‘Twas grace that taught
my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did
that grace appear

When we’ve been there
ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days

Than when we first begun.

Translations
Nous Voyons que les Hommes
Men, plainly enough, all think it a feather in their cap if they make love.
It is foolish of us women to speak ill of love:
what is seen as praiseworthy for them is dishonourable for us
and an inexcusable fault; morality is harsh.
Nature has more sense than they do: it has given us a body
better designed than men’s for amorous practices,
yet to us they are more forbidden.
Kyrie Eleison
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Die Lotosblume
The Lotus flower fears before the sun’s splendour,
and with drooping head she dreamily awaits the night.
The moon, he is her lover. He wakes her with his light
and to him she happily unveils her devoted flower-face.
She blooms and glows and shines and stares mute in the heavens.
She exhales and weeps and trembles with love and love's pain.
Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen
A young man loves a girl, who has chosen another man,
the other loves yet another and has gotten married to her.
The girl takes, out of resentment, the first, best man
who crosses her path; the young man is badly off.
It is an old story but remains eternally new,
and for him to whom it has just happened it breaks his heart in two.
