Chairlady’s CornerDear Fellow RROC Members.

It is hard to believe just an issue or so ago I alluded to the fact we had not seen the sun in quite a while, and now this weekend is one of the hottest on record. Southern California, wonderfully unpredictable, and a great place to call home. I think it was the prediction of triple digit temperatures that contributed to the cancellation of our Jim Hall Racing School adventure on August 16th. Don’t worry, we will try and schedule this great event in one of our cooler months.

The next four months are some of our most popular events of the year. September we are going to visit the exclusive Art Astor collection of beautiful cars, slot machines, antique radios and so much more. Then October will be the always exciting and challenging Fox Hunt. Here is where you need to bring your extraordinary driving skills and your quick wit and knowledge of so many bits of useless information that will help you be victorious over all your fellow RROC members. November will be a wonderful weekend trip to Palm Springs and December will be the annual wild and wacky holiday party. Great events have been planned so please mark your calendars so you don’t miss a thing.

We have had several members comment on how much they like the electronic copy of the newsletter that they have received over the last several months. The publication and first class mailing of our monthly colored newsletter is an extremely important part of your RROC membership, but also a very large expense to our club. So this year, due to the positive response we have received from our members about their electronic version of the newsletter, we are going to offer two levels of membership for our members. Last year, and for several years, our dues have been $55 per person. This year we are going to offer an electronic newsletter membership (with no printed copy) at a reduced price of $50 per person, or a printed copy of the newsletter membership, delivered by first class mail for an annual price of $65 per person. The cost for a spouse or partner has not changed and remains at only one dollar per spouse or partner, and this gives that member all the liability insurance of a full member. This is quite a bargain. In addition to our monthly events we also have a monthly technical meets held at our renowned Technical Chairman’s shop. Here you can be hands on with many different techniques and procedures. It is an experience that you could not pay for, and we do it for you just because you are a Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiast. Please make some time and sign up for the next Tech Meet, where coffee and donuts are free.

I am extremely proud of the 2015 Officers and Directors, and I hope you are too. However, if we are not providing you with what you thought you should be receiving as a RROC So-Cal member, then I want to know. Give me a call or an email and I will try to make it better.

Happy motoring and enjoy that very hot sunshine.

The Cover Story

Bob and Janet Dryden have been members of RROC So Cal for twenty years. They are the proud long-term owners of the 1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Park Ward Close Coupled Saloon (GTL-69) featured on the cover of this issue. It was delivered to the original owner at Bradford, England, and has had several owners. Bob and Janet purchased GTL-69 in 1987, while they were living in England.

Of the 1,201 Small Horsepower 25/30s made between 1936-1938, 750 are thought to have survived. GTL-69 was the 149th in this series.

During their twenty-eight years of ownership, GTL-69 has often been shown at various concourses in Orange County, and won many awards, including 2nd Place Concours at the 1999 RROC 48th Annual Meet at Dana Point, California.

The photograph above is from Coachwork on Rolls-Royce 1906-1939, by Lawrence Dalton (Dalton Watson Limited, London (1975)), and would have been taken when GTL-69 was brand new.

Election of 2016 Officers and Members of the Board of

Directors Past Chairman Willy Hugron is heading the Nominating Committee for the 2016 slate of officers and members of the board of directors. All members are invited to attend the ballot count.

Changes in National Dues and Life Membership Requirements

RROC National notified members via email on July 22, 2015 of the following changes in club dues:

Effective October 1, 2015 the cost of a Full Member Annual Dues will increase by $10 per year, raising US Membership dues from $70 to $80. The $10 increase also applies to Canadian Full Memberships increasing from $95 to $105 and Full Overseas Memberships increasing from $120 to $130. The dues increase does not affect the other membership categories; International Digital, Spouse/Partner, or Junior.

It has been more than five years since our dues were increased. The board reviewed a number of alternatives, but the increase in dues was the most predictable method to ensure that we would have access to the income we need. Naturally, we will carefully explore all of our expenses with the interest of reducing them where we can without penalty. And, we are exploring several other sources of increasing our revenues via, increased sales of Club Stores merchandise and increased advertising sales, on line, in the Flying Lady, and in the Directory & Register....which will now be published annually! Switching from every other year to every year will enable you to keep your vehicle inventory more up to date, which I know is important to many of you.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE... The Board realized that a dues increase, no matter when it started, would always catch someone out.... your renewal was not due until December...but that will be at the increased rate for the Full Membership and if it had been due in September it would only have been at the current rate. Fear not, we will accommodate you! If, you wish to pay your next annual dues ahead of their scheduled renewal....and we get your check or credit card payment before October 1st, you can renew at the present rate! Your next dues payment would then be due in December, 2016.

As they say on late night TV...Act now and save!

