Innovative designs mark the progress of this Swiss company.ARCA-SWISS started producing professional cameras in the early fifties.The new Swiss All-Round-CAmeras, ARCA-SWISS, rapidly gained an excellent reputation based on theirprecision and handling in practical situations. The first large-format reflex cameras, 6x9cm and 4x5"appeared in 1960 and were the rage of Photokina. Panoramic cameras and riflescopes followed soonthereafter. Many companies were awarded ARCA-SWISS subcontracts given the large potential forinnovation. Philippe Vogt took the company over in 1984. A new era characterised by an extensive redesignof the entire line commenced.A myriad of technologically advanced products, such as the first electronic professional camera, themonoball® B ballhead, SIM light metering, digital backs and the successful M-Line and F-Line system’sconcept were created by his team.Modular design, extensive system component interchangeability, and the superb engineering and constructionof the cameras are held in high esteem by professionals the world over. Fast format changesAnyone who owns anARCA-SWISS M-Line or F-Linecamera is never limited by formatsizes. Format changes happenin a flash: simply switch conversionsets.No additional accessories arerequired to move from 6x7cm allthe way up to 8x10".The 4x5" frame is a componentcommon to a variety of setups.When mounted on the rear carrier,it holds the ground-glass andfilm holders; mounted on thefront carrier, it carries lens boardsfor various film formats; it caneven support the bellows in longextensions.

The format framesThe F -classic format frameshave an integrated manual riseand fall mechanism which iscontrolled via lock-knobs.F -metric cameras offer self-locking geared rise and fallmovements.M-monolith format frames donot have integrated rise andfall controls as this movementis performed by the functioncarrier.The orientation of the swing axesis identical on all cameras.

Unobstructed optical pathThanks to generous dimensions,neither the bellows nor the formatframes on ARCA-SWISS camerasinterfere with the light passingthrough to the film.Vignetting is often not caused bythe lens but rather because thebellows are too small.Not so with ARCA SWISS cameras:large bellows diagonals meanthere is no interference with theimage - both to eliminate thepossibility of vignetting and alsoto produce higher image contrasts.

Practical image adjustmentcontrolsARCA-SWISS cameras offerergonomically designed andmatched controls for themovements that determinesharpness and perspective.

Separating the shift and swingfunctions makes it possible toswing and focus simultaneouslyin critical situations.

Self-lockOne hand is all you need tomount bellows units, film holderadapters, digital backs and lensboards. The units lock themselvesin place and can be attached ina snap. Once experienced, thisfeature cannot be done without.

Solid constructionDesigning a well thought-outprofessional camera is no meanfeat. ARCA-SWISS places para-mount importance on precisionand stability. Not producing heavyand cumbersome solutions hasits justification.By using design innovations,carefully selected materials andspecialized metal coatings,ARCA-SWISS succeeded inreducing the weight of theircameras as much as possiblewithout compromising stabilityand precision. Size ratios ofeach component are optimizedfor function and relationship tothe overall design.

Dampening of vibration is anotherarea in which ARCA-SWISSM-Line and F-Line cameras excel.

Completely interchangeableARCA-SWISS format framescan be swapped from frontstandard to rear standard.This design offers the mostflexible system and formatoption package available.

Triaxial yaw-free is the newstandard for yaw freedom setby the ARCA-SWISS M -monolithin 1987. Up until that point,cameras only offered limitedyaw freedom. ARCA-SWISScameras outfitted with the orbix®device are triaxial yaw-free.

Definition of orbix® movements:the optics move at the centre ofa circle which is perpendicularto the base of the frame and islocated above the verticalmovement axis.

Handy, future-readyaccessoriesARCA-SWISS offers a wide rangeof well thought-out accessoriesfor their large format cameras.Among them is a large selectionof synthetic and leather bellowsunits in a variety of sizes andshapes. Compendium lens hoods,filter holders, filters, Polaroidbacks, reduction plates, reflexmirrors, focusing aids, shuttersystems, digital backs or adaptersfor them are all part of the assort-ment. ARCA-SWISS set newstandards in professional cameraswith the introduction of threedevices that make a photographer‘sjob easier: the patented SIMlight metering system, theMicrolink electronic shuttersystem and the eidos multi-function module: intelligenceyou can rely on.

