We are approaching the end of my second month with Holy Apostles and I have enjoyed meeting everyone and worshiping in this unique environment. It has been a time for me to learn more about Christian Unity and what it means, really, here where the rubber hits the road; to commit to live intentionally and respect- fully into a community that was formed to bring witness to the world, that in Christ we are One Body. Discovering what that means in application, and learning how to navigate a sometimes different system and culture, has kept me busy and has been actually fun. In the past, I have often been asked many questions by parishioners about what hap- pens during a time of transition: What is different about an interim pastor than a settled pastor? Why do we have to do it? How long will it take? And many other questions. It is kind of comforting, as I learn about the special ministry that is here, to listen to these familiar questions and others that were asked at the recent presentation by the Discernment Committee. I was so happy to attend and thankful for the great job the Committee is doing - and how hard they are working. Of course there is no easy or definitive answer to any of these questions. Most of the ministry of an interim is the same as the settled pastor; including leading worship, meeting with committees, boards, staff, other clergy and individuals to pray, teach, plan, worship, provide pastoral care, and administrate the day-to-day and long-term life of this congregation. That part is the same. Additionally, as an interim, I am called to help a congregation, with the participa- tion and help of the Discernment Committee, to understand and celebrate that which brings blessing, hope, joy and energy at Holy Apostles, to keep things going and to explore new possibilities. Here at Holy Apostles that may include working and praying with Fr. René, Dea- con Gary and others, including the Liturgy Team, to explore how we function within required guidelines in a way that helps us to grow in Christian Unity as one Congregation that is Roman Catholic and Episcopal. As the members of the Discernment Committee said, it is an important time to understand this so that we can know the kind of personality and ministry style that will come and work well with this congregation now and into the future. We dont know how long that will take, nor how long, once the Discernment Committee puts all of the information together, to find the priest who fits well, and then to work through the possibility and details of a call. Some things that are coming up: Blessing of Pets on St. FrancisDay, at 4:30 PM, October 4 on the lawn in front of the church building. On October 8 the Vestry Council and Committee chairs are meeting in retreat at Westminster Canterbury looking at goals for the coming year. Caryl Felty, an experienced facilitator, will be our guide. The Christian Formation Committee continues to plan exciting events, including the upcoming Parish Retreat with Fr. Tom Ryan. The Liturgy Committee has been meeting and it is so exciting to look ahead and plan some events and worship. There is really a lot going on, and wonderful, committed people gathering to talk about history and possibilities - and then to work together to make it happen. We are blessed with a great staff – Bob the Bookkeeper, Barbara in the Nursery, Dianne Marzec is so organized and helpful! Deacon Gary is ever present to help and to sup- port. Fr. René is now finished with his CPE and is more available here, and I am so thankful to be sharing ministry with him! I have delighted in getting to know him a little and I look forward to getting to know him better - and to getting to know you, also! In Christs love and Peace, Fr. Alan

Dear Holy Apostles Friends, It is amazing to me how quickly time flies by! We are approaching the end of my second month with Holy Apostles and I have enjoyed meeting everyone and worshiping in this unique environment. It has been a time for me to learn more about Christian Unity and what it means, really, here where the rubber hits the road; to commit to live intentionally and respect-fully into a community that was formed to bring witness to the world, that in Christ we are One Body. Discovering what that means in application, and learning how to navigate a sometimes different system and culture, has kept me busy and has been actually fun. Thank you to everyone who completed the Discernment Committee Survey. Each person’s responses are completely con-

fidential. The overall survey results will be presented to the Congregation and will be used to guide the Discernment Com-

mittee in recommending a settled Episcopal co-pastor to the Vestry Council.

Our Discernment Committee meets regularly to do the work of assessing the community and identifying the desired quali-

ties/traits hoped for in a permanent Episcopal co-pastor. John Franklin is the Committee chair and members are Mike

Cherwa, Kelly Hormuth, Joan Flowers, Tony Asalone, Jackie Lucas, George Hodermarsky, and Gene Zamer. These faith-

ful members of our community are willingly giving an enormous amount of their time to see that we get the best possible

match for our new Episcopal co-pastor.

Save The Date: Presentation on Healing

On Saturday, January 14, from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, we will host The Rev. Nigel Mumford for a presentation on healing.

For the pastoral activity of the Church, on September 19th we celebrated Catechist Sunday with the cooperation of a great many people who are needed so that our community may advance to full maturity in faith and continually show forth their faith. The role of a catechist is to teach the faith by word and example. We celebrated with Tony Asalone, Joe Claunch, John Delaney, Joan Flowers, Hank Foiles, Tom Frey, Dominick Hankle, Cliff Hatt, Barbara Kimpan, Nicholas Kimpan, Lynne Larson, Lourdes Little, Diego Londono, Anne Martin, Anne Marzitello, Fr. Jim Parke, Norma Ragland, Dawn Schryver, Bonnie Startt, and Gene Zamer. Thanks for all you do for Holy Apostles.

2017 Time, Talent and Treasure

In October, you will receive your 2017 Time, Talent, and Treasure pledge forms. We will present our pledges at the in-gathering on All Saints’ Sunday, November 6. Please prayerfully consider how you can offer your time, talents, and treasure to the Church of the Holy Apostles in the upcoming year. There are many volunteer opportunities and minis-tries that need support.

We know that Military families are part of our community and suffer dearly when their loved ones are deployed. Therefore, if you have any concerns or needs that occur when this happens, please contact Nick Nichter at 757-285-2565. Holy Apostles’ will provide someone to help or just listen.

Social Ministry News

Manna Sunday on October 2nd

Sunday, October 2nd is Manna Sunday. This is the day we help restock the Manna pantry. At the current time the Man-na Pantry is particularly in need of canned meats, canned fruits, Chef Boyardee, pasta sauce, taco kits, hamburger/tuna helper, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, oatmeal, granola bars, salad dressings and mayo. Many families really need our help.

Military Families

Making a difference at The Crossings

Holy Apostles is making a difference in the lives of our neighbors. In addition to the monthly partnership with the Foodbank of South-

eastern Virginia, we have started a partnership with The Crossings at Independence, a new retirement community, to provide lay led

chapel service and bible study. Thank you to everyone who is involved in these important ministries.

We have received many donations to the Discretionary Fund in memory of Fr. Mike. Fr. Mike taught us that “an essential part of our

ministry is seeking to find and serve other members of God’s family.” He admired the good works done by this community to serve

the hungry, the homeless, and the suffering.

We are grateful to Nick Nichter who volunteers each Wednesday from 1-3 PM to assist people with their utilities bills. Please give

prayerful consideration to making periodic contributions to the Holy Apostles Discretionary Fund in memory of Fr. Mike. Your help

and support are truly appreciated.

“Choosing love over division, unity over separation. Choosing Christ above all other things.”

We are a vibrant community with a strong future!

Gracious Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is cor-rupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen.
