8 two-year-old winners in 2011and still counting!

Kiaran McLaughlin leaned over the back of a chair and stared at the TV, he could have been watching the 6 o’clock news. In a clubhouse box at the top of the stairs, one square over from Todd Pletcher and just down from his old boss Wayne Lukas, McLaughlin simply stared at the TV while bedlam rained around him. Then It’s Tricky finally began to edge away from Plum Pretty as the dour fillies approached the wire of the Coaching Club American Oaks. McLaughlin stood up.

“Come on. Come on. Come on. Yesssssss.”Seven words for nine furlongs, McLaughlin ex-

ploded in relief, hugged his daughter Erin and his wife Letty and then was mugged by Lukas and Pletcher.

“Ooh, I didn’t think she was going to get there,” said McLaughlin when asked about his aplomb. “I didn’t think she was going to get there.”

She got there. It’s Tricky, owned by Godolphin Racing, broke

sharply from the outside post and pulled Eddie Cas-tro into a stalking spot outside Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty and Mother Goose winner Buster’s Ready. Plum Pretty rolled through a quarter in 23.88 seconds and a half in 47.55 while It’s Tricky tracked from the outside. Buster’s Ready sat third on the inside while Joyful Victory followed in fourth and Black Eyed Su-san winner Royal Delta lagged in last.

Plum Pretty coasted through 6 furlongs in 1:11.06 before Eddie Castro sent It’s Tricky after Plum Pretty

and the two fillies hooked up at the quarter pole. The first to feel the leak and start bailing, Castro urged It’s Tricky while Martin Garcia sat motionless on Plum Pretty as the fillies straightened into the stretch. Most viewers, like McLaughlin, didn’t think she was going to get there.

Ears pinned, strides churning wide, It’s Tricky final-ly ousted Plum Pretty inside the sixteenth pole to win

by three-quarters of a length, finishing 9 furlongs in 1:49.15. Royal Delta fin-ished third, 6 1/2 lengths behind Plum Pretty.

It’s Tricky improved her record to four wins from five starts and added to her undefeated record in New York (4-for-4), her undefeated record with Cas-tro (4-for-4) and her undefeated record in Godolphin’s silks (1-for-1). Switched from the maroon and white of Darley to the blue and white of Godolphin after winning the Grade I Acorn in her pre-vious start before the CCA Oaks, It’s Tricky verified the move.

“She answered the question that she was Godolphin quality when she won the Acorn. Simon (Crisford) and Sheikh Mohammed felt like she had proven herself to be the quality of what Godol-phin represents, they also felt like it was in her best interests to leave her with Kiaran because of her quirks,” Darley’s Jimmy Bell said. “Our entire goal is to get a horse good enough to get them to Godolphin, that is our true objec-tive and as you know, they are few and far between. We’re happy she’s in those silks.”

So is McLaughlin. “That white bridle and blue silks

look good together,” McLaughlin joked after the race.

McLaughlin trains for Darley; when a horse reaches Grade I level, they usu-ally switch to Godolphin’s string trained by Saeed bin Suroor. It’s Tricky makes life difficult for McLaughlin and his

crew but it’s also the reason she’s still with them.

“We had known her antics and Sheikh Mohammed knows enough about how tricky these fillies can be,” Bell said. “He wanted to leave her with Kiaran to give her every opportunity to do something like this.”

McLaughlin unveiled It’s Tricky for a maiden win going 6 furlongs at Aque-duct in November. Stretched to a mile and 70 yards for her second start, she duly won that, over Buster’s Ready. She came back a month later to win the Busher.

“We always thought she was one of our best fillies but she always had that little bit of an attitude,” McLaughlin said. “We left her in New York to try to get a little black type and she won the Busher, that’s a good race.”

After three consecutive wins, It’s Tricky shipped to Florida for the Gulf-stream Park Oaks on April 2. Sent off second choice behind R Heat Lightning, It’s Tricky never got untracked and wound up fourth, beaten 22 lengths. McLaughlin didn’t dwell on the defeat and sent her straight back to his assis-tant Art Magnuson in New York.

