Ray Kurzweil prognosti-cates a future that eliminates the inevitability of death by aging. The inventor and en-trepreneur cites the expo-nential acceleration of sci-entific progress and pro-poses that the convergence of health science and tech-nology will provide the means for prolonging life indefinitely.

A sci-fi pipe dream you say? Between Kurzweil and March Madness, your money is safer with the scientist.

Today, we use statins to improve our blood lipid pro-file and growth hormone to hit baseballs really (really) far. Tomorrow, we will use nanotechnology to excise cancer at the cellular level while gene-doping will neu-tralize the body’s “regulator” on muscle production, my-ostatin.

The viability of immor-tality, or even extremely pro-longed life by contemporary standards, holds tremen-dous implications for our ever-evolving social-system.

Particularly poignant in light of the Terry Schiavo case (and the Easter holiday for that matter), the prospect of doing away with death means re-evaluating social norms and cultural beliefs—the treatment of death as desirable or undesirable, a right, or a privilege, must all be reconsidered.

Surely, popular litera-ture and Hollywood have sensationalized countless iterations of a possible fu-ture: Huxley’s Brave New World and the films Blade Runner, Gattaca, Dark City, and Minority Report come to mind.

It is no wonder that re-curring themes in these popular futurist forays deal with dystopia and escapism. In these stories the toys and

promises of the future are always great, but fleeting—and never enough justifica-tion for the direction of soci-ety’s “progress.” Each pro-tagonist must struggle to define their existence by breaking the status quo.

Some argue that the longer we perpetuate life (especially among a certain class of people), the more likely a system of norms will emerge that brings us closer to a dystopian future. An-other, more optimistic view, argues that prolonging life allows for the accumulation of unbroken “continuums” of knowledge and information, the proliferation of which will give rise to the next wave of innovations.

With the advent of a global network, the idea of a measurable information con-tinuum is already a reality. The Internet is slowly clos-ing the gap between a per-son’s perceived and online information.

Each technological inno-vation that connects to the network publishes informa-tion to the continuum. Your car’s GPS, your cell phone, TiVO, Xbox, VoIP phone, and soon an entire litany of biomedical devices will add to the growing wealth of online information at an ac-celerating pace. And some-one will google it.

It is an enormous effort to apply law’s order to the exponential growth of inno-vation. Perhaps, if Kurzweil is right, there will be enough billable hours in our futures to handle the job. Then again, the prospect of undy-ing lawyers may be enough to compel society’s careful rethinking of “progress.”
