TALLer Tales

There’s

Another

General in the

House: A few weeks ago, my parents started chatting about taking a quick trip to Chicago.

They still have the “travel bug” in them and since they haven’t been able to travel to Arizona during the winter months for many years, we try to do what we can to come up with quick trips around here. Okay, here isn’t Arizona but we try. My parents are now happy even with a trip to the Detroit or Toledo Zoo, Great Lakes Crossing or Frankenmuth (I guess we’re not too adventurous). Half the time, I’m sure the “travel bug” hits them just so they can get out of the house and break the monotony of what seems like endless doctor’s visits during the week for both of them! My sister Cindy and niece McKenzie volunteered to take Mom and Dad to Chicago during Holy Week. Almont Schools had that week off so a trip got planned for Monday through Thursday. Everyone was excited to go. As you can imagine, lots of planning took place to make it as comfortable as possible for everyone. They decided to take the train which my parents have done from time to time (and they’ll admit they’ve had mixed results going by train). This time it was a bit more challenging because, as my parents learned, traveling by train isn’t so senior or handicap friendly. It may be easy if you’re getting on at the first stop and getting off at the last stop because you’d have more time but climbing up to the train and getting situated proved to be a challenge with the few minutes the train was stopped in Troy to pick up people up. Once they got going, things were fine. They had a great trip. They took their first Uber ride (which itself proved to be fascinating because the Uber driver showed up at the wrong hotel and then took a scenic tour or got lost going to the Museums) and they even tested my technology skills to see if I could figure out what restaurant they were dining at one night based on my ability to log into their medical alert devices. Yes, “Big Brother” knows all!

About a week after their trip, my mom made a veiled reference to the fact she was with “The General” most of the week. I was confused. I’m usually referred to as “The General.” But I knew she wasn’t talking about me because I wasn’t with her most of that week. “Who was she talking about,” I asked myself. I then wondered if she was talking about Jackie since she was with her part of Easter week. So, still not being able to figure out who my competition was, I finally asked: “So who’s the General you’re talking about? Did you mean Jackie because she’s next in line?” My mom laughed and was quick to reply, “No way. It’s Cindy. With Jackie and Sandy I can get away with things but with you and Cindy, forget it!” Festival Countdown: By the time the last person leaves the building on Sunday, the first set of trucks will pull in as the 49th Annual SJA Spring Festival unfolds before our eyes. Please keep the festival in your prayers! May everyone be safe! May we have lots of people! May we have beautiful and warm weather (remember to keep those prayers going)! May the 49th Annual SJA Spring Festival be a GREAT success! Please remember there are only two main entrances: one near the Family and Youth Center on St. Joan Street and another near the Gym on Overlake Street. And, most importantly remember: 1) no one under the age of 18 will be allowed to enter the property after 6:00 p.m. unless they are accompanied by a parent who will be required to show a valid driver’s license or state issued identification card;

2) no backpacks will be allowed anytime throughout the weekend (baby and/or diaper bags will be allowed but your normal backpacks will not); 3) there will

be a $1 admissions charge per person per day for anyone over the age of 5. For the latest festival news visit www.sjascs.org/festival! Festival Volunteers Still Needed: We still need plenty of volunteers to work the various areas of the festival. While all areas need help, the greatest number of openings still remains in the Food Tent, Admission and Bingo. If you are interested in helping in any area, please

visit our festival volunteer homepage at http://www.sjascs.org/festivalvolunteering. Even if you only have an hour to spare during festival weekend, we could certainly use your help! Helping Puerto Rico in Memory of

