

Jean-Pierre Deroubaix (bloodstock agent)stated that in France, they do not allow fullsibling embryo transfer horses of the sameage, to run in the same race. He also madethe point that there should be a connectionbetween the rules of Arabian racing andThoroughbred racing, as on many of thebig Thoroughbred meetings, they alsohave an Arabian Group race (e.g. on Prixde lArc de Triomphe day, they run theArabianWorld Cup).

He welcomedMs Sawayas encouragementfor IFAHR and theWorld Arabian HorseOrganisation (WAHO) to work together, but felt that the International Federation ofHorse Racing Authorities (IFHA), whoregulate Thorougbreds, should also beconsidered.

The Vice Chairman of IFAHR, GennyHaynes, then spoke about the InternationalAgreement. We distributed the agreementto the 28 member countries at the lastgeneral assembly.

She confirmed that each country is entitledto select which articles they agree to, if notall of them and that some countries are stilldiscussing with their authorities, whichthey have to do, before they can come backto IFAHR.

She continued. Though some countrieshave not yet responded at all, its anongoing process, something that we havebeen working on for a while.

Lancaster then observed that this is a topicwhich has been under discussion for a longtime and that now was the time to press on,as otherwise there will always bedisharmony. Until you can get a generalconsensus, you will not move forward. Hesaid.

From a breeding perspective, he remindedthe conference that we are still in therelative infancy, compared to theThoroughbred Stud Book. Im sure thatthere were many problems over the yearsin recognising various bloodlines in theThoroughbred stud book, so I dont thinkwe are any different in taking time inreaching a consensus.

    Women in Racing

Denise Gault (owner-breeder, bloodstockagent, Chief Steward of the Arabian RacingCup), described how she felt that theinvolvement in the HH SheikhMansoorFestival, was like being part of one largefamily. She welcomed the Festivalsinitiatives and the support of Ms Sawaya. She described how she had beenintroduced to Ms Sawaya by Kathy Smokeand how grateful they were for the HHSheikha Fatima bint Mubarak DarleyAwards in supporting women in Arabianracing.

Dual Darley Award winning trainer, KarenVan Den Bos, told how she had gainedwork experience with Denise Gault in theUSA, which had been instigated by readingabout Gault in Denise Hearsts publicationArabian HorseWorld.

The panel was asked how they would feelif they were told that they were not as goodas the men within horse racing.

One has to just believe in ones ability andmove forward despite any adversecomments from our male counterparts, replied Ms Sawaya,

The panel agreed with this sentiment.Whilst there is still prejudice in someareas, women are achieving more in higherpositions, including in Arabian racing.

    Media, PR & Communications

The last panel of the day was moderated byDerek Thompson, who asked what morecan be done to inform people aboutArabian racing.

Martin Stevens of the Racing Post pointedout that there was a constraint on howmuch news can go in the print editions. However, this is not a problem with digital

media, as pointed out by Debbie Burt; hernew publication, The Arabian Racehorse,is entirely digital and so there is no limit tothe number of pages. She also stated thatArabian Finish Lines in America, forwhom she also writes, will be going digitallater this month. Stephanie Corum, Editorin Chief of Arabian Finish Lines confirmedthis.

Thanks to the support of the HH SheikhMansoor Festival, the Racing Post nowpublishes full colour racecards of everyArabian race in the UK, though there arestill issues involving the media rights of thevarious UK racing channels, limiting thebroadcasting of Arabian races. GennyHaynes responded to this from theaudience, to confirm that they were still indiscussions with the broadcasters, howevershe warned that broadcasting of racing inthe UK was likely to change from the endof 2016, when many UK racecourse mediarights come up for review.

  • T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

The panel members agreed that moreinformation needed to be shared by thevarious organisations and connectionswithin Arabian racing, so that they maypublicise it to the world. A central databasefor journalists, where the variousorganisations could post this informationwould be helpful in this regard.

