Celebrating over a Century of Faith and Education

St. Barbara Parish is a Roman Catholic community celebrating a century of faith in the Bridgeport area. Our faith community welcomes all people, helping them grow spiritually through liturgy, prayer, and education, and socially through activities for all ages. Our school takes great pride in fostering these values in our children. We give witness to our faith by sharing with each other our God-given gifts and talents. We nourish and sustain our faith as a family by celebrating the sacraments and the presence of the risen Lord among us in the Eucharist.

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord and we see, in the first reading, disciples who are staring at the sky where just seconds ago Jesus was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight. It must be something amazing – something that made them speechless – something that was fascinating. It took two angels to make them come back to reality. It reminds me of a movie which is a very pretty movie but, at the end, the movie is over and we have to come back to reality. The disciples had experi-enced beautiful times in their lives. For three years, they were with Jesus. They saw him changing water into wine, they saw him curing sick people, feeding the hungry, raising the dead and, now, it is like with the movie. They see written, “The End”. But for the disciples of Jesus, the movie will never end. In the gospel Jesus said, “Go therefore and make dis-ciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” And this is our homework that Jesus gave us. Be His witnesses to the end of the world. We should do everything possible to bring people to Jesus. Every one of us do this in a different way, but we should have one target — build the church. We do this by prayer, charity work, example, sufferings and everyday works. It is good to look up to heaven and have a good time with Jesus only, but we have to remember that it is time to serve our brothers and sisters. If reminds me of one story about a monk who lived in the monastery. His duty was to distribute food for the poor once a day. But, all his life, he was praying and begging Jesus that he might see him – have this divine vision of Jesus. And one day when he was praying, the dream came true. Jesus Himself ap-peared to the poor monk but, unfortunately, it was the time when poor people came for their daily food. The monk said, “Please, not now. I have a vision of Jesus!” But Jesus said to him, “you have two choic-es – you can go and do your duties, feeding the poor and I will wait for you. Or, you can stay here but the vision will be over.”

The same is true in our life. We have to pray, we have to meditate, but also remember that we have to serve.

As you may have read in The Chicago Catholic, I will be on sabbatical from June 1st to September 1st. I will think about you while I am gone and I look forward to being back here soon.

SCHOOL MAY CROWNING

Last week, our First Communicants and our Eighth grade class helped celebrate May Crowning. Jessica Groark and Matthew Dyjak were chosen to crown the Blessed Virgin Mary. Ava Walczak had the honor of being the crown bearer. Catholics all over the world celebrate this annual tradition during the month of May to honor Mary, the Mother of God, and Queen of Heaven and Earth.