Sr. Carol: I am happy to report that we’ve collected just over $19,000 so far to help those two families in Puerto Rico rebuild their homes and lives. I am grateful for your extraordinary generosity. Happy Mother’s Day: “Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen (“Blessing of Mothers on Mother’s Day,” Book of Blessings)!” As we celebrate this special day dedicated to mothers, we take a moment to thank and pray for our own mother who gave us life and showed us love. We pray for mothers who lost a child through death that they may continually turn to their faith to find hope and assurance their child is in the loving arms of the eternal Father. We also pray for women, who for a variety of reasons and circumstances, are not granted the grace to be a mother but who show forth their mothering characteristics in the ways they care for the children they come in contact with. Elsewhere in the bulletin, you’ll find the now famous Beatitudes of a Mother by Fr. Rich. Consider sharing and/or reading Fr. Rich’s great work at your Mother’s Day gathering! A link to download a PDF copy of Beatitudes of a Mother can also be found on the home page of our parish website. Enjoy the week. Know of my prayers. Happy Mother’s Day! Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown. and he replied: Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than the known way.”

Calendar of Events / Words on the Word

WORDS ON THE WORD MAY 06, 2018 - ROYAL WONDER

Headlines were made around the world a few weeks ago when the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to her third child. There were the obligatory pictures of mother, father and baby on the steps of the hospital a few hours after the birth.

Then people around the world waited anxiously for the baby to be named (which had not yet happened at the time of this writ-ing).

All the excitement – from the perspective of a royal family watcher – was a brief distraction from this week’s planned wed-ding of the new baby’s uncle. As always, these matters are extreme spectacles. And while the birth of a baby – any baby – is cause for celebration and thanks-giving, it’s also helpful to keep the royal accolades in perspec-tive. Yes, this child is in the succession to be an heir to the throne of England. And the baby’s siblings, father and uncle are all part of a royal tradition dating back hundreds of years. But that bit of trivia – fascinating as it is – pales in comparison to the importance of Christ, who is the true king of the world. “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe,” St. Paul writes in today’s second reading to the Ephesians. “In accord with the exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens, far above every principality, au-thority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come.” So, it’s great to celebrate the royal family, but we should truly live for the King of Glory.

Christian Service

Save Your cans and bottles The 8th grade class at St. Joan of Arc is having a can/bottle drive to help defray the cost of their Washington D.C. trip. Any parishioner wishing to donate cans or bottles can drop them off at the Parish Center throughout the year or call and we will pick them up. Any questions please call Maureen Stephanoff (586) 770-1786

Can Tabs Keep saving those tabs. The proceeds now go to support poor adults and children who have transplant surgery and cannot afford the cost of medication needed afterwards. Thanks for all you have done in the past. Just keep them coming. God bless you. Bring the tabs to the parish center to Sr. Rose.

Light of the Spirit Prayer Group Our next prayer meeting is May 15th and will be held back at St. Joan of Arc in Room 3 of the Family and Youth Center. Rosary is prayed at 6:30 pm and praise and worship will be at 7:00 pm. We then listen to God's word for us and share how we can walk closer with Jesus through the upcoming Lenten season. All parishioners are welcome to join us. Giving God praise and worship brings us to the deep presence of God and enables us to hear his voice and his will for us.

Right to Life Mother’s Day

Flower Sale We need your help with the Right to Life Mother’s Day Flower Sale at SJA. Can you help tie ribbons and prepare the flowers to be sold on

We need help selling flowers after each of the weekend Masses on Mother’s Day weekend May 12th 4 pm & 6 pm and May 13th 8 am, 10 am & 12 pm. If you are interested in helping please call: Pam Haisenleder (586) 291-7045 or Sherry Savin (313) 886-7867.