International Federation of HorseRacing Academies General Assembly

The General Assembly of the InternationalFederation of Horse Racing Academiesannounced the addition of a further 14countries to the Federation. They areArgentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, France,Hong Kong, Hungary, Morocco, Sultanateof Oman, Portugal, Poland, Turkey,Slovakia and Sweden, whilst themembership of two more countries,Bahrain and Switzerland, are pending.

This increase, has meant that anotherApprentice race will be held in Poland on26 July to coincide with theWathba StudCup to be run on the same day. The offerof more races served to highlight the lackof Arabian racehorses in some of themember countries.

Also announced was the establishment ofthe IFHRA Racing Scholarship Fund(RSF), for which US $100,000 has beenearmarked. It is hoped that in thebeginning, it will benefit apprenticejockeys (approx 10-20), enabling them tospend time with mentors to progress theircareers, even in cases when they are notable to continue race riding, should theychoose a new direction within the industry.

Thegoal is to improve the horse racing andbreeding industry workforce by providingdeserving racing academy students orrecent graduates with the opportunity togain new knowledge and experience inequitation and overall horsemanship, while learning about new culture andcustoms.

Remi Bellocq, General Secretary of IFHRA,went further: The Fund is designed tobenefit both students of IFHRAmembersand employers within the horse racing andbreeding industries. Students will workabroad in real-world situations gainingexperience and benefitting frommentorship which will be a long-termbenefit to future careers.

He added that At the same time, futureemployers will also benefit from studentswho have experienced the IFHRA RSF andwho have therefore gained training in the

    newest practices the industry offers.

Following Susanna Santessons passingearlier this year, Pat Buckley wasappointed as the Vice- Chairman ofIFHRA.

Matthew Hyland from Racing Victoriaraised the issue of jockey insurance andasked if IFHRA could establish a policy forall jockeys taking part in the apprenticeseries. A sub-committee was formed toapproach insurers to quote for cover fromweighing out, to weighing in.

IFHRA was founded in 2014 under theinstructions of HH SheikhMansoor BinZayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy PrimeMinister andMinister of PresidentialAffairs and had a record number of 18countries at the time of inception. It has itsheadquarters in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

WAHRC Day ThreeFuture of Arabian Racing

Moderator Philip Brannan (Sportsguide)wished for a positive discussion, though itopened with less positive statistics fromAhmad Abdel Razek, Chairman of theEgyptian Arabian Horse BreedersAssociation. He gave data relating toArabian racing in the United States, whichshowed a dramatic down turn in thenumbers, though these figures were similarin many other countries around the world. However in Egypt, he explained, that bycreating more activities, more interest inbreeding, owning and the heritage of theArabian horse, numbers were now on therise.

Sam Vasquez (US ownerbreeder)explained. We need support, particularlythe small breeders, who dont have thecapital to invest in a top stallion.

Ms Sawaya explained that there are manycountries which do not have Arabianhorses. Festival initiatives such as theWathba Stud Farm Cup and the Ladies

and Apprentice series help to support andencourage countries. She highlighted thatsome countries have had problems wherethere have been more than one body withinfluence over Arabian racing, but theymust come together to move forward.

Polands Kishore Mirpuri explained thatbreeding in Poland was healthy, with 200races being run for Arabians every year. However he said that there was animbalance of the horse population aroundthe world, which makes it difficult tooperate as a global sport.

He also believed that the Arabian wasconsidered a second class horse to theThorougbred, however horse racing ingeneral was struggling, so we have a verytough job. Even in France, which isconsidered a world leader in this sport, most of the racing takes place in theprovinces. He felt that even when thebiggest races are held on the big days, theArabian is still a supporting act to theThroughbred.

Genny Hayes [in her role as ArabianRacing Organisation Director in the UK]was asked about the role Arabian racingplays in supporting Thoroughbred racing, whether by training young jockeys, orproviding a lower cost entry into racehorseownership, but is that to the detriment ofour own sport?

She responded. We have to keep positive,Lara has taught me to look forward, notback, it is more difficult in the UK becausewe are segregated from theThoroughbreds. We have started toovercome this, but the BHA are ourgoverning body, they do allow us to race onThoroughbred cards, but there are certaincriteria we have to meet. This week, thewords harmonisation and communication

standout, so as long as we keepcommunicating with the BHA it will be toour benefit ARO. I dont see us as a feedersport, we need to stand up for who we are.