“I was disappointed, we thought she was doing great because she was so settled. Rob Massey who is a great rider was getting on her and she was going great, but she just wasn’t training like she did when she was here, we sent her right back to Artie and she came around,” McLaughlin said. “I don’t know what happened in Florida but I sent her back to New York still think-ing we could make the Oaks and Artie

got her and said, ‘let’s just wait.’ He deserves a lot of credit, it’s a big team effort.”

On vacation, Magnuson talked to McLaughlin Saturday morning to prep him and his team on her quirks. They seemed to nail it. She handled the walk from the assembly barn to the paddock. She tolerated the paddock, following the lead pony to the track. She rolled through the post parade. And, well, the race was connect-the-dots easy.

Then she dumped Castro while wait-ing to walk into the winner’s circle. Walking down the steps, McLaughlin heard the crowd’s reaction and knew it had to be her.

“What happened? What happened?”“She flipped the rider off,” Erin

McLaughlin said. “She flipped?”“No, just the rider.”Unhurt, Castro was back aboard and

McLaughlin was relieved.“Every day you worry about her, it’s

a lot of relief for sure,” McLaughlin said. “She’s a very good filly so she’s not that difficult. The ones that are difficult and don’t run are a pain, she’s really not that bad when she runs like this. Hor-mones, that’s what I say. She’s a filly. She’s tough, in season a lot. As long as she’s OK and he’s OK.”

Matt Prior, who works for McLaugh-lin, had his own take on things.

“I think It’s Tricky just wanted the last word on things.”

She got it.

In 10 lifetime starts, Deanaallen’skitten has never been off the board and the chestnut Kitten’s Joy filly did not disappoint in Saturday’s first race, out-finishing Michael Matz’s Shatoosh to lodge a third consecutive victory in the grassy mile and a sixteenth allowance. Three-quarters of a length was enough to earn trainer Chad Brown and jockey Jose Lezcano their first win-ner of the 2011 meet.

Despite being a model of consistency, it took Brown’s charge a little while to locate the winner’s circle. The filly ran second or third in no less than eight starts before breaking her maiden at Keeneland in April.

History might have been a little different if her be-nevolent owner, Ken Ramsey, had been a little less be-nevolent at last year’s meet. Deanaallen’skitten, then 3, finished a good second on August 15 and seemed poised for a win. Brown re-entered her later in the meet as an entry with another owner, but the filly

wound up on the Also-Eligible list. “The only way she was going to get into the field

was if Mr. Ramsey scratched his other one,” Brown recalled. “Mine was superior to the one that was in, but Mr. Ramsey said, ‘oh, it’s not fair to the other trainer.’ ”

Brown persevered with the 4-year-old and after some patient study and a few collaborative brain-storming sessions with Lezcano, discovered the key.

“We had a plan going into the paddock,” Brown said. “We’ve learned she just has one move, she just has to sit and wait. He was riding her and I was watch-ing her and he came back and said, ‘you know, I think I moved too early a couple times. I think I should wait

longer with her.’ I agreed and we just kind of figured it out together.”

Armed with their new insight, Brown took Deanaallen’skitten from her maiden victory to a start-er allowance score at Belmont last month. The for-mula was no different today.

“She’s an improving horse and real consistent,” Brown said. “It’s her 11th race and every time she’s been on the board. I wish I had 10 of her.”

stood watching the replay, grinning ear-to-ear and periodically slapping one an-other on the back. The winner, Laurie’s Rocket, is a son of WinStar’s young sire Bluegrass Cat.

Laurie’s Rocket finished second in his debut in May after finding himself five wide on the turn at Churchill, but he turned in a professional performance Saturday. A speed duel developed on the front end during the early stages of the race, leaving Laurie’s Rocket in the wake of splits of 21.72 and 44.90. But the speed burned off in the sizzling heat and Laurie’s Rocket swept past in cavalier fashion.