Pennies for life 2017 was a very good year! We almost surpassed an overall of $8,200 thanks to all of our generous parishioners! This program entered its 11th year this past June. A few wheat pennies (nothing valuable) turn up every week. I am holding onto them in the hope that they can once again be sold for 3 cents apiece. All proceeds are distributed monthly to Pregnancy Aid, a much needed ministry in our area. Please continue to drop your pennies into the marked jug on the Usher's table at the back of the church when you come to Sunday Mass. If you have a large quantity please call me at 313.882.6978 for pickup. A no-cost way to help is to pray for the success of this program. Pennies for Life is sponsored by the St. Joan of Arc Knights of Columbus Council, which began sending $75 per month (recently increased to $100) to Pregnancy Aid. These donations are in addition to the amount reported above. Thank you all. Jim Victor

Extraordinary Ministers of the

Eucharist Training All EMEs are required to attend ONE of the training sessions listed below if you plan to continue in the ministry. Also, we need your help! If you ever thought of becoming an EME, we encour-age you to come to one the meetings to explore whether the Lord is calling you to this type of work in the vineyard – distributing His precious Body and Blood to those who approach His altar. The EME ministry is a very important and spirit-filled way of serving God and our faith community. This training session will give you much more of the spiritual, theological and practical in-sights into this sacred ministry.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration. Training sessions will be held in the church immediately after Evening Prayer (which takes place in the Emmaus Hall at 7pm) as follows:

Jean’s Jottings

It was wonderful meeting those families that were onsite to register over the past weekend! Thank you to all the staff, catechists and Msgr. Mike for your help and support for our first ever Registration Fair! It is so important to have early registrations so that we can be fully prepared to welcome all families and children in the fall with the appropriate number of catechists and aides. While the Registra-tion Fair discount has expired please note the following discounts still apply:

For those families that register from:

May 7 - 31 use the discount code: MAY for a $35 reduction in your tuition. June 1- 30 use the discount code: JUNE for a $25 reduction in your tuition. July 1- 31 use the discount code: JULY for a $15 reduction in your tuition.

Those registering after July 31 will pay full tuition costs. A note of abundant gratitude to Suzanne Cornelius: This is not the first time that Suzanne has mentored me and I pray that she will always be a strong and steady voice for me to hear when I need guidance and inspiration. This past Monday was Mrs. C’s last Reli-gious Education class session which was a celebration of Mass and of all that Suzanne has given to the families. What a great and joy-ous part of life she is entering, but I am sure it is wrapped in some sadness and hesitation. We ask our loving and gracious Father to walk with Suzanne as she transitions into the final stages and weeks as DRE into the world of retirement. A “minister in the church” is not something you do, it is something that you are; an invitation and

gift given by God that Suzanne has used to its fullest and I know we all pray she will continue to minister to His people. Suzanne, I want to thank you for the last 17 odd years that you of-fered your faith, your spirit, your tried and true experiences with me and especially for these last four months that I have had the gift of observation on a day to day basis. I do not see this as an ending to my learning process but rather a new beginning in ministry based on all that I have taken from these months and years together. I am con-fident that being His servant, you will continue to minister to His people in some fashion during your retirement years and I look for-ward to opportunities we may be given to work together in the fu-ture. Blessings and peace be with you, Suzanne. Peace, Jean

Jesus said,

“Let the little children come to me,

And do not hinder them, for the

Kingdom of heaven

Belongs to such as these.”

Beatitudes of a Mother By Fr. Rich Bartoszek

Dedicated to my Mom: Sally Cabot

Mother’s Day 1992

Blessed is she who carried us for nine months and brought us into this world for she shall be called

MOM.

Blessed be MOM who taught us to walk, to say our first words and to rock our fears away.

Blessed be MOM who washed our clothes, ironed our shirts, darned our socks, always found our mittens

at each end of the house, and told us, “Put something on your head or you’ll catch a cold.”

Blessed be MOM who nursed us through toothaches and earaches, mumps and measles, chicken pox and

small pox, sore throats, colds and even the times we faked it and she knew it.

Blessed be MOM for the cookies she baked, the cakes she made the cupcakes for birthdays in school, the

many meals we ate in a hurry without saying thanks or how good it was.

Blessed be MOM for the times she helped us ride our first bike without training wheels, the scraped

knees she made better, the black eyes she made go away and sore fingers she endlessly kissed and

wrapped in Band-Aids.

