The Art of Collage
What is a collage?
Collage is a twentieth century form of art. From the French term for 'to glue’, it is art created from a variety of flat materials (more or less) and objects that are glued to another surface. The objects are often painted or drawn upon to bring the work together.
Georges Braque. Fruit Dish and Glass, 1912
George Braque created the first collage in 1909.
George Braque. The Violin, 1914
He began by using everyday materials such as newspapers and magazines.
Georges Braque. Still Life on a Table: “Gillette”, 1914
Pablo Picasso. Guitar, Sheet Music, Glass,1912
Later, other artists like Pablo Picasso started making
collages.
One of Picasso’s favorite materials to use was sheet music.
Juan Gris. Glasses, Newspaper and a Bottle of Wine, 1913
Gino Severini. Playing Cards and Flask, c. 1912
Some artists liked the way these collages
looked so much that
they tried to copy the look in painting.
Sometimes it became
difficult to tell the difference between real collage and simulated collage.