“He’s a very nice horse. He ran second his first time and looks like he wants to run on so I was happy to see that. He won with his ears up. I think he’s going to be a nice colt later on too,” said Stewart, eyes still flicking back and forth to the replay.

Stewart has been high on the $300,000 yearling since the beginning.

“We gave a lot of money for him,” Stewart said. “He was a beautiful colt. (Owner Willis Horton) and I picked him out together.”

The ride was Kent Desormeaux’s first win at Sara-toga this year.

• Dynafortwo didn’t think much of being asked to load in the gait in Saturday’s turf mile and a sixteenth maiden, but once he was out on the other side, made professional work of the eight-horse field.

Racing for Betty Moran’s Brushwood Stable, the $775,000 yearling bided his time under restraint by Julien Leparoux before making a move at the top of the stretch. Rallying under vigorous urging, Dynafort-

wo staved off Doug Fout’s firster Deposit Slip by a head.

The Dynaformer gelding made his first start in May of this year on a yielding course at Belmont, finish-ing fifth to Chad Brown’s Code Of Conduct. Trainer Christophe Clement remained enthusiastic about the horse, however.

“He always looked well,” Clement said. “He need-ed time, but he’s trained well, so I’m delighted he’s won today for Mrs. Moran.”

Although Clement expects to bring Dynafortwo back before the end of the Saratoga meet, the train-er opted to bask in the excitement of Saturday’s race

without looking too far ahead for his talented charge. “Let’s enjoy it. We just won a race,” Clement said.

“It took us three years for this horse to get a win, so let’s just enjoy it for a bit.”

Notably absent was the field’s big talking-point horse, the Todd Pletcher-trained Unbridled’s Song colt who brought $875,000 as a September yearling from new heavy-hitter Benjamin Leon. The colt, named Un-bridled Ocean, divested himself of John Velazquez and went for a jaunt on the backside shortly after the post parade and was scratched.

• Darley President Jimmy Bell came out of the winner’s circle after the sixth race wiping his brow.

“I’m glad they made it official before I made a comment.”

Coming down the stretch of the Mellon Course, Javier Castellano and Darley’s Capital Market seemed to have the mile and a sixteenth allow-ance won. They had opened up a day-light advantage and it was a surprise to hear the footfalls of John Velazquez on Ken McPeek’s Tahoe Lake. Velazquez had found a needle-thin slip of running room on the hedge and made a lights-out run for Capital Market. The bulb flashed and two sets of connections hovered uncertainly in the box seats.

The slo-mo replay sparked serious debate, but when the official gavel came down, Capital Market had hung on.

Castellano was as unsure as Bell in the heat of the moment.

“I didn’t know, it was pretty close on the bob,” the rider said. “It was hard to say. My horse responded very well, but you never know with those bobs, it can go either way.”

The 4-year-old son of Indian Charlie has played the bridesmaid in three out of his four starts this year, all grassy al-lowances, but Castellano, who rode the horse in his most recent start at Belmont, was convinced the addition of blinkers made the difference on Saturday.

“I think (trainer Tom Albertrani) did an excellent job with the horse,” Castel-lano said. “He put the blinkers on to-

day and that’s what he needed. He was more in focus today, he was more in the game. It was a big plus for us.”

• R King Of The Road got off  to a false start when running third on debut in January but managed an eye-catching win over 6 furlongs.

The 3-year-old son of Trippi exited his debut with a small tibia fracture

that necessitated some time off. Not to mention being a little backward, a little green.

Pletcher threw the book at him. Rest, recuperation, blinkers, gelded.

“He’s still learning but those seemed to help get him on the right direction,” Pletcher said.

The right direction, 8 lengths ahead of everybody else. The gelding set the pace through racehorse splits of 21.67

and 44.25 and at the top of the stretch was already 3 lengths clear. By the time he coasted past the wire under John Velasquez, the rest of the field was a non-threatening pack chasing him fu-tilely home. The final time was 1.09.08.

