The Archdiocese Of New York has decided to open her cemeteries for a short time on Mother's Day, May 10. As a Parish Ceme-tery of St. Raymond's Church, we will follow their lead and temporarily open our grounds on Mother's Day for visitation. We un-derstand that this transition has been difficult for all our families as it has been for our staff to prepare the grounds for visitation. In an effort to adhere to the continuing health and safety concerns relating to the ongoing pandemic, we ask for your cooperation in following the guidelines presented below that will be in effect on Sunday: ♦ Visiting hours on Sunday May 10 will be from 9 am to 3 pm. ♦ The Office will be closed and staff will not be present to answer any questions. Kindly know the location of your loved one prior to your visit.

Cemetery maps will be made available to download. ♦ Security Staff will be present at designated entrance gates to allow visitors into the cemetery and maintain the flow of traffic. Keep in mind that

they may limit the number of cars at any time to ensure social distancing. ♦ In order to maintain the flow of traffic and allow everyone the opportunity to visit with their loved one. Family and friends are asked to limit their

visit at graveside to 15 – 20 minutes. ♦ For safety reasons please do not walk across any grave with fresh top soil. ♦ Visitors must wear masks and maintain the current social distancing rules at all times. ♦ Water faucets are turned off and bathrooms will not be available for public use. ♦ At graveside: Kindly place only fresh flowers, potted plants, or artificial flowers. No planting, palm, balloons, food or personal memorabilia, please! ♦ At mausoleums: kindly place artificial flowers only. No fresh flowers, plants, palms, balloons, food or personal memorabilia, please! ♦ The Indoor #2 Mausoleum will be inaccessible for visitation from Noon to 1pm as we will be live streaming the Mother’s Day Mass from inside. ♦ Jogging, biking, dog-walking, picnicking or loud music are prohibited for the safety of visitors and to retain the sacred atmosphere of our ceme-

teries. ♦ Regrettably, we cannot respond to comments and requests for specific maintenance services at this time. ♦ The cemetery will commence closing its grounds to visitation at 3 pm on May 10 and continue with only burial operations until further notice.

Fifth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2020 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6

VOCATION Roman Catholics in the United States spend a good deal of time speaking of “vocation” and the manner in which each of us discerns our vocation for life. In today’s apostolic letter, however, Peter gives us the “cornerstone” of our vocation, the description of what each of us is called to first and foremost by our baptism. He describes our vocation as “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of [God’s] own, so that you may announce the praises” of Christ, who called us out of darkness into light (1 Peter 2:9). All of us, no matter what path our life’s vocation may take us down, have been chosen by God, made holy, and anointed as priests in the high priesthood of Christ through baptism. All of this, so that we may announce the praises of Christ. Vocation is given for proclamation at home, in the workplace—wherever life takes us—in service, in word, and in sacrament. RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord, in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director

about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues.

SAINT DAMIEN JOSEPH DE VEUSTER OF MOLOKA’I (1840-1889) May 10 In the mid-1990s, a heavily bearded, bespectacled Robin Williams appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, whose host was clearly taken aback. Letterman inquired as to why the wild look. Uncharacteristically subdued, the usually manic comic responded that he was producing and starring in a movie about a most extraordinarily compassionate man, Da-mien, the Leper Priest of Moloka’i. Some saints transcend religious and ethnic boundaries to touch the heart that beats in each human being: Francis of As-sisi; Mother Teresa; and, though Williams’ film was never com-pleted, his admiration speaks, as does Damien’s statue outside the capitol in Honolulu, of this newest saint’s universal appeal. Far from his native Flanders’ idyllic beauty and rich culture, Damien volunteered to bear Christ’s light into Moloka’i’s bleak leper colony, building decent homes, opening schools, establish-ing clinics, planting farms, sharing the sufferings—and the so-cial stigma—of those with whom he delighted to identify: “We lepers,” he would proudly say when finally he contracted lep-rosy. Saint Damien challenges us to identify the lepers of our own day, to examine our compassion for and our identification with them.

VOCACIÓN Los católicos en los Estados Unidos pasan mucho tiempo hablando de “vocación” y la manera en que cada uno de nosotros discierne nuestra vocación en la vida. Sin embargo, en la carta apostólica de hoy, Pedro nos da la “piedra angular” de nuestra vocación, lo primero y principal en el llamado de cada uno de nosotros a raíz de nuestro Bautismo. Él describe nuestra vocación como “estirpe elegida, sacerdocio real, nación consagrada a Dios, pueblo de su propiedad para que proclamen las obras maravillosas de aquél [Cristo] quien nos llamó de las tinieblas a su luz admirable” (1 Pedro 2:9). Todos nosotros, sin importar la senda por la cual nuestra vocación de vida nos lleve, hemos sido elegidos por Dios, hechos santos, y ungidos como sacerdotes en el alto sacerdocio de Cristo por nuestro Bautismo. Todo esto, para que podamos anunciar las maravillas de Cristo. Se nos da una vocación para que proclamemos mediante el servicio, la palabra y el sacramento dentro del hogar, en el trabajo y dondequiera que nos lleve la vida.