Viewing aidsViewing aids are tools whichassist in controlling the image.ARCA-SWISS‘s unique patentedbinocular reflex viewers for themedium format and 4x5" camerasproduce a righted, magnifiedgroundglass image. Unparalleledbrightness is achieved even whenthe camera is shifted, thanks toa patented shift module. The softpadding around the viewinghood on all viewers ensures

no stray light will interfere withthe image - even eyeglasswearers have no problems.The viewing hood, combinedwith the adjustable bellowsmade of soft leather or the self-supporting bellows are alternati-ves for devotees of groundglassviewing. The binocular magnifiercan be used or not, as desired.Use of a single lupe is also anoption. The focusing bellowscan be used on both 6x9 and4x5 cameras. It is verycompact when folded. Lens shadingThe compendium is an importanttool to guarantee high-contrastimages free of stray light effects:it protects the lens from unwantedrays of light. There are twocomplimentary solutions available.The compendium with scissor-extension is the ideal option whenconsidering size and complexity.Greater degrees of freedom can

be obtained by using a multipurposestandard and a filter holder framein conjunction with a standardbellows unit. This setup makesdifficult studio applications easierto handle.

Lens and shutterARCA-SWISS and the lensmanufacturers offer a completeprogram of various shutters forlenses from 35mm to 1000mm.They all follow the principle ofhigh precision and vibrationminimization that can only beobtained from a mid-lensshutter.

The aperturecan be selected in third-stop in-crements. Aperture and shutterclose to the selected value whenthe cable release is pressed orby activating the mechanicalcontrol unit. The monorailThe backbone of any professional camera.ARCA-SWISS uses it to offer unlimited freedomwith maximum stability.

The telescopic monorailConsisting of an extension bracket and two monrail units,this is a flexible and amazingly efficient solution.Thetelescopic monorail is available in lengths of 30cm to100cm. The monorail units move freely in the extension bracketand can be fastened using handy quick-locks.This system enables lightning-quick extension adjust-ments, rough focusing and subject distance modifications.Close-ups and distant-subject shots can be achievedover a wide range without requiring additional accessories.

The collapsible monorailThe collabsible monorail for the ARCA-SWISS F-Line Cconsists of two monorail units joined by a precision foldingmechanism which holds the monorail units together whenfolded. Only a short extension bracket is required.

Additional extensionsShould the extension have to be increased quickly,none of the basic camera settings have to be changed:the monorail extension can be inserted directly intothe monorial unit.

Unlimited extensionCombining extension bracketsand various lengths of monorailunits allows the monorail to beadapted to any desired extension.In short, ARCA-SWISS sets nolimits on creativity.

Camera mountThe camera mounting system does not figure largely in conventionaldesigns regarding vibration dampening. But the entire photographicsystem has to be free of vibration to produce perfect images.The ARCA-SWISS Monoball® B is the state-of-the-art tripod headthat meets any requirement of a camera system. Using theaccessory ground plate makes worm‘s-eye photographs a reality.

orbix®orbix can be added to all F-Line camera models as anaccessory. The orbix‘s movements are perpendicular tothe optical axis rather than the monorail. Focusadjustments therefore occur in the selected plane andare also easier to make. The orbix produces absolutelyyaw-free movements - an indispensable feature whenshooting with digital cameras because of their smallsensors. Another benefit is a marked increase inmovement with short focal length lenses.The orbix-dynamic model gives the user the ability to performdynamic focus adjustments. Simply make manualadjustments in the optical axis until the desired focus isattained. Unlocking or locking of the mechanism is notrequired. The orbix-micrometric model offers gearedcontrol.

ApplicationsApplications are never limitedthanks to the modular camerasystem.Wide-angle applicationswith the M-monolith are limitless.Even the shortest focal lengthscan be used with the flat lensboard. Any high-performancedigital back - be it chip or scanner -can be used. Only the applicationand budget dictate the type ofback to use. Should you selectthe medium format ARCA SWISSbecause of the small sensors,the camera can be expandedfor use with 4x5 scanners or even8x10 film at any time.