Pletcher was pleased but reserved about the horse’s prospects.

“That was impressive enough to think he’d be competitive enough in a one other than, anyway,” Pletcher said.

With a smashing victory and some impressive numbers on his past-perfor-mance sheet, Overdriven is likely to be a heavy favorite in the Sanford this after-noon at Saratoga Race Course.

The Distorted Humor colt owned by Mike Repole and trained by Todd Pletcher faces eight others in the Grade II Sanford, the first of three graded stakes for 2-year-old males on the Sara-toga calendar. By the time they hit the wire in the 6-furlong Sanford, there will be some answers to questions about whether the Tale Of The Cat colt is a legitimate star on the rise.

Repole’s colt certainly earned the at-tention he is receiving with his maiden victory at Belmont Park July 1. Start-ing from post two in the field of five, he overcame some early trouble, stalked the pace through fractions of 22 and 44 1/5 seconds, took over and drew away to a 3 1/2-length victory in 56 2/5.

“Overdriven was very impressive in his debut at Belmont and has trained well since then,” Pletcher said. “It was a fast race. He trained well leading into it. That was maybe even better than we

had expected, but he has come back with a good solid breeze over the track here. We’re hoping for another similar performance.”

Saratoga has been Overdriven’s home for a couple of months and he prepared for his maiden race on the Oklahoma training track. Pletcher prepped him for the Sanford with a 5-furlong breeze over the main track July 18. His time of 59 1/5 was the second-fastest of 15 works at the distance that morning.

John Velazquez has the mount on Overdriven, a $350,000 purchase by Repole at the Keeneland September yearling sale. They will start from post six and are 3-5 on the morning line.

Skeedattle Stable’s Futurity winner Jack’s In The Deck drew the outside post as he tries for his second straight stakes victory.

Trained by Robin Graham in Mary-land, the Love Of Money colt finished second in his debut at Delaware Park and broke his maiden with a 4-length score in the Futurity at odds of 14-1. He’s 10-1 and gets the services of Ra-

mon Dominguez today. The field includes Black Rhino, an

El Corredor colt who broke his maiden by 8 lengths on the turf at Churchill Downs on June 25 for trainer Wesley Ward. Robby Albarado rides the the Kentucky-bred. Ward also entered Bless The Soldier, a son of Belong To Me who won at Woodbine in May.

Power World, a Courtlandt Farm homebred trained by Neil Howard, comes into the Sanford off a second in the Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs July 2. The son of Distorted Hu-mor won his debut at Churchill in June. Edgar Prado takes the ride at 5-1.

“He’s coming into the race very nice and he’s trained well for the race,” Howard said. “He’s obviously a horse who is probably going to do better when the distances stretch out.”

Trainer Eddie Kenneally won a 6-furlong maiden race with Maan at Churchill in July. Julien Leparoux rides the son of Malibu Moon at 8-1.

Dale Romans and Javier Castel-lano team up with Tarpy’s Goal, third behind Jack’s In The Deck in the Fu-turity. Moonrush chased Maan home at Churchill and returns for a rematch at 20-1 for Wayne Lukas and Cornelio Velasquez.

Handicapper Report CardSpecial handicappers strung together several winners on Saturday’s card. Some of the

memorable scores included Bedard’s cold early pick 3 ($155.50), which included Laurie’s Rocket ($16.20). Shapazian nailed the 7th race exacta ($81.50). Finley selected Aptphilly ($16.80) on top in race 8. Shapazian led the pack with 4 top winners on the card, followed by Keppler, Finley and Bedard with 3 apiece. Fitzgerald had two wins, nailing the opener and the nightcap.

A bad beat for the three Special handicappers who had 5-1 Tahoe Lake from the McPeek barn in race number 6 who rallied from far back to just miss in one of the tightest photos in recent memory.

The pick six returned $51,020.

Breaking • Training • Sales

Camden, South Carolina has been home to Thoroughbred excellence for generations.