LIFE MEMBERSHIP CHANGES

The board also addressed the issue of Life Memberships. Up to this point, in order to qualify for a Life Membership you had to have been a Full member for 15 consecutive years. Only Full Members were eligible for Life Membership, not Spouse/Partner Members. And, the price of a Life membership was 20 times the Annual Full Membership Dues.Effective with the last board meeting the following changes have been made:

• LifeMembershipisavailabletoanyFullmemberwith10years of total membership

• Life Membership is available, for the first time, toSpouse/Partner members who meet the 10 year membership requirement

The cost of a Life Membership....whether Full or Spouse/Partner, will be 20 times the cost of the full membership dues at the date of application. The Board also acted to encourage those members who would now be newly eligible to become Life Members to act now, by allowing all of those newly eligible to act before October 1st and have their Life membership calculated on the 20 times the existing Annual Dues. Contributions or gifts to the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club are not tax deductible as charitable contributions. The IRS considers RROC Dues to be a contribution, and therefore not deductible as a charitable contribution.

The Hunt is On!!! Oh, where or where can he be?

We know where we’ll be but Freddy (and his pal Fredericka) are still a mystery. We’ll be at Michillinda Park, which is located at 3800 Michillinda Drive in Pasadena at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 11th to begin one of the pre-eminent events of the year – the 2016 Southern California Region Fox Hunt. The day begins with coffee, doughnuts, and instructions for the Hunt and the hunters will set forth on their quest at 10:00 a.m. Freddy has had much time to figure out his route and I’m sure he has some shenanigans planned for us along the way so we’ll need to be sharp!

Can you believe that the Fox Hunt is almost here? Do you have your team set and ready to go? We’ll need to know who is attending by October 6th, so get cracking! The cost is $35 per person, which includes a delicious lunch at a surprise location. There is a short RSVP period for this event so be sure to get your reservations in early. You may mail your check to Terri Mercurio at 22512 Garzota Dr., Santa Clarita, CA 91350.

Note the Wanted poster on the facing page. These are the varmints that we will be hunting.

Happy Hunting!

What is a Fox Hunt?By Dori Olsen

In this issue of the newsletter, you will notice the full size picture of two foxes, elegantly garbed, sitting on the bumper of a Rolls-Royce. Allow me to introduce to you Freddy and Fredericka, the mascots of the RROC So Cal annual Fox Hunt and also the quest of the Hunters. As you can see, the So Cal Fox Hunt is not a blood sport and no shotguns or hounds are required. So what are we doing? In OUR Fox Hunt, the hosts of the Hunt (the Hunt Masters) determine a route that all Hunters will follow. Do you receive a map? Of course not! What kind of challenge would that be? The route is determined by the answers to questions that you are given at the beginning of the hunt, with the answers being developed along the route. The questions relate to places and things that you will see along the route and there may be scheduled stops at various landmarks where you may obtain game pieces, puzzle pieces or even Freddy. Each Hunt is different and is developed by the hosts.

The day typically begins with the Hunt Breakfast, comprised of pastries, fruit, juice and coffee. The Hunters will gain sustenance for the Hunt, converse with fellow Hunters and receive the Hunt packet with directions and the questions for the Hunt. Hunt attire is not required but it is so much more fun when the participants dress for the part! A simple hat with a feather, a red or plaid vest, some black leather boots, jodhpurs if you want to go all out; all are some ideas for Hunt attire. A fox’s tail has been noted sticking out of the boot of a PMC on previous Fox Hunts so the idea is to just have fun.

Now, because someone has to drive and it’s really much safer to have at least one other person in your PMC with you to watch both sides of the road for the answers to the questions, you might want to create a Hunt Team. The team is limited only by your imagination. You may want to intentionally invite “back seat drivers” because in this instance, they are actually helpful!

If everything goes swimmingly with your team, you all will arrive at the surprise destination, where a delightful lunch awaits you. But alas, if you take a side route and are totally befuddled, all is not lost. In your packet is a panic envelope which you may open to find out the location of the lunch. There is a penalty however; you will not be able to win the Hunt for that year.

As we gather for our luncheon, the Hunt Master will give the answers to the various questions and everyone will score their sheet. But what if there is a tie? The Hunt Master has prepared technical

and/or tricky and/or historical questions about Rolls-Royce and Bentley automobiles, history, manufacturing and anything else that they can think of to differentiate between the Hunters’ scores.

At the conclusion of lunch, the Hunt Master will announce the winners of the Hunt and will present the perpetual Fox Hunt Trophy. And did I mention that the winners are guaranteed the honor and pleasure of hosting the next year’s Hunt? So come on out and join us for this totally crazy and fun event! You all will have a great time!

center shaft. The shiny residue on the outside of the turbo is from penetrating oil used to loosen the mounting nuts during removal. At this point I went ahead and ordered up a new factory turbocharger from the UK. I was tempted to have the unit rebuilt by a local rebuilder. Unfortunately, after reading online reviews for the shops, I was hesitant to try one of them on my customer’s turbocharger. Especially since the removal and installation of the turbo takes about five hours and I would have to warranty any failures.