In her capacity as IFAHR Vice Chairmanshe continued. Regarding yesterdaysdiscussion, asking can we have one rule forall countries, that cant happen, there aretoo many different racing organisationsrun by different authorities.Harmonisation however, can happen, theIFAHR International Agreement can helpthis.

I have to stress that it is not rules; we canrecommend, we can try to help, that is theidea of the International Agreement. Wehave based it on the Thoroughbredagreement , purely because countries canthen sign up to parts that they agree withand leave out those they do not. Thoughthere are issues which are not approved inThoroughbreds, such as ArtificialInsemination which we need.

Bill Smith (also ARODirector, trainer andbreeder) felt the most important thing thisconference does, is it gives everybody achance to speak in one place and to sharetheir views. He wasnt so concerned aboutthe decline in the racing horse population,as that has meant an increase in the qualityof horses remaining. However hecontinued. The lack of breeders is a worry. We have to encourage smaller breeders, whether it is by a breeders premium, orreduction in stallion nominations, I dontknow, but something must be done to helpthem.

The cost of air transportation for horses tocompete in a single race was given as areason that constricts internationalcompetition. Though if it was possible toshare flights, or if there was more than onerace, that would help keep costs down.

Returning to breeders premiums, MsSawaya pointed out they already existed inFrance and through theWathba StudFarm Cup series worldwide.

Genny Haynes confirmed that as well astheWathba Stud Farm Cup races, in all ofthe domestic races, any UK bred horse inthe first six will receive a small premium,so that incentive is in place. Since it wasbeen introduced four years ago, itspleasing to see that the registrations ofthree year olds this year are up, bringingnew people into the sport.

She continued. Another way is throughthe jockeys, and its good to see DawnGoodfellow of the Northern RacingCollege [Doncaster, UK] here, as they nowhave two Arabian ex-racehorses at theschool for apprentices to learn on, againencouraging the younger generation.

    Workshop

There was a short break and theconference concluded with an openworkshop session, hosted by Ms LaraSawaya and Derek Thompson.

It was apparent that there would need tobe further harmonisation of the rulesbetweenWAHO and IFAHR as manyowners and breeders were frustrated bythe rules governing transportationbetween countries and qualifying criteriafor racing.

This was of particular importance to thelarge contingent of UAE representativesandMs Sawaya suggested they meet underthe umbrella of the Festival, so that theirown particular issues can be discussed atlength.

Ms Sawaya also encouraged those IFAHRmembers who were yet to sign up to the

International Agreement to take action assoon as possible in order to move forward.

In support of Arabian racing in the US sheannounced a new race, to be held as part ofthe HH Sheikha Fatima Bint MubarakInternational Awards and the USA DarleyAwards. The race will be run in the nameof Her Highness Sheikha Fatima BintMubarak, Mother of the UAE, Chairpersonof the General Womens Union, SupremeChairperson of the Family DevelopmentFoundation and Chairwoman of theSupreme Council for Motherhood andChildhood andMother of theWorld. Witha prize fund of USD$50,000, the Open racewill be held in Los Angeles on 3 April 2016.

At the close of events Genny Haynes gaveher thoughts on this years conference.

For the sixthWorld Arabian Horse RacingConference, it has been wonderful to be inWarsaw, but what is really important, is itsa fantastic initiative of HH SheikhMansoor

and HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, bringing all the racing organisations fromall over the world together, so that we candiscuss and share our information.

Frommy position as a Director of ARO,what I bring away from the conference isthe issue of handicapping and the need forgreater communication, which we need tokeep going outside of the conference.

"Another important issue is theInternational Agreement. We would behappy to see horses from the UAEcompeting in Europe in their off-season,providing they meet the criteria of thosecountries. But yes, we would welcomethem over and I hope that is a realpossibility. We see more horses coming inand out of different countries now, so aslong as we can put the right races on, it willattract them.