The tradition continues.

history

It has been 24 years since Robin Gra-ham brought a horse to Saratoga. The last time she rode up in the back of Bar-clay Tagg’s van the day Lady’s Secret dragged Chris McCarron to the outside rail and had to be pulled up.

The filly in the Tagg van didn’t fare much better.

“There was kind of a miscommu-nication with the jockey,” Graham re-called Saturday afternoon.

The Maryland-based trainer intends to do better this time with a hot entry in today’s Grade II Sanford Stakes for 2-year-olds.

G r a h a m came by Skee-dattle Stable’s Jack’s In The Deck almost by accident. She and Skeedattle partners Willie White, Lou Re-hak and Bobby Orndorff went out to look at a few of their yearlings at Becky Davis and

Tom Bowman’s farm on the Eastern Shore. Davis had a few horses heading for the sales ring, including a homebred Love Of Money colt with a high hip number.

“He was real late in the sale, and Becky said, ‘I’d love to be able to sell him before I have to sit there for all those extra hours,’ ” Graham said.

She was able to save Davis the time. “We really liked him as an individual.

He just acted really professional about everything,” Graham said. “Nothing really flusters him at all. Lynn Ashby broke him because we wanted to get him Delaware certified and she said he just was a really good guy and did any-thing you asked him to do.”

Jack’s In The Deck continues to do whatever is asked of him. After run-ning second in his debut at Delaware in April, the Maryland-bred colt returned in stiffer company in the Grade II Futu-rity Stakes at Belmont over 6 furlongs. Sitting mid-division under Joe Bravo through the opening fractions, Jack’s In The Deck responded to powerhouse urging from his rider and coasted under the wire 4 lengths to the good.

Graham and “the Skeedattle boys,” as she refers to her owners, were thrilled, but not shocked.

“We thought he would run well. He ran well in his first race at Delaware and had progressed in his training since that race,” she said. “We all thought that go-ing longer was going to help him so it worked really well. He obviously had learned something the first time he ran.”

The trip to Saratoga will be a quick one for Graham and her goal is simple: Do well.

With 14 horses in training in Laurel on her mind in addition to her young

star, Graham opted to send Jack’s In The Deck late Saturday and catch the 3 a.m. train herself on Sunday morning – early, but probably more comfortable than the back of Tagg’s van.

Ramon Dominguez fills in today for Bravo, who elected to stay in Mon-mouth to honor his commitments there.

“Ramon has ridden for us a lot when he was here in Maryland, so it was an easy choice,” Graham said.

Jack’s In The Deck breaks from the eight hole and will spot his rivals be-tween 2 and 4 pounds after his Belmont success.

Friend Or Foe’s foal papers might say “Registered New York-bred,” but he’s done his best to prove he belongs anywhere with starts in the Jim Dandy, Trav-ers and Cigar Mile.

The 4-year-old jumps back in with Empire Staters as the 4-5 favorite in Monday’s $75,000 Evan Ship-man Stakes. Friend Or Foe has never lost a New York-bred start, but gets an opportunity to step toward a far bigger goal in the 1 1/8-mile race (the eighth of nine on the card).

“He’s never won a two-turn race and we know that down the road, the Breeders’ Cup (Classic) is a two-turn race and we want to see if he can get a little more experience on a two-turn course,” said trainer John Kimmel Saturday morning. “That’s the reason we’re going here instead of the Whitney.”

Friend Or Foe enters the Shipman off a game score in the Easy Goer Stakes at Belmont June 5. He knocked off Grade I winner Rail Trip there, and rang

up what could be considered a career-best effort off a six-month layoff. Major starts in the Suburban (July 2) and Whitney (Aug. 6) may have been next, but Kimmel regrouped instead.

“I tried to get an easy race into him to start the season off and unfortunately the New York-bred race I had targeted didn’t fill,” the trainer said. “We ended up going in a race that turned out to be like a Grade II stakes. He won it, the idea was to come back in the Suburban but he wasn’t really ready. He ran a lifetime-best figure, a 2 Ragozin number, in the race he won. It took him a little bit to come back from that.”