Some of you readers probably wonder what a turbocharger does and how it works. The turbo pressurizes the intake manifold to increase horsepower. It is essentially a double fan unit separated into two chambers. The picture shows the exhaust side. Exhaust gases come in on the right side and spiral inwards in a counter-clockwise direction pushing the fan in the center and exit the hole in the center. This fan is connected to a shaft that is lubricated with pressurized engine oil. The other side of the turbo is a mirror image of the exhaust side with a separate chamber that pulls intake air from the air cleaner, compresses the air and forces it into the intake manifold.

Thank you for the questions and keep them coming. Please send your questions to Ronny at [email protected].

Why Does My ArnageSmoke So Much?

by Ronny Shaver, Technical Chairman

This month one of my best customers brought in his 2000 Bentley Arnage Red Label with two complaints: a fuel leak under the rear of the car and an oil leak under the front of the car. The fuel leak ended up being a fuel ‘non-return valve’ or check valve under the fuel tank. This leak was pretty straight forward so I ordered the necessary part, replaced the faulty one and was done with that complaint. The second complaint was a different story. One thing the customer didn’t mention was that whenever the car was started after sitting awhile, a large amount of blue smoke came from the tail pipe. Enough smoke to fill a garage. Needless to say, this was not normal. This type of smoke after sitting is usually caused by leaking valve seals. Since the valve seals had been replaced when the head gaskets were replaced a couple of years ago, this made valve seals an unlikely cause.

When the car was raised and run for a period of time, I noticed an engine oil leak at the front of the engine. I inspected the usual areas for leaks but found none. What I found was what appeared to be an exhaust leak, but it was leaking oil! The area it was coming from was under the turbocharger but the actual point the oil was coming from was hard to see. As with many oil leaks, the spot it was dripping from was not where the leak was. After lowering the car, I inspected the oil lines to and from the turbocharger for possible leaks. The turbocharger is fed with pressurized engine oil and has a return line to the crankcase. Both of these lines were dry as were the joints where they attached. Since I saw no other areas the oil could be coming from, I deduced the oil leak was internal and dripping from the joints between the turbo and exhaust systems.

After contacting the dealership and pricing a new turbo (not a cheap date for sure) I was determined to make sure the problem was the turbo. When I got the turbocharger I was sure the problem was found. See the photo below:

Notice the large round pipe section in the center. This is the outlet for the exhaust side of the turbo, see the shiny black residue? This is fresh oil leakage. You can also see the residue on the inlet for the exhaust side of the turbo. Bingo, problem diagnosed. The next photo shows the exhaust side of the turbo, which shows the source of the leak. Notice the residue in the lower right of the round section. This is engine oil leaking from the seal for the

2016 Southern California Region Dues are Changing

At the board meeting on August 1st, chairlady Karen Perrault presented an analysis of the 2015 Southern California Region budget through July, 2015. While the region is in good financial condition, there is a current trend of declining revenues, which may become a problem in the future if it is not addressed now. The club revenue comes primarily from membership dues, events and advertising in the newsletter. Membership has been declining over the past several years, participation in the club events has been down for the past several years and we lost a full page of advertising in the newsletter.

The Board explored at length various options to halt the trend of declining revenue. Possibilities discussed were raising membership dues, converting the newsletter to an all-electronic format, reducing the number of issues of the newsletter, increasing the cost of the monthly events and/or cutting back on member recognition such as the quality of trophies at the Concours d’Elegance and the year-end awards. The Board felt that the newsletter provides great value to the membership. It is published monthly, is a vital communication organ for club activities, contains technical information in each issue, is in full color, celebrates member accomplishments with their PMC and contains many photos so that all members may share in the events. The Board also concluded that member recognition is an important function of the club and should be considered a priority item for budgetary purposes.

After lengthy discussion, the Board agreed unanimously that we will not raise dues for all members. The region dues will be reduced to $50.00 per member and each member will receive an electronic copy of the newsletter on a monthly basis. For those members wishing to receive a printed copy of the newsletter, the dues for 2016 will be $65.00 and they will continue to receive the newsletter on a monthly basis around the first of each month. The spouse/partner dues remain the same at $1.00 and are recommended due to the additional insurance coverage at Club events.

Region dues are paid at the same time as the National dues. If you wish to pay your National dues prior to October 1st as indicated in the National dues article on page 5, the Region dues would be due at the same, in the new amount, if you wish to receive a printed copy of the newsletter or the reduced amount if you are content with an electronic copy of the newsletter. The dues will be effective for the period January, 2016 through December 2016.
