March 8, 2019 Dear Owosso Families: I am reaching out to share important dates for the 2019-2020 Owosso Public Schools’ calendar. Due to our exciting construction projects, Owosso Public Schools will start school after Labor Day. Please take note of the following dates for your plan- ning purposes: • First Day of School: September 3, 2019 • Christmas Break: December 23, 2019 to January 3, 2020 • Spring Break: March 30 to April 3, 2020 ere are still portions of the Owosso Public Schools’ calendar that will be finalized through contract ne- gotiations with our teachers later this spring. We work collaboratively with our teachers to present a school calendar that is best for students. Additionally, we are awaiting news from the State of Michigan on legislative action and waivers to forgive weather days. Based on past experience, we would expect 9 of the 15 weather days to be forgiven by the state. If we do not have any more weather days and there are no more days forgiven beyond the 9 days, our last day of school would be June 10, 2019. Once we receive the state’s decision, we will prompt- ly notify you of the official last day of school for 2019. As my parents get old- er, I hear more and more stories about their high school adven- tures as they reminisce about the good ol’ days of youth, excitement, friends, and fun. It brings me great joy and laughter when I hear them share their stories. I’m sure we would mostly all agree that the fondest of memories do not typ- ically occur inside the bricks and mortar of class- room walls. Memories are often created outside the classroom and the conversation frequently begins with the proverbial, “Remember when . . .” stories which usually end with smiles and roaring laughter. Recently the members of our Owosso High School Trojan Marching Band (TMB) created some incred- ible memories by traveling to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. It is not a secret that at the top of Owosso’s nu- merous points of pride are the accomplishments of our performing arts programs which include drama, choir, and our bands. Our award-winning marching band has repeatedly been invited to march at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World. If you have never had the opportunity to witness this feat, it is tru- ly spectacular. Audience members line Main Street U.S.A. with numerous parents, friends, and com- munity members from Owosso, along with approx- imately 50,000 individuals from around the world. You anxiously wait in anticipation for one of the best bands representing Owosso and our state to march around the corner and let their presence be known in sight and sound. You can hear them coming be- fore you ever see them; their sound is overpowering because the Trojan Marching Band, comprised of over 170 members is unmatched. e thunderous roar of the collective Owosso fans, as well as the masses of onlookers, all have the distinct privilege of hearing the TMB perform.