Friend Or Foe instead will use the Shipman as a

springboard to the Grade I Woodward on Saratoga’s final weekend – leaving the Whitney to others in favor of the easier spot. Kimmel also wants a fresher horse for the fall. The Chester and Mary Broman homebred has earned his chance with five wins in eight lifetime starts. Friend Or Foe didn’t start his career until age 3 – winning his first three starts (a maiden at Gulfstream Park in March and two New York-bred races). Last summer, the chestnut son of Friends Lake finished a solid fourth, beaten 3 lengths, in the Jim Dandy and labored home sixth after a rough trip in the Travers.

He closed 2010 with an easy win in the restricted Empire Classic at Belmont in October and a fifth in the Cigar Mile. If you’re keeping score, that’s 3-for-3 vs. New York-breds and 2-for-5 with a stakes win against classy open company.

“He has a chance to be as good as any of the older horses in the country,” said Kimmel. “If he ran a 2 off that kind of layoff, he’s got a 1 or a 0 in there somewhere. If I play my cards right, I can have him show it on the right day at the right time.”

Monday’s start provides step one on that road with the Woodward, also at 9 furlongs, serving as step two – all go-ing well. From there, Kimmel hopes to make the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders’ Cup.

“That’s the plan. The Whitney’s go-ing to be a pretty tough race with Tiz-way and some others,” said Kimmel. “I’d obviously like to see Rail Trip run well because I think I can handle that horse. If those guys go and have a real tough race, it helps me come back in what is basically the same race four weeks later. Maybe we can catch a soft-ened up group of horses.”

Kimmel trained Friend Or Foe’s sire Friends Lake for the Bromans and sees some resemblance. Son is bigger than father, but more placid.

“It’s fun to think about,” said Kimmel. “He’s a little bigger than his father and has a little better temperament. His fa-ther could be tough, would refuse to load in the gate, things like that. He would get

kind of stupid and excited. This guy is big and strong, has a beautiful head, nice to be around, he’s the whole package – just really an awesome horse.”

The Shipman drew seven others in-cluding entrymate Mine Over Matter, a Broman homebred trained by Mike Hernandez. The son of Mineshaft won a stakes at Belmont last September and will be ridden by Cornelio Velasquez to complete a tough entry with Friend Or Foe (Alex Solis).

Earle Mack’s Icabad Crane finished behind Friend Or Foe in the Empire Classic last year and lost the 2010 Ship-man by a neck to Giant Moon. The 6-year-old opened 2011 with a stakes score at Aqueduct and comes off a sixth in the Suburban for trainer Graham Motion and jockey Rajiv Maragh.

Millionaire Naughty New Yorker makes his 67th career start (and fourth in the Shipman) for Fox Ridge Farm and trainer Pat Kelly. The 9-year-old hasn’t won since 2008, but owns a dozen life-time wins and 32 finishes in the first three. Ramon Dominguez rides. Kelly also runs Adam Madkour’s Spa City Fe-ver, a 5-year-old who won three times last year and comes off five consecutive stakes placings in New York-bred com-pany. Jorge Chavez takes the ride.

WellSpring Stable’s Stormy’s Majesty (Edgar Prado) won the Noble Nashua to start 2011 and goes from turf to dirt for trainer Dominic Galluscio. The son of Stormy Atlantic won the restricted Albany here last summer and took the Grade III Discovery at Aqueduct last fall. Dominick Schettino brings Robert Falcone’s Saginaw in off a claim from Chad Brown. Corey Nakatani rides.

“the Blue spruce? Oh no, not the Blue spruce. i don’t want to go if we’re staying at the Blue spruce. it smells, the water tastes bad, the beds are scratchy. that’s it, i’m staying home. Lassie’s is better. it’s far away, but it’s better.”