Rome next year is exciting. Italy have justapplied to be members of IFAHR which isgreat, so that will go to the GeneralAssembly for voting on in October.

Talking about his experience before therace Eoin Walsh said I rode at Tarbesin France last year and loved it. Imglad to be back again this season. Welearn so much, its not every day youget an opportunity to ride abroad.Since then Ive been riding out a lotmore in Newmarket, but now Im downto a 3lb claim, it makes it harder. Imfrom Galway and I did the10 monthcourse at RACE [Racing Academy andCentre of Education] in Ireland andfrom there I had a two year placementat Dermot Welds. It was brilliantworking there, I had 10 rides, butlooking back now, I dont feel I wasgood enough to deserve them!

The Sheikha Fatima series is brilliant, theyre doing the best for Arabianracing and breeding and they look afterus so well. Ive only ridden one Arabbefore, theyre different toThorougbreds, theyre more flighty andthey dont stride out as much, Imhoping for the best today.

With Wilden a non-runner and replacedby Etnum Psyche, the field was led byKarla Al Khalediah and Turkeys BurakAverbak, narrowly heading Dirhem andLuke Leadbitter for the UK on the rail.

It was an impressive performance byPerfektor, who, despite running thelast furlong with a loose shoe flappingon his off hind, still drew clear by over10 lengths.

I have heard so much about the finalmeeting held in Abu Dhabi and nowthat I have qualified, I cant wait tillNovember. This has been such a greatexperience and I think I was just luckyto be here, but to cap that with a win,it simply great, said Vande Velde.

English representative, Lorna Brookespoke about her Festival experiencesafter the race. I rode in Bahrain earlierthis year, but it wasnt very successful!Today the trainer said I had to mount inthe stable, as the horse could be a bitdifficult, but once I was on, there was noproblem.

Iwork for [ThoroughbredNationalHunttrainer] Richard Lee in England and I rideover fences, so this is all very new to me!Before this I had never ridden Arabians, but Sarah Oliver, who is in charge of theAmateurs in the UK, felt it was veryimportant itwasnot just Flat jockeyswhotook part.

Taking part in the Ladies WorldChampionships is really interesting, luckily most of them speak English,Jessica [Marcialis] was in Bahrain, soyou get to know some of the girls and

we keep in touch outside of the races. Its amazing the support behind it,when you consider how well we arelooked after. I see no reason whyArabian racing cant be on a higherlevel than it is at the moment. I wouldcertainly consider riding Arabians in theUK, I know Steve Blackwell [UK Arabiantrainer], from Point-to-Pointing, and Iexpect I might be surprised how manypeople I know are involved with thesport in the UK.

TAUNTON REVIEWDespite a forecast of rain, it remained dryand occasionally sunny, though ratherwindy at times. The ground was given asfirm, though rain earlier in the week and agood cover of grass made for excellentracing conditions.

The Shadwell Arabian Stallions MaidenStakes over 6 furlongs opened proceedingsand it was encouraging to see that seven ofthe ten starters were British bred. Howeverit was no surprise to find EL SALAAM (GB)sent off at odds on, after an encouragingdebut behind the well regarded Bon BaiserDe Faust at Wolverhampton two weeksago.

Attila De Rouaisse (FR) was very smartlyaway and was two lengths clear of AmiraBint Goudah (GB) and El Salaam. Theremainder of the field were well spread outbehind, which was not surprising given thenumber of debutants and those making

    their second racecourse appearance.

Benndaka (GB), who is clearly not an easyride, tested Page Fullers horsemanshipskills to the limit, running out at the firstbend and she did well to keep thepartnership intact. It remains to be seenwhether racing is really his forte.

Meanwhile the leaders positions remainedunchanged coming into the straight, though Phil Collington was poised to makehis move on El Salaam, with stablemateRodin (NL) closing in fourth. Amira BintGoudah started to fade as Zahy (GB) wentpast her on the rail and those four wentclear of the rest.