Blessed be MOM for the times she walked beside us or watched from a distance like the first day of

school when we didn’t want to go and she didn’t want to leave us. Going to boarding school. The school

plays she made costumes for, the graduations from eighth grade, high school and college she watched us

go through.

Blessed be MOM for the birthday parties, Halloween costumes, graduation parties, the little gifts and

treats she bought while sacrificing her own desires.

Blessed be MOM for the rides to school, the help with homework which came to mind just before bed-

time, the help with the project that was due tomorrow and for the encouragement to always study hard.

Blessed be MOM for the picnics in summer, summer vacations, lemonade on hot summer days, hot choc-

olate in winter, for valentines and Easter baskets, for Santa Claus and teddy bears. For all the holidays

she made so special by all the special things she did.

Blessed be MOM for the nice things she always said about our school pictures despite crooked ties, stu-

pid smiles, uncombed hair and the outfit she didn’t want us to wear.

Blesses be MOM for the times she said, “Bring me the change,” and we forgot.

Blessed be MOM for the times we forgot to call when we got there and she sat home getting a little bit

grayer.

Blessed be MOM for the bedtime stories, the prayers she taught us and the times she said with a stern

voice, “Wait ‘til you get home!”

12 | St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church

Blessed be MOM for the times she sat in the bleachers knowing in her heart her kids were the most valu-

able players the team had ... even if they sat on the bench.

Blessed be MOM for the free advice she always gave; the psychology she used to get us to do what she

wanted us to, the comfort she gave when things didn’t work out and the pride she had when we succeed-

ed.

Blessed be MOM who never grows old in the eyes of her children but who watches her children go

through the passages of life like moving out on their own, weddings, ordinations, entering religious life,

relocating because of job transfers.

Blessed be MOM for the blessings she’s given and the understanding she has always shown when our

lives didn’t take the right direction.

Blessed be MOM for the tears she shed over and over again which always proved she would do anything

for her children.

Blessed be MOM for the many prayers she offered for us, the times she asked God to take care of us and

bring us home in one piece.

Blessed be MOM as she becomes a “Grandma” now and has held back from saying, “I told you so,”

“What goes around, comes around,” “Remember when you were small,” “May your children be just like

you, so you know what you put me through.”

Blessed be the MOM who loves unconditionally, who accept their children whether their marriage fails,

whether her kids are straight or gay, whether they got in trouble with the law or whether they became

pope or president.

Blessed be those MOMS who have lost a child at any stage of life. She has given back to God part of her

heart, which means part of her is already in heaven.

Blessed be the MOMS who have struggled in life, as single parents, through poverty and depressions,

through addictions or illness, may they know peace and stability.

Blessed be MOM as she has begun to slow up with arthritis in her hard worked joints, with vision that

might not be as strong as it once was, but is still good enough to play bingo!

Blessed be the MOMS TO BE ONE DAY, may they learn from their own teachers.

Blessed be those women who wanted to be MOMS, but never were. May they recognize the ways in

which God has compensated their lives, in other ways, to mother and love.

Blessed be MOM as she and God are together in heaven, as one day we’ll all be together again, but for

now we’ll celebrate Mother’s Day here and she’ll celebrate it with Jesus.

Blessed be all MOMS as we gather this day to thank God for the gift she is, whether on this side of life

or the other. As we recall her many blessings, it’s obvious, “Motherhood is not for Wimps.” Motherhood

is for those who love!

So wherever you are MOM, right beside us, miles away or in heaven, blessed may you always be for the

love you have given and the many ways you have blessed our lives.