That’s usually how it went. Dad would enter a horse at Saratoga – Farmer’s

Lot, Esprit de Corps in the early days, Salvo, Town And Country, Odd Man, Hawaiki, No Way Tom later. The kids would get excited about a trip north. We could hang out at the Annex, soak up everything the grooms had to say, eat sandwiches from the Carving Board, watch Dad slurp down clams on the halfshell, see the races from the far end of the clubhouse behind the boxes or out on the old fire escape.

Unfortunately, we’d also have to actually leave the race course to stay at one of Dad’s hotels of choice.

Lassie’s was 30 (at least) miles away on the other side of Schuylerville. A dozen (maybe 20) rooms by the highway. Big parking lot, so we could park the van. I remember the place being yellow, but I could be wrong. Each room had two chairs outside, like a porch, and we’d sit out there most of the day. The peo-ple were nice and the place was pleasant – if a long, long way from Saratoga.

The Blue Spruce really wasn’t nice. It was on Route 29 (Lake Avenue) going toward Schuylerville on the

right. Definitely no more than a dozen rooms. Metal showers with water that may or may not have been piped directly from the Big Red Spring. Small parking lot. Not many people. Not much fun. But way closer to the track – compared to Lassie’s. Years later, we stepped up to the Post Road Lodge (actually pretty nice if a little rustic).

We traveled like that to save money, I guess. We probably added 200 miles to our trip (in a six-horse Imperatore van) driving to town to train the horse, feed the horse, check on the horse.

A few times we rented houses for the meet. One had Atari. One had a pool. One had a different zip code and used to be a boarding (or reform?) school. But I remember the hotels and all the driving back and forth the best.

I also remember loving every second of it – other than the showers at The Blue Spruce.

We’d ship the horses at night (cooler) and arrive early in the morning the day before the race. Some-times, people would holler questions in the van door (always tied open) when we waited at the toll or the rest stop. “You going to Saratoga? What’s your horse’s name? How do you spell it?” That’s why racing has lost fans – E-ZPass.

Back then, the steeplechase horses filled both barns at the Oklahoma Annex. Mickey Walsh, Tom Voss, Jonathan Sheppard, Burley Cocks, Paul Fout, Mikey Smithwick. Others came and went over the years, but they were the stalwarts, the icons. Shippers like us found room where we could.

We’d unload, move in and get to work – clean-ing the tack, sprucing the area around one or two stalls, filling buckets, installing screw-eyes and web-

bings. Bubba, a groom for Mr. Cocks, showed us how to work the hot water (a 55-gallon drum on cinder blocks with a propane burner underneath) and hol-lered “Hey Hot Walker!” every time I led Farmer’s Lot around the ring. Bubba used to rub Farmer’s Lot when the old Hickory Tree horse was in Cocks’ barn.

We learned how to make a proper Saratoga straw “pillow” in front of each stall. Where did those go? In theory it was fresh straw to use the next day. In real-ity, it was a great place for a tired kid to take a nap in front of a quiet old steeplechaser.

Like everyone else in town, we ate out. We usu-ally drove the horse van to dinner and always – al-ways – ate at DeRossi’s. Italian (obviously), the place featured the best spaghetti this side of Naples. They say Gotchya’s sits on the same spot now, but things change in 30 years. I remember an outdoor area with small rocks on the ground and grapevines overhead. Mr. DeRossi (who also had a box at the track for years) would stop by the table and say hello, make us feel like bigshots.

The horses almost always ran well, just not quite well enough to win. Farmer’s Lot (mid-1970s) would get close on class alone.

Odd Man (early 1980s) nearly won twice at the same meet. He was by Round Table and once held a track record – on the flat – at Pimlico. We’d ship to Saratoga, have a great time, lose a race, ship home and laugh about the experience. Hawaiki (1980s) finally broke through with a win, but I was in high school by then and the magic wasn’t quite the same as if Farm-er’s Lot had found a way to the winner’s circle.