El Salaam was eased at the line, fourlengths ahead of Rodin. Long time leaderAttila De Rouaisse was a further three backin third, with a fair run from newcomerZahy, staying on in fourth.www.youtube.com/watch?v=aniJJR4Mx5o

The Royal Cavalry of Oman (0-40)Handicap Stakes over a mile and a quarteryielded only five runners including theveterans Roches Du Cayrou (FR) andRaihan (AE). The maiden Callymay (GB)was strongly fancied following a fairsecond on her seasonal bow. From thestart, David Turner was positive on theother maiden Yaqueen and with RochesDu Cayrou just behind, they were soon agood eight lengths clear of the rest of thefield.

The gap had closed by halfway, withYaqueen maintaining her advantage, though entering the home straight it wasclear it was soon to end. Roches Du CayrouandMatt Johnson took it up in the finalquarter mile and with the rail to help him,it looked like he would add to his tenprevious victories. However Robin Pfeiffer

was hard at work on CROWNOFSALONA (GB) and once past, he just hadto be pushed out for a cosy win by a neck, from Roches Du Cayrou, with Raihan twoand half lengths behind.

The disappointment was Callymay, SimonWalker had to niggle her along for most ofthe way and she will to need to pull out abit more to get off the mark perhapseasier underfoot conditions are required.

Crown of Salona seems well suited by thistrip and surface and it looks like there isstill room for further improvement thisseason. His delighted breeder, DianeCreed, was also present to receive thetrophy on behalf of connections.www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0lznVT12pI

The shadwellarabian.co.uk (0-85)Handicap Stakes followed and thoughAshraaf (FR) was favourite, the marketrated this mile contest a competitive eventand it produced one of the closest finishesof the day. Gill Duffields trio were allmaking their seasonal bows, whilst theremainder all had the benefit of a run. PageFuller took the initiative on Kamizake (GB),with Jabal Aly (GB), Syrah Gris (GB) andMaazin (GB) closely bunched behind andonly about four lengths covering the entirefield.

Turning for home there were many withchances, though Kamikaze looked to befinding things a bit hot, as he drifted acrossthe track to the rail when under pressure to

maintain his lead. Maazin (GB) andAlessandro Guerrini took it up, but werequickly deposed by Steve Harrison on hisstablemate JABAL ALY, Phil Collingtonpositioned Ashraaf to challenge, incompany with Altesse Kossack (NL), andSyrah Gris.

Matt Johnson had a great run up the standsrail with Karar (AE), but JABAL ALY wastoo good for all of them, and he led a one-two-three for Gill Duffield and HH SheikhHamdan, ahead of Ashraaf andMaazin.Karar certainly caught the eye, doing all hisbest work at the finish, when beaten ashort head into fourth.www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2brivuQBt0

With only three runners, the mile and aquarter the Royal Cavalry of OmanConditions Stakes looked like a formalityfor BON BAISER DE FAUST (FR).Zamhareer (GB), from the same stable, made the running ahead of Aurora Forta(AE), with Bon Baiser De Faust held up inthird. Aurora Forta had caught the eye lastseason when second in the Group 2juvenile contest on Dubai Day, a race thatZamhareers dam, Zormania (FR), had wonback in 2006.

Bon Baiser De Faust certainly looked a lothappier going right handed and the fieldtravelled well within themselves at areasonable pace. With three furlongs left togo, Zamhareer strayed off his line a littlegreenly, forcing Phil Collington to makehis challenge between horses. Aurora Fortaneeded encouragement to stick with himand though she was never going tooverhaul the winner, she was not given a

hard time and there was plenty to likeabout her performance. She was ninelengths clear of the debutant, Zamhareer, who will be better for the experience.www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrriNw4PYhA

Next up was a six furlong sprint, theDubaiInternational Arabian Races (0-55)Handicap Stakes and it was notable thatall the runners were British bred. TOPTRIP, a three-time winner over further, likes things his own way out in front andreceived plenty of encouragement fromStef Gandola to get there.