Religious Education

Last week, we closed our parish Monday night Re-ligious Education pro-gram with Mass. Our program depends on so many people who care about our parish children and want them to know Jesus. THANK YOU to

all the parents who brought their children faithfully each week. THANK YOU to our many volunteer catechists, room aides, hall monitors, and Office helpers. We could do nothing without all of you. THANK YOU to our dedicated, faith-filled Section Heads: Trisha Morath (Primary), Judy Rempel (Junior High), Mary Cal (who runs our Ex-ceptional Needs Program on Saturdays), and our irreplaceable secretary Rachel Gerard. THANK YOU to the Parish Staff who sup-ports us, and our parish priests who visit and share their faith. A giant THANK YOU to our Pastor Msgr. Mike who is involved with all parts of the programs. God bless you all and MANY, MANY THANKS. Next comes VBS the week of June 18-don’t delay signing up online. The weekend of April 28-29 was First Com-munion weekend as you recall. Msgr. Buga-rin had his traditional “grocery homily.” He had a bag filled with “junk food”-delicious but unhealthy-things like Pop-Tarts(did you know they were first marketed in 1964?), Twinkies (expiration date-2025?), Crispy Crème chocolate frosted, custard filled do-nuts-yum), Kettle Corn flavored Oreos, Dove chocolates, Cap’n Crunch cereal, M&M’s, etc. -a veritable child’s dream of food. Another bag was filled with nutritious snacks (although Kale crisps or Ezekiel 49 cereal would not be my choice). The lesson was about choices—good and bad-choices that can lead to health or illness, both physi-cal and spiritual. As followers of Jesus we need to make sure our choices are the best which will show the world that not only are we disciples of Jesus, but we share Jesus with the world in how we act. . As the chil-dren celebrated their First Communion, our prayer is that they always stay one with Je-sus. When Fr. John spoke to the children, he also spoke about foods they like-ice cream, and pizza-and foods that aren’t as popular-spinach and sardines. Sardines, for exam-ple, are full of Omega 3 fatty acids that are very good for our health. Fr. John said God

wants us to grow physically and spiritually. We need to not only seek out the healthy food, but we need soul food as well. In the gospel reading, Jesus talked about being the vine and we are the branches. Fr. John told them that a vine can grow to be 50 foot long with many, many branches-each branch can produce 40 bundles of grapes and each bun-dle can have 75 grapes. The Eucharist is the best food of all for our souls and to keep our “branches healthy and producing as they should. In Eucharist, we come to live in Je-sus and more importantly, he lives in us. As we walk in the world, we will reflect Jesus to the world which needs God’s love so much. This weekend is Mother’s Day. I found a description of a mother’s love by Erma Bombeck. Here is selection from it: “Someday when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a mother, I will tell them: I loved you enough to ask about where you were going, with whom, and what time you would get home. I loved you enough to insist that you buy your own bike, even though we could afford to buy it for you. I loved you enough to stand over you for 2 hours when you cleaned your room, a job that would have taken me 15 minutes. I loved you enough to let you see disappointment, anger, and tears in my eyes. I loved you enough to admit when I was wrong and ask for your forgiveness. I loved you enough to say NO when you hated me for it. That was the hardest part of all.”

Happy Mother’s Day a Prayer

For All Mothers Thank you, Lord, that you fill a mother’s

heart with love,

That you have instilled in her very being the

need to protect her children if at all possi-

ble,

Thank you for giving her the gift of nurtur-

ing her children, of teaching them, of com-

forting them,

for feeding them and making a safe place for

them. For guiding them to be all that God has

created them to be.

Fill every mother with love, wisdom and

endurance, with strength and patience and joy.

Give them ability to forgive again and

again.

Enable her to rely on You and call upon

You, because You will give her all she

needs.

In Your precious and all powerful name,

Amen Have a Blessed week, Mrs. C the DRE

The Mystery of God

THE MYSTERY

OF GOD Who God Is and Why He Matters

Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris vigorously attack belief in God as irrational or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great. How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God?

In The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, Bishop Robert Barron reaches into our rich intellectual tradition to teach us how to respond. Using the insights of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Pope Benedict XVI, he uncovers a clear yet sophisticated understanding of what we mean by “God.” www.WordOnFire.org • MysteryOfGod.com