Childhood makes for better memories – even about bad hotels.

Ron Anderson asked a simple question. “How many of them are easy? I mean, how many

do you just sit down and write like nothing.”I gave a simple answer. “None.”“None?”It never feels easy. Anderson has been reading our stuff for a long

time, back when I wrote a column about Eddie Greg-son in Steeplechase Times, after the Derby-winning trainer killed himself.

I poured out my emotions, unfettered and unfil-tered, which seemed easier back then. Anderson read it, only Anderson would be reading Steeplechase Times. Years later, he found me and told me he had read it, remembered it, saved it, Whew, that was a long time ago.

Not to pretend that writing in a racing paper offers any real consequence to the world at hand. It doesn’t solve anything. Doesn’t save anything. Doesn’t change anything. Today’s column is tomorrow’s fish wrap, to borrow a line from a better writer.

An 800-word Cup of Coffee is not War and Peace. Well, it’s always more war than peace but it offers little significance other than a five-minute respite, like a cup of coffee should, a moment to decompress, go for a mental walk, before coming back to the world. That’s it, that’s the whole point.

They might read easily – or at least are meant to – but they never write easily. Other than when I cheat and write a list column, you know the ones, when I make a list and call it a column. I cheated on the first one this year and was called out by a friend and for-mer Special writer, Joanie Morris.

“I’m worried about you starting off the meet with a list. That’s like being scratched at the gate. Have a great meet Clancy! See you on the 11th. Love from Kentucky”

Yeah, caught running a red light on Opening Day, that’s pathetic, lock up my pen and take away the key.

I thought I had an idea that day, only to realize when I sat down at my computer that I didn’t, which is way too late. Yup, like getting to the gate and real-izing you don’t have a gate card.

Out came the list. Friend/critic Mark Hennig (he might as well be the ombudsman of The Special) gave the decision to Joe in the opener. Joe’s column: 1, Sean’s column: 0. I couldn’t disagree, Joe had an idea, a moment in time, a point, a flow, he provided a nice respite for the reader. I wrote a list. Hennig gave us a tie in Issue number 2 when Joe wrote about Eddie Castro and I wrote about Todd Pletcher; I was happy for the tie because mine felt forced and Joe’s read like butter on a hot ear of corn.

I learned to write from Joe. We struggle through it together, bouncing ideas off each other and always empathizing over the battles at hand, like two jockeys in the hot box. I hear him in his office. He hears me in mine. Silence followed by jolts of frustration, walks around the parking lot, papers rustling, keys hammer-ing like pebbles on a sidewalk, then the release, “My column’s in there.” Good or bad, never easy.

Some mornings, I think to myself; if I circle around Clare Court, maybe I’ll find that story, or if I hang around the Morning Line Kitchen long enough, I’ll find that story, or if I wander over to the Annex, I’ll find that story. Give me a groom with a journey, a trainer with a struggle, a horse with a miracle.

Many days, you wind up with nothing; that’s why they call it fishing and not catching.

Some days you stumble upon a story and all you have to do is stoke your voice to tell that story. Those are easy. Other days, you think you have an idea and hope it flows out, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. You never know until it’s staring you in the face and the clock is ticking. Deadline is key, I always write best (or at least quickest) when time is running out. At Saratoga, it seems like time is always running out.

You’re never really happy with anything. It’s never finished, never complete. You stop. You send it to your editor (brother). You call it a day, but it’s never exactly what you wanted. Maybe for Hemingway or Tolstoy, but not Clancy (other than Tom).

I’ve won an Eclipse Award for writing, there are sentences in that article that pain me. Imagine, the painful ones in 35 columns at Saratoga, written in haste, between cliffs. Good thing, I rarely read them again.

Todd Pletcher had a roommate in college, a writer, smart kid. He said the best advice he ever received was from one of his professors.

“If you ever think you’ve written something really clever, where you sit back and think, ‘that’s good,’ throw it in the trash can.”

Good advice. Where’s that trash can again?