Eau Jember, who looked sure to strugglefrom out of the handicap, took up secondslot with Senor Dublcheck and top weight,Jamaahir, in close attendance, with a gapback to LB Farrah and Shuwaiman AlKebir.Setting a furious pace out in front, TopTrip looked vulnerable in the last halffurlong, when Senor Dublcheck and RobWollard made their move, possibly evenheading Jenny Peytons horse for a strideor two. Though he had to knuckle down atthe business end, Top Trip showed theright attitude and he pulled three lengthsclear of Senor Dublcheck.

LB Farrah, who settled better today, closedfor third, well clear of Shuwaiman AlKebir, who was shouldering a penalty forhis recent Wolverhampton win.www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4_MK79M3iI

The longest race of the day, thewww.deborahburt-sculpture.co.uk (0-70)Handicap Stakeswas run over 1m5f. Itfeatured the progressive Kermit The Frog(FR), who was looking to extend his goodrun of form to four consecutive wins.

Vindetta (GB) andWhisper (GB) from theAdam Newey stable set a steady pace out infront, with SHARAF (FR), Kermit The Frogand Best Turned Out winner Gelliwen inbehind, though Kermit The Frog lookedkeen enough in the early stages.

By the halfway point theyd all settled intoa rhythm with six lengths covering thefield, however they started to bunch uprounding the final bend, with Kermit TheFrog four lengths adrift in the rear. In thelast quarter mile, Phil Collington on Sharafhad drawn alongsideWhisper andVindetta, who had the benefit of the rail. However Collingtons mount, who had

been disappointing in five previous startsover lesser trips, needed all his help to getcompetitive and it looked likeWhisperwould prevail.

Crossing the road, Sharaf appeared toattempt to jump it, whilst Whispershortened her stride, almost unseatingPage Fuller and certainly losingmomentum, allowing Sharaf to gain theadvantage. Kermit The Frog valiantly stuckhis head out for a place, but Gelliwen hadmore in hand to claim third.

Having been somewhat disappointing infive previous outings, the combination of adrop in class and a step up in trip broughtabout the necessary improvement forSharaf. It was a fine day for HH SheikhHamdan Al Maktoum and this family inparticular, as Sharaf (by Mahabb) is a halfbrother to Ashraaf (by Madjani), second inthe mile handicap, whilst their damTashreefat (GB) is a daughter of Seglaoui(FR), who produced the winner of themaiden race in El Salaam.

After the meeting, Shadwell StudsDirector Richard Lancaster, commented onthe day.

Over the last couple of years, most of therunners here in England have beenhomebreds. It is nice to see our runners byour own stallions doing well.

El Salaam had run in the race atWolverhampton [behind Bon Baiser DeFaust] to make sure it wasnt a walk over,so I was delighted to see him come out andconfirm his ability. Whilst Zahy ran with alot of promise for a three year old.

Sharaf is the most gorgeous looking

horse, probably one of the best lookinghorses weve ever had here, and when wefirst tried him, he didnt seem to have anyengine. At least now weve found out histrip, hopefully weve turned a corner andhe may improve further.

Having the 1-2-3 in the mile handicap allwith homebreds, is of course very pleasing. It allows Gill to start making the best planfor the horses. The ultimate objective, which starts in January every year, is tohave runners on Dubai Day so we have toplan, keeping them running on theirmerits, which is not always easy within alimited programme. You need to get acouple of runs into a young horse to workout what distance its suited to and just togive it the experience of racing.

With Bon Baiser De Faust its just aquestion of how long the boss will let uskeep him here before he goes out to Dubai,it was really a stepping stone to run in theUK.We bought him just after hed beentouched off in Chantilly last year and hethen ran a couple of rather disappointingraces. He has regained his confidence now,so we will just have to see whats next.

So it is best to look to the PeterHammersley pair: Kermit The Frog'swinning run came to an end last timeout, but he'll be happier over this trip

and back at a track he's won at before.

Amyzing Zayin makes herseasonal debut, having won here onher penultimate start before finishing4th at Wolverhampton when last seen. She has solid claims.

But the horse that finished one place infront of her that day was Kiraa. Shewas second on her seasonal return andis a previous course winner. Both hervictories have come under this riderand she's now dropped to a jointlowest career mark. She's worth takinga chance on at the likely odds.
